DVD Review: BEREAVEMENT (2010)

BEREAVEMENT
Written & Directed by:  Stevan Mena
Distributed by: Anchor Bay Entertainment

I watched the film BEREAVEMENT last night and all I can say is....WOW!   This movie is intense!  I had no clue what to expect from this film.  I knew nothing about it and had not even seen a trailer for it.  I went into it after just reading the DVD back cover to be honest, I wasn't expecting much.  I expected this to be another run of the mill, straight to DVD killer flicks, just like all the rest.  Well I was put in my place last night by this film.  BEREAVEMENT made me eat those words and proved that a film doesn't have to a be a huge blockbuster in the theater to be a good..no, GREAT horror film! Before I go any further, here is the basic plot from the Anchor Bay website:

In 1989, a 6-year-old boy is lured into the vehicle of a stranger. The stranger is a serial killer with a tendency of butchering teenage girls. In the basement of a rural Pennsylvania slaughterhouse, he will teach the boy everything he knows. Five years later, teen Allison (Alexandria Daddario of Hall Pass) comes to live with her uncle (Michael Biehn of The Terminator) following her parents’ death. In time, she will discover the boy and his madman mentor. And they will all be plunged into an unimaginable evil from which there may be no escape. Nolan Gerard Funk (Deadgirl), Brett Rickaby (The Crazies), Valentina de Angelis (“Gossip Girl”) and John Savage (The Deer Hunter) co-star in this graphic and acclaimed shocker from writer/director Stevan Mena about family, torment, and the nightmare absolution that is BEREAVEMENT.

The movie starts off strong and never lets go.   The acting in this film is amazing, especially from all the girls who are tied up and tortured by the crazed madman.  Their screams of terror sound frighteningly real and they remarkably convey a felling of helplessness and fright.   You really feel for these girls, as the torture scenes are very graphic and extremely well done, even down to the sound effects of knives ripping through clothing and flesh.   One scene in particular was when the killer caught a girl who was trying to escape and when he did, he put her on a huge meat hook...but he hung here there by putting the hook through her lower thigh area, thus making her hang upside down while squirming and shrieking in pain.  This scene was so well done, that I literally squirmed in my seat and looked away for a few seconds just to catch my breath.  Most things don't bother me too much, as I know they are fake, but the way this was done with such realism, it made me squirm for sure.  And please don't this is another "torture" film like HOSTEL, or the SAW films.  While the film does have an element of that, BEREAVEMENT is much more than that.  There is much more substance to this film than just the torture and killing.
The movie is scary for sure, but more than anything it is very disturbing.  The fact that the killer kidnapped this 6 year old boy to teach him the "tricks of the trade" is very disturbing, and seeing the boy have to witness these brutal murders brought a sinking feeling to my stomach.   The fact that this could all actually happen makes it that much worse to me.  Slasher flicks usually don't bother me, as they are so absurd we know they could never happen, but this could happen.  This HAS happened. People kidnap and people kill....and being thrown in to such a tremendously realistic view of these real life horrors was very effective.

Writer/Director Stevan Mena has created what should be considered one of the finest modern day horror films, at least in this reviewer's opinion.   Oh, and I haven't even mentioned the ending....that is something you will have to see for yourself, but was one of the best parts of the film for sure.

Beautifully shot and well crafted overall, this is a must have for all you horror fans. Do not miss this one.  BEREAVEMENT is out now on DVD and Blu-ray and contains the following special features:

* The Making of Bereavement

Book Review: THE BRAIN EATER'S BIBLE by Pat Kilbane

THE BRAIN EATER'S BIBLE
Written by:  J.D. McGhoul/Pat Kilbane
Published by Mythodrome, Inc.

Just like THE Bible helps us regular humans by giving us instructions on how to live our lives, THE BRAIN EATER'S BIBLE does exactly the same, but for those of the un-dead variety.  Yes, if you are a zombie, newly turned or almost completely rotted away, you need to make sure you have a copy of this book and study it daily.

I have read a lot of zombie manuals, but most are written for us humans about how to defend ourselves against the zombies once the zombie apocalypse occurs.   This book is exactly opposite, this is a humorous book written for the zombies, to help them go about their "lives" and defend themselves from us.

The book covers a variety of topics including, in the early parts of the book, some general information on what to expect physically, now that you have turned into a zombie.   This section is called "Know Your Body" and is a great reference to let you know about all the changes your body will be going through.   From there, the book moves on to tell you how to survive as a zombie, including how to hunt for brains.   A good example on the detailed info in this book is a section about hunting for brains.  The book talks about "pack hunting" and while you normally would think that would be a no-brainer  (pun intended), here we get a list of not just the pros of pack hunting, but also the cons.  You know in a pack there are strength in numbers, but then at the same time, when a pack attacks somebody, you have far less food per zombie!  Also, it's hard to sneak up on your prey if you are in a giant mob, so you sacrifice the stealth factor.  I had never really thought about these things, but it makes perfect sense.

The book also has an extensive chapter on weaponry that humans will use against you, including info on all sorts of firearms, to the more common hand-held items and blunt objects.   If you are a zombie, you can not afford to not have this info.

One impressive thing about this book is the pictures.  The team behind this book actually used real makeup effects and created exclusive zombies to use in the pictures throughout this book.   Most books like this are just illustrated, but here you get to see real pics of zombies, which is a really neat and unique, and really sets this book apart from other similar resources.

This book is a must have for sure, but for those of you with an iPad, there is also a cool companion app for you to download which includes the following:

· The 160-page full-color e-book
· 18 videos from zombie author J.D. McGhoul, giving tips on everything from self-esteem to self-defense.
· An interactive 3D model of the skull, showing where to best access the brain.
· Hundreds of zoomable and interactive photos illustrating zombie science, psychology and survival techniques.
· Scrollable zombie martial arts sequences.
· Animated schematics showing how to ambush human prey.
· McGhoul’s “notebook entries” with bonus commentary for almost every page of the book.
· Animations of the zombie virus attacking human cells

The app is only $4.99  (or you can get the light, sampler version for FREE to try it out).

The app and the book are must haves for any horror fan!   The Hardcover book is currently selling for only $15.01 from Amazon!  DO NOT pass this one up.  This is book everybody needs to have in their reference library.  Even if you are not a zombie now, you will be someday.  There is no time like the present to read up and prepare yourself for that day.

Blu-ray Review: THE EXTERMINATOR (1980)

THE EXTERMINATOR
Written and Directed by:   James Glickenhaus
Distributed by:  Synapse films

Synapse films is quickly becoming my #1 favorite film distributor.  They are putting out some great stuff lately, and they will soon be releasing a classic from the 1980's entitled, THE EXTERMINATOR. Here is the basic plot synopsis from the Synapse films website:

The man they pushed too far is coming for you–in high-def! The exploitation revenge classic THE EXTERMINATOR burns onto Blu-ray in a newly re-mastered “director’s cut” version! Christopher George, Robert Ginty and Samantha Eggar star in The Exterminator, James Glickenhaus’ explosive story of Vietnam vet John Eastland (Ginty), a man who launches a bloody vendetta against the New York underworld when his best friend is brutally beaten by a vicious street gang. Eastland becomes a vigilante hero to the public, but to police The Exterminator is a psychopath capable of dangerously undermining an entire government administration.

THE EXTERMINATOR came out in 1980.....I remember as a kid seeing this film on the shelves of my local video store, but I never did rent it for some reason.  Lucky for us, the great folks at Synapse films have released the film on an awesome Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.   The film looks crystal clear on the Blu-ray that I watched.  If it weren't for the outdated cars, clothes, and hairstyles, you would think this movie was just filmed.   The transfer to Blu-ray is quite impressive.

The film opens up with a great Vietnam war scene, including a scene of our hero, Vietnam vet John Eastland, in a P.O.W. camp that ends with one of the most graphic throat cutting scenes I have ever witnessed.  The scene literally made my jaw drop.   This effect must be seen to be believed, and I have to admit I hit the rewind button a couple of times on this one....very well done, even by today's measures, but for 1980....well, it was ahead of it's time for sure!  Eastland is a very nice person you can tell, but after witnessing his best friend get beat up so bad, he begins to do some very bad things. He says at one point to his hospitalized friend "that going after the gang of thugs that did this was just like being back in Vietnam....it didn't matter if it was right or wrong, he just felt like he had to do it."  And that he does...one by one he picks off the thugs that hurt his friend so badly, then continues his killing spree as he takes it upon himself to clean the streets of any and all lowlifes and criminals that he comes across.

This is an awesome revenge flick that really encompasses the feel of an 80's horror movie.  This is one you will definitely want to check out again if you saw it years ago, or discover for the first time like I did.  Either way, you will definitely want to add this to your collection.

THE EXTERMINATOR is set for release on September 13.  Special Features/Extras include:

* The Original Directors Cut Featuring More Gore and Violence
* Newly Restored Original Stereo Soundtrack Mix
* Audio Commentary with Director James Glickenhaus
* Theatrical Trailer and Television Spots (HD)

Check out the creepy trailer for the upcoming film, THE WOMAN IN BLACK

Thanks to my buddy Caleb for bringing this one to my attention....I guess I hadn't given THE WOMAN IN BLACK much thought since it stars Harry Potter, a.k.a, Daniel Radcliffe.  My mistake, because this looks really good and Daniel Radcliffe looks like he could be a really cool actor.   Here is the basic plot from imdb.com:

A young lawyer travels to a remote village to organize a recently deceased client's papers, where he discovers the ghost of a scorned woman set on vengeance.

Check this trailer out, this looks like it could be a really good, creepy film!

DVD Review: TROLLHUNTER (2010)

TROLLHUNTER
Written & Directed by:  André Øvredal
Distributed by:  Magnet Releasing/Magnolia Home Entertainment

I have been dying to see this film. Ever since I first saw the trailer, I have been super excited for this one.  I have really built this one up and I was hoping I hadn't hyped it up too much and was leaving myself open for a let down.   Well, I am happy to say that after finally getting to see TROLLHUNTER, I was not let down in the least.  In fact, I would go as far as to say I was pleasantly surprised and that the film was actually better than I could have imagined. Before I go any further,
here is the basic plot synopsis from the film's official website:

The government says there’s nothing to worry about – it’s just a problem with bears making trouble in the mountains and forests of Norway. But local hunters don’t believe it – and neither do a trio of college students who want to find out the truth. Armed with a video camera, they trail a mysterious “poacher,” who wants nothing to do with them. However, their persistence lands them straight in the path of the objects of his pursuits: trolls. They soon find themselves documenting every move of this grizzled, unlikely hero – the trollhunter – risking their lives to uncover the secrets of creatures only thought to exist in fairy tales.

This is another entry into the ever so popular "found footage" genre of film.  But...unlike most of these "found footage" films, this one does not deal with ghosts or witches....this one deals with trolls.  That's right, trolls.   You can't say this isn't an original film!  I like the mixture of the "found footage" and creature feature films....not something I have seen much of, but hope to see more of.

TROLLHUNTER is basically like a bigfoot movie on crack.  The hunter is searching for the creature that he knows exists, but no one else believes is real.  Except instead of a more human sized Bigfoot, these trolls are humongous.  Like hundreds of feet tall enormous!   Now this leads to some puzzling questions for me, such as if there is a creature this big that towers above the trees, how is his presence not known?    Also, apparently trolls just come out at night.....so where does a monster this huge hide out all day?  Plot holes for sure, but don't get me wrong.  This will not effect the enjoyment of this film, it sure didn't for me anyways.

The acting in the film is excellent.  The man they got to play the Troll Hunter was especially good and very believable as a sort of back woods, loner type.  The cinematography is amazing and the scenes of the Norwegian countryside are truly beautiful.   Now, about the trolls....obviously the use of CG effects are a necessity here, no way to get around that.  Luckily they CG effects are done flawlessly and blend in perfect to the surroundings.    It was also fun to learn about trolls, as I really don't know anything about them.  But did you know sunlight, or more specifically, UV rays, can make a troll either explode, or turn to stone, depending on the age of the troll (don't worry, this is explained in the film and actually makes sense upon hearing the explanation).  Both types of troll deaths are witnessed here, and I found the troll turning to stone scene especially cool!

I can honestly say this is one of the best horror films I have seen in a long time, and it has found a spot on my list of favorite horror films.  I will be watching this one again soon!

The DVD and Blu-ray is out now and contains the following special features:

* Deleted Scenes
* Improv and Bloopers
* Extended Scenes
* Visual Effects
* Behind the Scenes
* Photo Galleries
* HDNet:  A Look at Trollhunter

DVD Review: THE REEF (2010)

THE REEF
Written & Directed by:  Andrew Traucki
Distributed by:  IMAGE Entertainment

Ok, I'll be honest. I wasn't real excited about another shark movie.  I mean, the sci-fi net work has almost wore me out with the shark films lately....SHARKTOPUS, DINOSHARK, etc.  Don't get me wrong, I liked these films, but I am ready to see something else.  But THE REEF is nothing like those movies mentioned above.  THE REEF is back to a 'real' shark movie.  The only shark movies I could compare THE REEF to would be OPEN WATER and yes, even the one that started them all....JAWS.  Here is the basic premise from the Image Entertainment website:

On the beautiful but dangerous waters of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, ship delivery man Luke and four friends chart a yacht to its new owner. Along the way, their ship is torn open by sharp rocks and begins to sink, leaving the passengers with a terrifying choice: stay on board with slim hope of rescue, or swim twelve miles to the nearest island… through shark-infested waters. When they enter the water, an unstoppable, relentless Great White immediately follows their trail for a white-knuckle chase that will fill the waters with blood! From the director of the acclaimed monster hit Black Water comes a pulse-pounding, visually stunning thriller that never lets go until the final, heart-stopping scream!

Now don't get me wrong, this movie was no JAWS....but then, can any movie live up to that masterpiece?  I highly doubt it and it is probably unfair to compare a shark movie of today with that classic film.  But I will say this.....THE REEF gets awfully close.  In fact, I would say this is the most enjoyable shark film I have seen since watching the JAWS films.

The acting in this film was superb, not a bad performance in the bunch, which is quite a rarity in most films these days.  The women were particularly good, giving performances where they looked and acted so scared, you wondered if the director told them they would be in the water with real sharks!  Oh yeah, did I mention they used REAL sharks for this film!  That's right, no CG sharks here..this is the real thing....and that shark is HUGE!

THE REEF clocks in at a good time of 94 minutes...short enough that all the action is packed in tight leaving little to no slow or dull parts of the film.  That is one thing I really noticed about this film....I was entertained the entire time.    It hooked me in from the start and never let go until the end.  If I had to sum up THE REEF in one word it would be...intense.  My wife watched this movie with me (a rarity for sure, since she hates horror films) and she said the entire time her muscles were tensed up.  That is a sign of a great terror/horror film in my opinion!

Check this one out for sure!  THE REEF is available now on DVD and Blu-ray from Image Entertainment.

Check out this cool clip of the upcoming film, EVIDENCE....

A couple of weeks ago I posted the trailer to a film coming out sometime in early 2012 called, EVIDENCE (see original post HERE).   Well, the writer and producer of the film sent me a short clip to share with all my readers!
It is only about 30 seconds long, but it is a good example of the terror and intensity we can expect from this film.  I am really looking forward to this one!   Turn the lights down, and the speakers up and check out the first clip by clicking below.

WORST DEATH SCENE EVER....thanks FINAL DESTINATION 5!!

I just got home from watching FINAL DESTINATION 5, and I am happy to report that the filmmakers are not running out of ideas, and don't look to anytime soon.  In one word, this movie was INTENSE!!
I know a lot of horror fans are tired of these films, but I love 'em.  They are fun movies that even though follow the same basic story line, differ enough for each one to still entertain you.   And while some thought part 4 was a weak entry into the series, don't let that keep you from seeing this latest installment.

I have always considered part 2 my favorite of the FD films, but I think I can say that this one might have taken the lead as my favorite.   Now we all know about the kills, and they are crazier than ever in part 5, but this film also throws some new twists and curves into the mix.  Mainly the fact that now you can save yourself by killing someone else...basically, giving up someone to death to take your place.  And the twist ending is just awesome....very well done.  I wont say to much as I don't want to give anything away, but do yourself a favor and go check this out.

Another great thing was the 3D...I know some people hate the new 3D craze, but I love it.  It just adds a depth of realism to films that (when used correctly and in the right kind of film) can be a lot of fun.  This is a great film for 3D and takes advantage of it in every way.

Any horror film that effects me after I leave the theater I know has done a good job. And this one did just that....I drove home extra slow and was extra cautious about everything around me. You never know when an accident could strike!

Also...last thing...if you are a gymnast...DO NOT SEE THIS FILM.   You will never get on another pair of parallel bars again.   This was one of, if not THE worst death scene I have ever seen.  I am still cringing from that one....in fact, I think I pulled a muscle in my back from when I tensed up seeing that scene.  Maybe I should go to the spa for some acupuncture to help my back.....wait...no, scratch that, bad idea.  I think I will just sit in the middle of my room with the door shut and windows locked....with a mattress over my head.

DVD Review: LEGION OF THE DEAD (2005)

-------------Review by contributing writer Scott Baker------------------

LEGION OF THE DEAD
Directed by:  Paul Bales
Distributed by:  The Asylum Home Entertainment

I always get excited when I see “...of the Dead” in a title. That phrase brings about an almost instantaneous euphoria, a sort of hazy state that makes my head swim. Sure, I know it’s probably odd to be so infatuated with a simple set of words. But as I’ve mentioned numerous times before, I Love Zombie Movies.  Well, I guess I should actually add something to that statement: I Love Zombie Movies...when they’re GOOD zombie movies. Unfortunately, LEGION OF THE DEAD is not a title that will go into the GOOD Zombie Movie category for me.
If you’re not familiar with the film, here is the the (very) brief synopsis courtesy of the The Asylum:

When the mummified remains of an evil Egyptian queen are brought back to life, she resurrects an army of living dead to help fulfill the prophecy that promises her all the powers of the Underworld.

LEGION OF THE DEAD is actually a decent attempt at making a good zombie flick, but it never quite comes all together. I like the premise: an ancient Egyptian “witch” banished across The Great Water (i.e. the ocean) winds up here on American soil. Who is to say that didn’t actually happen? I mean, as they mention in the film, look at the similarities between the Mayan pyramids when compared to the Egyptians. Coincidence? I don’t personally think so.

But sadly, a good concept cannot carry a whole movie. The acting in LEGION OF THE DEAD is atrocious, the special effects are ho-hum at the least, and the camerawork leaves a lot to be desired. In short, the production value of this film is nill. This is a shame because I think the script has/had a lot of potential.

Even so, the scriptwriters need to work on their dialogue. Much of what is spoken comes across as campy and sometimes even dumb. And when the cast is not speaking, the action isn’t much to write home about either. The only ‘dead’ you get to see are a few reanimated mummies, which to me are NOT technically zombies. I guess I might have misunderstood the title after all.

I wanted very much to like this movie because a title like LEGION OF THE DEAD definitely makes it sound like you’re going to see scads and scads of zombies, mummies, vampires, or something unnatural. But instead, I got a few mummies, no suspense, frights, or thrills, and an unenjoyable 90 minutes that crept along slower than an injured snail. I would definitely give this one a pass.

NOTE FROM ZOMBIE HAYES:  Scott, say it ain't so!  The trailer for this film looks awesome!  I normally trust ya, but I'm definitely going to give this a watch to see for myself.  Hopefully, you won't be telling me "I told you so" soon!!   Has anyone else seen this film?  Do you agree with Scott's review....please leave some comments and discuss!

Fight as Freddy Krueger in the new Mortal Kombat Game!!

I am not a big gamer anymore (ever since my original Xbox died on me), so this might be old news to most of you out there.  I just heard about this last week, and was reminded about it by a buddy at work today.   In the new MORTAL KOMBAT game for the Xbox 360 and PS3, you can actually play (via character download) as the one and only, Freddy Krueger!!!  Check out the trailer by clicking the link below to see some of the gameplay.  This looks really cool and I have to wonder if they will bring other horror icons into the Mortal Kombat world....

Check out the crazy trailer for the Japanese Zombie film, Z108

I am a huge fan of Japanese horror films.  It seems like the Japanese really turn it up a notch when it comes to violence and gore in their films.  Therefore, I am super excited about a new film called ZOMBIE 108, or Z108 for short.    I found this while searching one of my favorite horror sites: http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com

Check out the awesome trailer for the zombie film, BONG OF THE DEAD

Check out the trailer to what looks to be a hilarious and bloody new zombie film called, BONG OF THE DEAD.  If you are not familiar with this film, here is the basic plot from the film's official website:

When meteorites from outer space cause an all out zombie epidemic the world is left desolate with only a few survivors. Tommy and Edwin are a pair of stoner buddies who happen to survive the massive outbreak. They keep themselves occupied by growing and smoking as much pot as humanly possible! One day they discover that by using zombie brains as fertilizer, they are able to create a strange green liquid which when added to their pot seeds can grow some super weed! The problem is there are no more zombies where they live so in order for them to be able to grow more weed, they must find more zombies. Once on the road they quickly realize that perhaps their plans of simply finding and killing zombies for fertilizer is not as easy as they had anticipated. There is more blood and bud in this hilarious action comedy adventure than you have ever witnessed before.
This film gives a new meaning to the word “munchies”.

HA...ok, the premise is a little far-fetched...but what do you expect from a film called BONG OF THE DEAD!  Ha!  I think this will be a great film, and quite possibly, a cult hit in the making!  It looks to have a great mixture of comedy and zombie action  (did you see that awesome zombie killing mobile!!).

Expect a full review of the film in the next few weeks, but until then, check out the trailer and let me know what you think.

DVD Review: THE LIFE OF DEATH

THE LIFE OF DEATH
A Documentary by Kevin J. Lindenmuth

I recently had the chance to watch a great documentary called, THE LIFE OF DEATH by filmmaker, Kevin J. Lindenmuth and Brimstone Media Productions. The film is about a subject that most people don't want to talk about or deal with...the subject of death. Here is the basic premise of the film from the official website:

For most everyone (alive that is), death is something that looms far off on the horizon. And although it is an unavoidable reality the perception of it differs widely from person to person.
This documentary explores how death is perceived by an eclectic group of individuals who work in the media and how it influences (or not) how they go about their lives and their work. This includes such people as spiritual journalist David Crumm, Troma head honcho Lloyd Kaufman, Author/artist Bob Fingerman, authors Jack Ketchum (OFF SEASON) and Keith R.A. DeCandido, special effects artist Tom Sullivan (EVIL DEAD), filmmaker Scooter McCrae (SHATTER DEAD), professional Tarot Card reader Sasha Graham, "Scream Queens" Debbie Rochon and Caroline Munro (DR. PHIBES, MANIAC), along with a host of others.
Through serious, hilarious and poignant interviews, you will see how the concept of death has taken on a life of its own in the 21st Century.

I have to admit, I wasn't super excited about sitting down and watching a documentary about death.  I mean, this isn't the blood and gore type film I usually like to watch.  But I am glad I did.  This is an amazingly in-depth look into the death, or more specifically, how we as humans perceive death.

Through a number of excellent interviews with genre icons such as Lloyd Kaufman, Debbie Rochon, Tom Sullivan, Tony Timpone, and Jack Ketchum just to name a few, we get very personal answers to such questions as, "What do you think happens after you die?" and "How do you want to die?"

It is very interesting to hear all the different answers to the same questions....everyone has a different view or opinion of death, proving that we really know nothing about it.   Some of the personal stories  are very effective and are very touching and emotional.

This documentary reminded me of a class I took in college called "Death and Dying".  It was an interesting class that made people open up and talk about this subject matter that most people usually try to avoid talking about .  It is not a fun subject at all, but it is a topic that is very important to understand and be able to discuss.  This film is a good way to open the doors to discussion about death.

Blu-ray Review: THE VIOLENT KIND (2010)

THE VIOLENT KIND
Written and Directed by Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores
Distributed by Image Entertainment

THE VIOLENT KIND is not what you would expect...at least, it was nothing like what I expected.   From the looks of the DVD cover and then after watching the trailer, I expected more of an action/crime film than a true horror film.   But with elements that reminded me of THE EVIL DEAD films, and THE EXORCIST, this is most definitely a true horror movie.
Here is the basic plot synopsis from the Image Entertainment website:

Brace yourself for an unrelenting new horror classic that’s scary, rough, and willing to break all the rules! Your life will never be the same when you meet THE VIOLENT KIND, a ruthless pack of unstoppable psychopaths terrorizing the wilds of Northern California. Now they have their eyes on young Cody, the member of a notorious biker gang whose ex-girlfriend, Michelle (scream queen Tiffany Shepis), turns up hysterical, drenched in blood… and carrying a dark, terrifying secret. Unrelenting and wildly unpredictable, this acclaimed shocker from the Butcher Brothers, directors of the horror hit The Hamiltons, shocked audiences at Sundance and takes you on a wild ride you’ll never forget!

As I stated above, this movie was nothing like what I expected.  I didn't expect it to be much of a horror movie at all, but it most certainly is.   Although, it is hard to say what sub-genre of a horror film this movie would fit into.    In fact, it is really hard to describe this film at all!  I'll be honest...I don't totally understand the film.....I'm still not sure exactly what happened to Tiffany Shepis' character or what is inside her now....but maybe we are not supposed to?  Who knows?  What I do know is that none of that matters when it comes to entertainment value of this film.  I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, even if it does leave me a bit confused and wanting to know a little more about what happened to these folks.  I assume this could have been done intentionally in order to set up a sequel, and if so, that is fine by me.  I will be first in line to part 2!

While the film looks like it would be a typical biker/hostage type film, it is so much more than that.  I can't say to much, as I really don't want to give to much away, but you will witness a girl who is apparently "possessed" by....well...something, as well as some supernatural elements and even...aliens?  I will let you be the judge of that.  I could be way off here, but like I said, this film kinda leaves some things up in the air for you to decide for yourself.

The acting is superb in this film....not a bad actor in the bunch.  Joe Egender plays the leader of the "bad guys" and gives a remarkable performance.  You know he is bad, but you just can't help to like him!  The make up and effects are excellent as well.   While there is a little CG, most all of the blood and gore is made up of practical effects, and there is quite a bit of blood and gore on display here.

One last thing I want to mention about this film is the music.  I normally don't notice music too much in a film, but when I do, I know it must be good.  There is one scene in particular where there is a very disturbing thing happening on camera, but the music that starts playing is a very upbeat, light song.   The contrast of uplifting song paired with a gruesome scene of violence hasn't been used so well since the ear scene from RESERVOIR DOGS.  Kudos to the filmmakers on that awesome feat!

Overall, this is one of the better films I have seen this year.  It blew my expectations away.  Check this one out for sure!

DVD Review: EXHIBIT A (2007)

-------------Review by contributing writer Scott Baker------------------

Written and Directed by:  Dom Rotheroe
Distributed by:  Indiepix Films

EXHIBIT A  is one of THE BEST “found footage” thrillers I’ve ever seen. A bold statement to make, but certainly one that can be backed up. This film lures you in from the beginning with the promise of happy scenes and sunny days, then brutally slays those promises in one swift stroke at the end.

If you’re not familiar with EXHIBIT A, here is the basic plot from the Indiepix Films website:
Receiving a video camera for her birthday, Judith (Brittany Ashworth) is excited to document her normal teenage life: her crush on the girl next door, her annoying brother and the installation of a swimming pool in their backyard. When her father Andy (Bradley Cole) gets a brand new promotion, the family puts in a bid on their dream house. However, through her camera, Judith soon discovers her father is living a lie: the family is essentially bankrupt. As secrets are revealed and the family disintegrates under financial pressure, Andy is eventually driven to the unimaginable. Simmering with the tension of the best Hitchcock thrillers, EXHIBIT A will "trap you in a situation of unimaginable hideousness that resonates long aft er the end titles."

This film won Best UK Feature at the Raindance Film Festival and I can definitely see why: it is extremely well done and will keep you enthralled the whole time you are watching it.

The acting is superb, with Bradley Cole giving the performance of a lifetime as the father of the family, Andy King. The emotional range that Cole provides to his character is outstanding. You sympathize with his plight, while at the same time feel put off by his odd behavior. The rest of the cast is stellar as well, a talented ensemble that accents Cole’s portrayal.

The are no real special effects (gore, carnage, etc.) per se, but we do get to see the aftermath of a severe beating which is pretty impressive. Otherwise the effects are pretty sparse. This does nothing to detract from the film however.  EXHIBIT A has enough suspense and shock value without the use of a lot of visuals.
What is truly captivating about this film is the events that unfold before your eyes. I debated on whether or not to reveal the horrific events that occur at the end, and ultimately decided that I would remain silent about them. But I can almost guarantee you won’t be the same after you watch this movie.

I can still feel the sense of dread that overcame me as the credits rolled.  EXHIBIT A keeps you thinking long after you’ve finished the film and walked away. As suspected, the thoughts I’ve been having are not rosy, either.

But I am very impressed with the film and am glad I got to watch it.  EXHIBIT A is one you will want to give a look for certain.

Check out the trailer to the awsome new film, EVIDENCE!

I was recently contacted by the writer/producer of a new film called EVIDENCE asking if I could share the trailer with my readers.  I watched the trailer and decided that this was definitely worthy of a post.  This film looks gooood!   Here is the basic synopsis from imdb.com:

Ryan is making a documentary on his friend, Brett, about camping for the first time. However, once they begin camping, they discover that there is a mysterious figure that is hunting them.

This is another film documentary style film.....it looks like a film similar to THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, except this film looks like it might actually be scary!  Watch the trailer and then comment to let me know what you think.  I am very excited about this one.  I think it looks like it could be a cult classic in the making!

EVIDENCE is directed by Howie Askins and written by and stars Ryan McCoy.  The film is slated to hit theaters early next year.  This is one to definitely keep an eye on!

Lost Hitchcock film found!

Check out this awesome AP news story my buddy Cody at work found on Yahoo news:

LOS ANGELES – Alfred Hitchcock is still surprising his fans.
Film preservationists say they've found the first half of "The White Shadow," the earliest surviving feature film on which Hitchcock has a credit.

The first three reels of the six-reel film made in 1923 were discovered by the National Film Preservation Foundation at the New Zealand Film Archive.

"The White Shadow" was directed by Graham Cutts, and Hitchcock is credited as writer, assistant director, editor and art director. Hitchcock's own directing debut came two years later.

Foundation Director Annette Melville said Wednesday that the reels of "The White Shadow" were found among films donated to the archive by the family of New Zealand projectionist and collector Jack Murtagh.

No other copy of "The White Shadow" is known to exist.

The film is a melodrama about twin sisters — one good, the other evil.

This is very cool....hopefully they will find the second half someday so we can see the full film!

DVD Review: BLOODRAYNE: THE THIRD REICH (unrated version)

BLOODRAYNE:  THE THIRD REICH  (2010)
Directed by:  Uwe Boll
Distributed by:  Phase 4 Films

Last night I watched the film BLOODRAYNE:  THE THIRD REICH.  It is directed by Uwe Boll, who has garnered quite the reputation among us horror fans.....albeit, not a good reputation.  But I have to say, I really enjoyed this film.  It was fun and entertained me the entire time, which is a what a good film should!  Before I go any further with my review, here is the plot synopsis from the Phase 4 Films website:

Half-vampire, half-human, Rayne hides in the shadows slaughtering vampires and those that get in her way. In 1943 Europe, during World War II, Rayne faces her greatest foe, a growing army of undead Nazi soldiers led by Ekart Brand, a top Nazi official turned day-walker. Rayne must team up with a group of resistance fighters to defeat Brand and his vampire army before they reach Berlin to grant Hitler immortality.

I liked this film.  I really liked this film.  I know as a true, hardcore horror fan, I am not supposed to say that about any film by Uwe Boll.  It has almost become chic to immediately scoff at any film by Mr. Boll, before even giving it a chance.  But I am proud to stand up and say that I liked this movie.

I have never seen the first two BLOODRAYNE films....mainly because of the reputation of the aforementioned Mr. Boll.  But I am going to go check out those earlier installments now after seeing this third entry into the series.  One great thing about this film, is that you don't have to have seen the first two films to enjoy this one.  I could follow along fine and didn't feel like I was at any disadvantage for not having seen the first two films.

The film opens up with a great scene of a vampire attack as Rayne explains some of her families background and shows how she became the way she is today.  The film is very faced paced and brings pretty much nonstop action to the screen.  There are very few slow scenes and with only a 79 minute run time, the action is never too far away.

I was impressed with all the battle scenes as Rayne (played by the gorgeous Natassia Malthe) rips into the Nazi soldiers.  Blood flies as she brings her double sworded vengeance upon the German army.   I was impressed with the gore in this film, just one more reason to like this one. The film is shot very nice with some beautiful scenery and good cinematography.

I have checked out some other reviews online, and I seem to be in the minority here....most reviewers did not like the film.  I wonder if you took Uwe Boll's name off the film if they would see the film the same way.  I wonder if they harness a certain negative bias towards Mr. Boll's films based on some of his past films.  That is sad if that is the case, because I think they are missing out on a really enjoyable film here.  Now, the film is not a huge, big-budget blockbuster of course, but you have to understand that going into the film.  It is a fun, horror/action film with beautiful women, lots of cool battle scenes, and lots of blood.  Oh, and did I mention there is a scene of a vampire Hitler?  Whats not to love!

I encourage you to check this one out.  It is out now on DVD and Blu-ray  from Phase 4 Films.
