DVD Review: MAD RON'S PREVUES FROM HELL (1987)

Virgil Films & Entertainment just recently released MAD RON'S PREVUES FROM HELL onto DVD for the first time ever! I had never seen or heard of this title before now, but apparently it was quite a popular video back in the VHS days. The film is a trailer compilation of 47 different Horror and Exploitation films, but what makes this compilation different from all the others, is that it is actually a movie within itself. Lets see if I can make this make sense....lets start with the synopsis from imbd:

Deranged projectionist Mad Ron shows a movie theater full of rowdy zombies a diverse assortment of horror and exploitation film trailers from his private collection while ventriloquist Nick Pawlow and his foul-mouthed zombie dummy Happy Goldsplatt provide lowbrow comic relief.

The movie stars Nick and the first Zombie ventriloquist dummy that I have ever seen named Happy. They are in the projectionists booth of a theater with Mad Ron. Zombies invade the theater and sit and watch trailers that Mad Ron plays for them. Nick and Happy do a comic routine, then they show a few trailers, and then they cut back to the Nick and Happy talking about the films and the Zombies in the theater. The previews are the main event here though, with titles ranging from mainstream (THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD to more lesser known films such as HORROR ON SNAPE ISLAND, BLOODEATERS, and THE HOUSE OF EXORCISM, just to name a few.

All the trailers are a treat to see, of course, but the theater full of Zombies and the comic routines of Nick and Happy are a real treat too. The Zombie effects are actually very well done for what looks to be a pretty low budget feature overall. The film was made in the 80's and it definitely shows, although that is not a bad thing at all in this case. The video quality is good, but you can definitely tell it is a transfer from a VHS and it gives the look and feel of watching a VHS movie, something I have not done in years! It was actually very cool and very fitting since the movie was made in the 80's, to watch it as if you were watching a VHS tape. It brought a sense of nostalgia and reminded me of the days of my childhood, riding my bike down to the local Mom & Pop video store to browse the Horror isle. Also, with the movie being made in the 80's, you get the cream of the crop here when it comes to the trailers they show. Every trailer is a classic and worth seeing.

While there are a lot of trailer compilation DVD's out there, this is by far my favorite of the bunch. Mad Ron and his Zombie pals add something to this trailer compilation that many others are missing....FUN!

Check out the trailer for the killer Santa Clause film, SINT

It looks like killer Santa movies is the popular thing now. I read on Shattered Ravings a couple of weeks ago about a Finnish film called RARE EXPORTS. That movie looked good, but I think we might have a new king of killer Santa movies! Quietearth.us has posted a trailer for a film called SINT, a dutch film (Netherlands) that depicts Santa Claus as a brutal killer who kidnaps and murders children when there is a full moon on Dec. 5th. I am assuming "Sint" is the dutch word for 'Saint", but don't quote me on that. Anyway, take a look at the trailer and let me know what you think! Either way, both of these films look better than the U.S. take on a killer Santa with SANTA'S SLAY starring wrester Bill Goldberg! Bleh!!

Don't forget! SHARKTOPUS premiers tonight on the SyFy network!!

The newest SyFy original movie, SHARKTOPUS, premiers tonight on the SyFy network at 9/8 central. The film was produced by Roger Corman and starts Eric Roberts. The film is about a half shark/half octopus creature that gets loose in the ocean and causes terror to anything or anyone in it's path! I don't know about you, but I will be in front of the TV for sure! I love these cheesy creature features that the SyFy channel puts out.

Check out the crazy trailer for BIG TITS ZOMBIE 3D!!

Ha! Yes, you read that title correctly...that was not a typo! BIG TITS ZOMBIE 3D looks like Japan's answer to 2008's ZOMBIE STRIPPERS, except with more craziness and gore (as is the case with most Japanese films, I guess)! I can't find much of a plot explanation, but from the looks of the trailer, I guess a group of strippers battles a horde of zombies! There is really nothing else you need to know! So, without further ado, here you go:

Rob Zombie announces his newest project: LORDS OF SALEM

Deadline.com broke the news earlier this week that director Rob Zombie is shelving his planned remake of THE BLOB in order to focus on a new, original film. The film will be called LORDS OF SALEM and will be set in contemporary Salem, where the inhabitants receive a demonic visit from a 300-year old coven of witches! Sounds pretty cool, and with Rob Zombie behind it, I am definitely looking forward to this.

Thanks to my friends Scott and Phillip for bringing this breaking news to my attention!

What do you think? Are you looking forward to this new project from Rob Zombie? Or..would you have rather seen his remake of THE BLOB?

DVD Review: ALBERT FISH (2007)

I recently got the chance to check out a film called ALBERT FISH. This is a docudrama about the famed serial killer of the same name. The film was written, produced, and directed by filmmaker John Borowski. Albert Fish was one of the most disturbed individuals you will ever encounter. If you have never heard or studied Albert Fish, I highly recommend this film, as it will tell you all you need to know about this heinous individual. Here is the basic synopsis of the film from imdb:

ALBERT FISH, the horrific true story of elderly cannibal, sadomasochist, and serial killer, who lured children to their deaths in Depression-era New York City. Distorting biblical tales, Albert Fish takes the themes of pain, torture, atonement and suffering literally as he preys on victims to torture and sacrifice. Includes interviews with artist and Odditorium owner, Joe Coleman, and true-crime author, Katherine Ramsland, Ph.D.

I have to start by saying I love movies about serial killers. I hope that doesn't sound weird, but I have always been fascinated by true crime stories, especially those involving serial killers. They are very interesting to study and it amazes me as to what some people are capable of doing. Of the few I have read books on and studied, Albert Fish was by far the most bizarre. Fish was accused of killing many people, mainly children, but the main case he is most famous for is the "kidnapping" and killing of a young girl by the name of Grace Budd in 1928. I put "kidnapping" in quotes, because he didn't actually take her, but she willingly accompanied him to what she thought was a birthday party for his niece. Her mother was reluctant at first, but her father finally convinced his wife that it was ok for little Grace to go with Albert. Needless to say there was no birthday party, and that was the last they would ever see of Grace. Albert Fish wrote a letter of confession to the Budd family. It is a very detailed and graphic letter of what he did to Grace. I can't imagine the horror her parents must have felt as they read every detail of how their little girl was killed and then what Albert Fish did to her body, including cannibalism.

John Borowski's film is the first film I have seen about Albert Fish. I have read a couple of books, but seeing the film hit me a lot harder than just written words. This film contains a good mixture of actual file film and photos, as well as reenactments. The first part of the film is a voice over of what is supposed to be Albert Fish, reading his letter that he wrote to the Budd family. Hearing these words in "Albert's" own voice is very discomforting and really makes what he did really sink in. The narrators voice in this film is very good and the film contains very good music and is shot extremely well. The film is full of details about the life of Albert Fish and tells many stories, some of which I had never heard before. One of which I found most interesting, was a story of when Albert was taking Grace to the "party". They traveled by train and as they got off the train, Grace reminded Albert that he forgot his package he had been carrying. Little Grace ran back onto the train to where they had been seated and retrieved Albert's package. Little did she know that this "package" contained an assortment of knives that would be the cause of her death within hours.
I am extremely impressed with how well this film was made. It is a brilliant look into the life and mind of one of the most troubled people in history. If you have any interest in true crime and subjects such as this, ALBERT FISH is a must have DVD.

The DVD is packed with special features including exclusive interviews, Deleted scenes, trailers, production stills, a History of the Electric Chair, and more!

Check out the awesome comic book company, VIRUS COMIX!!

I have been a fan of Horror comics for years, and while there are some great Horror titles out there, it seems there are more bad ones than good. This is why I am so excited to have run across a company called VIRUS COMIX. This small, 2 man company is run by Ju Gomez and Jason Crawley, although they do use outside talent for some of their comics. These comics are what most Horror fans are looking for in their Horror comics. The art is superb and the stories are nothing but fun and entertaining. Here are the titles I was able to get my hands on, with a brief synopsis of each title and then my thoughts on each:

SON OF 6 - This is a crossover that won't disappoint, with a surprise ending. Calavera and sonof6 must work together to destroy Megs' evil before it's too late! Calavera joins the hunt from Enrico Teodorani, famed Italian creator and us at Virus Comix! A tale before the mask, a new killer is in THE WARD...her name is CALAVERA and she is hunting the 2000 year old demon called Meg Deviantuan.

I started with this one because honestly, it was my least favorite title of the 3 I read. That is not to say I didn't enjoy it, but the story was a little confusing at times. Other than that it was a good read and I absolutely love the artwork. Simple, yet effective in a stark black and white format.

PSYCHO HUNTER VS. ZOMBIE COMMANDOS FROM HELL - The Blood Queen wishes rest for her and her chosen ones in The Ward following the Zombie War. Morgonna has her own plans! The Chosen Ones must destroy her devil - the killer demon known as Psycho Hunter. If they can do what no other creature has done before, they may stay. If not, hell has more to burn! The fight of the century is here! 10 years in the making! Ju Gomez's Psycho Hunter goes up against Steph Dumais's Zombie Commandos From Hell in this crossover from Virus Comix.

I loved this comic as soon as I read the title. And unlike some comics, the title lived up to its name, as the story shows you a non stop battle between a horde of zombies and a hellish demon. This is one-shot, which is perfect for those comic fans like me with a short attention span. The art from outside artist Steph Dumais is great, and while it is a little "cartoonish" for something as "serious" as a demon fighting Zombies, it seems to just add the fun of the book overall.

BLOKE'S TOMB OF HORROR -- Each book in this series is an anthology of short Horror stories. The short stories all showcase a variety of different
artist and writers.

This was by far my favorite books by Virus Comix. I got issue #1 and #2, and these comics were by far some of the best Horror comics that I have ever read! As stated above, I have a rather short attention span, so I love anthology books such as these. Issue 1 contains 4 stories, including stories about Vampires, Werewolves, and Demons. Each story was done by a different artist and it is very cool to see the different styles all together in one book. The story titled, Johnny Demonic: Curse of the Black Widow was drawn by Anthony Ruggiero, and contains some of the most impressive artwork I have seen in a comic. The detail in his drawings is amazing and worthy of a purchase of this title alone. Also equally impressive is the story DJustine: The Valley of Lost Time. The artist for this story goes by Manolo, and his drawings look more like paintings and even photographs in some scenes. Very impressive stuff!
Issue 2 is even bigger, containing 7 different short stories. A couple of highlight from this book include The Art of Dying, the story of a man who finds he has to power to kill people, simply by drawing how he wants them to die. Needless to say, his power overwhelms him and his last drawing ends up as a disaster for our powerful artist. The other highlight for me in this book, is a second DJustine story called DJustine Vs. Cemetery Jane. While the story is extremely short (only 2 pages), the artwork again steals the show, with some of the most beautiful images ever put on the pages of a comic book.

If you are a comic fan, I urge you to check out all the titles from Virus Comix. These are some of my favorite Horror comics to date, and I guarantee that you will not be disappointed.

Here is a full list of Virus Comix's titles that are available for purchase at IndyPlanet.com

DVD Review: ZOMBIES BY DESIGN (2006)

Welcome to the first review by our new contributing writer, Scott Baker! His first assignment was to review the Troubled Moon Films feature, ZOMBIES BY DESIGN, which was written and directed by Dave Wascavage. Lets see what Scott thought about the film:

It probably goes without saying that making a film is not an easy task to undertake. Not only do you need a top-notch idea and solid script-writing, but you need good, talented actors, a hard-working production team, access to credible special-effects tools, and, of course, money. Good films can and have been made with only some of these attributes, but they are certainly few and far between. Unfortunately, Zombies by Design is not one of these rarities.
For those of you not familiar with the plot of ZOMBIES BY DESIGN, here is a synopsis:

Evil scientist Lex Blackheart has developed a way to remotely control zombie subjects to do his bidding. But when the military decides not to buy into his project, Blackheart takes matters into his own hands and unleashes a plan of revenge on those who have wronged him. Unfortunately, the rest of the world will be involved as well. A rag-tag group of people must band together to stop Blackheart and his zombies from taking over the world.

I did not want my first review on 4H to be a negative one, but regrettably I have no choice. This movie is terrible overall and an epic fail on many individual levels. I am chagrined to say that this one won’t even go in the So-Bad-It’s-Good category. It’s just plain awful.

Take, for example, the acting. I can handle bad acting to a certain degree, but wow…the actors and actresses in Zombies by Design were so bad that I almost couldn’t finish watching the film. Certain characters in this film made me want to reach into the screen and choke them. The foremost of these was Lex Blackheart himself, played by David M. Sitbon. The evil laugh he used that was supposed to personify the Blackheart persona was enough to make you beg for earplugs. And the over-dramatic emphasis on all of his lines made me cringe. Holy cow. It was too much.

The special effects started off promising, with bursting blood-spurts and sickening gore, but they quickly dropped into lazy, 1980’s-circa Nintendo-style computer graphics instead. I seriously thought at one point that I had started watching a different movie half-way through Zombies by Design. The real-fake blood was replaced with sorry CG spurting gushers that looked utterly cartoonish on film (not to mention the fact that many times they didn’t match up with the action). And there were several scenes cut into the action that were supposed to show gory, blood-drenched bodies…but instead showed boxy graphics of bodies that, no kidding, looked pixilated, just like they had come out of a Super Mario Bros. game from an ORIGINAL back-in-the-day Nintendo.

Don’t get me wrong: I can certainly understand working with a low budget. But to me, there’s no excuse for incorporating decent-looking ‘real’ special effects with cheap late-80’s knock-offs that my six year-old son who has minimal computer skills could do better. Maybe the effects team ran out of money, or maybe they found themselves in a time-crunch. I don’t know. But glopping a bunch of chocolate syrup onto the actors would have looked much better (and believable) than the CG that was used.

The ONLY saving grace I found with this film was that it was shot very well. Many of the camera angles used were unique and therefore gave a minuscule spark to the lackluster writing and acting. I found myself more interested in how they put the camera into position for specific shots instead of the story itself or the action. I would definitely like to see more of this Director of Photography’s work, but only inside of a decent movie.

I do not enjoy hammering an independent filmmaker’s work, as I am aspiring to be one myself. But more effort should have been put forth on this film to ensure it was the type of quality that movie audiences want to see. Good acting can sometimes make up for a poor script, and a good script can sometimes make up for lacking special effects. But when all aspects of the film fall short, nothing remains but a travesty.

In this reviewer’s opinion, Zombies by Design should certainly not go on your Watch List.

I have found the greatest Zombie iphone app!!!

I recently got my first iphone, and like any good Horror phone, I immediately started looking through all the apps trying to find some cool Horror games and more specifically, Zombie games. I think I have finally found the best Zombie game for the iphone. It is called ZOMBIE INFECTION by Gameloft, and will have you addicted the first time you play. There is a free version which lets you play just the first level, and I have a feeling that anyone that gets the free version (like I did), will instantly upgrade to the full game (like I did) after playing that one level. One level just isn't enough!

The game is almost a first person shooter, although you do see your character right in front, so technically I guess it is a 3rd person shooter. The game controls are very simple and easy to use and the graphics are amazing for a game on the iphone. It really looks like you are playing an Xbox or Playstation game.

You can download the free version from the app store, or just save yourself some time and download the full game for only $2.99!!
I guarantee you will love this game!!

Do you have any other favorite Zombie games for the iphone? If so, let me know! I will do a future post about some of the other great Horror apps I have found!

Check out the trailer for PRIEST

If you haven't seen the trailer for PRIEST yet, you should definitely take a look at it. It looks like it is going to be a lot of fun. Here is the basic plot from imdb:

PRIEST, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller, is set in an alternate world -- one ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires. The story revolves around a legendary Warrior Priest from the last Vampire War who now lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the Church. When his niece is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires, Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on a quest to find her before they turn her into one of them. He is joined on his crusade by his niece's boyfriend, a trigger-fingered young wasteland sheriff, and a former Warrior Priestess who possesses otherworldly fighting skills

From the looks of the trailer, it looks like this film is a nice mix of Horror, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Action. It looks like there will be something in this movie for everyone. PRIEST is scheduled to be released in theaters in both 2D and 3D format May 13th, 2011.

Check out the awesome trailer for FADING OF THE CRIES

Thanks to 4H contributor, Scott Baker, for bringing this trailer to my attention. FADING OF THE CRIES looks to be a good mixture of Horror, martial-arts, and fantasy, all rolled up into one beautiful film. Some of the visuals in this trailer are just breathtaking. Here is the plot of the film from imdb:

Jacob, a young man armed with a deadly sword, saves Sarah, a teenage girl, from Mathias, a malevolent evil that has begun plaguing a small farmland town while in search of an ancient necklace that had belonged to Sarahs Uncle.Jacob sets out to get Sarah home safely, running through streets, fields, churches and underground tunnels, while being pursued by hordes of demonic creatures. Along the way, both come to terms with the demons within themselves - Sarah begins to understand her hatred towards her mother and sister may be unjustified and Jacob discovers the secrets of his past, realizing the only way to truly defeat the demons is to return to the very place his family was murdered.

I can't wait to see this film. If if is anywhere near as good as this trailer is, I think we are all in for a big treat!!

DVD Review: NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: REANIMATED (2009)

Wild Eye Releasing and MVD Visual are releasing NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: REANIMATED next Tuesday, September 21st. I got a chance to watch an advanced copy, and I have to say that this is one DVD you will want to add to your collection for sure.

The premise behind this project is very interesting. Mike Schneider was the director/organizer of this project, and he got over 100 different artist to re-create George Romero's classic NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD using nothing but different art forms and types of animations. Each artist took a certain scene from the film and animated it in their own, unique way. Almost every form of animation you can think of is used to recreate this film, including Oil Paintings, comic illustrations, stop motion, simple sketches, even sock puppets! All this was then edited together and placed in sync with the original audio track! What you are left with is a movie you don't just watch, but experience.

Imagine going to an art museum. Usually that is a very boring thing to do, in my opinion anyway. But imagine you were going to an art museum that had nothing but scenes painted and drawn from NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD! I bet you would go to that! Well this movie puts all the paintings, drawings, etc. together on one disc for you to look at! It really was fun to sit back and just enjoy all this great zombie themed art.

I was surprised at how well it was edited all together. With so many different styles and looks meshed together, and with some scenes only lasting a few seconds, I was really worried about the movie seeming to choppy to really enjoy. I was relieved to see how well this film was put together.

If you have never seen the original film, then first off, you need to re-evaluate your priorities in life. Second, go see the original film NOW! (You can actually watch it free online here) It is a true classic that kick started zombie cinema as we know it today. Then, watch this new "Reanimated" version. It could be hard to follow if you have never seen the original, so you definitely need that prior knowledge of the original film to follow along and just enjoy the awesome artwork.

This is a perfect meshing of two art forms. The film mixes visual art such as drawing/painting with the art of film making. This is a must have for any fan of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD or any fan of art in general. Either way, it makes for a very enjoyable experience.

The DVD come loaded with extra features, including a behind the scenes look at the animation processes, 2 different commentary tracks, alternate/deleted "scenes", trailers, some short films, and more! There is even a cool introduction of the film from the legendary Count Gore De Vol!

Be on the lookout next Tuesday, 9/21, and purchase a copy of this awesome DVD, or, you can order on line from the link below.

Check out the totally off the wall, crazy trailer for HAUSU aka. HOUSE (1977)

Wow, I have seen some crazy Japanese films before, but this one might take the top spot!! HAUSU (or HOUSE) came out in 1977 and has to be one of the craziest trailers I have ever seen. I found this trailer while browsing The Horror Effect blog and I just had to share it. I can't wait for this to come out on DVD! Here is the basic plot from imdb:

Oshare (Gorgeous) is excited about spending summer vacation with her father, until she finds out that his beautiful, freakishly serene girlfriend Ryouko would be going as well. Oshare decides she will be going to her aunt's house in the country instead. She brings with her her friends from school - Fanta (who likes to take pictures, and daydreams a lot), KunFuu (who has very good reflexes), Gari/Prof (who is a major nerd), Sweet (who likes to clean), Mac (who eats a lot), and Melody (a musician). However, the girls are unaware that Oshare's aunt is actually dead and the house is actually haunted. When they arrive at the house, crazy events take place and the girls disappear one by one while slowly discovering the secret behind all the madness.

Help fund an awesome Zombie film!!

Ever wanted to have your name in the credits of a Zombie film? Now you can! You can help produce a new Zombie film called, SEVERED. Now I have to admit, I am a little biased towards this film....ok, a LOT biased. Here is why. SEVERED (originally titled, THE WALL) is planned to be the first major production from the newly created Shattered Mind Studios, which was co-founded by newly hired 4H contributor, Scott Baker and me!! The proposed budget is only $8000 and we need your help to raise these funds. A Kickstarter page has been created and we have 43 days from now to raise the money!
Here is the plot of SEVERED from the film's Kickstarter page:

Severed is the story of Markus Pendleton, a soldier struggling to cope with the loss of his family and one of the last surviving members of the human race. Several years have passed since zombies overran the planet. Now, small pockets of humanity fight to stay alive in barricaded camps or farms.
Pendleton’s wife and daughters disappeared a year ago during a zombie attack. While most people believe they are dead or worse, Pendleton holds on to the hope that they are still alive. It is this hope that keeps him going every day.
And hope might be on the horizon for humanity as well. Scientists among the farms have developed infection-resistant fetuses, bioengineered human beings that are not susceptible to zombie bites or fluids. Over thirty-thousand fetuses reside in hidden vaults underneath the farms. These three farms have become the three most important locations on the planet.
When a massive zombie horde is spotted heading towards their farm, Pendleton and a small group of soldiers are dispatched to guard an entry-point in a remote section of the exterior wall. Reinforcements are on the way from Command, but it will take several days for them to arrive. Pendleton and his comrades must guard the gate at all costs.
A freak accident after the group’s arrival at the gate leaves Pendleton cut off from the farm and guarding a massive hole in the wall…alone. With the zombie horde bearing down on him, Pendleton must fight off sleep-deprivation, starvation, and even his own mind in order to keep the zombies from reaching the farm. But when Pendleton realizes his wife and daughters might be somewhere in the horde, he must confront a horrifying reality in order to save the human race…

I hope we can get this movie made, as it would be a lot of fun to film! If you can't help financially, then please help by letting people know about this project. Blog about it...post it on your Facebook and Myspace pages. Tweet it!! Whatever you can do will be a big help!

DVD Review: BLOODY BEACH (2000)

As I’ve mentioned many times before, I’m a big fan of the slasher-flick subgenre, but only so long as the plot is original and the film is well done. For example, SPIRIT CAMP is one of my favorite newer slasher films. The premise is technically unique and the film blends a perfect mix of dark comedy and horror. Finding such balance is hard to do, and any film that pulls it off is note-worthy in my book.

For these reasons, I bring up BLOODY BEACH, a Korean slasher romp from a decade ago. Yes, this is an older film, but it is one definitely worth visiting. The plot of BLOODY BEACH is this:

A group of friends, who know each other only through an Internet chat room, decide to finally meet in-person and schedule a weekend ‘vacation’ in a rented beach-house. But one of the original members of the group who was thought to have killed himself, a man with the handle of Sandmanzz, starts killing the group off one by one. But who is the Sandmanzz? And why does he have a grudge against them? As the body count rises, so do the suspicions. And before the weekend is over, the group must discover who among them is the killer…before time runs out!

Before sitting down to watch this movie, you have to remember the times as they were and keep that in mind. This film was done back in 2000, when Internet chat rooms were in full bloom and ‘safety guidelines’ for meeting face-to-face (or why you shouldn’t) were not well publicized. Thus, a group of strangers meeting for the first time face-to-face was still a viable option, albeit a bad one.

The other thing to keep in mind about this movie is that it IS a foreign film and therefore some of the cultural aspects might throw you for a loop. But if you look past them, you will find a gem of a slasher film, one that I know I’ll revisit before too long.

I loved the way this movie was filmed. There are several unique camera-angles that really give an interesting perspective on the scene. It’s hard to describe in detail…you’ll have to see for yourself what I mean. I also liked how the plot kept building suspense. You are literally guessing and re-guessing about the identity of the killer. And when this person is ultimately revealed, you’ll get a nice jolt of “Ahhhh…I should have seen that coming!”

Although it’s not as gory as I would have liked (there’s a couple of excellent ‘slash’ scenes, though, one in particular where a guy gets his fingers lopped off by a set of pruning shears), BLOODY BEACH still didn’t disappoint when it came to the red stuff. And the production crew didn’t have to use a lot to get their point across. The thrills and spills were indicative of the suspense, and this only added to the terror.

My sole complaint about this film was the lack of an English dub-over. I found reading the subtitles a bit too distracting, and some scenes forced me to backtrack, so I could see the action after I had read the dialogue the first time-around. But that’s my only gripe. This is a well done, well-thought-out thriller, and one I’m glad to add to my collection.

DVD Review: SPRING BREAK MASSACRE (2008)

SPRING BREAK MASSACRE was directed by Michael Hoffman Jr. and written by Hoffman Jr. and Meghan Jones. This is a great throwback to the slasher films of the 80's, but this film brings something new and original to the table.
Here is the basic plot from imdb.com:

A sleepover party during spring-break turns deadly for six beautiful sorority co-eds. Stanley Peterson, convicted serial killer, has escaped from maximum security prison. It's up to the college cuties to unravel the mystery of their assailant before the night is over.

Let me start off by saying that this was a very enjoyable film. It was a lot of fun and the film had a good mixture of humor and Horror. The acting was very good for this type of film and viewers will get to see genre vets Linnea Quigley and Reggie Bannister in the roles of the Sheriff and Deputy.

The movie moves along nicely and there are virtually no slow parts in this film. I was thoroughly entertained the entire running time! While the film doesn't show a lot of gore, it does have it's fair share, and some of the make up effects that are shown are very well done. What this film does differently than most typical slasher films, is bring more mystery into the story. I truly did not realize who the killer was until it was revealed...something that is usually pretty obvious in most films with a "who's the killer" type plot.

This is a great film that will remind you of such classic films as SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE and the SORORITY HOUSE MASSACRE films. The film will give you a very nostalgic feeling and take you back to the days when Horror films were simple and just plain fun.

Movie review: THE LAST EXORCISM (2010)

I finally got a chance to see THE LAST EXORCISM last night, and I must say that this was one of the most enjoyable Horror films I have seen in the theater in a long time. For those of you that aren't familiar with it, here is the full synopsis from the imdb website:

The Reverend Cotton Marcus had performed more exorcisms than he could remember before he visited the Louisiana farm of Louis Sweetzer. That would be a day he wouldn't soon forget. The last person Lious Sweetzer ever thought he would invite to his farm was an exorcist. But his young daughter Nell had been acting so strange. He could think of no other explanation for her behavior than possession by demons. But many long years of attending to those with questionable spiritual infestations has left Cotton a broken man. The faith he once proudly held up as a shield against evil had deserted him long ago. This day has brought Reverend Marcus to the Sweetzers farm where he plans to film a documentary of what he hopes to be his final exorcism. All of his past experience could not begin to prepare him for the terror that lay within. But upon arriving at the already blood drenched family farm, it was soon clear that nothing could have prepared him for the true evil he would encounter there. The Reverend must call upon a near-empty well of faith to protect Nell, his film crew and ultimately himself.

This movie is very well made and the acting is wonderful. It is shot in a documentary style with a hand-held cam style of filming. Rev. Marcus is played very convincingly by Patrick Fabian while the possessed girl, Nell, is played by the excellent Ashley Bell. Nell comes across as one of the sweetest girls you could ever meet, and the viewer finds it hard to believe that she could pull of some of the horrible acts that she is being accused of by her father. Her father's livestock is being slaughtered and he is convinced that Nell is who is doing it. Nell's father then calls in Rev. Marcus to perform the exorcism.

What sets this film apart from the other batch of exorcism films is the fact that the man performing the exorcism, doesn't even really believe in it. Rev. Cotton admits he is a "fraud" so to speak. He admits that what he does is all for show and he even shows you some "tricks of the trade". He justifies doing this though, by saying that usually when someone is "possessed", that it is all mental. If he can come in and perform his act (literally) of exorcism, and it has a psychological effect on the person and they believe they are not possessed anymore, then he has done a commendable service to that person. Either way they believe they are not possessed anymore, so he has done his job. He admits that he does it for the money, because as he says in the film, "The church can't function on love alone".
Seeing this fake exorcism at work is very humorous, but when Rev. Marcus sees that what he is dealing with might not be a psychological condition in the case of Nell, well that is when things get really interesting. Seeing the struggle of Rev. Marcus as he faces off against what he has convinced himself was not real, is a very interesting angle this movie takes.

This is one of the most memorable films you will ever see. This film will stay with you long after you have viewed it, which is the sign of a very well made film. Try to catch this film at the theater if at all possible...the surround sound is very important with this film, as hearing all the creepy sounds around you really adds to the enjoyment of the film.

DVD Review: GRAPHIC SEXUAL HORROR (2009)

This film is very Graphic. It is also very Sexual, and it's a Horror film. So if anything, the filmakers definitely got the title right! GRAPHIC SEXUAL HORROR is a shockumentary about a website called insex.com, a fetish website that was shut down by the Dept. of Homeland Security. The film is being released by Synapse Films and CAV Distributing. Here is the basic plot of the film from the film's Imdb page:

Graphic Sexual Horror takes a peek behind the terrifying facade behind the most notorious of bondage websites, exploring the dark mind of its artistic creator and asking hard questions about personal responsibility. Interviews reveal deep fascinations with bondage and sadomasochism that run parallel, and in fact become irreversibly entwined with the lure of money.

Ok...so this isn't really a Horror film, but it does center around a very Horrible subject matter. The subject matter is a little too extreme for me, so while I can't call this film good, I can definitely say it is a very well made film. The interviews with the creator and the website's models are very interesting. Hearing the model's stories of how they got involved with this website is a real eye opener. Some claim they actually gained pleasure from the acts that were put upon them, but you have to wonder how anyone could enjoy some of this stuff. To see the footage of the modes writhing in pain during a "torture" session, and then seeing them afterwords just chatting and laughing like she didn't do anything out of the ordinary is hard to believe. Of course, to someone that is an active participant in the BDSM culture, I guess this would be just a normal occurrence. To someone like me who is not familiar (or interested) in this culture, it seemed very extreme and disturbing.

Some of the contraptions and situations that the models are put in make for some very squeamish viewing for the viewer, or for this viewer at least. It really makes me wonder how, and why, this site was so popular. Suffocation, caning, electrocution....that is not my idea of a good time. I will take a simple dinner and movie any day!

Some will enjoy this film, some will be appalled by it....some will do both. It is a very well made film from a technical standpoint, and it is always interesting to learn about a lifestyle different from yours, even if it is of the extreme kind.

Check out the trailer for the new film doc, MACHETE MAIDENS UNLEASHED

MACHETE MAIDENS UNLEASHED was written and directed by Mark Hartley, the man that brought us the great documentary on Aussie exploitation films, NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD.
Here is the basic plot of this new documentary from the film's Imdb page:

Karate-kicking midgets! Paper-mache monsters! Busty babes with blades! Filipino genre films of the '70s and '80s had it all. Boasting cheap labour, exotic scenery and non-existent health and safety regulations, the Philippines was a dreamland for exploitation filmmakers whose renegade productions were soon engulfing drive-in screens around the globe like a tidal schlock-wave! At last, the all-too-often overlooked world of drive-in filler from Manilla gets the Mark Hartley (NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD) treatment in Machete Maidens Unleashed! This is the ultimate insiders' account of a faraway backlot where stunt men came cheap, plot was obsolete and the make-up guy was packing heat! Machete Maidens Unleashed! features interviews with cult movie icons Roger Corman, Joe Dante, John Landis, Sid Haig, Eddie Romero and a large assembly of cast, crew and critics, each with a jaw-dropping story to tell about filmmaking with no budget, no scruples, no boundaries and - more often than not - no clothes. Strap yourselves in - and join us for a non-stop Filipino femme-fest, all the way from the jungles of the Pacific via the trash cans of the critics!

LAKE PLACID 3 Red Band trailer hits the web

A Red Band trailer has hit the web for the newest film in the LAKE PLACID series, LAKE PLACID 3! Here is the basic plot from imdb.com:

A game warden moves his family to Lake Placid, once the site of deadly crocodile attacks. Locals assure him the crocs are gone, but his mischievous young son finds a few baby crocs and begins feeding them. They quickly grow into very big adults and start attacking the game warden's family and nearby town.

Check out the trailer and let me know what you think. Looks like it could be a fun movie, although the 100% CGI Crocodiles really bother me. I have never been a fan of using CGI on creatures in films like this. I am ok with using CGI to enhance them in some way, but I don't like when the entire creature is CGI. Oh well....
