EVIL DEAD....The Musical!

So this has been around for a while, but I thought I would post about it in case there is anyone who hasn't seen or heard of this yet. It is a live, musical production of Sam Raimi's film, THE EVIL DEAD! This is a play I would actually go see! A play based on one of my favorite movies of all time!! Good stuff. Unfortunately, it is a Canadian production, and was only playing up in Canada. According to the official website, they just wrapped up their 400 show run. The show is now being put on in Seoul, South Korea, with plans for more shows in Germany. So why no Evil Dead the musical here in the States? Who knows...maybe we will get to see it some day.

For now, click HERE to go to the official website, where you can get all the info and see a "trailer" for the play.

Also...click HERE to go to the official You Tube channel for Evil Dead the Musical for more clips!

Enjoy!

Movie Review: DRAG ME TO HELL

A few posts back I mentioned this film and how I was a little nervous about it, due to it being a PG-13 rated horror film. I stated that there were no good Pg-13 horror films and that I had pretty much given up on them. Well, I just got back from the theater seeing Sam Raimi's DRAG ME TO HELL, and I am now a changed man. There can be good PG-13 horror films...they just have to be made by the right people. In fact, there can be great PG-13 horror films as I witnessed tonight.

Sam Raimi did it. He made a truly scary, suspenseful, downright good horror film. This was his first horror film since the remarkable Evil Dead Trilogy. There were a lot of Evil Dead type things in this film.....mainly the sounds (in fact, the voice of one of the possessed in this film sounded just like the possessed voices from Evil Dead 2). While not as gory as the Evil Dead films, there was still a good amount of gore and just general grossness...more so than I expected from a non Rated R film. Almost everything about this film was perfect...there was even some genuinely true "jump" scares that I can usually see coming, but didn't in this film. Also...the perfect ending. Just when you think the movie is over, Raimi has one more trick up his sleeve. I don't ever remember having the urge to clap at the end of a movie...but this one I did. I was excited. I was thankful that Raimi's movie didn't just not disappoint, but actually went far beyond my expectations.

Drag yourself to the theaters and go see DRAG ME TO HELL as soon as you can. You will not be disappointed!

New Zombie Film: COLIN

As many of you know, my favorite horror films are those from the Zombie sub-genre. I LOVE ZOMBIE FILMS! If it has "of the living dead" in the title, sign me up! I always love finding new zombie films that I haven't seen yet, which is why I was excited to run across COLIN. I can't really tell much plot from the trailer here, but it looks like this could be a pretty good film

Check out the trailer for yourself HERE . Let me know what you think.....

Nothing real exciting coming out this week in my opinion, although I do have to mention one film on this list. MEGA SHARK VS. GIANT OCTOPUS! Let me start off by saying I know these films are always bad...but sometimes, they can be so bad they are good. For some reason, I really like these types of movies. I found BOA vs. PYTHON on the SciFi network and I just couldn't turn the channel! MEGA SHARK stars Lorenzo Lamas and Deborah Gibson (Debbie Gibson to all you 80's music lovers!) and from the looks of the trailer, it is going to be a crazy movie! Did I just see a shark take out the Golden Gate Bridge? Check out the trailer HERE!

**Thanks to my friend Scott Baker for pointing out MEGA SHARK VS. GIANT OCTOPUS. Like me, he enjoys these crazy creature features too! Scott is a great SciFi writer and has published 3 books so far...check out Scott's website here and also check out his blog!

Check Out The Trailer And A Couple Of Clips From Quentin Tarantino's New Film, "INGLORIOUS BASTERDS"!

While not really a horror film, I have a feeling that INGLORIOUS BASTERDS will definitely warrant a mentioning on this site. As many of you know, Tarantino is a huge fan of horror films, esp. those old 60's and 70's drive-in exploitation types. A lot of his films have some definite horror influence in them. From the trailer and the clips I have seen, this film will not be any different. I think we are in for a bloody good time! Also, INGLORIOUS BASTERDS co-stars horror director Eli Roth (of Cabin Fever and Hostel fame), so there is another horror connection.

Don't think so!). So...want to know what my top 25 favorite horror films of all time are? Click HERE to go to my Amazon.com listmania page to find out!

It is full of horror related news, trailers, and shorts, but the best thing is you can watch FULL LENGTH horror films totally free!! Right now they have some awesome movies to watch, some of which are not available in the U.S. on DVD yet! The best of these, in my opinion, is NIGHT OF THE CREEPS! Horror fans have wanted this film on DVD for a long time, and last I heard it is finally planned for release on DVD in October of this year. But, until then, you can watch it free of charge on FEARNET.com!! If you have not seen this movie, do yourself a favor and watch it asap! It is one of my all time favorite horror films!

Sam Raimi Returns To His Horror Roots....Finally!

I know this is old news, but I haven't mentioned it yet, and with the movie opening next week, I thought I better mention it. DRAG ME TO HELL is the name of the new horror movie from legendary filmmaker, Sam Raimi. The film opens nationwide on May 29. Mr. Raimi is best known to us horror fans as the director of one of the greatest sets of horror films ever made, THE EVIL DEAD TRILOGY (Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn, and Army of Darkness), but lately he has ditched horror to work on more mainstream "regular" films and has been just as successful with those as he was with his horror films. His last 3 films were the very popular SpiderMan films and it's two sequels (with part 4 announced for a 2011 release). Before those, he did a mystery/thriller movie called THE GIFT, a baseball movie (FOR LOVE OF THE GAME) and even a western (THE QUICK AND THE DEAD)! While all his movies are great, us horror fans have been begging Mr. Raimi to get back to what we think he is best at, and that is making horror films!

Finally our wishes are granted, and Mr. Raimi brings us a true horror film with his latest, DRAG ME TO HELL. My only concern with this is that it is rated PG-13. I have always said there is no point in making a horror movie that is not rated R. The PG-13 really limits you on what you can do and show on screen, and I am really surprised that he agreed to make a PG-13 horror film. I know it immediately widens your audience, therefore basically guaranteeing it a bigger box office return, but still....stick to your guns and demand nothing less than an R rating next time Sam!! I vowed to never waste money on a PG-13 horror movie again after being ripped off earlier this year by THE UNBORN. But...this is Sam Raimi. I will give PG-13 horror one more shot. If anyone can pull it off, I think Sam Raimi can.

Click here to go to the Shocktillyoudrop.com page where you can watch trailers and clips from DRAG ME TO HELL!

Also....IMDB lists an EVIL DEAD remake as "announced" on Mr. Raimi's bio page and it also lists EVIL DEAD 4 as "in development"!! Good news for all us Evil Dead Heads!!!

A huge quantity of stuff coming out this week, but not much quality if you ask me. Out of all these, the only one I would really recommend is MY BLOODY VALENTINE (2009 remake). I know a lot of people are against remakes, but I think they did a good job with this one. Plus, it was just a lot of fun to watch in 3D at the theater. Not sure how the 3D element of it will be at home, but I think it would still be a good movie even without the 3D "gimmick".

For those of you that did not see the remake of MY BLOODY VALENTINE, click HERE to view the trailer, courtesy of Yahoo movies. You can also view 6 clips of the film as well!!

Also, I have heard very good things about TRUE BLOOD, the vampire series from HBO, so that might be something for all you die hard vampire fans might want to check out!

A Classic Book I Will Actually Read!! "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" by Jane Austen (and Seth Grahame-Smith)

Let me start off by saying I have never read the original "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen. I know it is considered one of the great classics of literary history, but how good could it really be if it didn't have zombies in it? Well now we get to find out how good this book could (and should) have been thanks to author Seth Grahame-Smith. Seth has gone back and fixed this book and made it the wild zombie adventure that it always wanted to be. I picked up a copy and can't wait to get started on it. Here is the description from the back of the book, tell me this doesn't sound sweet!!

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains." So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she's soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Can she vanquish the spawn of Satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry? Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism, and thousands of rotting corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies transforms a masterpiece of world literature into something you'd actually want to read.

YES!! I will now actually read Pride and Prejudice (and zombies) and I will read any other literary "classics" if Mr. Grahame-Smith will fix them too!! Might I suggest "War and Peace and Zombies"? I have always wanted to read that, but refuse to until I know there will be scenes of Zombie Hordes chomping on brains!!!!

Also, like any good zombie story, a sequel is already planned. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Part 2 has a release date listed as October 31 of this year. I also read an interview with the author and he is also thinking of writing a biography of Abraham Lincoln! We will find out that Abe wasn't just brutally honest and didn't just help free the slaves, but apparently he was one hell of a zombie hunter as well!! I can't wait!

Happy reading!!

Movie To Keep An Eye On: BLACK DEVIL DOLL

This is a movie I have had my eye on for a while, and I think you should too....BLACK DEVIL DOLL!! This looks like a crazy film that reminds me of the sleazy drive in sexploitation films you would find at your local drive-in back in the 60's or 70's. Its basically a movie with a killer doll that is a cross between Chucky and Shaft. Do you really need to know any more than that? Ok, well maybe you do. Here is the official synopsis from the films official site, http://www.blackdevildoll.com/ :

"A young, moist, buxom teen vixen finds herself hurled into an odyssey of forbidden sex and unspeakable violence after an innocent evening dabbling in the occult. What started as a simple child's game has now become a fight for her life! What is this evil that she has summoned from beyond? And why does it have a fro? What kind of horrific acts will she be subjected to? And what price will her super-hot, half-nude friends have to pay? But more importantly, how much Caucasian blood will have to be shed to stop....the BLACK DEVIL DOLL?!!"

HA....sign me up. Sounds fun! Click here to go to the official site's TRAILERS page to catch a peek of the Black Devil Doll in action! WARNING....the UNRATED trailer is not for the kiddos!!

Movie Reveiw: RetarDEAD

The second film from filmmakers Dan West and Rick Popko is very special horror/comedy called RETARDEAD. This is their followup film to MONSTURD (see my review a few posts down) and I think the title RETARDEAD pretty much speaks for itself! The plot involves the evil Dr. Stern, back to wreak havoc on the poor citizens of Butte County. This time, Dr. Stern has created an "intelligence serum" that can make the most simple minded people turn into geniuses. So naturally, Dr. Stern gets a job at the Butte County School for Special Education to test his serum on his unsuspecting students. At first, everything is going great, but there is one problem with Dr. Sterns serum....after a while the people who have used the serum turn in flesh eating zombies!! The zombie make up is just ok..mainly just people painted blue, although some they use for closeups have a little better zombie makeup to look more zombified (is that a work or did I just make that up?). Some of the gore/special effects are quite impressive. There are quite a few deaths by people getting their intestines ripped from their bodies by the retardead zombies. Obviously played to be so over the top that it gets a laugh, it serves its purpose. There is a ridiculous amount of blood (red paint?) spilled and sprayed over everything in this film.

While talking to Dan and Rick last weekend, they told me the budget for MONSTURD was around $3000 and the budget for RETARDEAD was around $15,000. You can really see the difference in these two films, in terms of effects mainly. If they keep going at this rate, I can't wait until their next film!! ("Dawn of the Retardead" maybe?). Once again, if you are fans of the Troma films, then you will love RETARDEAD!

Movie Review: TOKYO GORE POLICE

Let me start off by saying that I have always considered Peter Jackson's BRAINDEAD (aka. DEAD ALIVE) to be the goriest film I have ever seen. I have never seen so much blood in a movie until I saw that film and never have again until just recently, when I watched this movie. TOKYO GORE POLICE is a Japanese film full of horror, gore, and just plain craziness you expect from the movies distributed by Tokyo Shock. The story is about the Tokyo police in the near future and their battle with a group of super-criminals called "engineers". The engineers are a new breed of superhuman that can bio-fuse their open wounds with weapons. Confused? You have to see this to believe it. Words can't do this movie justice. I can't describe to you how much blood you will see if you watch this movie. While normally that would be horribly gross, it is done in such an over the top way, that it is almost comedic. If someone were to even nick themselves shaving in this movie the entire bathroom would be a pool of red blood in less than 10 seconds. Blood sprays from everything and on everything, even on the camera lens in a few scenes. Good stuff...but don't take my word for it. Here is a trailer so you can see for yourself:

Enjoy...don't watch if the sight of blood makes you squeamish!!

A Few More Pics From The Texas Frightmare Weekend!

Here are a few more pics from this past weekends Horror Convention.

One thing I love about Horror Conventions are the costumes that people come dressed in...its like Halloween in the middle of the year!

Here are the best of the costumes I saw:

Dr. Herbert West from RE-ANIMATOR

Michael Myers from HALLOWEEN

And the winner.....Zombie Soldier with zombie wife holding (and trying to eat?!) her zombie baby that has busted from her womb!!! Lovely!!

And finally, I would like to thank my wonderful wife April for agreeing to go with me to the Texas Frightmare Weekend, even though she HATES horror movies!! (Opposites attract!) I think she had a good time, though, and she even got her picture taken with JASON VOORHEES! (actually, with actor C. J. Graham, who played Jason in Friday the 13th part VI: Jason Lives).

What a blast!! I can't wait until next year!!!

Movie Review: MONSTURD

While at the Texas Frightmare Weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting 2 filmmakers with passion for making crazy, thoughtless, and just plain fun horror films. Dan West and Rick Popko were on hand selling their first two films on DVD. Their first feature is call "Monsturd" and is the story of a serial killer, Jack Schmidt, that escapes prison and hides out underground in the sewer. Little does he know, the local chemical company has been draining waste down into the city sewer and when he falls into the gunk, he mutates with the chemical waste, to become a monster, er..monsturd, made of human feces! Dan West and Rick Popko play the bumbling local sheriff deputies that are trying to hunt down Jack Schmidt. They provide most of the comedy and really keep this movie afloat, without being too corny. Jack Schmidt, now the monsturd, begins terrorizing the citizens of the town through their commodes. The local Sheriff, played by Paul Weiner, comes up with the brilliant idea to fill supersoaker water guns with a pepto bismol type medicine to spray on the monster. He also devises a plan to lure the monsturd out of the sewer into the sunlight (to dry it up) and release one million flies to eat the monsturd!! Brilliant!! This reminds me of the films of Troma, so if you are a fan of the Troma films, then you will love this one!

This movie is a really crappy film...and this time, that's a compliment!!

I'm Back From Texas Frightmare Weekend!!

What a great trip we had! We met lots of nice people and great celebrities!! Here are some pics of celebs I got to meet!!

ALICE COOPER during his Q&A panel. (Sorry for the poor pic quality..I was about 6 rows back so this is best pic I could get!)

Me with BOBBI SUE LUTHER (left) and JANA KRAMER (right). Bobbi Sue and Jana were in the film "Laid to Rest" that was screened at the convention. Bobbie Sue will also be seen in the "Night of the Demons" remake coming out soon. Jana can also be seen on the new "90210" starring as the character Portia.

MARILYN BURNS - Sally from the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"!!

TERI MCMINN - Teri played Pam in the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". Pam was the one that got the horrific death by meat hook thanks to Leatherface!

TOBI HOOPER - One of my main reasons to go to Texas Frightmare Weekend was to meet this true Master Of Horror! For those that don't know, Mr. Hooper has directed many classic films such as "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "Salem's Lot", and "Poltergeist" among many more!

C.J. GRAHAM - C.J. Played Jason in "Friday the 13th: Part 6". C.J. now makes the 3rd Jason from the Original Friday the 13th movies that I have met...someday I hope to meet them all!!

This is me with DEREK MEARS - He played the new Jason in the "Friday the 13th" remake that came out earlier this year.

This is TYLER MANE - he played Michael Myers in Rob Zombie's "Halloween" remake and will be back again in this years "H2".

JASON MEWES - Jason is best known for playing Jay, of Jay and Silent Bob fame. He has done a couple of horror movies, like "Feast" and "The Tripper"

Screen Legend KAREN BLACK! Mrs. Black is best known to horror fans as Mother Firefly from Rob Zombie's "House of 1000 Corpses".

In addition to meeting the celebrities, I also got to go to a few of the movie screenings and the Q&A panels. I always enjoy seeing these screenings with the director and actors in attendance...its fun to watch them on screen then see them right in front of you and be able to meet them and talk to them. Here are the movies that I caught the screening of and what I thought about them:
UNTITLED HORROR COMEDY - This was the first screening I saw and I really enjoyed it. The acting was good, most of the effects were good, and it was actually pretty funny. The filmmakers took audience suggestions on what to name the film, with the winner getting mentioned in the credits. Wish me luck!!
LAID TO REST - By far the best of the movies I watched, this is a great slasher film that should of had a wide release in the theaters. It was truly scary with some crazy effects that I have never seen before, which makes sense seeing as this was directed by Robert Hall. Hall is a remarkable make-up/special effectsspecialist who has worked on tons of movies including: "Quarantine", "Pineapple Express", and "Superbad" as well has many TV shows such as
"Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles", "Angel", and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".
PATHOGEN - This is a zombie movie about a small town whose water supply is contaminated with something that turns anyone who drinks it into "zombies". What was so special about this film was that is was written and directed by a girl named Emily Hagins who was only 12 years old when she made this film! She is now 16 and working on her new film, "The Retelling". This is defiantly a career to keep an eye on. With more experience, and bigger budgets, Emily could be an up and coming force in the horror community. I got a chance to talk to Emily after the screening and she is a super sweet, down to earth girl who seems to just have fun making movies. Good luck to her on her future projects!
Check her out on her website: http://www.cheesynuggets.com/
iMURDERS - This was my final film to watch, and I really wish I could say better things about it. This film had lots of stars including Tony Todd, William Forsythe, and even Billy Dee Williams! I expected a lot out of this cast, but was pretty disappointed. The plot was too involved to the point of total confusion at one point.....although it did have a nice twist ending and when it was revealed who the killer was, I have to admit I was surprised, so that was good. Overall, though, I have to say pass on this one. I must say the main actress, Terri Colombino was the best part of this film. She is beautiful and very talented, definitely the best of all the actors in this film.
