So what did you think about.....THE CHERNOBYL DIARIES ?

If you have seen THE CHERNOBYL DIARIES, leave a comment below and let everyone know what you thought.   I got a chance to see this earlier this week and I was very impressed. I thought it was a great movie overall, and was pretty suspenseful the entire time.
My only concern was the very end, which I won't discuss since some people have still not seen it, but other than that, I liked the film.    If you haven't seen it, I recommend it for sure.   THE CHERNOBYL DIARIES is in theaters nationwide now.

Here is the basic plot of the film, for those of you unfamiliar with it. This is taken from the film's imdb page:

Six tourists hire an extreme tour guide who takes them to the abandoned city Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. During their exploration, they soon discover they are not alone.

Blu-ray Review: MUTANT GIRLS SQUAD (2010)

MUTANT GIRLS SQUAD
Directed by Noboru Iguchi, Yoshihiro Nishimura, and Tak Sakaguchi
Distributed by Well Go USA Entertainment

I have said it before, and I will say it again.  I love Japanese Splatter films!!  I have loved them ever since I watched 2001's ICHI THE KILLER.   Other notable Japanese splatter films are THE MACHINE GIRL, ROBOGEISHA, and TOKYO GORE POLICE.  Well now we can add MUTANT GIRLS SQUAD to the list of classic Japanese splatter films.  Here is the basic plot synopsis from the Well Go USA website:

Rin is a seemingly normal Japanese high school girl, but on her 16th birthday, everything in her life changes when government special forces break into her home. After witnessing her mother’s face blown into bits and her father’s severed head falling into her birthday cake, Rin’s dormant mutant abilities are awakened: her arm transforms into a sharp, knife-encrusted claw, and a moment later, she finds herself standing in a pool of blood, surrounded by dead soldiers! Fleeing and fighting her way though her hometown, she encounters a group of girls who were also born as mutants, and call themselves the Hiruko. A breed of mutants who have existed long before the so-called “Japanese” invaded their homeland and began to persecute them, the girls have different special abilities: one can transform her arms into swords, one can grow tentacles from her fingertips, and one can grow a chainsaw out of her body. The team hone their skills under their demented and powerful leader, Kisaragi, for one purpose: to take revenge on the Japanese who have been persecuting their breed for ages, and to take over Japan and transform it into a land for mutants only! The revenge of the mutant girls will soon begin!

As with most all the Japanese splatter films, this film is just crazy!  Crazy in a good way of course, and this one goes way over the top!   The effects in this film are amazing and the fighting scenes are choreographed very well.  The use of color in this film is amazing and really pops out at you when viewing in HD on Blu-ray.

The plot is pretty simple, but that is not really why you watch this kind of film....it's all about the fighting and blood squirting, and there is plenty of that...along with head explosions, heads being sawed in half, dismemberments, and that's the normal stuff!!  Wait until you actually see all the different girls and their mutations including a girl with boob swords (yes, I just typed that), and a girl with a chainsaw coming out of her back end!  Oh, and did I mention the giant monster that spews acidic breast milk?  That is one you will have to see to believe.

MUTANT GIRLS SQUAD is a must have for fans of this type of film.  The DVD and Blu-ray is available now and contains special features such as Opening Day Coverage, Interviews, a Making-Of documentary, a spin-off short called "Yoshie Zero", and trailers.

Horror DVD find of the day! The ROGER CORMAN DRIVE-IN COLLECTION for only $4.99!!

I used to love the Horror section at my local Best Buy store....it was packed with great DVD's and even had some of the more obscure films that I didn't think they would have.  But over the last few years the DVD section has gotten pretty pathetic.  I very seldom even bother going in there any more to browse the horror DVD's like I used to, but I got a gift card to Best Buy for my birthday, so I went on in to see what I could find.    I have to admit, Best Buy does have  some cheap DVD's and Blu-Rays, even if the selection is pretty slim.   I was happy with my two purchases, though.  I was excited to get THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE on Blu-ray for only $9.99, but my real excitement was when I found the ROGER CORMAN DRIVE-IN COLLECTION on DVD for only $4.99!!  This 4 disc box set contains 10 of Roger Corman's early drive-in B-movies!  The movies included on this set are:

ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES
A BUCKET OF BLOOD
CREATURE FROM THE HAUNTED SEA
DEMENTIA 13
LAST WOMAN ON EARTH
THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
SHE GODS OF SHARK REEF
SWAMP WOMAN
THE TERROR
THE WASP WOMAN

If you have a Best Buy store around you, I suggest you pick up this awesome set while it is available. At $4.99, it is a bargain you shouldn't pass up!

DVD Review: THE TURNPIKE KILLER (2012)

THE TURNPIKE KILLER
Written & Directed by Evan Makrogiannis & Brian Weaver
Production Company:  New York Horror Film Productions

A couple of months ago, I let you all know about a new film coming out called THE TURNPIKE KILLER, which was being released in an awesome 80's Retro VHS Big Box that includes an uncut version of the film on VHS and the DVD with uncensored cover art.   The box also contains a poster of the film signed by one of the film's stars, Ruby LaRocca!  Click Here to see my original post about this.

Well, I got my copy in the mailbox the other day, and I was in love with this film the minute it came out of the shipping box.    I know a lot of films are starting to come out with the VHS tape, as a throwback to the best age of horror films, but this is the first one I have ever actually owned.  Seeing that big VHS box was like taking a time machine back to elementary school, and checking out the big VHS boxes on the shelves at my local video store, looking at all the awesome horror films that I was too young to rent!

Having the VHS tape of this film is a very cool collectible.  But if you don't have a VCR anymore, don't worry, as a DVD comes packaged in with the VHS tape.  Ok...enough about the glorious packaging, lets get to the actual movie, THE TURNPIKE KILLER.  For those unfamiliar with the film, here is the post courtesy of the film's official website:

Over a span of ten years the butchered remains of New York City women have been found dumped along the New Jersey Turnpike. The sadistic fiend behind these horrid murders has been coined "The Turnpike Killer". His search for the "chosen one" has left a seemingly endless trail of bloodshed and brutality. NYPD Homicide Detective Lloyd is on the job but still,"The Turnpike Killer" evades capture. Keep off the streets at night, stay out of the tunnels and avoid the bridges. You cannot escape him when all roads lead to death.

I have to admit, I really wasn't expecting too much out of this film.  I had never heard of it, and the trailer didn't show much of the actual film, which is usually not that good of a thing.  I am happy to say though, that this film far exceeded my expectations.  This is a good film....a real good film actually.   Bad acting usually can kill a movie like this, but the acting in this film was superb, especially for a low budget, independent film like this.   Actor Bill McLaughlin was terrifying as the title character, and portrayed the killer perfectly.

The actresses in this film are especially good, though, as their screams seem horrifyingly real.  In fact some scenes made me feel very uneasy, as I had to wonder if I was not watching a fictitious horror film anymore, and now watching actual footage of people being tortured and killed.  Some of the scenes just feel that real.  Very well done by the filmmakers and the actors/actresses!  In fact, watching the documentary on the making of the film eased my mind when I saw all the actresses were alive and well!  Ha!

The movie is pretty brutal, with a lot of blood and some very graphic scenes.  In fact, THE TURNPIKE killer contains one of the most realistic and brutal "throat-slashing"scenes I think has ever been put on film.   This takes place during a home invasion scene where "The Turnpike Killer" has broken in a young couples home.  This is one scene that you will not forget long after watching the film.

THE TURNPIKE KILLER is the perfect low-budget independent film.  Shot in a grainy style that looks as though you are watching a film from the 80's and packed in the coolest DVD/VHS packaging I have seen in a while, this is one you don't want to miss.

THE TURNPIKE KILLER will be released June 22nd of this year, but to pre-order THE TURNPIKE KILLER for the slashed down price of $24.99 (reduced from street price of $29.99), click the link below.

Check out the trailer for THE PACT

I got a press release the other day about a new film coming out from IFC Midnight called THE PACT.   The film was written and Directed by Nicholas McCarthy, and this appears to be his first full feature film according to his imdb page.  Here is the plot of the film from the press release:

After their mother passes away, sisters Nicole and Annie reluctantly return to their childhood home to pay their last respects. While staying overnight in the house, the sisters sense a mysterious presence in their midst: noises startling them in the night, objects moving about, a fallen picture of an unknown woman posed next to their mother. Annie begins experiencing a series of intense and disturbing dreams – visions that lead her to uncover something terrible about her mother’s past that is finally revealing itself.

I think this looks like an awesome film, and the trailer is very intense. Check out the trailer by clicking below and let me know what you think.

THE PACT will be available nationwide on IFC Midnight Cable VOD and digital outlets (SundanceNOW, iTunes, Amazon Streaming, XBOX Zune, Playstation Unlimited) on May 25th. THE PACT will be in theaters July 6, 2012.

DVD Review: THE HOUSE OF THE DEMON (2007)

-------------Review by contributing writer Scott Baker------------------

THE HOUSE OF THE DEMON
Directed by  George L. Ortiz
Distributed by Celebrity Video Distribution

I love indie films because you never know what you’re going to get with them. Some are fantastic, true testaments to the long hours and labor put into them; others are piles of crap, just cheaply made, thrown together time-wasters that make you wish you could un-watch them; and still others are in-between...they have good qualities and bad. I’m going to have to lump THE HOUSE OF THE DEMON in that third category.

If you are not familiar with THE HOUSE OF THE DEMON, here is the plot synopsis courtesy of the DVD cover:

It’s Halloween - the biggest party night of the year - and a group of college friends won’t let the university’s new ban on parties spoil their plans. Fortunately, Charlie has just inherited his recently deceased uncle’s abandoned house on the outskirts of town. What is supposed to be a night of good, clean Halloween fun becomes an outrageous nightmare of demonic possession, as each of the hapless teens discovers what’s inside THE HOUSE OF THE DEMON!

Ok...first the good.

The film is shot well and, even though it is low budget, is lit pretty well overall. There are a couple of darker scenes, but none that are really too difficult to make out. The locations are great and the house is perfect for a ‘demon-infested’ dwelling.

Also of note are the special effects. While the CG in THE HOUSE OF THE DEMON is lower quality, it actually still looks good, especially those scenes towards the end when Charlie is fighting the demon. The demon effects are pretty good, with the minor demons looking very much like Sam Raimi-type demons. And the gore...wow; the production team spared no expense making the red stuff flow! There are several good gore scenes, and one phenomenal part in particular where a group of girls rip a guy’s bowels out and eat them. It is horrifically awesome!

But now for the bad.

As expected for a low budget picture, the acting in THE HOUSE OF THE DEMON is not that great. In fact, some of it downright stinks. The dialogue comes across as pretty hokey and the story itself lacks a spark. And speaking of the story, there’s not much explained...there are key aspects that should be mentioned but never are. I found myself frowning at several points because I didn’t know what was going on and was never told.

I am going to have to give THE HOUSE OF THE DEMON a neutral recommendation. It’s a great testament to indie filmmaking for sure, but it is also lacking a bit too much for me. Still, I have to admit that I’m looking forward to what the filmmakers do next. I think they have a lot of potential.

Horror in real life: The Mississippi Highway Killer

In what sounds like something straight out of a horror movie, a person in Mississippi is pulling people over on the highway, posing as a police officer, and then shooting the people dead.  This is a from a story I saw on CNN.com last week.  The story states:

The first shooting occurred on May 8. Thomas Schlender, 74, was found dead about 1:30 a.m. in his car in the median of southbound Interstate 55 in Panola County.

On Friday, May 11, Lori Anne Carswell, 48, was found dead outside her car on the shoulder of Mississippi State Highway 713, in Tunica County, about 2:15 a.m.

Yikes!  Nothing scarier than being hurt by those that are supposed to be good and trustworthy.   This is really scary and drivers in Mississippi need to be extra careful.  In fact the story states that:

Authorities were asking citizens to be careful if they are pulled over and feel uneasy.
They advise drivers to call 911 and verify that a legitimate officer is pulling them over or drive to a well-lit, crowded place before stopping, actions permitted under Mississippi state law.

So, if you are driving through Mississippi, be extra careful, especially if you are in a remote area.  The suggestion to drive to a well lit, public place if you are being pulled over is great advice.  Don't just pull over on the side of a remote highway.

Any bets on how soon we see this story as the plot of a new horror movie?

It's a Piranha....no, it's an Anaconda...no, it's PIRANHACONDA!!!

In the tradition of SHARKTOPUS and DINOSHARK, comes a new breed (or hybrid, to be more accurate) of creature called, PIRANHACONDA!
Part piranha, part anaconda, this is one beast that is not to be messed with!!   Here is the basic plot synopsis from youtube.com:

Part fish! Part snake! All killer! In B-movie icon Roger Corman's latest, a hybrid creature - half piranha and half anaconda - attacks a movie crew on location near her nest when her egg is stolen.

Not that you really need any plot....lets admit it, all we care about is seeing the title creature make snacks out of all the humans!  This is another SyFy original, yet this one has some pretty major star power with Michael Madsen and Rachel Hunter.  PIRANHACONADA airs June 16th on the SyFy Channel.

DVD Review: SATAN HATES YOU (2010)

SATAN HATES YOU
Written & Directed by: James Felix McKenney
Distributed by TLA Releasing

So according to the film title, apparently Satan hates me.  Well, that's good, 'cause I hate him too!  He makes us do bad things.  He especially makes the character of Marc do bad things in this film, including beating a girls head in with a commode tank lid!!  Whoa, I guess I should slow down here and tell you a little bit about what this film is about.  Here is a brief description of the film from the movie's official website:

Inspired by films from the golden age of religious cinema such as A THIEF IN THE NIGHT (1972), IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? (1971) and STALKED (1969), SATAN HATES YOU is a graphic horror film that tells the stories of two individuals and their personal struggles with Lucifer himself.
We follow Marc (Don Wood) a homicidal maniac driven by demons buried deep within his soul, and Wendy (Christine Spencer) Marc's polar opposite who lives life fast and hard without a second's thought to the consequences. Their separate paths will eventually cross, but will it be on the road to salvation or the highway to hell?

SATAN HATES YOU is a very strange film to put it mildly.  One thing I was glad about is that is was not as offensive as I thought it might have been from a  religious aspect.  There was one scene that was  a tad bit sacrilegious, but it was a very short scene in a dream sequence and didn't last long at all.  Other than that, it was not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be.

The movie is pretty graphic in it's violence.  In addition to the poor treatment of the woman described in the opening paragraph of this review, the character of Marc also doesn't take lightly that a  man mistakes him for being gay, and shows his displeasure by ramming a 2x4 down the mouth of a guy, nearly ripping his face in half!

The acting in this film is remarkably good for a low budget indie feature like this.  I didn't recognize the Marc, played by Don Wood, or the actress that played Wendy, Christine Spencer, but these two give wonderful performances in my opinion and were perfectly cast for these roles.  It was also fun to see some genre vets in the film, like Angus Scrimm, Reggie Bannister, Debbie Rochon, and Michael Berryman, even if their parts in the film were pretty small.

While this film will not be for everybody, I enjoyed it and would recommend it.  The DVD is available now from TLA Video and contains the following Special Features:

*  Behind-the-Scenes of Satan Hates You
*  Theatrical Trailer
Creepy Christmas short film
*  13 TV segments from the film featuring Angus Scrimm, Pauley Perrette, and auther Max Brooks

How did I miss this zombie film? It's THE DEAD UNDEAD: VAMPIRES VS. ZOMBIES

I thought I knew about most all zombie films, but somehow I missed this one.  A friend of mine at work said he saw a movie in a redbox called THE DEAD UNDEAD:  VAMPIRES VS. ZOMBIES.  First off, with name like that, how did I not know about this film!
It looks like it was originally just titled THE DEAD UNDEAD, but I guess it is now being marketed with the VAMPIRES VS. ZOMBIES tag added to it.
Here is the basic plot of the film from imdb.com:

A group of peaceful Vampires are infected and turned into crazed zombie like creatures whose only motivation is to feed on flesh, whether Human or Vampire. A group of Vampire commandos tries to keep their identity secret, while trying to stop the spread of the infection. Soldiers from across the ages, it's up to these vampires to end the zombie infection. Caught in the middle is a group of human kids on a camping trip, who team up with the Vampires in an attempt to survive.

THE DEAD UNDEAD looks very low budget, I was actually surprised to see that it had a budget of a little over 1 Million dollars according to imdb.com.   The film looks to be shot well, though, with some pretty cool camera work, and I think the story is a pretty cool premise.  Check out the trailer below and let me know what you think.  If you have seen this film, please comment here and let us know if it is worth checking out.

Blu-ray Review: YAKUZA WEAPON (2011)

YAKUZA WEAPON
Directed by: Tak Sakaguchi & Yûdai Yamaguchi
Distributed by:  Well Go USA

Well Go USA is putting out some of the best foreign films here in the U.S.    YAKUZA WEAPON is one they put out earlier in the year, but I just had a chance to watch last night.   I wished I would have watched it sooner.   I haven't enjoyed a film like YAKUZA WEAPON in a long time!   For those unfamiliar with the film, here is the full plot synopsis from the Well Go USA website:

The team who brought you VERSUS have returned with another hard-edged battle royale featuring tough gangsters, deadly women and cybernetic penis implants! Ex-yakuza Shozo Iwaki (Tak Sakaguchi) engages in a titanic battle of revenge against double-crossing Kurawaki, the man who killed his father. After a building-leveling skirmish, Shozo wakes up with an M61 Vulcan cannon in place of his right arm, and a rocket launcher where his left leg used to be. Shozo quickly learns to love his weaponized frame, and prepares for a bloody rematch with Kurawaki, who has some mechanical improvements of his own.
Co-directed by Yudai Yamaguchi and Tak Sakaguchi, creators of action-filled comedies like BATTLEFIELD BASEBALL, CROMARTIE HIGH SCHOOL and BE A MAN! SAMURAI SCHOOL, and based on an adult comic by Ken Ishikawa, (CUTIE HONEY, GETTERROBOT and more), YAKUZA WEAPON combines hard-boiled gangster action, manga-style comedy and splatterific special effects. Tough as nails, armed to the teeth, pissed-off and looking for a fight, YAKUZA WEAPON is coming to kick your ass!

Ok, let me start of saying on thing.  If you are a fan of Japanese cinema like TOKYO GORE POLICE, MUTANT GIRLS SQUAD, HELLDRIVER, etc., then you should absolutely love this film.  If you are not familiar with those types of films, YAKUZA WEAPON could be seen a very "dumb" movie.  You see, you have to set reality aside when you watch these films.  They are pretty realistic for the most part, but then there will be a crazy scene that just makes no sense.   It's part of the novelty of these types of films, and a part I thoroughly enjoy.

Director Tak Sakaguchi plays the title role of the Yakuza Weapon named Shozo, and does a tremendous job.  He is cool and hell and can fight with the best of them.   The fight scenes in this film are incredible and in fact, there is one fight scene that I consider one of the finest ever recorded on film.   In this scene, Shozo is walking through a building, and down hallways, and up stairs trying to get to Kurawaki, all along he is having to fight Kurawaki's henchmen off, and just when you think he has defeated them all, their are more around the corner...they just keep coming.  The camera work during this extended fight scene is incredible.

While more action/fighting than horror, there are plenty of horror elements all throughout the film, including a good bit of gore, including a man getting holes screwed through his face thanks to Shozo having shoes that have drill bits that come out of the bottom.  I told you those Japanese make some crazy movies!  And I haven't even mentioned the penis replacement nuclear bomb detonator!  You will just have to see that one for yourself!

YAKUZA WEAPON is available now on DVD and a DVD/Blu-ray combo pack. Both include the following special features:

*  "The Making-of Yakuza Weapon" Featurette
*  Tokyo Stage Greeting
*  Director's Discussion
*  Spinoff Film "Takuzo Weapon"

THE TAINT, full movie streaming FREE for a limited time!!

Almost a year ago, I reviewed a crazy film called, THE TAINT.  You can read that review here.   Here is the plot of the film for those unfamiliar with it:

The water is tainted. The Taint poisons the minds of men. It turns them into raging misogynists: monsters who want nothing more than to crush women's heads with rocks (or other objects). When society is transformed into a land of sadistic violence and horrible brutality, it is up to Phil O'Ginny and his hot friend, Misandra, to combat the horrible evil that is The Taint. Can they survive a world brimming with castration and endless head crushing?!

If that sounds crazy, wait until you actually see the movie.  An instant cult classic in the making!  Don't believe me, then watch the movie and see for yourself for FREE!!   That's right....THE TAINT is streaming FREE for a limited time.  I'm not sure how long the filmmakers are going to keep the free screening going, so go watch it asap!   Then, visit the website and buy your own DVD or VHS copy of the movie!

DOCUMENTING THE GREY MAN...a welcome addition to the found footage sub-genre, or a cheap knockoff of the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY films?

You really can't have a found footage movie about ghosts in a house without drawing some sort of comparison to the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY films...they pretty much set the standard for found footage films and remain the best of that sub-genre in my opinion.

DOCUMENTING THE GREY MAN is the newest found footage film coming to DVD on July 17th.  Here is the plot synopsis from the official press release:

On Monday, September 10 2007, police officers were called to investigate possible multiple homicides at a historic Pawley’s Island, SC home. Investigators arrived to find what looked like documentary film equipment. Five members of a ghost-hunting expedition were also missing.
“Extremely effective” with moments of “sheer horror”(ain’t it cool news), Documenting the Grey Man is a hair-raising paranormal found-footage investigation by a group of avaricious actors determined to exploit a family claiming to be haunted by a ghost.
What they encounter will terrify you.

Click the link to watch the trailer below and let me know what you think....will it be as good as the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY films?

DVD Review: SEX HELL: TRUE STORY OF A WOMAN IN JAIL (1975)

SEX HELL:  TRUE STORY OF A WOMAN IN JAIL
Directed by Kôyû Ohara
Distributed by  Impulse Pictures

I am a big fan of the exploitation genre, and the women-in-prison (wip) sub genre has always been a personal favorite of mine.  I have seen most all the common American wip flicks, and the more common Spanish films, but I don't believe I have ever seen a Japanese wip flick.  The filmmakers did a great job with this film and made a movie that is right up there with the more commonly known wip flicks.  For those like me who were not familiar with this film, here is the basic plot synopsis from the Impulse Pictures website:

A group of young women is thrown into a horrible juvenile hall, due to their illegal acts. They soon wish they were back on the outside, as a gang of inmates subjects this “fresh meat” to the horrors of being locked up. Mayumi, a new inmate with a mysterious past, stands up for herself and fights back! NO ONE is going to push her around, and she hatches an escape plan to seek revenge on the person who had her incarcerated.

This film has everything you would expect from a typical wip film, including plenty of cat fights among the inmates and the typical female prison shower scenes.  This film in particular, though, contains some much gorier and disturbing violence than other wip flicks I have seen.  Japanese movie makers always seem to outdo their American counterparts when it comes to these types of movies and other horror films, which is why I am such a big fan of Japanese cinema.

The film is shot very well and the DVD quality looks amazing considering this is a film from 1975.
SEX HELL is available now on DVD and includes newly translated removable English subtitles and liner notes from from Japanese film scholar Jasper Sharp.  I would highly suggest this film for anyone that likes wip films.
