Guest DVD Review: THE RUINS review by Caleb Schoeppe

Welcome to the first ever Guest Review on Hayes Hudson's House of Horror! Our first guest reviewer is Caleb Schoeppe from the metal group Vessels of Wrath and the owner of Element Photography. Caleb recently watched the film THE RUINS and was kind enough to share his thoughts about the movie with us:

To start I would like to out line the plot to THE RUINS. A group of friends whose leisurely Mexican holiday takes a turn for the worse when they, along with a fellow tourist embark on a remote archaeological dig in the jungle, where something evil lives among the ruins.
I decided to give this one a good solid watching and give it a shot. Sounded like a great concept. Went and found it on On Demand, selected it, and rented it....that is about when things went down hill. Let me strike that last comment, everything went down hill about 30-45 minutes into this film. It started strong and was shaping up to be a fine horror film when these college kids are in the jungle and end up forced to stay in the ruins of a ancient Aztec/Mayan pyramid by the locals. It seems the locals fear anyone who steps on these ruins as they are cursed and may cause harm to the tribe! Now bring on the EVIL!! As darkness falls and bad things start to happen. It is at this point we are introduced to our evil killer which is...wait for it....are you ready?.... A PLANT!!! A vine that grows on the temple and eats meat!!! ARE YOU F$#KING KIDDING ME? Where are the evil Indian zombies? Where are the dreadful spirits that harvest souls for the gods? Where is anything remotely scary? The scariest part of the film are the locals who would shoot you in the head if you attempted to leave the pyramid. That part was cool. I would like someone to please inform me who lets these films get produced. If I were in charge and was approached with this script I think I may have called all my friends to make sure I was not part of some elaborate joke or something. I am tired or talking about this pile of poop. So to sum up, don't watch this movie. I can tell you that you will waste time that could have been spent on a better movie or with family. Thank you.

JENNIFER'S BODY got horrible reviews, but I still want to check it out since I missed it in the theater. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY was one of my top films of the year. Lots of people disliked it, but obviously a lot more did like it based on how well it did at the box office. I thought it was great and highly recommend it. LESBIAN VAMPIRE KILLERS (titled just VAMPIRE KILLERS for us U.S. Folk) looks like it will be a fun movie. And definitely check out VERSUS if you haven't already. The trailer does not do it justice. It is a great zombie/kung-fu flick!! Break out the Christmas money.....this is a great week for Horror DVD's!!

Check out the trailer for Adam Green's newest fright flick: FROZEN

In Adam Green's (HATCHET) newest film, Three skiers (Kevin Zegers, Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell) mistakenly end up stranded on a chairlift and are forced to make life-or-death choices that prove more perilous than staying put and freezing to death. This trailer looks great...what a scary situation to be in. Could it ever happen? Not likely, but it will be fun to see what happens if it ever did!! FROZEN is set to be released into theaters February 5, 2010. I will be there to see this one for sure. Will you?

Book Review: ZOMBIES: A RECORD OF THE YEAR OF INFECTION

This is by far one of the best Zombie books I have read in a long time. Although, there is really not that much reading to it. In fact, that is my one complaint about the book is that it is not long enough. You can easily read this cover to cover in about 30 minutes. But don't let that keep you from checking this out, because it will be some of the coolest zombie filled 30 minutes you've experienced in long time. I guess this would be considered more of a graphic novel type book than a regular novel. It is set up with beautiful illustrated zombie pictures on almost every page, with just a short paragraph or so of writing on the pages. The illustrations are the main draw here, with both Black and White, and full color drawings. The book is basically set us as a set of hand written Field Notes from a Dr. Robert Twombly. Here is the description from amazon.com:

The year is 2011, and what starts as a pervasive and inexplicable illness ends up as a zombie infestation that devastates the world's population. Taking the form of a biologist's illustrated journal found in the aftermath of the attack, this pulse-pounding, suspenseful tale of zombie apocalypse follows the narrator as he flees from city to countryside and heads north to Canada, where he hopes the undead will be slowed by the colder climate. Encountering scattered humans and scores of the infected along the way, he fills his notebook with graphic drawings of the zombies and careful observations of their behavior, along with terrifying tales of survival. This frightening new contribution to the massively popular zombie resurgence will keep fans on the edge of their seats right up to the very end.

ZOMBIES is written by Don Roff and illustrated by Chris Lane. I highly recommend this book if you are a fan of the zombie genre.

THE MASK (1961) in 3D!

While discussing Jim Carrey movies the other day at work (don't ask) someone mentioned that their favorite Jim Carrey movie was the 1994 craptastic film, THE MASK. That is by far one of my least favorite of his films, but that is another story. This discussion, which normally would have killed thousands of brain cells, actually got me thinking about another movie by the same name. 1961's THE MASK, directed by Julian Roffman, was a favorite of mine when I was a child. I picked up a VHS version of the film for two reasons. One, it said it was in 3D!! Second reason was that some lady in tight black dress with big boobs was on the cover of the VHS case. Later I would learn who this mistress of the dark was, none other than ELVIRA!

Here is the basic plot from IMDB.com:
A young archaeologist believes he is cursed by a mask that causes him to have weird nightmares and possibly to murder. Before committing suicide, he mails the mask to his psychiatrist, Dr. Barnes, who is soon plunged into the nightmare world of the mask.

I couldn't have begun to tell you what the plot was. To be honest, I don't think I ever watched it all the way through. It was black and white and to a kid, a black and white movie where actors are just talking is super boring. I knew what I wanted to see. I fast forwarded to the few scenes where the actor put the mask on and the nightmarish visions (in 3D) begun!
These were great, surreal, creepy scenes. This was the first time I ever saw a skull with eyeballs in it! The skull looked like it was coming to life! Check out the longest of the 3D scenes here...even if you don't have a pair of 3D glasses lying around (shame on you), you can still enjoy this spooky scene!

Genre legend Dan O'Bannon has died 1946-2009

I have just learned the writer/director Dan O'Bannon passed away yesterday at the age of 63. He died after a 30 year battle with Crohn's disease. O'Bannon was the Writer/Director of one of my favorite Horror movies of all time, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD. He was also a writer on LIFEFORCE, INVADERS FROM MARS, and ALIENS. He will be dearly missed.

Hershcell Gordon Lewis presents: THE CHAINSAW SALLY show!

For those that don't know who Herschell Gordon Lewis is...shame on you!! H.G. Lewis is considered the Godfather of Gore! He got this title by creating some of the goriest films that people had seen at the time of their release. He is most known for his 1963 classic BLOOD FEAST. The gore is crazy in this film, even by today's standards...I can't imagine seeing it back in 1963! Anyway, back to the subject at hand, H.G. Lewis is producing the web series THE CHAINSAW SALLY SHOW! It is a great mix of comedy and horror! Check it out at the links below!!

Check out a few more great Horror blogs I have found!

Periodically, I like to bring to my reader's attention some other great Horror Blogs that I come across. Today, there are 3 that I feel the need to bring to your attention:

First up is the DAY OF THE WOMAN blog. Blog author BJ-C presents a blog for "the Feminine side of fear". This is a great blog with wide range of topics, from Best/Worst lists, to her featured "Terrible Poster Tuesday's" where she showcases a horrible looking movie poster! Funny Stuff! Check this one often. It is cool to see a woman's take on Horror when it seems like the genre is usually more geared toward men. I love the fact that more and more women are getting into horror films and can actually teach us guys a thing or two! You go girl!

Next up is another great Horror blog run by a woman who knows her Horror!! Rhonny Reaper brings you the DOLLAR BIN HORROR blog, where she brings you "the best in cheap thrills, gory spills, and everything macabre"! This blog is full of movie reviews of some great older "dollar bin" type of movies. This is one to bookmark for sure!

And finally, we have the HORROR DOSE blog. This is a great Horror movie review blog. Blog author Chris brings you a nice mixture of reviews of both new and older horror films. And hey, any blog that has a review of both DEAD ALIVE and ARMY OF DARKNESS is a blog I want to read!! Thanks Chris for an awesome Horror blog!!

Check these blogs out...you will not be disappointed!

The only must buy I see this week is INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS....while not a true Horror movie, it does warrant mention here with its Exploitation feel and its Horror movie level of violence. Plus, it's just a damn good movie, so I want to talk about it! Tarantino did not disappoint on his long awaited WWII film. As for the other films....nothing really sticks out this week....the movie P looks interesting...check out the trailer by clicking the title in the above list.

DVD Review: SWITCHBLADE SISTERS

I just finished up watching Jack Hill's SWITCHBLADE SISTERS. Also known as THE JEZEBELS, this 1975 films is the definition of a true Grindhouse film. For those unfamiliar with Jack Hill, he is a genre legend, directing such classics as: THE WASP WOMAN, SPIDER BABY, THE BIG DOLL HOUSE, THE BIG BIRD CAGE, COFFY, and FOXY BROWN. Some of these films are considered some of the greatest exploitation films made. SWITCHBLADE SISTERS is a great addition to these classics, and is what Quentin Tarantino says is Jack Hill's masterpiece. Quentin Tarantino released this DVD under his Rolling Thunder Pictures label. Here is the basic plot from IMDB.com:

The "Dagger Debs" are a gang of snarling girls, and Maggie is their newest member. Lace, the ever tooth-gritting leader, befriends her but soon has doubts --it seems Lace's man, Dominic, head of the "Silver Daggers" fancies the new recruit. Lace struggles to keep control of the Debs, and a handle on Nick, as they face off against the rival gang of pushers lead by Crabs.

While some of the older Grindhouse films really show there age and can actually be quite boring by today's standards, SWITCHBLADE SISTERS kept me entertained the entire time. It had a great mix of action, revenge, and wasn't overly full of un-needed gratuitous nudity that some of the films from this genre contain. The character of Maggie is one of my favorites by far. She comes across as nice and sweet, but her vengefullness really comes out at the end, and when she is finally captured by the police, she yells a tirade at the cops that would make Charlie Manson proud. The look on her face..the intensity in her eyes was great as she told the cops, "You can beat us, chain us, lock us up, but we're gonna be back..understand? And when we do cop, you better keep your ass off our turf, or we'll blow it off, ya dig! We're Jezebels cop...remember that name...We'll be back!!!" HA! Classic...they don't have that kind of dialog in movies these days!

The DVD comes packed with special features such as an introduction and a final Analysis of the film from Quentin Tarantino, along with trailers for most all of Jack Hill's classic Grindhouse films. This DVD is a must have for any fans of Grindhouse/Exploitation cinema.

Thanks to my buddy Scott for sharing this great poster with me....it's the Zombie Emergency Procedure plan. Print it out and hang it up at your place of work. This week's Horror related DVD releases coming out Tuesday, 12/8

Here are the Horror related DVD's coming out tomorrow, 12/8:
(Click on titles for a trailer for that film)

* GOZU (2-Disc Collector's Edition)
* HOME MOVIE
* THE LIGHTS
* RUN! BITCH RUN! (RED BAND-not safe for work)
* SANDS OF OBLIVION
* SCREAMS IN THE NIGHT
* THE SKEPTIC

Not a great lineup again this week. There are a couple of interesting DVD's to point out, though. GOZU is being re-released in a 2-disc Collector's Edition. For fans of Takashi Miike, this is a great addition to your collection if you don't already have the single disc version released a few years back. This movie is messed up, as you have come to expect from a Takashi Miike movie. Make sure to click on the title above and check out the trailer. Also....check out the trailer for RUN! BITCH RUN!, although make sure no kiddos are around and definitely do not watch it at work. This is an exploitation flick made to look like the classic 1970's grindhouse rape revenge flicks that were popular at the time....most notable being I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE and LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT. If you are a fan of those, check out the trailer.

Well, until next time...stay scared!!

DVD Review: THRILLER: THEY CALL HER ONE EYE

Also known as THRILLER: A CRUEL PICTURE, THRILLER tells the tale of a young girl who is picked up by a stranger and taken back to his house where he begins to get her hooked on heroin, and forces her to into a life of drug addiction and prostitution. After gouging the face of her first "client" with her fingernails, her captor punishes her by taking a scalpel to her left eye. After this, she seems to have succumbed to the control of her captor, but little does he know, she is using her day off (nice of him to give her a day to rest up) to take classes in karate and marksmanship, learning to use both a rifle and a pistol. She then proceeds to a steal a shotgun, which she saws of to make here signature weapon, and then extract revenge on everyone who has hurt her. She goes after all the clients that used and abused her, and then finally after her captor who drove her into this lifestyle.
This is a great film and a perfect example of a classic 70's Grindhouse film. It is a great revenge flick on par with I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE and LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT. If you like exploitation films of the revenge sort, this a must see film.

DAYBREAKERS trailer

If you have not seen this yet, stop what you are doing and watch this now!! If you are sick of the teeny-bopper vampire movies that seem to dominate the theaters these days, then check out this trailer for DAYBREAKERS. I think we are finally getting back to real vampire movies...although this one has a futuristic plot twist to it. Apparently, the world is run by vampires and the last surviving humans are farmed for their blood....but what happens when the last few humans start dying off? This movie should be a lot of fun...the trailer looks great! Thank to my buddy Scott's Blog for bringing this new film to my attention!!

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: REANIMATED

The NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: ORIGINS post I did a couple of days ago reminded me of this other NOTLD project in the works, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: REANIMATED!! Here is a description of the project from the official website:

Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated is a mass collaborative artistic re-envisioning of George A. Romero's 1968 cult classic, Night of the Living Dead.
International artists and animators were invited to select scenes from the film and reinvent them through their artwork.
Open to all styles, media and processes the results ran the gamut with scenes created in everything from puppet theater to CGI, hand drawn animation to flash, and oil paintings to tattoos.

From the looks of the trailer, this is going to be very cool! Check out the trailer below.

Must Watch: MARY POPPINS: The Horror Movie Cut

HA...this is great! Someone has taken scenes from Disney's MARY POPPINS and re-edited a trailer to turn it into a Horror film. It looks like one of the scariest movies ever!! It is amazing what a little ambient music and quick edits can to to turn one of the most beloved children's movies into this frightening trailer..check it out! And a special thanks to Carl at the I Like Horror Movies Blog for featuring this on his site. I found it while browsing his awesome horror blog. Check it out if you haven't already! http://i-like-horror-movies.blogspot.com/

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: ORIGINS

A buddy of mine sent me the link to this article about a new NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD movie. This one is titled NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: ORIGINS and is going to be a 3D CGI film. That alone has me interested...there is so much they could do with a zombie CGI film that couldn't be done with live actors..so this could end up being really cool...or....a CGI zombie film could be just horrible. I really don't know at this point. I will wait to make judgement once we see some stills from the production and eventually the trailer. I will, of course, post updates as I come across them! Until then, read the full article on Yahoo. The article list some of the actors that have signed on to do voice-overs, including genre vets Bill Moseley and Danielle Harris!

DVD Review: 42ND STREET FOREVER VOL. 5: ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE CINEMA

For those unfamiliar with the 42ND STREET FOREVER series, these are Dvd's filled with nothing but trailers from the Grindhouse era, when 42nd Street in New York was filled with seedy theaters that ran nothing but grimy exploitation and horror films. This series shows you trailers of these films, some of which you might be familiar with, and many that I'm sure you have never heard of. They are up to Volume 5 of the 42ND STREET FOREVER series, and I have to say that this is the weakest of the bunch in my opinion. Some trailers were so bad I had to skip them and go on to the next one. Now that is bad when I can't even sit through a minute and half to 2 minute long trailer! Volumes 1 and 2 were great with mainly horror offerings, but they have gone downhill since then. There are a few notable trailers that were definitely worth watching, like TERROR IN THE WAX MUSEUM and THE DEVIL WITHIN HER, aka. BEYOND THE DOOR. Click on those titles to watch the trailers.
If you haven't bought any of the 42ND STREET FOREVER films, I highly suggest the first two volumes...all the ones after that are pretty weak. Also, worth noting, they also released a 42ND STREET FOREVER XXX-TREME SPECIAL EDITION, full of nothing but trailers for the trashy adult x-rated films the grindhouse theaters showed along with the horror and exploitation films, so check that out if you are into that. You can purchase all the volumes from Amazon.com buy clicking on THIS LINK.

I recently ran across this extremely disgusting, disturbing, and grotesque trailer for the Japanese film called...well, GROTESQUE! The trailer is not dubbed, so I can't tell anything about the film. Basically it looks like Japan's answer to HOSTEL. Watch the trailer and let me know what you think!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING everybody!!!!

In honor of this great day, I present you the fake trailer for the movie, THANKSGIVING, created by Eli Roth (CABIN FEVER, HOSTEL I & II). For thoset that don't know, THANKSGIVING was one of the four fake trailers that played between PLANET TERROR and DEATH PROOF, in Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's 2007 double feature film, GRINDHOUSE! The four fake trailers were created and directed by other horror movie vets, and included: MACHETE (Rodriguez), WEREWOLF WOMEN OF THE S.S. (Rob Zombie), DON'T (Edgar Wright), and THANKSGIVING (Roth). For those that missed GRINDHOUSE in the theaters, you missed a great experience. Unfortunately, the only DVD released in the U.S. split the two films and doesn't include any of the trailers except for MACHETE.
Also...on a side note, rumors have been flying since GRINDHOUSE was released that Eli Roth was going to develop THANKSGIVING into a full feature film! Well...a check on IMDB.com shows that THANKSGIVING is indeed listed on Eli Roth's page as being "In Development, so we might get to see a full film one of these days!! In the meantime, enjoy this great trailer:

DVD Review: TORSO

"Enter if you dare, the bizarre world of the psychosexual mind" is the tagline for the film I CORPO PRESENTANO TRACCE DI VIOLENZA CARNALE, aka. BODIES BEAR TRACES OF CARNAL VIOLENCE, or better known to American audiences as the simple, TORSO. This 1973 classic was written and directed by Italian director, Sergio Martino. Martino looks like he could be a student of Dario Argento, as he has very similar styles compared to Argento's early films from the 1970's. TORSO is a stylized Giallo film, a genre popular among Italian directors during the 70's and 80's. TORSO stands apart from other Giallo films, though, in that we get a little more blood and gore than we do in typical Giallo films. Here is the plot from the Blue Underground DVD:

A series of sex murders shock a college campus, and four beautiful young girlfriends head for the safety of an isolated country villa. But as they succumb to their own erotic desires, their weekend of pleasure becomes a vacation to dismemeber at the hands-and blade-of the lecherous maniac.

A vacation to dismember...ha! I love that line. This is a great film if you are fans of the Giallo sub genre of Horror films. A few scenes stick in my mind in particular. One is a woman being chased through a muddy swamp by the killer. When the killer finally gets to her, all we see is her arm in the muddy water, and slowly, the red blood flows into the murky brown water. Very effective. Next is a scene in the vacation house when the only surviving girl is looking from an upstairs bedroom down to the 1st floor living room, where 3 of her friends lie dead at the hands of the killer. The killer enters the room carrying a saw. From her angle, all she can see is the woman's arm. Slowly, the arm moves back and forth, back and forth, and while we can't see what is happening, you know the back and forth motion is caused from the saw. These scenes are very effective and the entire movie is an experience I highly recommend.

Must watch: Sam Raimi Lost Film: ATTACK OF THE HELPING HAND

For those that don't know who Sam Raimi is, shame on you! Sam Raimi is the director of the EVIL DEAD TRILOGY, DARKMAN, the SPIDERMAN films, and most recently, DRAG ME TO HELL. While searching one of my favorite horror blogs on the web, Evil Dead News.com, I found this great 8mm short film shot back in 1979, 2 years before his great EVIL DEAD film. You can see some similarities in the two films and it is fun to see how far Sam Raimi has come as a director.
Check out the Sam Raimi's short film, ATTACK OF THE HELPING HAND:

MUST WATCH!! NIGHT OF THE DEMONS remake trailer

One of my favorite Horror films from the 80's was Kevin Tenney's NIGHT OF THE DEMONS, about a group of teens that go to a Halloween party in an abandoned funeral parlor. While doing a seance, they awaken evil spirits that take over the teens one by one, turning them into vicious demons. The original starred fan fave Linnea Quigley as Suzanne. Well, 21 years later, we have a remake of this Horror classic! The film stars Bobbi Sue Luther (LAID TO REST) in the roll of Suzanne now, and also stars screen vets, Edward Furlong and Shannon Elizabeth. Also...watch for a cameo by Linnea Quigley herself!! Check out the trailer below, I think this looks to be one of the better remakes we have seen in a while. What do you think?

Must Watch Webisode: BROKEN TOY

My buddy Scott let found this online and let me know about it. It is a web series called BROKEN TOY. Episode 1 is out now and is definitely worth watching. It is only about 5 minutes long. I wish I could tell you what the plot is, but it is really hard to tell...I think we will figure it out as we go along with future episodes. The episode opens with a man covered in blood making eggs in someones house....he apparently is a machine of some sort that has malfunctioned. That is about all I can tell...not sure if this is going to veer more towards Horror or Sci-Fi, or a good mixture of both, but either way this is very intriguing. Let me know what you think! I will post an update once Episode 2 is released!

THE CANYON looks like a promising bit of survival horror. PENANCE looks......well...interesting I guess would be the word. TAINTLIGHT is a TWILIGHT parody that looks like it could be the worst movie ever made. Actually, watch the trailer for THANKSKILLING, it might actually be the worst movie ever made....it's about a killer turkey. Yes, you read that right.

TRANSYLMANIA stars James DeBello (CABIN FEVER, SCARY MOVIE 2) and a group of others as college kids who go to study abroad in beautiful...Romania! The movie is rated R and has a theatrical release date of Dec. 4th. Watch the trailer and then let me know what you think.

Happy SATURDAY THE 14th!

Everyone knows about FRIDAY THE 13th, but do you know about a little film called SATURDAY THE 14th? As you might expect, it is a horror/comedy spoof. The film came out in 1981 and was one of the funniest movies I had ever seen at the time (give me a break, I was about 8 years old when I first saw it). I'm sure if I watched it now, I might feel different about it...based on the trailer I just watched anyway! Click below to watch the trailer for yourself....have you seen this film before?

DVD Review: THE DEVIL HUNTER

Wow...when will I learn. Director Jess Franco is considered a cult director, kinda like Italy's version of Ed Wood. Except Ed Wood's films were so bad that they are at least fun to watch. Jess Franco's films are so bad they just really suck. Known as SEXO CANIBAL in it's native Italy, THE DEVIL HUNTER as it is known here in the U.S. came out in 1980 and was Franco's answer to the jungle/cannibal genre that was so popular at the time, in the likes of films such as CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST and CANNIBAL FEROX. Here is the basic plot of this suckfest known as THE DEVIL HUNTER:

A Vietnam veteran heads to an island inhabited by cannibals to save a kidnapped model not only from her kidnappers, but also from the cannibals' lurking Devil God.
Speaking of the "lurking Devil God"..that sounds pretty cool...but all it is a big African American man with crazy red bug eyes who walks around buck naked and fights people. Here is a pic...I will spare you the full body shot!

While Franco does have some good films (mainly his zombie movies), this is definitely not one of them. I highly suggest you don't bother with this film unless you have 102 minutes to kill and there is no paint drying on any wall in near proximity to you .

I thought I would share a few pics from Halloween night...

Halloween has come and gone, and I miss it already. I thought I would share a few pics with you of me and my friends on Halloween night! We had a blast hanging out on Dickson St. here in Fayetteville. Enjoy the pics:

Natalie the Cop, Me as Jason Voorhees, Katy the Pin Up Girl, and Caleb in his award winning Edward Scissorhands costume (Caleb won first prize at the costume contest!). It's hard to tell in this pic, but the scissor hands were homemade by Caleb out of actual sheet metal! Well done, Caleb!!

Katy, Caleb, and Abbie as Rosie the Riveter
Me and my wife, April, who went as a Camp Crystal Lake
Counselor...a.k.a....my next victim!!!

And finally, me and my buddy Phillip as Michael Graves, from The Misfits.
