It's pumpkin carving time!!

  It's getting close to Halloween, which means it's time to carve pumpkins!!!  My family headed out to the  pumpkin patch today to pick out some future Jack-o-lanterns!!  I have done some pretty detailed pumpkins in the past, like a Jason Voorhees pumpkin and a Freddy Krueger pumpkin.

  This year I kept it a little more simple with a pumpkin inspired by the opening credits pumpkin from the 1978 classic, HALLOWEEN.  I also helped one of my boys do a cool Jack Skelington pumpkin which I think turned out pretty good!   Here are our pumpkins we did today:

First up is my 7 year old son's Vampire pumpkin!  My boy drew the face, and cut it out all by himself!  This was the first year he did everything himself  (even cleaning out the pumpkin before carving it).  I was pretty proud of his creation!!






Next is my pumpkin inspired by John Carpenter's 1978 masterpiece, HALLOWEEN!  This is the pumpkin you see in the opening credits sequence.  Very simple, yet spooky!

And here is the Jack Skelington pumpkin that I helped my other son do!  He cleaned the pumpkin out himself, and poked the holes for the pattern, but I did the cutting.  I think this turned out awesome, and it looks even cooler since we used a solid white pumpkin!





Here are all our finished products!  We had a great time carving the pumpkins outside on a beautiful day!

Cult classic NEKROMANTIK is coming to Blu-ray!

 
  In 1987, German director Jörg Buttgereit  created a film that is a true cult classic to horror fans.  The film was NEKROMANTIK and is about a very taboo subject.   Here is the plot of the film from it's ibdb page to tell you what I mean:

  A street sweeper who cleans up after grisly accidents brings home a full corpse for him and his wife to enjoy sexually, but is dismayed to see that his wife prefers the corpse over him.

  There you go...pretty vile and disgusting stuff.  All the more reason that horror fans like this movie.  I have never seen this film, as it has been long out of print on DVD.  You don't see this one for sale very often, as the DVD has become quite a collectors item.  I have seen copies of the DVD sell for up to $80 on ebay and amazon.com. 

  Well, if you haven't been able to see the film, you soon will have a chance. It was just announced that distribution company Cult Epics will release a 2014 Special Edition DVD and Blu-ray of NEKROMANTIK!  I will let you know once I hear an official release date.   Watch the trailer and let me know what you think.  Be advised, this trailer is NOT SAFE FOR WORK.  The trailer contains lots of gore and nudity.  Watch at your own risk!

Blu-ray Review: AMERICAN HORROR STORY: ASYLUM

  There are some excellent horror related TV shows on these days, but one of the best ones by far is AMERICAN HORROR STORY.  If you watched the 1st season, you will know how good this show is.  From the acting to the writing, everything about this show is amazing.   I loved the first season, so I was hoping the 2nd season would be as good.   Well, I am happy to say that the 2nd season titled, AMERICAN HORROR STORY:  ASYLUM, did not disappoint!   Each season of AHS will be an entirely new story.  Here is the basic plot of ASYLUM courtesy of 20th Century Fox:

The sins of the past haunt the present at the notorious Briarcliff home for the criminally insane, ruled with an iron fist by Sister Jude.   To be honest, I am just about halfway through AHS:  ASYLUM.  I watched all of the first season and loved it!  I had the 2nd season recorded on my DVR, but when we moved we changed DVR boxes so I lost them all.  Luckily, AHS: ASYLUM is available now on DVD and Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, so I am able to watch all the episodes.  I am only 6 episodes in and I can already tell you that the 2nd season is much crazier and scarier than the first season.  I love that Jessica Lange is back, as she was one of my favorite actors from Season 1. There are some other returning actors as well.  What's neat about this concept that even though it is considered the "2nd Season" of AMERICAN HORROR STORY, it is a completely new storyline and has nothing to do with the first season.  So if you didn't catch the first season, you can start with season 2 as it is basically a brand new show.

  This is by far one of the best horror shows on TV.  Check this show out for sure and pick up your copy of Season 2 today!

Blu-ray Review: CURSE OF CHUCKY (2013)

  I am a huge fan of the CHILD'S PLAY movies, especially the first two films.  The later sequels BRIDE OF CHUCKY and SEED OF CHUCKY got a little (further) far fetched and kind of cheesy.  I was so relieved as I was watching the newest installment in the CHUCKY films, CURSE OF CHUCKY, that it was a return to the original concept.  This was more of a pure horror film than the last few sequels have been.   Here is the plot of the film from the Universal Studios Home Entertainment website:

  He's back! From the filmmakers that brought you Chucky comes the terrifying return of the pint-sized doll possessed by the spirit of a notorious serial killer. When a mysterious package arrives at the house of Nica (Fiona Dourif, True Blood), she doesn't give it much thought. However, after her mother's mysterious death, Nica begins to suspect that the talking, red-haired doll her visiting niece has been playing with may be the key to the ensuing bloodshed and chaos. The return of America's favorite toy, voiced again by Brad Dourif, is unrated and full of more blood-splattered thrills and chills.

  I was sad that this film didn't get a theatrical release.  The film went direct to video, and I know that scares some people off.  Used to direct to DVD films meant that weren't good enough to be at the theater.  That is not necessarily true any more, and CURSE OF CHUCKY proves it.  This was an excellent film, and one of the better, if not the best sequel of all the CHUCKY films in my opinion.  If SEED and BRIDE both got a theatrical release, I have no clue why this one didn't.  I liked this film better than those for sure.  

  As I mentioned above, CURSE OF CHUCKY is a return to the true horror film like the first couple of films.  Sure, there is still some cheesy dialog and some hoaky Chucky one-liners, but that is part of the appeal of these films and is quite normal for horror films.  Heck, Freddy Kruegar throws out one-liners with the best of them!  Chucky may still have his wit, but he is all business in this new film.  He deliverers some major damage to his victims, resulting in some really great gore! 

 Check this one out for sure.   If you are a fan of the CHILD'S PLAY films, you will not be disappointed!

Here's a horror movie remake you probably didn't even know existed! WHITE ZOMBIE!

  Most horror fans are familiar with the 1932 film, WHITE ZOMBIE, which is considered the first full length zombie film.  What you may not know, though, is that a film production company called Ragnbone Productions is remaking this classic film! 

  I know a lot of people don't like remakes, but sometimes they can be a good thing.  I think WHITE ZOMBIE is a perfect film to get the remake treatment.  I know it is considered a classic, but I tried to watch this film for the first time a few years ago and it was actually pretty boring to me.  Maybe I need to watch it again and give it another shot, but I remember at the time not being too impressed.  I think it was just so dated that by today's standards, it was too tame for a true "zombie movie",  which is something I hope this remake will correct!

 A while back I posted a video of the hilarious invisible driver drive-thru prank from the youtube channel, Magic of Rahat.  This guy has some hilarious videos, a lot of them having to do with horror themed pranks.  Rahat is back with a cool skeleton driver prank that is definitely worth a watch!  Check it out at the link below and click on the Magic of Rahat's youtube channel to check out all his other great videos!

Check out the great CARRIE inspried coffee shop Telekinetic girl prank!!

 

  You might have already seen this, as it is making it's way around  the internet.  A marketing company has produced an awesome Telekinetic girl prank at a New York coffee shop to promote the new CARRIE film coming out next Friday, 10/18! 

 In the prank, a man is set up with a harness and cord tied to him, and he spills coffee on actress playing the telekinetic girl. She then uses her "powers"  to throw the man and begin wrecking the coffee shop, as horrified patrons look on in disbelief!  This is very cool, and worth a watch if you haven't seen it yet!

Don't forget to watch AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN tonight on FX!!

  It's finally here!  The premiere of the third season of AMERICAN HORROR STORY starts tonight at 10/9 Central!!  This season is called COVEN and here is a brief description of the plot this season courtesy of the official website:

American Horror Story: Coven tells the secret history of witches and witchcraft in America. Over three hundred years have passed since the turbulent days of Salem and those who managed to escape are now facing extinction. Mysterious attacks have been escalating against their kind and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans to learn how to protect themselves. Wrapped up in the turmoil is new arrival, Zoe, who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own. Alarmed by the recent aggression, Fiona, the long-absent Supreme, sweeps back into town, determined to protect the Coven and hell-bent on decimating anyone who gets in her way.

  The first season was one of my favorite shows on TV.  I missed the second season  (I had the episodes on my DVR that died, so never got to watch them).  I am really looking forward to this new season and expect good things!  Check out the first look trailer and some of the teasers in the links below!

Blu-ray Review: THE WALKING DEAD: THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON

 I assume if you are a reader of this blog, then you are watching one of the best shows that
have ever been on TV, THE WALKING DEAD.  If you are a fan of horror, and are not watching this show, something is wrong, and we'll need to talk.  But, for those that are watching the show, THE WALKING DEAD:  THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON is available now on DVD and Blu-ray.  If you are like me, you have seen every episode thus far, but this is a series that you will definitely want to revisit on video someday.  This is one I will let my kids experience someday when they are old enough to watch it and the show has long been off the air.

  But, you don't need to wait that long to enjoy this release, as it is packed full of extras and special features.  Even if you don't need to go back and watch the episodes any time soon, there is still tons of time you can spend in the world of THE WALKING DEAD.  Here are just some of the great special features included on this release:

Check out the crazy trailer for the upcoming film, CANNIBAL DINER!  BrinkVision is releasing CANNIBAL DINER to limited edition DVD and VOD on October 15th!  Here is the basic plot synopsis from BrinkVision:

Kati is a young model on her way to a birthday party for her little sister Celine. Tanja, Kati's best friend, and other friends want to celebrate and camp near the woods. While preparing the party, the girls get attacked by strangers. Kati, still on the way to the camping place, loses her way in the woods and is led on to the wrong track by a vagabond. When her car is stolen afterwards, Kati finds herself lost in the deep forest and arrives at an old factory, where a clan of cannibals is already preparing their feast's main course - Kati's friends.

Blu-ray Review: ZOMBIE HUNTER (2013)

  I love a good zombie movie, and I love most any film with Danny Trejo in it, so the latest zombie film from Well Go USA seemed like a perfect match!  The film is ZOMBIE HUNTER and while it wasn't quite as good as I hoped, it was still a very fun film and worth a watch. If nothing else, for the crazy gore in a couple of scenes.  If you're not familiar with the film, here is the plot from the Well Go USA website:

When a street drug turns junkies into an army of giant, mutant flesh-eaters, no hope is left - but one man remains. Hunter's got nothing left but a beat-up Camero, a trunk full of guns and booze, and a vendetta.
He crashes into a small group of survivors, led by an ax-wielding priest named Jesus (Danny Trejo). They're searching for the promised land - but does it even exist? They better pray for a miracle, because the zombies are hot on their heels. And the psychotic clown with a chainsaw? You don't even wanna know.

  Ha, ok...the crazy clown part was probably my favorite part of the movie.  He was creepy as hell and does some crazy damage with that chainsaw!  Overall I really liked this film. It is very stylish and shot is a very cool, unique way. It reminds me of a music video at times.

  This film has tons of gore, which normally would always be a good thing. The only problem is that all of the gore is CG.  There are no practical effects in this film.  There are tons of beheadings, chopped off limbs, etc....but it is all computer animation.  Some of it looks ok, but most of it looks like the cheesy CG it is.   That is one thing that really bothered me.  If it weren't for that, this would have been a much better film.  I know it is cheaper and easier than practical effects, but CG will never look as good as the real thing. 

  The only other issue I had with this release is that there are no special features.  I have really come to love the "making of" type documentaries that accompany most DVD's and Blu-rays these days.  It is weird to have a bare bones Blu-ray release like this.   Ok, so that's all my gripes with this film, other than that I enjoyed the film and recommend you check it out.

  Director K. King has no other credits on his imdb page other than ZOMBIE HUNTER, so that is pretty impressive that he started his career with this film.  I expect big things out of Mr. King in the future!
