Blu-ray Review: CLASS OF NUKE 'EM HIGH 2: SUBHUMANOID MELTDOWN

https://www.tromashop.com/class-of-nuke-em-high-2-blu-rayCLASS OF NUKE 'EM HIGH 2
Directed by
Distributed by Troma Entertainment

  If you are familiar with Troma Entertainment, then you know what you are getting when you put in a film called CLASS OF NUKE 'EM HIGH 2:  SUBHUMANOID MELTDOWN.   You are a getting a film that is just plain crazy, and that's what we like about Troma films, right?  Here is the basic plot of the film courtesy of the Troma website:

  First there was the super successful theatrical smash hit CLASS OF NUKE 'EM HIGH...now comes the hyper-riotous, big budget sequel: CLASS OF NUKE 'EM HIGH PART II: SUBHUMANOID MELTDOWN! The lovable cretins from Tromaville high school have graduated Summa Cum Weirdly, and the once peaceful Tromaville Institute of Technology is awash in a wave of violence and corporate greed. Meltdowns, massacres, and mutations abound on campus where humongous giant squirrels and obnoxious talking belly buttons are the least of your problems! Gloriously restored in all its anarchic glory, it's CLASS OF NUKE 'EM HIGH PART II: SUBHUMANOID MELTDOWN like you've never seen it before!

 Now I must admit, I have never seen the original CLASS OF NUKE 'EM HIGH, but I really don't think you have to have seen that one to enjoy this one.  In fact, the film give you a recap of what happened in the first on at the beginning, so you should be good to go.  Not that you really need to keep up with any sort of plot though, this just isn't that type of movie!   The plot is very unimportant to this film, as the focus here is more on all the crazy stuff going on around the college/nuclear power plant.   There are crazy experiemnts on the students, a gang called the Squirrels that terrorize the students, and worst of all, an actual giant radioactive squirrel that tears the place apart!

  There is no denying this is a Troma film.  It has everything you'd expect from a Troma film including crude humor, bad special effects  (some so bad, it's good though), bad acting and gratuitous nudity.   If you are a fan of the Toxic Avenger films, you will love this one.

CLASS OF NUKE 'EM HIGH 2:  SUBHUMANOID MELTDOWN is available now on Blu-ray and contains the following special features:

*  HD transfer of the movie from original materials
*  Audio commentary
*  Music Video trailer
*  Interview with Troma star Lisa Gaye
*  Nuke 'Em High Saga trailers including Return to Nuke 'Em High: Vol. 1 & 2

DVD Review: CONDEMNED (2015)

http://www.us.rljentertainment.com/product/condemned/c0466d4c-c78a-e411-8677-b8ac6f114281CONDEMNED
Directed by
Distributed by RLJ Entertainment

 I watched a movie the other night that I had never heard of before.  I knew nothing about it and had seen no reviews/comments on it in any of my online browsing.  The film is called CONDEMNED and I have a felling the more people start seeing this movie, the more you will begin to hear about it.  Here is the plot synopsis from the RLJ Entertainment website:

  Fed up with her parents’ bickering, poor-little-rich-girl Maya (Dylan Penn) moves in with her boyfriend, who is squatting in an old condemned building on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. With neighbors that are meth heads, junkies and degenerates, this depraved hell hole is even more toxic than it appears: After a virus born from their combined noxious waste and garbage infects the building’s residents, one by one, they succumb to a terrifying pathogen that turns them into bloodthirsty, rampaging killers and transforms their building into a savage slaughterhouse.

  The film is in the same vein as the REC and QUARANTINE films.  It's a claustrophobic nightmare of disease and filth.   While obviously a lower budget film than the ones just mentioned, CONDEMNED managed to entertain me just as much as those bigger budget films did.   While not exactly a zombie film, it has that feel to it as a people get sick and turn into flesh eating creatures.

  One thing that really stuck out was the use of practical effects in this movie.  In fact, I don't remember seeing any CG at all, but if it was used it was mixed in with the practical effects so well that I didn't notice them.  Practical effects are very rare these days, and they just look so much better overall.  I always appreciate when a movie goes that route over the cheaper, yet inferior, CG effects.

  CONDEMNED kept me entertained the entire running time.  The film was shot well and the acting was great with all involved.  I highly recommend this film to all my horror loving fans.  CONDEMNED is available now on DVD and Blu-ray from RLJ Entertainment and contains the following special features:

*  Cast Interviews and Script Readings
*  Watch in "42nd Street Mode" with a live audience commentary
*  TV's "Entertainment Tonight Canada" On-Set Interview with Dylan Penn

Blu-ray Review: 1990: THE BRONX WARRIORS (1982)

http://www.blue-underground.com/product.php?product=2571990:  THE BRONX WARRIORS
Directed by
Distributed by  Blue Underground

 Blue Underground has had some amazing DVD/Blu-ray releases lately, and continue to show why they are one of the best film companies out there with the release of 1990:  THE BRONX WARRIORS.  This is is another cult classic I had heard of before, but I had never seen before.  Here is the plot of the film courtesy of the Blue Underground website:

  It's 1990 and the Bronx has officially been declared a "No Man's Land." The authorities have given up all attempts to restore law and order. When a beautiful young woman runs away from Manhattan into this wasteland of motorcycle gangs and marauding warriors, her corrupt father sends a ruthless mercenary to bring her back at all costs. But gang leader Trash has other plans, uniting the rival outlaws to wage an all-out guerilla war against their corporate oppressors.
  Co-written and directed by Enzo G. Castellari (THE INGLORIOUS BASTARDS), this action-packed post-apocalyptic cult classic is a delirious mix of elements from THE WARRIORS and ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. Starring Vic Morrow (TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE), Christopher Connelly (MANHATTAN BABY), Fred Williamson (VIGILANTE), and Mark Gregory (ESCAPE FROM THE BRONX), 1990: THE BRONX WARRIORS has been newly transferred in High Definition and includes exclusive new Extras created especially for this release!

  While not a horror film, it is still a great grindhouse type of exploitation flick, so that's good enough for me to cover it!  As I mentioned, I had never seen this film before, but I immediately fell in love with this one and it will definitely get some repeat viewings from me in the near future.   The first thing I noticed was the remarkable HD transfer.  This looked like a film that was shot just recently with the crystal clear picture it had.    As for the film itself, it was action packed and entertaining all the way through.  There were no real dry or slow sections here...it was paced very well and kept the thoroughly entertained the entire running time.  The film reminded me a lot of THE WARRIORS with all the different gangs making up this new post-apocalyptic Bronx, so if you are a fan of that film, I am sure you will love this one as well.

  1990:  THE BRONX WARRIORS is available now from Blue Underground and contains the following special features:

*  Audio Commentary with Co-Writer/Director Enzo G. Castellari
*  Enzo G. Castellari and Fabrizio De Angelis In Conversation Part 1
*  Sourcing The Weaponry - Enzo G. Castellari visits the Italian Weapons Rental House of Paolo Ricci
*  Adventures In The Bronx - Interview with Actor/Stuntman Massimo Vanni

Blu-ray Review: LA GRANDE BOUFFE (1973)

http://mvdb2b.com/s/LaGrandeBouffeBlurayDVD/AV017LA GRANDE BOUFFE
Written & Directed by
Distributed by Arrow Video / MVD Entertainment Group

  I've seen some weird, messed up movies in my life, and now here's a new one I can add to that list.  The film is a French/Italian film titled, LA GRANDE BOUFFE, which translates to "The Big Feast".  Here is the main plot of the film courtesy of the MVD website:

  The most famous film by Italian provocateur Marco Ferreri (Dillinger is Dead), La Grande bouffe was reviled on release for its perversity, decadence and attack on the bourgeoisie yet won the prestigious FIPRESCI prize after its controversial screening at the Cannes Film Festival. Four friends, played by international superstars Marcello Mastroianni (Fellini's 8½), Michel Piccoli (Belle de jour), Ugo Tognazzi (Barbarella) and Philippe Noiret (Zazie dans le métro) retreat to a country mansion where they determine to eat themselves to death whilst engaging in group sex with prostitutes and a local school teacher (Andréa Ferréol, The Tin Drum), who seems to be up for anything... At once jovial and sinister, the film's jet-black humour has a further twist as the reputed actors (whose characters use their own names) buck their respectable trend for a descent into fart-filled chaos that delivers a feast for the eyes and mind.

  Now I must point out that this is not a horror movie in any sense of the word.  I guess you could call it an exploitation film of a sort, so for that reason I'll cover it!  I honestly don't know what genre you would put this into.  If I had to choose, I guess I would say a dark comedy...an extremely dark comedy!  The fact that the four men would choose to kill themselves by eating themselves to death is pretty disturbing, which fits perfectly for this film.  You will witness all kinds of crass and disturbing behavior in this film, as the four men not only gorge themselves on food during their final weekend, they also gorge themselves on drink and sex.  You will see all of their degenerative behavior on film and at some points it does get a little long winded.  The film clocks in at 130 minutes, and I think the actual plot would only need about half of that time.  The other half is just witnessing countless acts of over indulgence in women and food, but that's what is really the heart of this film.

  Disturbing on many levels, LA GRANDE BOUFFE is a film you will remember long after you watch it.  It's tough to sit through at times, but watch it all the way through and I think you will see why this film has become such a cult classic over the years.

  LA GRANDE BOUFFE is available now from Arrow Video and MVD Distribution and contains the following special features:

*  Brand new 2K restoration of the original camera negative
*  High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentation
*  Original French audio (uncompressed PCM on the Blu-ray)
*  Newly translated English subtitles
*  The Farcical Movie - A French television profile of Marco Ferreri from 1975 in which the director discusses, among other things, the influence of Tex Avery, Luis Buñuel and Tod Browning's Freaks
*  Behind-the-scenes footage of the making of La Grande bouffe, containing interviews with Ferrari and actors Marcello Mastroianni, Michel Piccoli, Ugo Tognazzi and Philippe Noiret
*  Extracts from the television series Couleurs autour d'un festival featuring interviews with the cast and crew recorded during the Cannes Film Festival
*  A visual essay on the film with by Italian film scholar Pasquale Iannone
*  Select scene audio commentary by Iannone
*  News report from the Cannes Film Festival where La Grande bouffe caused a controversial stir, including Ferreri at the press conference
