I just got a press release for the film HOUSE HUNTING, and I jut had to share it. I knew nothing about this film before reading the press release, but it looks like it is going to be a very fun film. It is a haunted house flick, which I love. Here is the basic plot courtesy of Phase 4 Films:

Two families attend an open house in the hopes of finding their dream home. Upon entering, their dream quickly becomes a hellish nightmare when they realize that every attempt to leave takes them right back to the front door. Stuck in this purgatory, the two families are haunted by the deserted home’s former owner with the declaration that only one of the two families will be able to call this house their home.

Phase 4 Films has released some wonderful genre films lately, and it looks like this will be another great one to add to the list! The film is directed by Eric Hurt, and is being released on Video On Demand by Phase 4 Films. In fact, the film is available now on Comcast, Cox, Insight and Cable Vision! Check out this film asap! Let me know what you think of it once you see it!

DVD Review: THE SUMMER OF MASSACRE (2011)

I know most of you have seen tons of slasher films, but can you say you have seen the movie that holds the Guinness Book Of World Records for the highest body count in a single film? That record is 155 kills ant the movie is called THE SUMMMER OF MASSACRE. I am proud to say that I have now seen this record holding film. Here is the basic plot of the film from the breaking glass pictures website:

Director-Writer, Joe Castro (Terror Toons 1&2, The Jackhammer Massacre) introduces another original tale -- the first anthology slasher film which presents eight killers in 5 gorefest tales. There’s nothing like the sweltering heat of summer to set off a massacre. The Summer of Massacre is a 100 mph slasher ride that never slows down. Packed with enough gore and insanity to send you looking for your barf bag.

Well, they are right about the gore. It is non stop Never does the film go for over a minute before you see the splattering of the red stuff.   The film is set up as an anthology which I always enjoy. Most all the films are nothing but killing, except for the segment titled 'Lump' which actually does have a good plot and a clever twist at the end.   'Lump' is about a mentally challenged girl (with a lump on her face) who here beautiful sister can't stand. The sister takes "lump" hiking with her and her friends and basically shoves her wheelchair over a cliff.  The girl survives the fall and then seeks revenge on her sister and her sisters friends.

With a 155 kills in this film, you think this would be the greatest slasher film of all time. Unfortunately, there is one big problem. All of the kills are done with CG. ALL OF THEM. And it is not good CG either. In fact, it's not even bad CG. It is horrible CG.   While some of the kills are cool and look good, the majority of them look so fact they are almost funny.   Take for instance a man killed by having a TV remote shoved in his mouth which somehow warrants the CG blood to fly! And dont' get me started on the guy killed by having a bag of ice held over his face for about 5 seconds which causes his head to turn gray as if he were frozen to death. Really?

Ok, sorry, you know I hate CG effects in horror films.   But even some CG effects are necessary and are ok, but there is no excuse for the horrible CG effects found here.    Despite the GG, I still enjoyed this film, but I can't think about how good this film could have been if they would have cut the kills in half and spent more time and/or money on practical effects, or even some better CG effects.   This is definitely a case of the film maker's choosing quantity over quality.

I just received a press release for an upcoming movie with quite possibly the best name ever..ACID HEAD: THE BUZZARD NUTS COUNTY SLAUGHTER! I get a lot of press releases to go through, but this one definitely caught my eye. I don't know much about this film, but with a name like that, it's gotta be good! At least I hope so. Here is the basic plot of the film from imdb.com, which sounds just as intriguing:

Acid scarred teenager : Pheromone Labonza (aka Acid Head) is a bullied, tortured and physically scarred teen-aged former college student; turned vengeful student killer & goth-girl fugitive, that had vanished for a year. One year later, guess who's back to the scene of the crime? Pheromone is now the fabled Acid Head murderess. Witness Acid Head's bloody, lustful vengeance, as she slashes her way though rural Buzzard Nuts County, N.Y.'s lonely roadsides and the sin-soaked Vom College sorority House (which also serves as an underground whorehouse, built on the grave-site of a nefarious top-hatted, evil, demonic force named: Count Dracula, no less).

I don't know much about this film, but from the title and the sound of that plot, this is one I will definitely be checking out once it is available.

The press release states that the film will be available as a VOD and DVD release in spring 2012 on Amazon, Indieflix, MoviesInsanity.com and TonyWatt.com.

DVD Review: THE PUPPET MONSTER MASSACRE (2010)

THE PUPPET MONSTER MASSACRE

There are few movies nowadays that can truly boast about being original. But I gotta tell you: THE PUPPET MONSTER MASSACRE is definitely one that can claim it. This film, while not the best I’ve seen this year, is probably the most unique.

If you are not familiar with THE PUPPET MONSTER MASSACRE, here is the plot synopsis courtesy of MVD:

A group of teens are challenged to spend a night in the Wagner mansion on the edge of town. Little do they know the owner (Dr. Wolfgang Wagner) has concocted a monstrosity in the basement and plans to make the hapless teens the creature's first big meal. This is The Puppet Monster Massacre, a wild and raucous love letter to the monster films of the glorious 1980's! Heads will roll and felt will fly in this visually rich splatter-fest. Thrill as an army of over 400 soldiers is helpless against a monstrous menace, Chill as a man collapses from the aroma of a thousand bunny farts, Shriek as puppets make sweet monkey love in a spooky graveyard! This is the low budget film you have been waiting for!

First off: this movie is A LOT of fun. I don’t care who you are or what genre you normally watch, THE PUPPET MONSTER MASSACRE will put a smile on your face regardless. It is witty and wildly entertaining, a felt-filled fright-fest of fun!

Yes, folks, this is a puppet horror movie. There are no live-action scenes, no human actors, but lots of scares and gore. Yup, that’s right: gore. Heck, there’s even a couple of scenes of puppet nudity. If that’s your thing, then your in for a treat.

I have to hand it to the production crew: the blood and gore in this flick is superb. There’s plenty of it, too. But, I have to admit...it’s hard to take it seriously whenever the image preceding the gore is a puppet. Still, you have to admire filmmakers who are willing to slaughter puppets in the name of entertainment!

The story works well for this film, and could actually work well in a live-action movie: Dr. Wagner is an ex-Nazi who has created a monster to wreak havoc upon his enemies. Which leaves the quirky (and unknowing) hero to save the day...even if he is scared lintless. The film clocks in at 70 minutes, which means the plot moves quickly.

Even so, I would dare to venture that 70 minutes might be a tad too long for this type of film. The novelty of the puppetry wanes after the first 45 minutes or so. THE PUPPET MONSTER MASSACRE could have easily been just as good by running for 50 minutes instead.

Still, you can’t help but like this film. I really it overall and am recommending it to anyone that enjoys over-the-top fun. The DVD is available now from MVD Entertainment group.

THE WOMAN was on my list of DVD's being released this week. Hopefully you watched the trailer for it...but I am posting it here for those that didn't click on it to watch the trailer. This looks like a really messed up film, so naturally I can't wait to see it! Here is the basic plot from the film's official website:

Family man and lawyer Christoper Cleek (Sean Bridgers) must do what he can to protect his family when he comes into contact with a feral woman (Pollyana McIntosh) living in the woods near his isolated country home. Through a series of harrowing encounters Cleek and his family quickly discover there is more to this woman than anyone would suspect and that sometimes the devil wears a handsome face.

Blu-ray Review: LIPS OF BLOOD (1975)

This week, Redemption Films and Kino Lorber Inc have released a collection of films called, The Cinema Of Jean Rollin. Most of the films have been on DVD before, but I believe this is their first release on the Blu-ray format. There are 5 films in this collection, and I will be reviewing them all, but up first is the 1975 film, LIPS OF BLOOD.   For those unfamiliar with this film, here is the basic plot of the film from imbd.com:

This erotic vampire film features a young man on a strange quest after recognizing a castle on a poster. He seems to remember the castle from his childhood and eventually finds it with the aid of a strange woman dressed in white. It turns out that his family has been keeping the secret of vampirism from him.

For those unfamiliar with Jean Rollin, he is a French director that is most known for his female vampire flicks. His films are the epitome of classic, Euro-horror sexploitation.  While tamer in that realm than some of his other films, he still does not disappoint with LIPS OF BLOOD.

I thoroughly enjoyed LIPS OF BLOOD, but I do have to admit that it can be slow in a few parts. The film clocks in at 87 minutes, but it actually felt much longer to me.   Don't think that means I didn't like the film, that is just a warning to those expecting non-stop vampire action. Rollin's films are very artistic and visual.   The dialog is not the strong part of the film here, Rollins focuses on his visual style. The film is shot beautifully with wonderful cinematography and some very moody images.   There are some great camera shots and angles which are very aesthetically pleasing. The acting is good overall, although made in 1975, expect some very outdated hairdos and clothing.

I have not seen many of Rollin's films, but will be watching all 5 films of the "Cinema of Jean Rollin" collection. I look forward to seeing his other films, and will be reviewing them all here, so stay tuned!

Wait a minute...did I just use the terms "awesome" and "Uwe Boll film" in the same sentence? Well, there is a first time for everything! Actually, I realize why ZOMBIE MASSACRE actually looks good, Uwe Boll is listed as the producer, he did not write or direct the film. Ok, that explains things!
Anyway, this looks very cool. The trailer is very stylistic and contains some very cool imagery. Here is the basic plot of ZOMBIE MASSACRE from the film's official website:

A bacteriological weapon – developed by the US Government to create a super soldier – spreads an epidemic in a quiet little town in the middle of Eastern Europe. All citiziens have been turned into infected zombies. The plan is: to bring an atomic bomb into the nuclear plant of the city to pretend a terrible accident. No one has to know the truth. A commando of mercenaries is hired to do the mission. The battle is on. Hordes of monsters against a bunch of men.
Who will survive?

Panik House Entertainment has put out an excellent release with the WOMEN IN PRISON TRIPLE FEATURE. This DVD includes 3 classic sexploitation films, all dealing with...well, women in prison!
The DVD includes CHAINED HEAT, RED HEAT, and JUNGLE WARRIORS. Here are the plots of these films from the Synapse Films/Panik House Entertainment website:

CHAINED HEAT
Linda Blair (The Exorcist) stars as Carol Henderson, a woman sentenced to 18 months in federal prison after accidentally killing a man. With the perverted warden (John Vernon, Animal House) seducing the inmates and two rival gangs fighting a race war, Carol struggles to survive her remaining days in the sleazy slammer. In an effort to escape, the girls grab some firepower, take revenge, and try to shoot their way to freedom! Stars Sybil Danning and John Vernon. Presented in Anamorphic Widescreen.

So far, I have only watched the first film of the three, CHAINED HEAT. I have always heard about this film but had never seen it until this release.   The film is exactly what you expect from this type of movie. It is a reminder of the great grindhouse days of the 70's and 80's. All three of these films are from the mid 80's and boy does it show!   This adds to the nostalgia of the film, though. Big hair and bad music reminds us just how crazy the 80's really were!
The acting in CHAINED HEAT is actually pretty good for this type of film. The film is full of action, there are really no slow parts in it at all which is good. Another good thing is this film actually has a pretty good story to it.  A lot of these types of films don't have much of a story and were obviously just made to capitalize on the female nudity, but this film wasn't made just for that...although there is plenty of that as well!   Also, there is some pretty graphic violence in this film, particularly a cringe worthy scene were a prisoner is hooked in the neck in a bathroom stall. They don't call it the pokey for nothing!!

Fans of this subgenre of exploitation film should not pass up this great DVD set. 3 Great movies for the price of one!   The DVD is out now from Panik House Entertainment/Synapse Films.

Stunning news in the WEST MEMPHIS 3 case!! The real killer has confessed...?

I have been following the case of the WEST MEMPHIS 3 for years. If you are unfamiliar with the case, it was a murder case in West Memphis, Arkansas back in 1993. 3 young boys were killed, and although they had no evidence, the state convicted Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley Jr., and Jason Baldwin (known now as the West Memphis 3) of the murders, mainly because they were known as 'hoods', because they listened to heavy metal music and work black clothes. The police coerced Jessie Misskelley Jr. into a confession and they convicted all three kids based on that. The police didn't care that Jessie was a mentally challenged young man and couldn't comprehend what all he was saying. His confession was full of inaccuracies about the case, but the state didn't care. They convicted these kids and locked them up for over 17 years until they were freed last year after agreeing to enter an Alford plea.

There are a number of people coming forward now saying that one of the murdered boys stepfather, Terry Hobbs, has admitted on several occasions that he killed the 3 boys. You can read all the confession accounts in the full article from NWAHomepage.com. Here is an excerpt from that article:

A third witness stated that he was at Michael Hobbs Jr's home in 2003 or 2004 when he was told by Hobbs Jr. that the two of them could not go down to the basement to play pool because Michael Hobbs Sr. was down there having a conversation with Hobbs Jr.'s uncle. The witness said that he " listened with Michael Jr. at the top of the stairs. I heard two men talking. One appeared to be very upset even crying and he said 'I am sorry, I regret it.' The other man was trying to console him and said, 'You are in the clear, no one thinks you are a suspect, those guys are already in prison.'"

It is excellent that is is finally coming to light, maybe the West Memphis 3 will finally have their names 100% cleared. I hate that has taken this long for people to come forward about this, though. If these people knew that Hobbs did it, or heard him confess, whey are they just now coming out with this info. This should have been done years ago instead of letting the state wrongfully convict 3 young men.

Hopefully the truth will be told soon.....

DVD Review: LITTLE DEATHS (2011)

I had no clue what to expect from LITTLE DEATHS. The cover looked cool, and the pics on the back were very intriguing, but you never know what you are going to get with a lot of films. I had never even heard of this film, so I had no clue what to expect. Sometimes the pictures on the cover make a film look better than it is. I am glad to say for this film, that is not the case. In fact, the few pictures you see on the back don't do it justice. Before I go on, here is the basic plot courtesy of Image Entertainment:

Well-to-do home owners Richard and Victoria pose as religious do-gooders and lure homeless girls to their luxurious home. Apartment dwellers Claire and Pete invigorate their love life with a role-playing game with increasingly hazy boundaries. Jen and Frank, once prostitute and pimp, are now trying to make a go of things as an exclusive couple. Jen’s even in therapy with a psychiatrist, who is secretly working with her husband Frank. Each couple is in for a surprise. Richard and Victoria will have the tables turned on them by one of their lady victims; Claire will finally push Pete too far in their sexual game; and Jen and Frank can’t begin to imagine what their conspiring psychiatrist is up to. Little Deaths are little games that sometimes lead to the big one.

This film is very well made and the acting is wonderful. I can't think of a bad performance in any of the 3 parts to this anthology. The first story, 'House and Home', was my favorite by far. This story had the most gore, and was the scariest of the 3 to me. In this one a couple brings home homeless women, promising them a hot bath and hot meal, but only lure them there to play sick and twisted sexual games with them, against their will. Their latest victim, a homeless woman named Sorrow, is not as helpless as they might think and she puts an end to their little games. I won't say how she does this, but it came as a complete shock to me and was very scary.

The second story called, 'Mutant Tool', was just messed up. It is a crazy story about a mutant that a scientist is harvesting semen from, because it has psychedelic effects when used as a drug. Yes, you read that right, and I could not have made that up if I wanted to. Full of weird and creepy visuals, this story is unfortunately the weakest of the three in my opinion. Sci-fi fans might enjoy this segment the best.

Finally, 'Bitch'is the story of a woman with an intense phobia of dogs. She is in a very destructive relationship with a man she makes dress up as a dog in order to control him. I guess this gives her a sense of empowerment that she has control over this "dog". She is very controlling and demanding and eventually her boyfriend has had enough and gets back at her the best way he knows how. I can't even describe what he does to her.....you will have to see this one to believe it.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed LITTLE DEATHS. I liked it much better than I thought I would and would recommend it to anyone who is fan of extreme cinema, as there are quite a few very disturbing scenes.

DVD Review: SWEET KARMA (2009)

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a good female-revenge flick, so I was pretty happy when Hayes handed me SWEET KARMA to review. The cover is very inviting, after all, with a woman in bra and panties holding a handgun; I mean, how can you not be curious?

If you are not familiar with SWEET KARMA, here is the plot synopsis courtesy of Phase 4 FIlms:

Karma Balint is a shy, mute Russian girl whose sister Anna left for Canada with bright hopes of making some money for the two of them. When Karma discovers that Anna’s body has been found in the woods, the apparent victim of a Russian mafia hit, Karma sets off to infiltrate the criminal underworld to avenge her sister. Her journey takes her through the twisted underbelly of society leaving behind death and mayhem in her wake.

I loved this movie. It has a gritty, underworld feel to it and is full of dark themes and overtones. You truly feel for Karma as she searches for her sister’s killers...and you relish the vengeance that she doles out. And, boy, does she dole it out!

SWEET KARMA is a vicious film with some excellent ‘revenge’ scenes. The seductive yet fatal ways that Karma gets rid of the killers is almost entrancing to watch; you literally have a hard time pulling your eyes away from the screen! For example, Karma leads one of the men into a restroom where she starts kissing him. Thinking that Karma is an easy dancer, the man lets his guard down...and pays a horrific price for it. Karma tricks him into thinking he’s snorting cocaine off of her breast, but it’s actually laundry detergent. While the guy is floundering around in some massive pain, she knocks him down and then ‘hangs’ him on the hand-rail!

The acting in SWEET KARMA is very good, with actress Shera Bechard doing a superb job in the titular role of Karma. Portraying a shy, mute beauty from Russia is not an easy task, I’m sure, but Bechard pulls it off with ease. I look forward to seeing her in future films.

SWEET KARMA doesn’t have many special effects, except for some blood, but it’s well done. The film is shot well, although I have to admit that a few of the scenes were pretty dark and hard to make out. Still, that doesn’t detract from the film overall and is a minor inconvenience.

Not to give too much away, but the film has a great twist at the end that I didn’t see coming. I will obviously not spoil it for you, but you should definitely check this one out to see what happens. If you liked I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE, you will love SWEET KARMA.

True crime fans...check out SERIAL KILLER MAGAZINE!!

I have always been a fan of true crime....from movies to books, if it is a about actually cases, I want to read about them.   I have read many books on killers such as Ed Gein and Albert Fish. I'm not sure what is about these people that we find so interesting, but a lot of people like to read about them. I think the popularity with serial killers comes from the fact that most people just cant fathom what they did. They do stuff that we normally see in horror films. What makes a person be able to do such heinous things? These are the questions we like to answer so we look to movies and books about this subject to find out what makes these people who they are.

Well, if you are interested in true crime and serial killers, there is a magazine out there that you can not afford to miss. I'm not sure how I came across this company, but they make tons of great products all dealing with serial killers. The company is serialkillercalendar.com, and yes, they do make serial killer calendars!   They also make the wonderful Serial Killer Magazine.

Serial Killer Magazine is full of info and stories about every serial killer you can think of. This is a big magazine, with regular issues at 100 pages on glossy pages with a nice card stock glossy cover.   You might think the $20 price tag is a little expensive for a magazine, but keep in mind a lot of reference work and writing goes into each magazine. There is also great artwork from a number of different artists. Also, I don't know if it is like this with every issue, but the issue I read has ZERO ads in it. You are paying for a full 100 pages of info, not ads! This is really like more of a small book than a magazine, and is well worth the price in my opinion.

Each magazine brings you stories of serial killers....most of whom you have probably heard of, but also some more obscure ones you probably have never heard of. The issue I read even had some info about serial killers from different countries, something we don't hear much about usually. The magazines also contains rare interviews with the serial killers, letters written by serial killers, rare F.B.I. file transcripts, and even copies of some of the killers birth certificates, which is very unique. The issue I read also had a story on how serial killers have influenced slasher films which was a very interesting read.

I admit, I am really not much of a reader. I read horror magazines constantly, but I don't read many books. I am just not that fast of a reader, nor do I have the time to read much with a full time job, a wife and kids, and this website which I am constantly needing to watch screeners for. It is a book written for us workers to help us follow the lead of zombies and get ahead in the corporate world by following the techniques and work ethics of zombies. Blu-ray review: DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (2010)

DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK is one of those films that I wanted to see in the theater, but never got the chance to.   I recently was able to check it out on the newly released Blu-ray from Sony Home Entertainment, and overall, I thought this was a wonderful film. Here is the basic plot from the Sony Home Entertainment website:

Sally, a young girl, moves to Rhode Island to live with her father and his new girlfriend in the 19th-century mansion they are restoring. While exploring the house, Sally starts to hear voices coming from creatures in the basement whose hidden agenda is to claim her as one of their own.

I knew with a screenplay by Guillermo del Toro, that this was probably going to be a good film.   But not only was the story good, it was just so well made. The cinematography is amazing, as are the sets and outdoor scenery. The movie just looks good, from every aspect.

Another great thing I noticed about this film while watching it, was the great music and sound effects. The film is full of creepy, moody, music and some wonderful sound effects. The main ones being the whispering voices that young Sally hears coming from the house.    These voices were very creepy, especially when watching the film in 5.1 surround sound.

Now, don't get me wrong...I really liked this film, but if I have to mention that I was slightly disappointed when I found out the things haunting the house were little creature things. I really don't know what to call them and they were really never explained. They look like a cross between a small troll and a chinchilla.   I guess I was just more surprised by this than anything....maybe if I knew going in that this was a "creature feature" type film, I would have been ok with it, but I was expecting a more typical haunted house style film where the house was haunted by more human spirits. But, if you know about the creatures going in, then maybe you won't be disappointed. Again, don't think this means I didn't enjoy this film. I did, and I recommend it to anyone, it just took me off guard, that is all.

The Blu-ray is packed with special features including a Conceptual Art Gallery, and a 3 part Making-Of Documentary which includes "The Story", "Blackwood's Mansion", and "The Creatures".

DVD Review: TUCKER & DALE VS. EVIL (2010)

Sometimes the phrase "modern day cult classic" gets thrown around a little too much when people describe a good horror film. Those are strong words for sure, and if you are going to use them, the film you are describing better be able to back it up.   Well, I have no doubt that this film can back it up. TUCKER & DALE VS. EVIL is a modern day cult classic.    This is a film that won't be forgotten anytime soon. For those that aren't familiar with it, here is the basic plot of the film from imdb:

Two lovable West Virginian hillbillies, are headed to their "fixer-upper" vacation cabin to drink some beer, do some fishin', and have a good time. But when they run into a group of preppy college kids who assume from their looks that they must be in-bred, chainsaw wielding killers, Tucker & Dale's vacation takes a bloody & hilarious turn for the worse.

Probably most everyone reading this blog has at least heard of this film, but has everyone seen it yet? If not, why not?   I am so behind on screeners that I was just able to finally watch this a few days ago and I am kicking myself for not watching it sooner. Do your self a favor and get your hands on a copy of this film asap.

I really have nothing bad to say about this film. It was a great film in every aspect. It is hard to pull off a good horror/comedy film, but the filmmakers pulled this one off flawlessly. The acting in this film is superb, with Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine in the lead roles of Tucker and Dale. These guys were perfect for these roles and played them perfectly. I can't imagine a different actor in either one of these parts.

The entire concept of this film was new (to me anyway). I can't think of another film with this kind of story, where people think the other people are killers but they are just dying on their own. It is a very unique plot idea, which is hard to find with most horror films these days.

I think this film is more comedy than horror, but there is enough of both to satisfy everyone. I know quite a few people who don't necessarily like horror films that loved this film because it was so funny. I also know a lot of gore fans (including myself) that loved it because of the great gore in this film. There is something in this film for everyone!

Words can't do this film justice, so I will stop babbling on about it. Just go watch it. I know you will love it! The DVD comes packed full of special features including:

A lot of you might already know this, but my contributing writer I have on the 4H blog, Scott Baker, also has his own blog called SHATTERED RAVINGS. His blog has actually been around a lot longer than the 4H blog, so it is full of great stuff! I browse his blog often (as should you). He does a lot of movie reviews like I do, but he does more than just horror. He also reviews sci-fi and fantasy films and other genres. I know I can always find some good horror stuff on his blog though, and recently I came across a post about a new film called MARY HORROR! Here is the plot synopsis from the film's official website:

Mary Horowitz is a normal high school senior who has just moved from Salem Massachusetts to a small corrupt town in New Jersey. Mary’s life has not been going the way she planned. Her grandmother has passed away, her best friend Kelly has been missing for almost two weeks, and she suspects her boyfriend of cheating on the eve of her homecoming dance. A distraught Mary comes home to witness her family being brutally murdered. Being the only one to survive, she is put in a psychiatric prison to be “protected”. As two years pass by, Mary realizes what really happened that night wasn’t what she thought. As the plot unravels, so does Mary. Graphic Novel review: SOMETHING ANIMAL from Fanboy Comics

A while back I wrote about a graphic novel and short film called SOMETHING ANIMAL from Fanboy Comics. Well, the graphic novel is finally out and I recently got my hands on a copy. For those not familiar with the story, here is the basic plot synopsis from the official website of the graphic novel:

After witnessing his sister's brutal murder, Jack struggles to cope with the disturbing, psychological aftermath. Tormented by images of the attack, Jack finds himself physically ill and unable to eat.

Scared and alone, he is forced to confront a growing thirst for blood and the harsh reality that either his sanity is quickly crumbling or that he is turning into something else... something dark... something animal...

I liked this graphic novel a lot...it is a very simple story and really doesn't have much dialog for a graphic novel. The majority of the story is told through the artwork of Robert Burrows. I mentioned in my last post about SOMETHING ANIMAL that the art style is not polished at all. It is rough and a little distorted at times, but it works perfectly for this dark subject matter.

I like the story a lot, but I did feel it ended rather abruptly and left many questions to be answered. I have a feeling this is a just a drop in the bucket of the SOMETHING ANIMAL story. I think this graphic novel is just setting the background for us and I think this story is really going to take off in a future follow up book.

DVD Review: PSYCHO GOTHIC LOLITA (2010)

When a movie starts out with a be-heading and a scene of a woman being split in half all in the opening scene before the title is even displayed, then that movie is for me!    PSYCHO GOTHIC LOLITA is an amazing film that packs a punch right from the beginning and never lets go.
Here is the plot description from the back of the DVD:

Yuki once led a peaceful life with her loving parents, but her family's happiness was taken away suddenly one day by a group wearing black cloaks. Her father lost the ability to walk, and her mother was massacred. Yuki, the only one to escape the violence, was left with unanswered questions and profound sorrow. But that sadness soon turned into a smoldering anger and a burning resolve to get to the bottom of the mystery. Fashioning herself into an elegant demon of vengeance, Yuki sets off wearing her jet-black gothic lolita dress in search of payback for her mother's death.

I have a feeling a lot of you might not know about this film, but you definitely should. This film is like some of the other great Japanese splatter fests like TOKYO GORE POLICE, MACHINE GIRL, and MUTANT GIRLS SQUAD just to name a few.   This one didn't seem to get as much press as those other films did, which is a shame, because I think this is definitely as good as those other films if not better.

I am not sure why Americans haven't learned the art of the splatter movie yet. I mean, we have films we call splatter movies, but take a look at a Japanese splatter film and you will see that American films don't begin to compare with their Japanese counterparts.  It's a good thing we have access to these films..if not, we would be missing out on a lot of fun...and blood!

Like most of the Japanese horror films, this film has a lot of martial arts fighting in it. The fight sequences are choreographed amazing well and the fight scenes contain some very stylistic camera work.   While all this great, everything comes back to copious amounts of blood and the amazing gore effects.   Gore fans will have a field day with this one. PSYCHO GOTHIC LOLITA is not to be missed!

Flea Market Horror Finds!!!

Something you may not know about me....I love Flea Markets!   I love garage sales too, but a Flea Market is like multiple garage sales all under one roof! You never know what you are going to find, and if you are a collector of anything, a flea market can be a great place to pick up some cheap collectibles. I collect baseball/basketball cards, books, and comic books, so I am always finding these things at flea markets. I obviously love movies as well, and almost any flea market you go in will have a booth selling cheap DVD's.
I am, of course, always on the lookout for anything horror related, and a recent visit to a new local flea market resulted in some great finds!
I first ran across the ALIEN VS. PREDATOR DVD box set, containing both AVP films. Cost....$4!   Next (in the same booth), I ran across this awesome Jason Voorhees hockey mask baseball cap! It was even new with the tag still on! Cost...$1!
Finally, in booth full of books, I ran across the Battle Royale novel. BATTLE ROYALE is an awesome film, if you haven't seen it, check it out. Cost of the Battle Royale book....$2.
So, I got all this stuff for a total of only $7!! I was very excited to say the least!
If you have never checked out a flea market, thinking it was just antiques and junk, think again and check them out....as you can see, you can find some pretty cool stuff at these places!

DVD Review: KILLER EYE: HALLOWEEN HAUNT (2011)

Back in June of 2009, I did a review for a film called, THE KILLER EYE. While I thought at the time the movie wasn't so great, compared to this "sequel", it was a masterpiece. KILLER EYE: HALLOWEEN HAUNT should have been so much better. The fist film was made in 1999, so being 12 years later, this newest installment should have been full of better effects, but it looks about the same.
Here is the basic plot of the film from the Full Moon website:

When Jenna asks her four hot girlfriends to help convert an old mansion into a Halloween Haunt, they decide to party instead! Things get steamy between the girls, until they accidentally unleash the half-pint, horrible Killer Eye, a perverse party crasher from beyond. Bent on having his way, the Killer Eye will stop at nothing until he gets exactly what he wants.

Now don't get me wrong, I knew what I was getting into when I popped this DVD into the player. I wasn't expecting any brilliant new horror classic in the making. I did expect a fun film that kept me entertained (like most Full Moon films do), but this one just did not deliver that for me this time. The premise was good, and I liked how they tied the first film into this one showing clips from the original as the group of girls settle in to watch the film.

The film has some good qualities, but it never never brings them to full fruition. There is a some cool and creepy scenery and images, mainly the baby doll and masks in the bedroom, but we don't see enough of these and they are not a main part of the film. The film also takes place entirely in the house the girls are having the sleepover at.

The acting is ok, the girls are nice to look at, and there are some funny lines (and a Gingerdead Man mask cameo!), but overall this film just didn't do anything for me.

I just got a press release announcing a new film that sounds very intriguing. The film is called HUMAN FACTOR and is about a place called Metro City, where suddenly all of the homeless population begins turning up dead. This is an interesting premise, and I assume will turn out to be some kind of serial killer film where the killer targets homeless people. Should be interesting for sure, and I was really surprised by the amazing cast assembled for this film.
The film stars Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight, Chillerama), Tom Sizemore (Natural Born Killers, True Romance), Danny Trejo (Machete, Predators), Charisma Carpenter (Expendables), David Zayas (Dexter), George Lazenby (old 007 "In Her Majestys Secret Service"), Shalim Ortiz (CSI: Miami, Heroes), Keith David, Kim Sønderholm, Laci Kay, Walker Howard, Deborah Twiss, Doug Jones, Ben Cross, Gary Daniels and many others!

We don't have much info right now, mainly just this teaser trailer, but I'm sure we will be hearing more about this closer to the release date.

I hope you all had a great Christmas holiday! It's that time of year that I like to show you the horror related items I got for Christmas this year, and hear all about what you got too!!

I got some great horror related items this year..first up, is the book HORROR MOVIE FREAK by Don Sumner. This looks to be a super cool book with lots of great info and cool color photos. It even comes with a DVD of the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD!

I also got some cool horror related Xbox 360 games! I got RED DEAD REDEMPTION: UNDEAD NIGHTMARE, RISE OF NIGHTMARES, and the one I am most excited about, DEAD ISLAND!!

DVD Review: A CADAVER CHRISTMAS (2011)

It's getting closer to Christmas, so this will be my last post for a few days while I spend time with family and friends over the next few days and nights. What better way to end it than with another Christmas themed horror flick. This time, we have director Joe Zerull's independent feature film, A CADAVER CHRISTMAS. Here is the basic plot of the film from imdb.com:

United by terrifying and bizarre circumstances, the janitor, the drunk, the bartender, the cop, his perp, and the student security guard must fight to undo the professor's work. A dark force is at work in the cadaver lab this Christmas and this unconventional band of heroes are the only hope the world has against an army of living corpses that are quickly recruiting new members. The undead have been given the gift of life and it's up to the janitor to take it back.

This was a very fun film, and one I would definitely recommend. I love zombie films, and you just don't find too many zombie Christmas films, so it is good that we have A CADAVER CHRISTMAS!

The film is a very low budget film, but the filmmakers do the best with what they have. I am primarily talking about the gore effects. The zombies themselves aren't too impressive (although as the janitor will tell you, these are not actually zombies, just reanimated cadavers), but it is the zombie kills that are most impressive. This is especially noticeable in the final climax of the film when our survivors go off on the zombies in a rampage of gun blasts and exploding heads, all set to the tune of a the beautiful Christmas song, O Holy Night. That scene was brilliant for many reasons, but the contrast of that beautiful song set against the gore and massacring occurring on screen was very effective.

The acting in this film was great, especially for a film of this caliber and with no star actors. There was as much humor in this film as there was horror, so you can enjoy this film in both aspects.

One more cool thing about this film I want to mention is the way that is was shot. It was very stylistic with some great camera angles and shots. Also, the film is made to look like an old theater print of a film, complete with scratch marks and debris that used to get on the film and show up on screen. That and some saturated colors and tones give this film a 70's or early 80''s grindhouse feel to it.

Again, I highly recommend you check this one out. This will be essential viewing for me every Christmas from here on out for sure!

DVD Review: DON'T OPEN TILL CHRISTMAS (1984)

DON'T OPEN TILL CHRISTMAS

Just in time for Christmas comes this little known slasher flick from Mondo Macabro and the great folks at TLA Releasing. TLA is selling this film under their TLA Cult line.   I say this film is "little known" because I, for one, had never heard of it before. Maybe some of you already knew about this one, but I sure didn't. I am glad I finally got to know about this film, even if it is 27 years after it's initial release! For those of you like me that aren't familiar with this film, here is the basic plot synopsis from TLAcult.com:

It's Christmas time in London - the season of good will to all men. A time for celebration, a time for family, a time for presents. This year, it's also time for a masked maniac to be let loose on the streets. His intended victims are chosen at random but they all have one thing in common: they are dressed in the flowing white beard and bright red robes of Santa Claus.
The police are baffled as the horrific death toll rises. Fourteen dead Santas and only three killing days left until Christmas.

This is a classic 80's slasher film that at first seems to be a little short on plot, focusing more on just the killings, but changes toward the end with a plot twist and the reveal of the killer.   All the elements of a great 80's slasher film are contained in DON'T OPEN TILL CHRISTMAS, including bad 80's hair and clothes, synthesized background sounds and music, gratuitous nudity, and some bad overacting.   All this adds up to a blast from the past when watching this film.   Most everyone will agree that the 80's was the best decade for slasher flicks, so getting to see a new one that I hadn't seen before was quite a treat!

Like all great slasher flicks, there is plenty of blood in this film. The effects are really good including a stabbing scene so realistic I still wonder how they did it and a castration scene that will make me think twice when using a public restroom ever again!

The killer is targeting people in Santa costumes and the flashback as to why that is will make you understand why those in Santa suits are getting singled out.   The only thing I didn't understand is why (when it is all over the news and paper that there is a killer on the loose targeting those dressed in Santa costumes) there are are so many people still dressing in Santa suits out in public!

DON'T OPEN TILL CHRISTMAS was definitely a fun find and one I will be adding to my yearly holiday viewing schedule from here on out.

DVD Review: PEEPING BLOG (2011)

PEEPING BLOG is a movie I had never heard of until I found it in my mailbox for review. After "watching" this film, I can see now why I have never heard of it....it is not worth talking about!
Here is the plot synopsis from the MVD website:

The Peeper has a "how to" website on peeping and stalking called Peeping Blog. On this site he gives advice and helpful hints on those who want to stalk people. Tonight though, he has a new camera and will document his peeping of his new victim. When an unexpected guest shows up at his victims home, he is trapped inside. He must decide if he wants to get caught, make a run for it, or do the unthinkable and take his stalking to the next level of murder.

I never like to talk bad about some one's film....as an aspiring filmmaker myself, I know how much hard work goes into making a film. BUT.....this film was awful. Notice I put the term "watching" in quotes above? I did that because to be honest, I didn't watch every second of this film...because most of the time I was fast forwarding the DVD until something good happened.   Unfortunately, I ended up fast forwarding through probably 75% of this film.

The film starts out with a guy in a car filming himself driving around...the camera is pointed out the front window so you get a first person perspective of the "action". You see him drive down the road, then another road, then through a parking lot and then back through the parking lot, then around in circles in the parking lot for some reason, and so on. After about 5 minutes of that, the fast forward button was put into use. Later we see the peeper is in a woman's apartment and he watches her as she watches TV, then she eats food! Then a friend of hers comes over and they....are you ready for this....talk on the couch!!!   Really?   I expected a lot more out of film who's cover boasts the quote "the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY" of stalker films". The originator of this quote, horrorgrind (whatever that is), has apparently never seen PARANORMAL ACTIVITY or any decent stalker films before this film, because comparing this film to that is a complete joke.

This movie has a good concept, but it was just not executed well at all. The film is listed with a running time of 75 minutes, which was about 70 minutes too long for this film.   This would have made a great short film, but it did not have enough substance to warrant a full feature running time. I don't know anything about this director, Creep Creepersin, other than the fact that he has a cool name. I only wish this film was as cool as his name. I think I was sent another film for review by this director (Creep Creepersin's Frankenstein), hopefully that film will be better than this one. Look for that review coming soon.   Until then, my advice is to steer clear of PEEPING BLOG, this one is a real stinker.

Book Review: DEAD OF WINTER by Brian Moreland

If you are not familiar with author Brian Moreland already, there is a good bet you will be very soon. Why? I would wager that he will be one of the premiere horror writers of this decade. I just finished his novel DEAD OF WINTER, and I have to tell you: it’s a damn good read.

If you have not heard of DEAD OF WINTER, here is the plot synopsis courtesy of the press release:

A predator stalks the frozen woods. At a fort deep in the Ontario wilderness in 1870, a ghastly predator is attacking colonists and spreading a gruesome plague - his victims turn into ravenous cannibals with an unending hunger for human flesh. Inspector Tom Hatcher has faced a madman before, when he tracked down Montreal’s infamous Cannery Cannibal. But can even he stop the slaughter this time?

In Montreal, exorcist Father Xavier visits an asylum where the Cannery Cannibal is imprisoned. But the killer who murdered thirteen women is more than just a madman who craves human meat. He is possessed by a shape-shifting demon. Inspector Hatcher and Father Xavier must unravel the mystery that has spanned centuries and confront a predator that has turned the frozen woods into a killing ground where evil has come to feed.

The story puts the reader directly into the middle of the action, starting with page one. That was one of the major aspects that drew me into the book; I’m not a big fan of long, drawn out openings. Moreland masterfully kicks DEAD OF WINTER off with a bang and then keeps on going like a perpetual fright machine.

Moreland’s writing style is excellent, with quick, flowing prose that never dawdles. The action is quick, the dialogue sharp, and the horror...well, let’s just say that there are several scenes in the book that caused me to have a few sleepless nights. Seriously. I’m not usually one to be affected by things of a horror nature (after all, I saw my first horror movie when I was like eight years-old); but there are things in DEAD OF WINTER that will literally keep you up at night.

I have not read any of Brian Moreland’s other books, but I will definitely be picking them up soon. He is a force to be reckoned with and a bright spot in the future of horror fiction. DEAD OF WINTER will be published January 3, 2012. Pick this one up for sure!!

Blu-ray Review: MANIAC COP (1988)

MANIAC COP is a film I have always known about, but for one reason or another have just never seen. The premise sounds cool and it stars two of my favorite horror movie actors (Bruce Campbell and Tom Atkins), but this was just always slipped past me somehow.   If you haven't seen this film either, now is a perfect time now that the fine folks at Synapse Films have released this brand new high-definition transfer of the original unaltered theatrical release version! If you are not familiar with the film, here is the basic plot courtesty of the Synapse Films website:

Innocent people are brutally killed on the streets of New York by a uniformed police officer. A young cop, Jack Forrest (Bruce Campbell, TV’s BURN NOTICE and the EVIL DEAD trilogy), finds himself marked as the chief suspect after his wife is murdered. As Lieutenant Frank McCrae (Tom Atkins, DRIVE ANGRY and LETHAL WEAPON) investigates, the death toll rises and he suspects a mysterious police cover-up. This “maniac” cop must be stopped, but it might not be so easy. He seems inhuman, and ready to take on the entire police force, hell-bent on revenge!

I'm not sure why you don't hear more about this film....this film isn't talked about too much, but to me this is a classic slasher flick for sure! It was at least good enough to garner two sequels and can definitely hold its own when compared with other horror films of the 80's (the greatest decade for horror films in my humble opinion).

MANIAC COP actually reminded me of a FRIDAY THE 13TH film. I say that because the killer in this film is a big, hulking man who moves slow and [in the beginning at least] never shows his face. When we do see his face finally, it is very disfigured and we get a flashback scene to explain why. Slap a hocky mask on this beastly cop and you could have a FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 8: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN that was actually good!! HA!

I loved the fact that this killer was a cop, or at least wore a cop uniform.   Policeman usually are the ones to protect us from the bad guys, so when the main bad guy is a cop, it gives the viewer a real uneasy feeling.  This was noticed right from the start when in the opening scene a lady is mugged by two street hoods. She gets away and they chase her, but before they can catch her, she spots a policeman in the distance. She runs to him yelling "Officer! Officer!" and when she gets to him, you can see an instantaneous feeling of safety replace here feeling of panice and dispair. This feeling of safety and protection is short lived, though, as she sees the officer's face and is lifted off the ground by the neck. Her neck is snapped and she is tossed aside like a piece of trash.   The thought of someone who is supposed to protect you being the one you have to be aware of is very unsettleing to me.   Another grim aspect of the killer stalking the city being a cop is that all over the city, people now don't trust any of the police officers. This leads to a very grueling scene in which an innocent cop is shot by a motorist thinking she was about to be attacked by the "maniac cop" on the loose.

This is a great film and I recommend it for any horror fan. It was a blas seeing Bruce Campbell in another horror film other than the EVIL DEAD films.    As with all their titles, Synapse Films has released this Blu-ray with tons of awesome special features including the following:

Blu-ray Review: THE WALKIND DEAD (3-Disc Special Edition)

A while back I reviewed the Blu-ray set of THE WALKING DEAD: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON. You can see that review here. That was a great Blu-ray set with tons of special features, but now the great folks at Anchor Bay have released this 3-Disc Special Edition of THE WALKING DEAD! This is by far one of the greatest shows ever shown on TV in my opinion. Each week it is like watching a short film rather than a TV show. The production value is so much better than most shows and the acting and story lines are excellent.

If you are not familiar with this show, this would be a great way to get introduced to it. Pick up the 3 Disc Special Edition and watch all the episodes back to back, commercial free!   While the show itself is the main draw here, the best part about this set is the awesome special features. Brand new bonus features on this set include the following:

The effects are very well done and it is a lot of fun to see how the make up artist bring these zombies to life...er, so to speak.

I also loved the "We Are The Walking Dead" which chronicles the daily shooting of the show and includes some great behind the scenes stuff and some wonderful zombie audition footage...it is funny seeing an entire room of people there to audition try to walk around like zombies in order to land a role on the show.    This is stuff you normally don't get to see with shows and it is really fun to watch.

All the special features from the first DVD and Blu-ray release are on this new set as well as the new ones mentioned above.   I would do yourself a favor and pick up this new set, even if you have the older DVD set. These new special features are worth the prince of the set alone!

DVD Review: HILLSIDE CANNIBALS (2006)

I honestly don’t go out of my way to butcher the films that Hayes has me review. I seriously don’t. It’s not like I look at a title and say to myself “Well, that one is going to get worked over pretty good!” But I can’t lie to you...I have to be honest in my assessments. I mean, what kind of credibility would I have as a reviewer if I told you all films were glorious? That’s right...none.

I am prefacing my review of HILLSIDE CANNIBALS with this commentary so that you folks won’t think I’m out for any specific company’s or director’s blood. I swear...Scout’s honor! So when I tell you how bad this film sucked, I don’t want you to look at me any differently, either.

If you are not familiar with HILLSIDE CANNIBALS, here is the plot synopsis courtesy of The Aslylum's website:

The world's most brutal serial killer was born over 400 years ago. Sawney Bean and his family pillaged, slaughtered, and literally devoured thousands of victims. Even today, the inbred clan of cannibals hides in seaside caves feeding on the flesh of those who pass by.

I wanted to like this movie, I really did. I mean, how can you NOT like something that is supposedly the basis for one of the creepiest movies of all time (i.e. The Hills Have Eyes)? But unfortunately, I walked away from this film feeling bored and disappointed.

The plot is one we are already familiar with, thanks to the film mentioned above. Thus, I sorta knew what to expect before I started watching it. But even so, I didn’t expect what I got. HILLSIDE CANNIBALS barely has a positive trait about it in any form or fashion.

The acting is horrible. The cast tries, but they all come across like Junior High secondaries, hoping the main stars break their legs prior to the curtain rising. The over-acting flows like the blood should have in this film.

This is not to mention the awful casting decisions. I mean, the cannibals looks like college students with dingy clothes. I seriously don’t think a guy with a frat-house hairdo should be playing an “inbred cannibal”...that just doesn’t work on any level. And the rest of the “cannibals” are all curvaceous females and buff, rock-star wannabes.

I wanted to sit the production team down and say “What the hell were you thinking? Were you drunk?” That’s how pissed off HILLSIDE CANNIBALS made me...I seriously thought about trying to look them up for an “interview”. How can you disgrace the good name of a Wes Craven film by associating it with something like this?

The ONLY saving grace for this film is that it is shot very well. The scenery is beautiful and the DoP does an amazing job of catching it in almost every scene...well, when we’re not forced into the “cave” with the “cannibals”, that is.

HILLSIDE CANNIBALS is a definite miss for me. I would give this one a pass. The bad casting and overacting are combined with a lack of decent gore and a so-so script...watching this one is a waste of time.

DVD Review: PSYCHO SLEEPOVER (2008)

Ahh...Troma Films, you gotta love 'em...right? Ha! Well, PSYCHO SLEEPOVER is not one I loved, although it's also not one I hated. I find it hard to write reviews on films like this when I don't really have an opinion in either direction, good or bad, about the film.   It's almost like I don't have anything to say about it since I don't feel strongly about it either way. But I will give it a shot. Before I go on, here is the basic plot from the CAV website:

After accidentally murdering her boyfriend, Debbie Dicky moves to a new town and meets three girls who invite her to a sleepover. The very same night there is a` breakout at the local insane asylum where forty serial killers escape and head over to crash the party. However, the girls at the slumber party might not be as helpless as the killers think.

First off, I love the premise of this movie. Let's face it, the escaped mentally ill serial killer coming to wreak havoc on a slumber party or babysitter or something of the sort has been done before. Many times before. But PSYCHO SLEEPOVER is not just about a mentally ill serial killer escaping the insane asylum, it is about 40 serial killers that escape!! All on the same night, and they are all heading to the exact same house! HA! Brilliant!   All the serial killers all have their own unique quirks about them, from their weapons of choice to their "costumes".   The cover of the DVD cracks me up with all the weapons around the edge of the cover all coming toward the "helpless girls".

Another good thing about this film is the gore. There is a lot of blood in this film, which is always a plus. There are a ton of good gore shots, and although most are pretty cheaply done, they are all pretty effective.

The downside to this movie is that although it started off strong with a very funny scene between a regular guy and his catholic goody-two-shoes girlfriend (he is tired of just Eskimo kissing and she isn't ready to go "all the way" to kissing using lips! ha), and ending strong, the middle just seemed to drag on a bit.   The running time is listed at just 87 minutes but I would swear it was 187 minutes!!
If you can get through that and make it to the end, you are treated to a wild and crazy romp when the girls fight back against the crazy serial killers!

Like I said before, this one is a toss up for me.   I'm glad I watched it, but I don't see watching this again in the near future. I can see how this could be a lot of fun as a party movie, if you had a bunch of friends over and just needed some mindless fun, this would be a great film to choose.

DVD Review: BENEATH THE FLESH (2009)

I have always prided myself on my ability to interpret symbolism. Whether it be in a book or a movie, I can usually pick up the deeper meanings that are implied within certain things. But with that being said, I am completely lost as to what was going on in BENEATH THE FLESH.
If you're not familiar with this collection of short films, then you're not alone...I watched them, but am still clueless as to what I saw. Here is the plot synopsis courtesy of the DVD cover:

BENEATH THE FLESH is a collection of nightmares that will crawl under your skin and burrow its way into your mind. In 'Id', a man is tormented by a twisted creature in his apartment. In 'The Basement', two men confront each other in a damp, filthy basement. In 'The Child', a withered man nurtures a strange entity. In 'The Insides', a man believes something is growing inside of him. Finally, in 'Boxhead', an old man is visited by a childhood friend that could be his darkest nightmare. The victim in each story is forced to confront a fear that is eating them from the inside out. They will deal with this fear or die with it.

When I say I don't know whats going on in these films, I am not kidding. Each film is a head-trip that squeezes your brain as it tries to make sense of what it is seeing. 'Surreal' is about the closest word I can use to describe the feeling, although 'annoying' has to be close as well. I don't like it when I don't know what's going on, especially in a film.

Take, for example, the first film, 'Boxhead'. In this film, a wisp of a man is bullied and belittled by the people around him...as he talks to a weird paper-mâché looking creature in his apartment. Every now and then, the scene shifts to a young boy that crawls in and out of a box. That's it. No explanation or even real plot that I can find. I suppose the implication is that the little boy is the man as a child...but we never get any indication of that.

All of the films in this set are like that. And, all the films are directed by the same guy, director Randall Kaplan...which might explain the vagueness. I'm not saying he does not have talent. They are all shot well and have some excellent uses of lighting...but those are the only two positives I can list. Some might call these films experimental and some might label them as controversial. Me, I'm going to chalk them up to 'creative expression' and leave it at that.

I'm not recommending this collection, simply because none of the films entertained me. I was more annoyed than anything after I had watched them all, to be honest. I can certainly think of better ways to spend an hour of my life.

Check out the awesome iPhone game, ARMY OF DARKNESS: DEFENSE

I recently found this game on the iPhone app store based on the classic film, ARMY OF DARKNESS. It is called ARMY OF DARKNESS: DEFENSE and you play as Ash as you fight off an army of incoming deadites to protect the Necronomicon! Game play is very simple and you earn money to buy upgrades including soldiers to help you fight (including the beloved Henry The Red!) and weapons including the iconic chainsaw!! Check out this game if you are a fan of the EVIL DEAD films. I thought it was kind boring at first, but the more I played it the more it really grew on me. It is now my latest iPhone addiction! My buddy Caleb is always pointing out cool horror stuff he thinks I might like and my blog readers might like. He has once again hit a home run with this one! Caleb recently told me to go watch the short film, DEUS IRAE. He didn't tell me anything about it, he just told me to go watch it and I am glad I listened to him. This is an awesome short film that is being turned into a feature length film according to the film's official website.
Here is the basic plot synopsis of the short film from the film's official website:

A fragile border separates our world from the realm of darkness, a limit where nightmarish creatures await in the shadows, looking for a way into our world: the tender souls of the weak and the innocent. Once possessed, people are used as portals to infect our reality.

Only one thing has been standing in their way: a secret order of priests, who devote their lives and souls to protect this border. Soldiers of a silent war, who hunt the monsters down to look them in the eye... and blow them away.

They are the 'Deus Irae'.

Check this one out for sure......this is an amazing short that keeps you wanting more! I really hope this gets made into a full feature like the website says. I want to see more from the 'Deus Irae'!!

DVD Review: GINGERDEAD MAN 3: SATURDAY NIGHT CLEAVER (2011)

Let me start by saying that I have not seen any of the previous GINGERDEAD MAN films, so I wasn't sure if I would be totally lost when watching GM3, but rest assured it didn't matter. Sure, I might not know why this particular baked good is on a killing rampage, I missed his back story I'm sure, but that really doesn't matter. All you need to know is that this is not your ordinary gingerbread man and he likes to kill people. There, that is all the back story you need, now you can sit back and enjoy GINGERDEAD MAN 3: SATURDAY NIGHT CLEAVER!
Here is the basic plot (from the back of the DVD cover):

After cleverly escaping the maximum security Research institute of Homicidal Baked Goods, the Gingerdead Man stumbles upon a time machine and finds himself
sent back in time as he slaughters the contestants of a 1970's Roller Boogie contest. The only hope for survival is when a young girl blessed with the gift of
telekinesis makes the scene.

First off, you have to know what you are getting into when you put in a film called GINGERDEAD MAN 3: SATURDAY NIGHT CLEAVER! HA! Don't expect the best horror movie you've ever seen and don't expect Mr. Gingerdead Man to be walking the carpet at next years Oscar awards. What you do get with this film, though, is a fun, entertaining, hour and however long this movie is...and that is what I expect when I put in a movie. GM3 did not disappoint in that aspect. This film is a lot of fun.

I knew I would like this movie from the very beginning. It starts off with a hilarious spoof of the film, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. In this film, FBI agent Clarice Darling goes to talk to the infamous Gingerdead Man, but first must walk the hallway with homicidal baked goods locked up on both sides, including a loaf of french bread and a nasty little cream puff that says something very rude to her (as much as I want to tell you what he says, I don't want to ruin the joke for you!!).

This was just one of the many movie parodies throughout this film, there is also a hilarious spoof on the PORKY'S bathroom scene and spoof on the Stephen King flick, CARRIE.

Aside from the comedic aspect of the film, there was plenty of horror as well, including a great scene where some roller girls are having a car wash outside the Roller Rink to raise money, and our friend the Gingerdead Man hooks the water hoses to vats of Sulfuric Acid...needless to say when the girls start wetting each other down, things turn from sexy to downright disgusting in a matter of seconds, as the girls flesh begins to be eaten off the bone!!

Overall, this is a winner for me when it comes to Full Moon movies......I enjoyed this one as much as I have enjoyed any of the other film Full Moon has released recently. I recommend you check this one out if you can just set aside some time for just a fun movie, you'll get a good laugh out of it at yeast, I mean least!! HA!!

DVD Review: THANKSKILLING (2009)

Wow, I have seen some real "turkeys" before, but this one out does them all! HA! Ok, I admit this film is bad, but luckily this film is one of those rare ones that falls into the category of "so-bad-it's-good". Here is the basic plot courtesy of the MVD website:

While on their way home for Thanksgiving break, five college kids run "afowl" of a homicidal turkey that wants them dead. As the cursed bird hunts them down one by one, the survivors scramble to find a way to defeat the possessed creature. Will the bloodthirsty turkey make this their last Thanksgiving feast ever?

Ok, well, you know what you are getting yourself into as soon as you put this DVD in. You really aren't expecting a great piece of cinema. You are looking for a dumb film that can make you laugh and have some fun. That is exactly what your get with THANKSKILLING.

The acting in this film is horrible by most all actors/actresses involved.   The exception to this to me was actor Chuck Lamb who played the Sherrif. He was funny character and played that part well. I only wish he would have been in the film more.   Other than that, the killer turkey itself was probably the other acting highlight of this film. He delivered his one liners perfectly!

The film does have some good gore effects, including a scene in which the aforementioned Sheriff has his face peeled off. This leads to probably the funniest scene in the film as the killer turkey wears the Sheriff's face like a mask, fooling everyone including his daughter to think its the actual Sheriff.

This is a perfect example of a perfect party movie. Have some friends over and get a good laugh out of THANKSKILLING!    Or better yet, throw it in the DVD player for all the family to enjoy right after your Thanksgiving meal!

Book Review: LOW TOWN by Daniel Polansky

LOW TOWN by Daniel Polansky was not what I was expecting and that is a good thing. When the author was compared to Quentin Tarantino in a press release I was leery, especially since I’m a fan of Tarantino… in small doses. Polansky does an incredible job of crafting a great yarn and while the setting and subject matter is dark, the story is lightened by sarcastic dialogue from the protagonist. Here is the basic plot synopsis of the book courtesy of the book's official website:

Rigus is the greatest city in the Thirteen Lands, a glittering metropolis of crystalline citadels and sumptuous manors, where gentlewomen hide delicate smiles behind silken sleeves and bored nobles settle affairs of honor with cold steel. But light casts shadow, and in the darkness of the spires the baseborn struggle, eking out an existence amidst the cast-offs of their betters. This is Low Town, a sprawling warren of side streets and back alleys, of boarded up windows and false storefronts. Here the corner boys do a steady trade to the dead eyed and despairing, and a life can be bought with a clipped copper penny.
Low Town is an ugly place, and its champion is an ugly man. A former war hero and intelligence agent, now a crime lord addicted to cheap violence and expensive narcotics, the Warden spends his days hustling for customers and protecting his turf, until the chance discovery of a murdered child sets him on a collision course with the life he'd left behind. As bodies bloat in the canal and winter buries the city, he plays a desperate game of deception, pitting the underworld powers against his former colleagues in the secret police, hoping to find the source of the evil before it consumes him, and perhaps the city itself.

After an initial slow start, LOW TOWN picks up the pace and it’s obvious that Polansky finds the rhythm of his novel. The main character and narrator, Warden, isn’t just a stereotypical anti-hero. He becomes complex, especially when it’s accurately portrayed that Warden shouldn’t even be likable. As the local known drug dealer in Low Town, there shouldn’t be a lot to say for him. What makes the character work is how well he fits into his environment; Low Town is a section of a city where those in power would rather forget that it even exists. Because of that, the residents of Low Town have their own code of ethics and their own way of handling things. The people eke out a meager living barely having enough to live on and those that reside in Low Town have lived through tough times. Warden has grown up there and comes back after losing his job and his expectations are nothing more than surviving another day. He’s a realistic character and when he gets involved in a case involving the disappearing children of Low Town, he realizes he is one of the few with the resource to figure out what is going on.

Not to give the plot away, but there is definitely something that slithers around and goes bump in the night rampaging through Low Town, a force that Warden has seen once before and has plagued him with nightmares ever since. It’s a dark and creepy presence and is the grotesque horror aspect in the novel. LOW TOWN is a mix of detective story, with a little bit of fantasy thrown in and the macabre atmospheric tension of a great horror movie. I get the distinct impression by the set up that this won’t be the last readers have heard from Warden, and that he’ll show up in a sequel in the near future.

DVD Review: HIGANJIMA: ESCAPE FROM VAMPIRE ISLAND (2009)

HIGANJIMA: ESCAPE FROM VAMPIRE ISLAND

As I have stated before, I have never been a big fan of vampire movies. I have always been more of a zombie type guy. Well, I have seen some great vampire films lately (LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, BLOOD), and I can now add FUNimation's latest live action film, HIGANJIMA: ESCAPE FROM VAMPIRE ISLAND, to my list of vampire movies I have thoroughly enjoyed.   I should have known when I saw FUNimation's name on the DVD case that I was in for a treat. They are constantly putting out some of Japan's finest horror films!   Here is the basic plot of the film from the FUNimation website:

Akira and his ragtag group of teenage friends enter a world of danger and action when they land on the shores of Higanjima, an uncharted island that’s overrun by vampires.
After learning that his missing brother might be somewhere on the island, Akira leads his friends on a chilling adventure that takes them from Higanjima’s highest volcanic peaks into the subterranean chambers of the island’s ancient ruins. They’ll face entire villages of sword-wielding vampires while racing to stay a step ahead of winged she-beasts and giant gargoyles. Worst of all, the gang will encounter the deadly master of the island’s monsters: the pale, blood-sucking freakshow known as Miyabi. If the devilishly cruel Miyabi gets his way, none of the young heroes will live to see Akira’s brother – or the mainland – ever again.

This film is a must see for vampire fans.....no, not you "Twilight" vampire fans, I mean fans of REAL vampires!    Director Tae-gyun Kim does an excellent job with his first foray into the realm of horror films (his previous films have all been dramas, romance films, an action, and even a comedy). Kim seems right at home in the horror genre and I personally hope he will return to it sooner than later.

The cinematography of this film is amazing. It is beautifully shot with some excellent scenery (some of which is obvious CG, but still impressive none the less). The use of color always sticks out to me in films and this one is no different.   A blue tone seems to follow through the film, only to be starkly interrupted by the bright red of the blood that flows (or more, splatters) throughout the film.

Yes, while most vampire movies really don't give you too much blood these days, HIGANJIMA gives enough for us gorehounds to be very happy.    As with most of the horror films from Japan, expect some great martial arts fight sequences as well. These are well choreographed and pulled off extremely well by all the actors involved.   Speaking of the actors, the acting is this film is wonderful, not a bad one in the bunch that I can remember.

My only complaint if I had to have one would be a running time. At 122 minutes, I did feel the film drag just a bit at times, but it was nothing major and I was usually greeted with a great scene that was well worth the wait.

Put this one your list if you are a fan of vampire films and/or martial arts films. This one gives you the best of both worlds!

DVD Review: DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK (2009)

DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK wins two awards from me. First off, it wins my award for best title ever! Second off, it wins my most unexpectedly enjoyable film of the year. Not to say I didn't think I would like this film, but I just really didn't know much about it and being the Soska Sisters first feature film, I had my concerns. Well, you would never know this was a first feature from the directors. I enjoyed this film more than I thought I would for sure.   For those that aren't familiar with this film, here is the basic plot courtesy of imdb.com:

Set in beautiful Vancouver, four friends set out on an everyday errand and end up in a fight for their lives when they discover the body of a dead hooker left in their trunk. Lead by a sexy, impulsive Badass, her distant Geek twin sister, their bible thumping, Jesus loving Goody Two Shoes friend, and a chaotic, rock star Junkie pal, the group has to put aside their differences to dispose of the body before they're next. Thrown into their own personal purgatory, they face off against persistent police, a sleazy motel manager, chainsaw wielding triads, and a brutal serial killer. All the while they are followed by a mysterious Cowboy Pimp who wants to claim the corpse for his own. Will they uncover the truth behind the body and be able to stand up to their demons? Buckle up and get ready for the ride of your life filled with gun fights, extreme violence, blood, guts, gore, and goats.

I really wasn't sure what I was getting into when I put this film into my DVD player. Was it really a Horror film? Was it a drama or suspense film? Was it a dark comedy? The answer to those questions is YES, YES, and YES.   It is all those things plus a couple more genre's thrown in for good measure.

The film is shot very well with some cool camera angles and shots. The acting in this movie is superb for a low budget, independent film like this, especially from the Soska Sisters, who star in the film in addition to both writing and directing the film. They are obviously just as good and comfortable in front of the camera as they are behind it.   The other acting job that really stuck out to me was that of C.J. Wallis playing the character of the goody two shoes, ultra religious kid.    He gave a very funny performance and provided a lot of comic relief among the blood and violence.

As I stated before, it is very hard to categorize this film. It definitely has a lot of dark comedy elements to it, and reminded me a bit of the (very underrated film in my opinion) VERY BAD THINGS.   But don't worry, you gore hounds will have something to enjoy as well, as there is a LOT of blood in this film and some crazy scenes involving a dismembered arm and someone losing an eyeball.   That is all I will say about those things, as I don't want to spoil all the surprises for you.

Check out this movie as soon as you can.   It looks like that right now only a Region 2 DVD is available from Amazon.co.uk, but the film will be getting a Region 1 DVD release from IFC Midnight this coming January!

I just got the new EVIL DEAD 2 Blu-ray for only $10 at my local Walmart Supercenter store!

I just found the new EVIL DEAD 2 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray at my local Walmart for only $10!! What a crazy price! I checked yesterday for the EVIL DEAD Blu-ray at my local Best Buy store and they don't even have it in the store to buy, you can only get it on their website (Best Buy has a horrible selection of Horror DVD's these days by the way). I don't usually buy DVD's at Walmart but when I was passing by that section yesterday, I thought, what the heck, won't hurt to check and see if they happen to have it for sale, and sure enough, this is what I saw when I checked the Blu-ray section! I couldn't believe this brand new Blu-ray was only $10! Needless to say I grabbed it up quick!! Check your local Walmart stores if you are looking for this new Blu-ray edition of one of the greatest Horror films EVER in my opinion!!

DVD Review: HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN (2011)

I had heard nothing but good things about HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN. In fact, I had heard so much good stuff about it, I was afraid that by the time I got to watch it, it would be over hyped and would be somewhat of a letdown for me. Luckily, everything good you have heard about this film is spot on and I was not let down in the least. This was one of the most enjoyable films I have seen in a long time! Here is the basic plot synopsis courtesy of the Magnet Releasing website:

A train pulls into the station – it’s the end of the line. A hobo jumps from a freight car hoping for a fresh start in a new city. Instead, he finds himself trapped in an urban hell. This is a world where criminals rule the streets and Drake, the city’s crime boss, reigns supreme alongside his sadistic murderous sons, Slick & Ivan. Amidst the chaos, the hobo comes across a pawn shop window displaying a secondhand lawn mower. He dreams of making the city a beautiful place and starting a new life for himself. But as the brutality continues to rage around him, he notices a shotgun hanging above the lawn mower... Quickly, he realizes the only way to make a difference in this town is with that gun in his hand and two shells in its chamber...

I knew I was going to love this film from the very opening sequence, which was a nice throwback to the grindhouse films of the 70's. In fact, this entire film is one love letter to the grindhouse era. Rutger Hauer does a tremendous job portraying the Hobo, in fact, this could be Hauer's finest acting job to date.

From a technical standpoint, the film is perfectly done to fit in it's grindhouse tone. One thing that really stuck out to me was the use of color in this film. Sometimes the entire scene would be washed with a dark blue color, only to be interrupted by the spray of bright red blood. The film contains some over the top gore, including a great beheading and, of course, many wounds caused by the Hobo's shotgun.

One this this film does not do is hold back anything....nothing and no one is safe. Not even women and children are safe in this film, and the scene where a maniac takes a flam thrower to a school bus full of kids is just one instance that proves this. The film is very brutal, in every since of the word, but that just makes you cheer for the Hobo that much more. You really want to see him bring this city to justice.

It's not often that a director hits a home run with his first feature film, but Eisener has done just that with HOBO....I look forward to his future films. Keep an eye on this guy, he could be the next great up and coming horror director!

There’s something extremely unnerving about kids who are set to bring about the end of the world, especially when they are not even teenagers yet. Obviously, this sense of foreboding is due in part to the common belief about the ‘innocence of childhood’. This is supposed to be a time of exploration, wonderment, and growth...not dread, brimstone, and fire. The Asylum’s 11/11/11 is a nifty jaunt into this child-terror territory.

If you are not familiar with 11/11/11, here is the plot synopsis courtesy of imdb.com:

Jack and Melissa are frightened by their son's bizarre and violent behavior; they soon learn that he is the gateway to the Apocalypse, and it will happen on his birthday, 11-11-11.

First off, let me start this review by giving The Asylum a nod of congrats. I have butchered a few of their movies in the past, but am happy to report 11/11/11 delivers an entertaining and memorable trip. This is not a perfect movie, but it is well done and definitely worth checking out.

One aspect of the film that really grabbed me early on is the dark tone of the film. You can tell pretty much from the onset that nothing good is going to happen here. As the family moves into their new home and the slightly-different neighbors start to show up, you get a sense that things are going to go downhill quickly. And boy, do they. Half of what makes this movie work is how uncomfortable you feel as you watch the family deal with these quirky people.

The acting is impressive as well. Previous Asylum films have really lacked in this department, but I have to admit that the cast of 11/11/11 does an excellent job. The special effects are also top notch, with several nice blood splatters and even a freaky levitation scene.

But as good as the movie is, it does have some downsides as well. For one thing, the story is never fully developed. We do not know exactly what will happen (to mankind) if the Devil is reborn in the boy. Nor are we told what exactly happened at the beginning of the movie (there is a massacre...but it never explains who it was that was killed or why).

Another downfall is the lack of explanation as to who the neighbors really are and how they know who Nathan (the boy) is. These actually don’t hurt the story too badly while you’re watching the movie, but the questions will definitely arise as the credits roll.

Otherwise, 11/11/11 is an entertaining flick and one that I’m glad I watched BEFORE today (which is Friday, 11/11/2011). I especially liked the very ending of this movie, as it leaves you with a sense of awe and dread. I won’t give it away, so you can check it out for yourself. Definitely give this one a look.

I just wanted to give you heads up that I will be undergoing nose surgery in just a few hours!! Apparently I have a septum that has deviated from the norm. We are going to set him straight today. Not a major surgery by any means, but it does mean I will probably not feel like doing much for the next few days except laying in bed. But who knows, it might go perfectly and I will feel fine tomorrow, you never know. But just in case you don't see a new post for a few days, I wanted to let you know why. Well, wish me luck....and pray my doctor is not this guy:

Blu-ray Review: FRANKENHOOKER (1990)

I love the 80's horror films. That is my favorite era of horror films. While technically this is not an 80's movie since it's production date is listed as 1990, to me, FRANKENHOOKER is an 80's horror film in every aspect.   Cheesy dialog....check. Bad acting....check. Horrible hair and clothes.....check!
Before I go on with the review, here is the basic plot for those that aren't familiar with it, from the Synapse films website:

When Jeffrey Franken’s fiancée is chopped to pieces by the blades of a remote-controlled lawnmower, he uses his dubious medical knowledge to try to bring her back to life. He reassembles his beloved Elizabeth using the body parts of New York City’s finest prostitutes, and resurrects her during a heavy lightning storm. Unfortunately for Jeffrey, his dear Elizabeth’s brain is scrambled and she runs amok on 42^nd Street, turning tricks and bringing high-voltage death to her customers!

I had never seen FRANKENHOOKER until watching it just the other night. This is one of those films that I have always known about, but just never have seen. I remember as a kid in Jr. High going to the video store and always seeing the case for FRANKENHOOKER. I never figured my Mom and Dad would let me rent a movie with the word "hooker" in the title, so I never even bothered to try renting this one.
Well, it's 20 years later and I can't get in trouble from Mom and Dad for watching FRANKENHOOKER now....although I did have to deal with "the look" and a roll of the eyes from my wife when she saw the case to the movie I was watching! HA! I'm used to that though, so I can deal with it.

FRANKENHOOKER is a blast! It's exactly what you think it is going to be based on the name and by looking at the pics on the back of the case.    Some, no,...most ALL of the acting is pretty bad, but that's is part of the fun of this film. Check out the ridiculously bad acting skills of the actor that plays Zorro, the main pimp in the film.   He steals each scene he is in with his acting skills, or lack thereof.

So you can't go into this film expecting Oscar worthy acting, but you will get a fun film with some cool effects. The main character, Jeffrey, finds or invents some sort of serum that keeps body parts alive. At one point in the film, all the body parts he is keeping get mixed up and morph into each other, turning into weird body part creature things. They are crazy looking and were my favorite part of the film, aside from Frankenhooker herself, of course.

This is a great, fun film that I would recommend to all of you that are fans of campy, 80's horror films.

Movie review: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 (2011)

I went and saw PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 last week and I have had to do some thinking before I just threw my review together. This wasn't a movie I just loved so much I had to tell everyone about it, nor was it a movie I just hated so much I felt the need to immediately post about it and let people know about it.   I ended up with mixed feelings about the film. Overall, it was good and it is definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of the previous two films. Here is the brief plot synopsis of the 3rd film from imdb.com:

In 1988, young sisters Katie and Kristi befriend an invisible entity who resides in their home.

HA! I said it was brief plot synopsis, didn't I! Well, that pretty much sums up the plot, you know from seeing the other 2 films what the movie is about basically.   The film starts off kinda slow, but I remember the other 2 films doing that too. Only small stuff happens at first, then it just gets crazier and crazier as the movie goes on.

I was afraid at first this movie was going to be just like the other two....when I saw the first door move by itself. I thought to my self that we have seen this before, and was afraid we were just in for a retread of the past two films.   Well, with good and bad results, this was not a just a retread of the past two films. PA3 amped it up a bit and went well above and beyond the story of the first 2 films.   This had mixed results for me.

I knew this film was going to be different when I saw a sheet with what looked like a small child under it go into the kitchen where the baby sitter was sitting....but when the babysitter turned around, the sheet just fell to the ground as it nothing was under it at all. I knew then that we were going to see more of the physical presence of the demon that was haunting the house.

The filmmakers also introduced a new camera technique that worked quite well.   The Dad puts the camera on an old oscillating fan, letting him scan two rooms with one camera. This was a cool idea and led to some great scenes, as just as you think you are about to see something in one room, the camera then cuts away as it pans to the next room. This creates a very suspenseful aspect for us the viewers.

One thing that I didn't quite like about the film was the introduction of the coven of witches with has something to do with the demon in the house, but the film never quite explains as to what they are doing and how they are involved.   I don't want to say much about this, as I don't want to totally ruin it for you if you haven't seen it yet, but this move seemed a little over the top to me.

The film does contains some of the bigger scares found in any of the 3 films. Kudos to the filmmaker for making this film goer literally jump in his seat...multiple times!

I think this movie must be seen in a theater to really enjoy it. I have seen the other 2 films both in the theater and they are so much fun when sitting in a crowd and witnessing people's reactions to the film.   PA3 probably got the best reactions for sure, and I went on a weeknight with in a theater that was probably only 1/3 full. Yet we had some group of girls around us that screamed at the top of their lungs at 2 or 3 points in the film.   This really helps the experience of watching these films I think.

Overall, I would recommend this for sure if you are a fan of the other 2 films. This is a prequel, so it is good to get some back story on Katie and Kristi to see how all this started.

When I went to see PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 this last week, I was blown away by this crazy trailer for the film THE DEVIL INSIDE. Here is the basic plot from imdb.com:

In Italy, a woman becomes involved in a series of unauthorized exorcisms during her mission to discover what happened to her mother, who allegedly murdered three people during her own exorcism.

Check out the trailer...I think this could be one hell of a ride! THE DEVIL INSIDE is scheduled to hit theaters Janurary 6th, 2012.

I hope you all had a great Halloween night!! I had a great time walking around with the kiddos trick-or-treating! I am worn out (and under the weather..again!! Ugh), so I am headed to bed. I will get back to regular postings in the next day or so.

I apologize for the lack of posts lately, this is a very busy time of year for me! I love the week leading up to Halloween, and all the festivities, but it has been keeping me very busy. In fact, I haven't even found time to carve a pumpkin this year! I think this will be the first Halloween I haven't carved a pumpkin since I can remember!

Are you watching AMERICAN HORROR STORY? If not, you should be.....

I gotta make this post quick....AMERICAN HORROR STORY starts in about 20 minutes!! If you are not watching this TV show, you are really missing out. The show is about a family of three that move into a house that has a very storied past. Basically the house is haunted and the family is finding this out first hand.
This a remarkable show, one of my favorites on TV right now. The acting and cinematography are great, and it looks to have a much higher production value than most TV shows these days. The show is really weird and I described it to someone today as this generation's TWIN PEAKS, except with more of a horror element to it.
Did I mention there is some crazy demon/ghost thing that lives in the basement of the house? I am hoping that element is explored more in future episodes. Tonight is episode 3 and I can't wait!

DVD Review: EYES IN THE DARK (2010)

WOW...it’s been a while since I have run across a movie that blows its DVD cover away. What I mean is that many movies have awesome DVD covers but end up sucking, which is a huge letdown. But there are a few movies out there that are awesome, even though their DVD covers are lacking. EYES IN THE DARK is one of those films with a lackluster DVD case, but it’s a movie you must watch!!

In case you are not familiar with EYES IN THE DARK, here is the synopsis courtesy of the DVD case:

A group of college co-eds take a trip to a mountain lodge looking for relaxation, beer, and maybe a dip in the hot tub. But when they stumble on clues about an ancient legend, they quickly find themselves fighting for their lives. Will they be able to escape this unspeakable evil? And are they the only ones who have ever crossed its path? Shot in hand-held POV style in a remote area of the Washington State Cascade foothills, EYES IN THE DARK shows there’s no terror worse than our own fear of the unknown.

Based on its cover, I didn’t know what to expect before I watched this film. The graphics sorta portray the movie as an alien-feature, but the synopsis is so vague as to not give anything away. But I am very glad I didn’t judge this movie on its cover. EYES IN THE DARK is a terror-filled excursion into darkness!

I can’t say anything specific about the plot because I don’t want to give anything away. But needless to say, it’s really good. It’s well thought-out and smart, although I can’t say it’s anything outlandishly original.

What makes this film so good, though, is the way the terror is built up. There’s one scene in particular that made my skin crawl. A group of park rangers is listening to another group of rangers converse over walkie-talkies. When the rangers on the other end of the line encounter the evil, all hell breaks loose...and it’s some of the most chilling background massacre sounds I’ve ever heard!!

The special effects and gore in EYES IN THE DARK are extremely well done as well. The titular eyes are perfect and scary as all hell!! I got chills the first time I saw them. Granted, they’re probably not very high-tech. But as a medium for frights, they’re perfect. And the gore is great as well, although we don’t get to see as much as I would have liked.

All in all, EYES IN THE DARK is what I would classify as a “Must See Immediately” film. Check this one out for sure, as soon as you can. But be ready to lose some sleep afterwards...

Movie review: THE THING (2011)

I got a chance to check out THE THING prequel the other night, and I am so glad that I did. You all need to check this one out asap, especially if you are a fan of John Carpenter's 1982 film.
Here is the basic plot of THE THING prequel from imdb.com:

At an Antarctica research site, the discovery of an alien craft leads to a confrontation between graduate student Kate Lloyd and scientist Dr. Sander Halvorson. While Dr. Halvorson keeps to his research, Kate partners with Sam Carter, a helicopter pilot, to pursue the alien life form.

The movie is a prequel to Carpenter's film of the same name, and sets up his version perfectly. The film does an excellent job of re-creating the sets and overall feel of Carpenter's film.   The acting in this film is great, the music is good, and of course, the gore is good. The main difference with this film is that almost all of the effects are CGI, rather than practical effects.   Overall the effects look pretty good but there were one or two shots that looked very fake and were a little distracting to me, but overall they were good. Some were very gruesome in fact, including a monster made of two people that were kinda "morphed" together....very disturbing!!

Go out and support horror in the theater! Check this one out, I think you will really enjoy it!

DVD Review: AMERICAN GRINDHOUSE and NIGHTMARES IN RED, WHITE, AND BLUE double feature

I recently had the chance to check out a great set of documentaries from Lorber Films. This was a 2 disc set consisting of the films AMERICAN GRINDHOUSE and NIGHTMARES IN RED, WHITE, AND BLUE. Here are they synopsis' for each film from imdb.com:

AMERICAN GRINDHOUSE:
This documentary explores the hidden history of the American Exploitation Film. The movie digs deep into this often overlooked category of U.S. cinema and unearths the shameless and occasionally shocking origins of this popular entertainment

NIGHTMARES IN RED, WHITE, AND BLUE:
An exploration of the appeal of horror films, with interviews of many legendary directors in the genre.

Well, that is a pretty straightforward synopsis, but that is really all you need to know.   These films are simple, but very detailed at the same time. I love documentaries about film, especially horror films, and I have seen quite a few. These two films are easily the best horror documentaries I have ever seen. AMERICAN GRINDHOUSE deals with more of the exploitation films than the pure horror films, and contains interviews with some of the top names in the business including John Landis, Joe Dante, Fred Olen Ray, and Herschell Gordon Lewis.   NIGHTMARES IN RED, WHITE, AND BLUE focus' more on the true horror film including all the mainstream, well known films, to some you might not of ever heard of. I learned about a film called ONE DARK NIGHT that I have never even heard of before. A scene from that film looked so good that I immediately went and bought a copy off of ebay. I'm sure there might be some references to films you might not know about either.

One thing that really sets these films apart from other horror docs is the production value. These movies look excellent with animated menus and stats when put up on screen. Also, unlike some other horror docs that just talk about a film and maybe show you a screen shot of that film, both of these films actually show you footage and scenes from the films they are discussing. This is a huge thing that has really bugged me in the past with some horror docs. Talking about the films is good, but to actually see the scene they are discussing is a huge help.

These film are so much fun, I especially liked NIGHTMARES IN RED, WHITE, AND BLUE because it was like seeing a "greatest hits" ,so to speak, of all my favorite horror films.    These are must have films in my opinion and while they are available separately, you can get them together in a double feature set that is a great value for these 2 excellent films.

I am a big fan of this film (see my review here) and I think you will be to. For those that don't know about JUNKFOOD HORRORFEST, here is the basic premise from the Chemical Burn Entertainment website:

Scarlet Fry takes you on the thrill of your life with: Blood Thirsty Cannibals, Satanic Zombies, Demented Nurses, Junkie Serial Killers, Freaky Perverts and More! This Blood Drenched Deluxe Horrorfest isn’t for the weak at heart. A drug dealer has made his last deal after he decides to hand a junkie serial killer (Calico Cooper) some bad junk. This junk is, in fact, a video tape entitled "Junkfood Horrorfest." This horror anthology, hosted by Scarlet Fry, features six twisted tales that kick off when the junkie and her new found friend decide to watch the tape. This is a great DVD, and you actually get 3 movies on one disc! Pretty cool! Read below for rules and instructions on entering the contest.
