DVD Review: INFESTATION

I just finished watching a fun film called INFESTATION. It would be classified under the "Monster movie" sub genre of the Horror genre. The movie is about bug....huge bugs. Here is the plot synopsis from the back of the DVD:

Fear takes over a mundane workday when slacker office drone Cooper (Chris Marquette) wakes up in a massive cocoon spun by mutant, flesh-eating insects. One by one, Cooper unwraps those around him, forming a team of strangers to fight off the infestation. The team and other survivors must battle to say alive and take back the Earth by fighting off gigantic flying bugs and human hybrid mutants.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. While obviously shot on a low budget, the filmmakers make the most of it with some pretty good effects. There is a good amount of comedy within the movie and actually some decent acting for this type of film. Chris Marquette does a wonderful job as the main male lead, Cooper, and keeps the film light and funny throughout. Also...if you have never seen a zombie human/spider mutant, you will not be able to say so after watching this film. I highly recommend this film if you wanna just take your mind off stuff and just sit back and have a good time. Plus..you gotta love this films tag-line: "Prepare For Global Swarming"!

Ha! Classic!

Although I liked the film, my buddy Scott did not. For an opposite view on INFESTATION, check out his movie review of the film at his blog HERE. Scott and I are usually dead on when it comes to films, but we will have to agree to disagree on this one!! HA.

Have you seen INFESTATION? If so, leave a comment and let me know what you thought!

Must watch short film: THE HORRIBLY SLOW MURDERER WITH THE EXTREMELY INEFFICIENT WEAPON

THE HORRIBLY SLOW MURDERER WITH THE EXTREMELY INEFFICIENT WEAPON was written and directed by filmmaker Richard Gale. It is a short film running about 10 minutes in length and is one of the funniest horror parodies I have ever watched. The short film is shot in the style of a movie trailer. While having one of the greatest titles of any film I have ever seen, it also boasts one of the best tag lines ever: "It will kill you. Even if it takes the rest of your life". That will make more sense after actually viewing the film. Do yourself a favor and watch this now...it is hilarious! Thanks to my buddy Scott Baker for finding this hilarious short film and pointing it out to me!

Halloween is just around the corner..time to carve pumpkins!!!

My first pumpkin carving for this Halloween is none other than Jason Voorhees from the FRIDAY THE 13th films! I think it turned out pretty good, don't you? I used a stencil from Zombiepumpkins.com. Zombiepumpkins is a great side with over 200 patterns (212+ according to the site). To print the patterns, you have to join, but you can join for as little as $2 (paid through Paypal). For the $2 membership level, you get to print any 2 patterns of your choice. If you choose the $5 level, you get to print any 25 patterns of your choice. If you join for $10, you get to print ALL of the patterns, and if you do the $20 level, you get access to all 212+ patters plus access to 10 bonus patterns. Let me know what you think of my first pumpkin carving...next, I plan to try the Freddy Krueger pattern!! Check back in a day or so and I will hopefully have it done and posted here.

THE FOURTH KIND trailer....

While watching PARANORMAL ACTIVITY again the other night at the theater, I saw a preview for this new film called THE FOURTH KIND. Here is the plot from imdb.com:

1n 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is called an encounter of the first kind. When evidence is collected, it is known as an encounter of the second kind. When contact is made with extraterrestrials, it is the third kind. The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. Modern-day, Alaska, where-mysteriously since the 1960s-a disproportionate number of the population has been reported missing every year. Despite multiple FBI investigations of the region, the truth has never been discovered. Here in this remote region, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented. The Fourth Kind exposes the terrified revelations of multiple witnesses. Their accounts of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film.

I have mixed feelings about this trailer...I love the fact that it is based on actual events. But is all the action just going to be people yelling and squiggling around on a couch?

Movie Review: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

Did you know that you can forget to breathe? I didn't either until viewing PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. At one point I started feeling weird and realized I hadn't taken a breath in a while. I took a deep breath and felt much better. A scene was so intense, I actually forgot to breathe for a few seconds....awesome!! I have heard mixed reviews on this film. Some people love it, some hate it. I don't understand how you could hate this movie. I thought it was great from start to finish. For those that don't know the plot, it is very simple. A couple, Katie and Micah, moves into a house and start hearing noises and noticing things being moved around. Micah brings home a video camera one day and sets it up at night to try to get a glimpse of anything out of the ordinary. That's it pretty simple! But what he records on his camera is not so simple to understand or justify. I love how the movie starts out with something simple like a door moving a little bit back and forth, and then each night gets more and more complicated, with crazy sounds, shadows caught on camera, and then eventually, the crazy final night (which I wont reveal here in case some have not seen it yet).
I thought this movie was really well made, esp. since the budget is rumored to be only $11,000 dollars. That is $11 THOUSAND dollars...unheard of for a theatrical release in today's times. Also...a lot of people are comparing this to THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT from about 10 years ago...don't worry, it is not a total letdown like TBWP was. This movie is great and actually lives up to it's hype. If you haven't seen it yet, please, do yourself a favor and go see this movie right now! And remember, don't forget to breathe!

Movie review: ZOMBIELAND

Let me start of by saying that I had heard nothing but good things about ZOMBIELAND after it came out. Great reviews and people talking about how awesome it was. I was afraid that people had built it up too much, and I was expecting a little bit of a let down upon finally getting to view the film myself. Well...I wasn't close to being let down! In fact, I don't think people were talking about the film enough!! While it did have its flaws (who turned on and off the roller coaster they rode on??), overall it was a great film. The humor was well mixed with the scares and gore. Yes, I think we have ourselves the newest horror comedy classic. Up till now we have been riding on the greatness that was SHAUN OF THE DEAD, now we can focus on this newest Horror-Comedy epic! Woody Harrelson was the epitome of coolness in this film. I have always liked him as an actor, but now really like him after this role. Also, I think it is old news by now, so I don't think I am spoiling anything here, but the cameo by Bill Murry was great. (And stay through the end of the credits for a few seconds of bonus Murry footage). Anyway, it was a great, fun, crazy, film that won't win any awards, but will definitely take it's place in history as one of the better zombie films.

If you have already seen the film, comment below and let me know what you thought of the film. Have any of you seen it and didn't like it? Let us hear your opinion!

DVD Review: THE HILLS RUN RED

The other night I had the privilege of watching a great film, THE HILLS RUN RED. This is a direct-to-dvd horror film, but don't let that fool you. The film was very worthy of a theatrical release and should have been shown theatrically to a wide audience. I hope fans of horror will find this film and watch it. This was one of the more enjoyable horror films I have seen in a long time. In fact, I can honestly say it is one of my new favorite horror films!! The plot involves a group of teens obsessed with finding a horror film called "The Hills Run Red" that played only one time in the theater, then was promptly pulled due to its horrific content. The film was lost forever and the director never heard from again. When the lead character Tyler hears about this, he is obsessed with finding a print of the film to see it for himself. He finds the daughter of the director, Wilson Wyler Concannon, and asks for her help in finding a print of the film. She agrees to take him to her father's old house in the woods where the movie was shot. Once there, all hell breaks loose and they figure out that Wilson Wyler Concannon might not be quite done with his film after all. Maybe he is still shooting his "Director's Cut" and Tyler and his friends might have starring roles!! The film is full of good scares, great gore, and is a great horror film for fans of slasher movies.

DVD Reveiw: DEMONIACS

Last night I watched the 1974 Jean Rollin film, LES DEMONIAQUES (DEMONIACS). For those not familiar with Jean Rollin, he is a French born director known mainly for this many Vampire films. DEMONIACS was a little different, it was actually the first movie I saw of his that wasn't about Vampires. The film is about a group of "wreckers" that lure ships into the rocky shore and they ravage the ships and rape and kill people on board. On one night, after two beautiful young women emerge from the wreckage, they rape and kill them. Or do they? Suddenly the leader of the wreckers is seeing visions of them. Are they haunting him or did the girls mysteriously come back to life to life to seek revenge on those that raped and beat them? It seems as though the girls did come back and are headed to a monastery where a demon is being help captive (apparently to Jean Rollin, a demon is an over actor in a gaudy costume with bad dialog). Anyway, if they free this "demon" and surrender their bodies to him, then his power will transfer to their bodies for one night...long enough for them to use them against the wreckers and take their revenge upon them. Oh, and did I mention said "demon" was guarded by a woman dressed up like a circus clown...because "no one would think to look for a demon being guarded by someone is such a crazy outfit"! HA!
The film has everything you would expect from a Jean Rollin film including the bad dialog, bad acting, confusing plot, and, of course, the ever famous gratuitous nudity. While not a great movie by any means, it really wasn't a bad movie. And compared to other Jean Rollin films, then this is one of his better efforts. Some films are bad, and then some are so bad and crazy that I can't help but like them. I think this film falls into that category.

I was trying to find a trailer to post for you to view, but didn't have any luck finding one online. I did find a scene from the film on Youtube. Click HERE to watch a scene where the girls have cornered the female member of the wreckers and try to kill her.

The CHILDREN OF THE CORN remake is intriguing, but it was made for the Sci-Fi channel (now SyFy), and they have not had a good track record with their horror films lately (Remember RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 4 & 5...yuck!). Also, you might want to click on DARK COUNTRY and watch the trailer...it looks pretty good, although I have heard nothing about it.

ZOMBIELAND brought in $25 million dollars at the box office it's opening weekend already covering its production budget of $23.6 million dollars. Everything else will be pure profit for the studio. Lets hope this movie does keeps doing good and paves the way for more zombie movies! The popularity of ZOMBIELAND raised a good question..why do we love zombies so much? Well, thanks to my buddy Scott who found this article by CNN's Doug Gross titled "Why we love those rotting, hungry, putrid zombies", now we know!

I have not seen ZOMBIELAND yet, but plan on doing so this coming weekend. If you have seen it already, comment and let everyone know what you thought!

Check out the trailer for THE CRAZIES remake

Just released is the long awaited trailer for the remake of George A. Romero's THE CRAZIES. While some are saying this can not be as good as the original, I will be going in with an open mind having yet to see the original (the DVD of the original is on my ebay watch list!). I think this trailer looks terrific, lots of suspense and chances for some good gore scenes. Just for fun, I went and watched the original trailer (link included below) after watching the new trailer just to compare. The original trailer looks great, but it is dated and looks like a perfect candidate for an update. The plot is simple and revolves around the inhabitants of a small Iowa town who are suddenly beset by death and insanity after a plane crash lets loose a mysterious secret biological weapon into the water supply. The film is planned for a theatrical release on Feb. 26th, 2010.

Back from Branson...

I'm back and got to check out the Haunted House and Monster Asylum. This was a very cool attraction and must see for haunted house fans. The gallery of monsters was neat, with everyone from Nosferatu to Freddy Krueger. There were many scares in the haunted house, and would be more fun in a group. I went in solo due to my wife hating scary things (opposites attract!). While going alone might not have been as fun, it was neat because I got to take my time and really study the sets and costumes. The animatronics were great, especially the huge skeleton "thing" at the end. It must be seen to be believed!!!

While I thought I would only be seeing this one horror attraction, I found out about another horror themed attraction through a brochure my wife ran across. It is called the CASTLE OF CHAOS and is called a true 5D attraction!! It is the world's first 3D film, ride, and shooting game in one terrifying adventure!!! It is a 3D HD film shown on 3 different screens. You are seated on a rotating platform that spins at 15rpms from one screen to the next. The seats are equipped with speakers and sensors the release smoke, water, wind, sound, and even foul scents! There are animatronic figures that pop out from time to time as well. Also, they have programmed an interactive system that allows you to shoot at the zombies coming at you on the screen. The top few scorers will be pictured up on the screen at the end. This was a great experience and something I will defiantly do again next time I am in Branson.

The HAUNTED HOUSE AND MONSTER ASYLUM is located on Hwy. 76 right next to Walmart and is part of the Dinosaur Museum.

The CASTLE OF CHAOS is located on Hwy. 76 in the same building as the HOLLYWOOD WAX MUSEUM.

I'm headed out to the Haunted House and Monster Asylum in Branson, MO!

It is October finally, which means Halloween will be here soon! To get into the Halloween spirit, I am headed out today to Branson, MO to check out the Branson HAUNTED HOUSE AND MONSTER ASYLUM!! I have seen this there many times before, but always have the kids with us, so haven't gone in to check it out yet. But today I am going with my wife and with no kids to Branson, so will be checking out the Monster Asylum!!! I will let you know what I think about it upon my return!

LISTen UP! My top 5 movie Zombies of all time!!

My favorite zombie of all time is by far the main zombie from Lucio Fulci's ZOMBIE. The detail of the zombie is great...from the almost to the skull face..the clods of dirt stuck to the face, and especially, the worms coming out of the eye socket. They don't get any better than this.

My next favorite is "Tarman" from my favorite zombie movie, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD. The guy that played Tarman must be extremely skinny...check out the almost just bone arms. The movement of this zombie was spot on and very creepy. You also have to love his bulging eyeballs!!

Next has to be the zombie known as Dr. Tongue from DAY OF THE DEAD! With the bottom part of his jaw ripped off he is a bloody, gory, mess! What's not to love!!

This is the basement zombie from THE EVIL DEAD. Her evil milky white eyes always creep me out...as well of her constant screams of "We'll swallow your soul"!!!!!!!!!!

And finally, we have Bub the zombie, from DAY OF THE DEAD. Bub is the first zombie that was captured and studied for scientific research. Bub is actually smart and shows signs that he can be taught, or more likely "trained" to do some tasks.

Well..there is my list of my favorite, top 5 zombies of all time! What are some of your favorite zombies????
