DVD Review: WOMEN'S STUDIES (2010)

WOMEN'S STUDIES was written and directed by Lonnie Martin and is being released on the Big Bite Entertainment label at R-Squared Films. Here is the basic plot synopsis from the RSquared Films website:

At Ross-Prentiss Women's Academy female empowerment is taken to a whole new, murderous level! Grad student Mary has just finished another summer working for Senator Gayle Hamlin, but on her way back to school, Mary and her friends become stranded. A group of students led by Judith offer them shelter at their isolated campus. On the surface, the academy appears to be a feminist utopia, but Ross-Prentiss has a darker side: indoctrinating women into their apocalyptic sect and sending them into the world to strip men of power.... and their lives!

Overall this was a pretty good film. While it did keep me entertained, there were some definite problems with this film, but there were also some high points as well.

First off, with the negative. The worst part about this movie to me was the acting. While the film was obviously a low budget film, I feel the acting should have still been a bit better. While the part of Mary was played pretty well by Cindy Marie Martin, the actor portraying her boyfriend was hard to watch. The story line was a little hard to follow at times, at least for this reviewer, and with what seemed to be a few different plot points all going on at the same time, it made for some times of confusion.

That being said, there were some very good things about this film. Mainly, the gore effects. While there were not as many gore scenes as I like in a movie, there were still more that I expected for this type of film...and some of them were done very well. The film was shot very nicely, so the picture is nice and clear.

I don't think this will be a hit with most of the casual Horror fans, a certain section of the Horror crowd will probably really dig this film. This could be the first Horror movie made specifically for women, as the film is a 90 exercise in feminism. Although it did make me wonder...is this film a pro-feminism film like I think it is? Or is it just the opposite, as it shows you how crazy these women can really be.

DVD Review: KILLER BIKER CHICKS (2009)

KILLER BIKER CHICKS was both written and directed by Regan Redding and is distributed by R Squared Films. This is not a true Horror movie, although it does contain some very horrific scenes. This film is a throwback to the great exploitation flicks of the 60's and 70's. The film feels like it would be right at home in a dark theater on New York's 42nd street. Here is the basic plot synopsis from the R2 website:

In the heat of the Nevada desert, in the middle of nowhere, exists a hidden world of violence, corruption, sex, drugs and rock & roll. The only thing hotter than the sun bleaching the landscape is the handful of ruthless biker chicks that rule it. When a band of musicians run into car trouble, they discover help in the shapely form of biker queen Mother (Rose Gorlano) and her girls at a lone gas station. But salvation is only an illusion as the boys and several other weary travelers find themselves caught in the crossfire between a rival biker gang, corrupt cops, drug deals gone bad and the meanest Killer Biker Chicks ever to ride the roads.

As I mentioned , the film is not a true Horror film, but does contain some scenes that would be right at home in any Horror flick. In fact, the opening scene shows the gang of girls as they torment a man that obviously did them wrong in some way. They have him tied up to some posts out in the middle of the desert, and eventually end up burning him alive. As we see his hands still tied up, but all the flesh gone revealing skeletal remains of his hands, I knew I was in for a real treat with this film. The rest of the film didn't disappoint, but did get a bit confusing to me when it went a different route and started with a segment that was mainly comedy, merely playing for some laughs. I didn't feel it was necessary and to me disrupted the gritty and violent tone of the film up to that point. But don't worry, the film gets back on track and finishes with a bang! Overall this was a fun film and any fan of exploitation films should give this one a chance.

DVD Review: EARTH DAY (2009)

Since yesterday was Earth Day, I decided to watch a movie called....EARTH DAY! The film was written, produced, and directed by Mister Ooh-La-La, and is distributed by Rsquared Films. Here is the plot synopsis from imdb.com:

Earth Day tells the tale of a group of ex eco-crusaders who find themselves being systematically slaughtered as the one year anniversary of the tragic Earth Day death of their leader, Pixie, approaches. Detective Trent Torrance suspects only one man: Hassan, who grew up in the most extreme terrorist sect in all of Pakistan, only to be expelled for "going under the Burga" and embracing the forbidden art of Women's hair care. Together with Priscilla, Pixie's nihilistic twin sister, they strive to prove Hassan's innocence, while trying to avoid her insanely overprotective plastic surgeon father Dr. Percival Peever, and his plastic surgery casualty of an assistant, Lenora.

Don't go into this movie expecting a cinematic masterpiece...it is not by any means. But, it did keep me entertained which is what a movie should do. The acting is ok, not great, not horrible, just ok. The movie is a bit slow at times with not much going on but dialog, but what keeps it entertaining is that the dialog is so good. There are some genuinely funny lines in this film and I would say that this film is basically more of a comedy than the Horror/Comedy it is stated to be, if it weren't for some pretty gory death scenes. There was more blood in this film than I expected from a Horror/Comedy film. One of the greatest scenes is when a guy gets his manhood cut off by the killer with a broken wine bottle. Yuck! A lot of people have compared this movie to the films of Troma, which is a great comparison. If you are a fan of Troma films, you will love this film. If you are a fan of really good, smart, horror films, this film is not for you. I myself like all types of Horror films, and can usually find good in all of them, so while not going on my top 10 list of Horror films (or lets be honest, top 50 Horror films), it was still a good flick that is worth a watch.
I don't know who this Mister Ooh-La-La, guy is, but this being his first (and only) film so far, I look forward to seeing his growth as a writer and director and hope to see more from him in the future!
