Blu-ray Review: NIGHTMARE WEEKEND (1986)

http://vinegarsyndrome.com/shop/nightmare-weekend/NIGHTMARE WEEKEND
Directed by
Distributed by Vinegar Syndrome

  Let me start by saying I LOVE the 80's.  I love everything about that decade.  It is the decade I grew up in and have such fond memories from.  I love the wacky music, the crazy clothes and the weird and wild movies.    I truly think the 1980s was the best decade for horror films, followed closely by the 1970's.    NIGHTMARE WEEKEND is a perfect example of a wild, crazy, 1980's horror film.   Here is the basic plot from the Vinegar Syndrome website:

  A brilliant computer scientist has just finished work on his greatest creation: a super computer with the ability to transform the personalities of bad and disobedient people. In anticipation of sharing his work with the scientific community, the scientist invites a fellow expert to test the machine on a group of debauched young women. Little does he know that his colleague intends to use the computer to turn their subjects into bloodthirsty mutants!
  Made by a French crew in Florida, NIGHTMARE WEEKEND is a non-stop assault on the senses. Head explosions, gratuitous nudity and softcore sex, bikers, roller-skating, and a telepathic hand puppet named George rank NIGHTMARE WEEKEND among the weirdest and most jaw droppingly absurd horror films of the 1980s. Long available only in low quality transfers of the R rated version, Vinegar Syndrome presents this forgotten trash masterpiece fully uncut and in widescreen, on Blu-ray for the first time!

  You can tell this film is from the 80's as it is very dated with the wardrobe and props, but I have to admit it was fun seeing guys with huge Walkmans and earphones and women doing jazzercize and roller skating!    While that was a lot fun and brought back some memories, the film itself was a lot of fun, although it was very strange.  In fact, one of the main characters is a talking hand puppet.  I still don't quite get how he fit into this film, but the actors act like he is just any other co-star and act totally normal with the puppet as a character.  Very weird for sure...and again, only from a movie from the 80's!

  The film has some great gore scenes for fans of that (aren't we all), some great kills, and some great action, including a killer car that is controlled by a video game!?  Ha!  Did I mention how crazy and weird this film was?   This is a film you will need to check out for sure if you have never seen it.  This is such a nostalgic 80s flick and one that surely belongs in any DVD/BD collector's library!

  NIGHTMARE WEEKEND is available now on DVD/Blu-ray combo pack from Vinegar Syndrome and contains the following special features:

*  Blu-ray/DVD Combo | Region Free | 1.85:1 OAR
*  Restored in 2k from 35mm internegative

Blu-ray Review: MORITURIS (2011)

http://synapse-films.com/dvds/horror/morituris-legions-of-the-dead-blu-ray/MORITURIS
Directed by:
Distributed by Synapse Films / CAV Distributing

  Very seldom do I get a movie to review that I have never heard of, but that was the case with MORITURIS.   I am really surprised that I had never heard of this one, as it was a very fun, entertaining horror film!  Here is the basic plot of the film from the Synapse website:

  Two lovely Romanian girls take a trip with three Italian men to a rumored midnight rave in the middle of a dark forest. As the gang proceeds on foot to their final destination, a mysterious graveyard is discovered, a shockingly vile plot twist is revealed and bloodthirsty undead Roman gladiators rise from the dead to torture and mutilate their victims! For the two women, an already terrifying night is about to get much, much worse, as the zombified warriors hunt down the group to tear their heads off! Will anyone survive the night? An interesting mix of old school 1980s Italian horror, with a touch of the brutality of Wes Craven’s THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, MORITURIS is an unflinching, strong, cruel and extremely violent film featuring gruesome effects from Italian SPFX maestro, Sergio Stivaletti (DEMONS, DEMONS 2, DELLAMORTE DELLAMORE, Dario Argento’s OPERA).

  This film is very strange to say the least.....the first half is very uncomfortable rape/revenge type film while the 2nd half is just a completely crazy kill fest involving zombie Roman Gladiators.  I know it sounds weird and it is, but somehow it works and makes for a very fun film!  While there is not as much gore as I had hoped, what we do see if very well done.   The picture quality with this Blu-ray release is very good as is the acting.   Synapse always puts out some of the best films and this one is a very nice addition to their catalog.

  This is a great film that all horror fans should check out.  Horror fans are always complaining that no good, original horror films come out these days.  Well, I for one have never seen resurrected Roman Gladiators rise from the dead and kill young adults in the middle of the forest.  This one definitely brings something new to the table!  Check this one out for sure!

  MORITURIS is available now on DVD and Blu-ray from Synapse Films and contains the following special features:

*  Original Theatrical Trailer
*  Reversible Cover Art

Blu-ray Review: TROMA'S WAR (1988)

http://www.troma.com/films/tromas-war/TROMA'S WAR
Directed by  , &
Distributed by Troma Entertainment

  I can't tell you how much I love Troma films.....they are just so goofy and wild. They are impossible not to like.   TROMA'S WAR is one of Troma's films that I had never seen before, and I can't believe I went this long without seeing it.  While I love most all of Troma's films, this one catapulted to the top of my favorite's list for sure!   Here is a brief synopsis of the film courtesy of the Troma website:

  TROMA’S WAR is Troma’s masterpiece. Directed by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, TROMA’S WAR is packed with gargantuan battle scenes, heart stopping stunts, and never-before-seen special effects. TROMA’S WAR is the action film that all good citizens of the world can be proud of and enjoy! TROMA’S WAR is Troma’s answer to PLATOON and APOCALYPSE NOW. It is the first war picture that combines satire, sex, special effects make-up, stunts, gore and a beautiful love story.
   A small group of typical Tromaville citizens find themselves in the path of a terrorist army controlled by the power elite. The freedom of Tromaville and the world is at stake! TROMA’S WAR creates new kinds of heroes. A used car salesman, a handsome environmentalist, an obese junk-food gourmand, a seventy-year-old housewife, some sensational young women, a year old jingoistic baby and more sensational women all become deadly soldiers in the most unusual and explosive, action-packed combat film ever produced by the Troma Team.

  To me, this is Troma's true masterpiece. While the Toxic Avenger films might be more popular, TROMA'S WAR is probably the best made Troma film I have seen.  You can tell the budget was high on this film.  The acting is good, although some of it is very campy which is very typical of most all Troma films.   There are a lot of characters in this film, all of which are fun to watch in their own unique ways.  Aside from the silliness of the film, it is actually quite action packed with lots of gun play and tons of explosions!

  This is one I will definitely be revisiting soon.  If you are a fan of Troma films, this one is a must have in your collection.

  TROMA'S WAR is available now on Blu-ray which contains the following special features:

*  Director's commentary
*  London's War
*  Post war reflections
*  Kill-O-Meter
*  2 minutes with Rof
*  Veteran's Day: a post-tromatic reunion

Blu-ray Review: ANGST (1983)

http://www.cavd.com/product.php?productid=2576ANGST
Directed by:
Distributed by Cult Epics / CAV Distributing

 Cult Epics has been putting out some wonderful films lately, and this latest release is no different.   Their latest release is the Austrian film ANGST from 1983.  Here is the basic synopsis from the CAV website:

  ANGST, photographed by legendary Oscar-winning Polish animator/experimentalist Zbig Rybczynski and scored by Krautrock synth god Klaus Schulze (Tangerine Dream), is one hell of a gorgeously stylized and shockingly visceral experience: a forgotten classic on the fringes of the slasher cycle. Erwin Leder (Das Boot, Schindler's List) plays a maniacal killer based on the real-life serial murderer Werner Kniesek. As he stalks through the bland Viennese countryside, Schulze's music pulses darkly, and Zbig's innovative "first-person" camerawork grabs you by the throat, never letting go. Angst is one film that, without any empty hyperbole, we can guarantee you'll never, ever forget.

 This is definitely one of those films that will stay with you long after you view it.  To say it's disturbing is an understatement.   The film focus on a psychopath that knows nothing more than killing.  Once he is released from prison, he can't help but continue on his killing streak.  The film is very realistic and has a very dark, disturbing feel to it.  That is a great accomplishment of the filmmakers for sure.   The acting is also very good by everyone involved, especially by Erwin Leder who plays the part of the killer.

  The camerawork is something that really sets this film apart from others like it.  The cinematography of ANGST is amazing, with some very good camera shots and setups.  These shots really let you get inside the mind of the killer as you follow directly behind him as he goes about his killings.

  I'm sure I won't be the first reviewer to compare this to the classic serial killer film, HENRY:  PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER.   This film reminded me of that film in spots, but ANGST was the better of the two films in my opinion, as it just feels more real.   Kudos to director  for this great film.  I find it very strange, and sad, that this was Director Gerald Kargl's only film!  If this was his first feature film, I would have loved to have seen more by this great filmmaker.

 ANGST is available now on DVD and Blu-ray from Cult Epics and CAV Distribution.  Special Features include the following:

- New High-definition Transfer
- Optional playback with or without Prologue
- New Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Introduction by Gaspar NoƩ (2015)
- Featurette: Erwin Leder in Fear (2015)
- Interview with Gerald Kargl by Jorg Buttgeriet (2003)
- Interview with cinematographer Zbigniew Rybzcynski (2004)
- Audio Commentary by Gerald Kargl conducted by film critic Marcus Stiglegger
- New HD Trailer

The Blu-ray also includes the following:
- 40 Page booklet which includes Interviews with Gerald Kargl, Erwin Leder, Silvia Rabenreither, Illustrated with rare photos and Werner Kniesek original Kurier articles.
- Colectible Blu-ray Slipcase and Sleeve

DVD Review: CLIVE BARKER ORIGINS: SALOME AND THE FORBIDDEN

http://mvdb2b.com/s/CliveBarkersOriginsSalomeAndTheForbidden/MVD7219DCLIVE BARKER ORIGINS:  SALOME AND THE FORBIDDEN
Written and Directed by:  Clive Barker
Distributed by MVD Entertainment

  If you are a fan of Clive Barker, you will definitely want to check out SALOME & THE FORBIDDEN,  two short films made by Barker back in the 70's.   SALOME was made in 1973 when Barker was only 21 years old.  THE FORBIDDEN was filmed in 1978 when Barker was 26.   It is very interesting to get to see these early works of Mr. Barker's.   These two short films have been released together on one DVD from MVD.  Here is a bit about the films from the MVD website:

  In 1970s Liverpool, Clive Barker and a small group of friends from college made two short films. "Salome" (1973) and "The Forbidden" (1978) feature early footage of Barker, who also did most of the special effects, and Doug Bradley, who went on to fame as Pinhead in the "Hellraiser" films. Also included are interviews with Barker, Bradley and other key players. Contains graphic violence and nudity. "Salome" is an 18-minute version of the tale based on the Oscar Wilde play and "The Forbidden" is a 35-minute short.

  These films are very strange to say the least.  There is very little to no dialog in the films.  They are very "art-house" type films full of weird, creepy imagery and scenes.  Seeing as how they were shot in the 70's on pretty cheap film equipment, the quality is pretty bad so keep that in mind when you go to view these films.  Also, if there were plots for these films, I sure couldn't find them upon viewing these short films.  I'm not sure if plot is really what Barker was concentrating on here, though.   I think these were filmed more as a showcase for his special effects and creepy imagery.

  It's pretty amazing to see what Barker went on to do when you compare these early films to his more modern stuff.  I think everyone would agree that the HELLRAISER films were his greatest achievement.  Some of the imagery is similar and it is very interesting to see how he started his career.

  Included on this DVD is a great interview with a young Clive Barker about his early films.  This was a very interesting interview I had never seen before and to me, makes this DVD worth the purchase for sure.   The DVD is available now from MVD.

Blu-ray Review: DER TODESKING (1990)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098486/DER TODESKING
Written & Directed by
Distributed by Cult Epics / CAV Distributing

  If you are familiar with the films of Jorg Buttgereit, you will know what you are in for when you go into your first viewing of DER TODESKING (The Death King).  Buttgereit is the mastermind behind the cult films, NEKROMANTIK and NEKROMANTIK 2.   With DER TODESKING, Buttgereit has once again given us a very powerful film.  His films are shocking to say the least, but you can't help but want to watch.   As vile and disgusting as the subject matter and scenes might be, Buttgereit somehow manages to find beauty in them at the same time.  Here is the basic plot of DER TODESKING from Cult Epics:

Cult Epics presents the third release in the series Corpse F##king Art; Jorg Buttgereit’s powerful masterpiece Der Todesking (aka The Death King), made in-between Nekromantik (1987) and Nekromantik 2 (1991). Seven stories on Death and Suicide, each taking place on a different day of the week, enframed by the decomposition of a human body. Warning: extremely graphic.

 That's it...pretty basic.  This film focuses on death, both murders and suicides.  While hard to watch, it's even harder to turn away.    I love Buttgereit's film style with his great camera angles and choice of music. This film was a little different than his others in that it is basically 7 scenes, each for a day of the week, put together to form the film.  Each day focuses on a different set of characters and situations, all resulting in death in some manner.  In between each day we get a scene of a decaying corpse, that gets progressively worse during each of the 7 days.  Again, the film can be hard to watch, as death is something that most people are not comfortable with.  Death is just as much a part of life as life itself is, so it is not something we should shy away from when it comes to a film's subject matter.  I can understand, though, how some people might find this film disturbing, so watch at your own risk.

DER TODESKING is available now on limited edition DVD and Blu-ray from Cult Epics and
contains the following special features:

* New Director’s Approved HD transfer (taken from the original 16mm negative)
* New Introduction by Jorg Buttgereit (2015)
* Audio Commentary by Jorg Buttgereit and co-author Franz Rodenkirchen
* The Making of Der Todesking

Check out the "HELL AND BACK" trailer

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2141773/?ref_=nv_sr_1  You don't see many rated R stop-motion animation films, but that is exactly what HELL AND BACK is.   The movie is about a couple of friends that set out to rescue one of their friends that has been dragged to Hell.  It's obviously more comedy than horror, but I think it will be a lot of fun!  Check out the trailer and let me know what you think!

Check out the trailer for the must see horror-comedy, THE FINAL GIRLS

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2118624/?ref_=nv_sr_1  I am a big fan of horror-comedy films when done right.  The problem is that very few are done right. It's a fine line between horror and being funny vs. being stupid.  Unfortunately, most horror-comedy films are pretty dumb.  This one looks very promising, though!   The film is called THE FINAL GIRLS and it looks like it is going to be lots of fun!  Here is the basic plot of the film from it's imdb.com page:

  A young woman grieving the loss of her mother, a famous scream queen from the 1980s, finds herself pulled into the world of her mom's most famous movie. Reunited, the women must fight off the film's maniacal killer.

  Check out the trailer and let me know what you think.  This is one I am really looking forward to!   THE FINAL GIRLS has a release date set for October 9th of this year.

DVD Review: i-LIVED (2015)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2949196/?ref_=nv_sr_1i-LIVED
Directed by
Distributed by XLrator Media

  I recently got the privilege of checking out a new horror film called i-LIVED.  This was a very interesting film with a fun interactive experience...more on that later.  Here is the basic plot synopsis from the film's press release:

 Josh Fosse is a 20-something guy whose life is going nowhere. His girl left, his rent is late, and he lacks a real job. He is trying to make it as an app reviewer online and decides to review a self help app called i-Lived for fun. He's signs on and immediately his life turns around. He meets the girl of his dreams and he gets a job offer he can't refuse. Convinced it's him and not the app, he signs out... and loses everything. He signs on again but this time the terms are different, the app is asking him to do things that are out of his moral comfort zone... but essential to becoming the success the app tells him he can be

  This is one of the better films I have seen this year.  It kept me thoroughly entertained and I honestly don't have a negative thing to say about it.   The acting was superb by all involved and the film was shot very well.  The film has a very intriguing story which was very fun to watch pan out.    What made this film extra fun was the interactive "Second Screen" experience.   By downloading the i-LIVED app from your smartphone's app store, you will have access to this interactive experience that runs parallel with the film.  You will get [fake] text messages throughout the film, just like the ones that are being sent to the main character on screen!  The interactive app also utilizes your phone's flash, and speakers for some very spooky scares.  Also, there are little inside jokes sent to your phone during a scene, some of which are laugh out loud funny!  It would be a lot different watching this movie without the app, but I bet it would still be pretty enjoyable.   I think this app adds an extra element to the film, though, that you really need to check out.  I can really see this idea going places and improving, especially as our phones and tablets continue to improve.

  Be sure to check out i-LIVED as soon as you can.  The DVD is out now on DVD from XLrator Media.

Check out the trailer for the upcoming film, BITE!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4264426/ Ugh..this film looks downright disgusting.  So, naturally I can't wait to see it!  The film is called BITE and is being directed by .  The film was produced by Black Fawn Films and Breakthrough Entertainment.  Here is the basic plot of the movie from the film's official website:

While on her bachelorette party getaway, Casey, the bride to be, gets a seemingly harmless bite from an unknown insect. After returning home with cold feet, Casey tries to call off her wedding but before she's able to, she starts exhibiting insect like traits. Between her physical transformation and her wedding anxiety, Casey succumbs to her new instincts and begins creating a hive that not only houses her translucent eggs, but feeds on the flesh of others. As her transformation becomes complete, Casey discovers that everything can change with a single bite.

  The film is playing film festivals now and there have been reports of people fainting and getting sick (puking) from watching this film.  If that isn't an excellent incentive to watch this film, then I don't know what is!   Hopefully I will have more info on a release date in the near future.

Blu-ray review: HORSEHEAD (2014)

http://www.artsploitationfilms.com/film/horsehead/HORSEHEAD
Directed by
Distributed by  Artsploitation Films

  Wow.  This is a visually stunning film, and an amazing achievement in film making in my opinion.  I have to admit, though, I can't say I understand it 100%.  Heck, I'm about 50/50 on understanding this thing.  The film is called HORSEHEAD and it is a basically a nightmare shown on film.   Here is the basic plot synopsis from the Artsploitation Films website:

  Haunting and horrific, surreal and shocking, HORSEHEAD is a new horror-fantasy that pays tribute to the classic European shockers of Dario Argento and Mario Bava while also remaining a unique film with its own vision, delivering unforgettable images that both disturb and enchant. Director Romain Basset’s tale follows beautiful young Jessica (Lilly-Fleur Pointeaux) as she returns to her family’s countryside estate for her grandmother’s funeral. Haunted by recurring nightmares of a horse-headed monster, Jessica attempts to put her studies of “lucid dreaming” to good use, as she semi-consciously navigates through this dream landscape, trying to discover the secrets behind this sinister apparition. But Jessica must also cope with a hostile mother (The Beyond‘s Catriona MacColl), and the growing realization that the death of her grandmother was actually a suicide triggered by the woman’s past traumas and visions. HORSEHEAD is a feverish, ethereal journey through the world of nightmares.

  If you are a into visuals and symbolism, then this is definitely a film for you!  The film is shot beautifully with some amazing sets.   The acting is very good from everyone involved.   Like I mentioned above, I didn't understand a lot of this film, it's one I will need to watch a 2nd or even 3rd time to understand all the symbolism probably.  Even with the lack of understanding a lot of the film, that didn't take away any of the enjoyment factor whatsoever.  Basically, you can sit back watch and enjoy the visuals on display, some of which are beautiful, and some of which are downright terrifying.

  This is the first feature film from director Romain Basset, and is an amazing first effort in my opinion.  I can't wait to see what his future projects consist of!  This is a must see in my opinion. Check it out and let me know what you think.  If you've already seen the film, please leave a comment below and let us know what you thought of the film.

DVD Review: LAKE PLACID VS. ANACONDA (2015)

http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/lakeplacidvsanaconda/LAKE PLACID VS. ANACONDA
Directed by
Distributed by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

  With a title like that, it's gotta be good...right?  Well, LAKE PLACID VS. ANACONDA won't be winning any awards any time soon, but it achieves what it sets out to do which is entertain you with some mindless crocodile vs. giant snake action!   Here is the basic plot synopsis from the film's press release:

  Anacondas large enough to crush an SUV. Crocodiles strong enough to leap onto speedboats. When they’re not hunting for human prey, they’re more than willing to take on each other. Get ready for a non-stop bloodbath unlike anything you’ve seen before in this heart-pounding battle between mutated crocodiles and genetically engineered anacondas. Packed with hot sorority girls, big guns, and jaws massive enough to swallow a human in one bite, this is one screaming good time!

  If you're wondering what to expect with this film, keep in mind this was made for the SyFy  network.  If you are familiar with the movies they've been putting out lately, you will know exactly what you are in for with this film.   Let me start by saying that most of the acting in this movie is atrocious...except for horror icon Robert Englund, who is way out of his league with this film in my opinion.  But, we don't really watch these movies for the characters and the acting do we.  With a film like this, we are here for some great crocodile and anaconda action, and luckily, the film delivers when it comes to that.

  Now again, realizing this is a SyFy movie, the creature effects are not something you will find in a big budget blockbuster film.   The animals are all CGI and it shows, very badly at some times.  If you can keep from letting that bother you, then you will be able to sit back and just enjoy the crazy croc vs. snake carnage!  The crocodile kills people, the anaconda kills people, then they fight each other in a crazy reptile title match!   While it's not the best of the LAKE PLACID or ANACONDA series, it is still a very fun creature feature that should keep you entertained for the entire running time.

LAKE PLACID VS. ANACONDA is available now on DVD from Sony Home Entertainment.

"FEAR, INC." Commences Production in Los Angeles

Check out this press release I recently got.  Sounds like we are in for a real treat with this one!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.lonesuspect.com/films-portfolio/fear-inc-2/LOS ANGELES, Aug. 6, 2015 –Lone Suspect announces that production will commence today in Los Angeles on its latest feature film FEAR, INC.  Written by Luke Barnett and directed by Vincent Masciale, who are best known for their viral videos on Will Ferrell’s “Funny or Die,” the film stars Lucas Neff (“Raising Hope”), Caitlin Stasey (TV’s “Reign”), Chris Marquette (ALPHA DOG) and Stephanie Drake (“Mad Men”).  The supporting cast is rounded out with Naomi Grossman (“American Horror Story”), Ashlynn Yennie (THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE), Patrick Renner (THE SANDLOT), Ronnie Gene Blevins (THE DARK KNIGHT RISES) and Richard Riehle (OFFICE SPACE).

Luke Barnett, Vincent Masciale along with Heather Kasprzak and Natalie Masciale are producing FEAR, INC. under their Lone Suspect banner. Gabriel Cowan and John Suits of New Artists Alliance as well as Tanner Thomason and Frank Masciale are executive producing the film.

FEAR, INC. follows a company of degenerates who can be hired for a premium to bring your greatest fears to life. But when horror junkie Joe Foster's customized scare seemingly begins, he and his friends must decide if this company is there to scare them, or make them pawns in their own sick game.

"With the self referential humor of films like SCREAM and CABIN IN THE WOODS and our background with Funny or Die, the goal is to add a large comedic element to the dark material," said director Vincent Masciale.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 I love the idea of the comedic element being added to the horror film.  If done right, it can make for an extremely enjoyable film!   Hopefully I can post more news on this new film as it becomes available.

DVD Review: THE WIFE KILLER (1976)

http://www.cavd.com/product.php?productid=2563THE WIFE KILLER
Written by
Directed by (as Dacosta Carayan)
Distributed by Mondo Macabro / CAV Distributing

  I am a big fan of foreign horror films, but one country's films I am not very familiar with is Greece.   In fact, the only Greek horror film I could name you was ISLAND OF DEATH.  Well, now I can add a 2nd film to my Greek knowledge.   The film is called THE WIFE KILLER, or DEATH KISS as it was originally known.  I honestly don't think I would classify this as a true horror film.  It is more of a Giallo type crime film in my opinion.  Here is the basic plot of the film from the CAV website:

Penniless playboy Captain Jim is in hock to his rich older wife, Helen. She has even bought him the fancy yacht that now bears his name. But Jim does not want to be Helen’s toy boy any more. He wants to marry his lover, Laura. He pays a psychopathic killer of women to murder Helen so that he will inherit his wife’s millions. But the psycho killer has his own plans. Suspecting Jim will double cross him, he engineers a complex scheme that will give him the upper hand. Very much in the style of the violent and baroque “Giallo” thrillers from 1970s Italy, The Wife Killer is a twisted, shocking and brutal exploration of the devious male psyche. Previously only released to cinemas in a cut version, this is the first official DVD release of the film in the U.S., complete and uncensored.

 As I mentioned, this is not what I would really refer to as a true "horror" film, although there is a lot of killing and blood.  The film is a crime drama, and a very good one at that.  I must admit, when I first started watching this film, I was afraid it was going to be a very boring, dull film, as it starts off very slow.  Stick with it, though, and you will be rewarded with a very entertaining film, full of plot twists and some great double crossing by the likes of the killer.

 While this won't be for everyone, if you are a fan of crime dramas and particularly 70's Italian Giallo films, you will definitely want to give this film a watch.

THE WIFE KILLER will be available on DVD August 18th, and will contain the following special features:

- Brand new transfer from film negative
- Uncut Version
- Greek/English audio choices
- Newly created optional subtitles
- Extensive production notes
- Interview with producer
- Documentary on Greek Cult Cinema
- Trailers
- Mondo Macabro previews

Check out the visual stunning trailer for ATTACK ON TITAN

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2072230/?ref_=nv_sr_2
  I recently found a very cool horror website called  "theblood-shed.com".    While browsing this site recently, I ran across a trailer for a movie called ATTACK ON TITAN.   The trailer blew me away with it's visuals.   Here is the official synopsis taken from theblood-shed.com website:

  The sudden arrival of the Titans—mysterious, gigantic humanoid creatures who devour human beings one after the other—brings mankind to the brink of extinction. Fast-forward to more than 100 years later. What remains of the human population now live in relative peace behind massive walls that were erected to defend against the Titans. Yet, once again, that peace is shattered when a Titan measuring over 5o meters tall smashes through the wall, allowing a horde of other Titans to enter.
  The Protagonist, Eren, had been resigned to life confined behind these walls. “Nothing I do would make a difference,” he thought. But when he joins the “Outer Wall Restoration Team” set up to fight against the Titans, he is reunited with Mikasa, a childhood friend and someone he long rued not being able to save. The new recruits embark on a mission to obtain explosives, which have become rare and precious, before getting past the waves of Titans to plug the gaping hole in the wall, with humanity’s survival on the line. Will there be a future for Eren and Mikasa… and for mankind itself?

  I knew nothing about this title, but upon further research found that is based on off of a anime comic and TV series of the same name.   This film looks remarkable.  It's being released August 1st in Japan.  Hopefully we will get a chance to see this one here in the states very soon!  Check out the trailer and let me know what you think!

Blu-ray Review: SPIDER BABY (1967)

http://mvdb2b.com/s/SpiderBabyBluRayDVD/MVD7366BRSPIDER BABY
a.k.a. THE MADDEST STORY EVER TOLD
Written & Directed by
Distributed by Arrow Films / MVD Entertainment

  Wow!  How did I go this long without seeing this film?!   SPIDER BABY is one of those weird cult classics that I had always heard about, but had never seen.  In fact, I've had an earlier DVD release of this film in my collection for years, but had yet to watch it.   Well, that DVD is obsolete now thanks to the great folks over at Arrow Films.  Arrow continues to put out some of the nicest Blu-ray releases I have ever seen, and this one is no different.   Here is the synopsis of the film from the MVD website:

  The credits dub this "the maddest story ever told", a promise that's well on the way to being fulfilled in the opening scene alone, when Virginia traps and kills a hapless deliveryman in her makeshift web. She's one of three siblings who suffer from a unique genetic disorder that causes them to regress back to childhood, while retaining the physical strength and sexual maturity of adults. Lon Chaney Jr gave one of his most memorable late performances as Bruno, their guardian and protector, who has managed to cover up their crimes until two distant relatives lay claim to their house. When they insist on moving in, Bruno has to cross his fingers and hope that the 'children' behave towards their new guests... This was the first solo feature by Jack Hill, whom Quentin Tarantino dubbed "the Howard Hawks of exploitation filmmaking", and it remains one of his wildest and weirdest.

 This is definitely one of the weirdest and wildest films I have seen, and that is saying a lot!  I can't imagine how audiences reacted to this film back in the late 60's when it was originally released.  I am sure they had never seen anything like this before!

  While I sometimes shy away from older, black & white, horror films, I almost always end up really enjoying them.   The black & white is so nostalgic and it's a lot of fun coming across an old classic like this that I haven't seen before.   The picture quality looks amazing on this blu-ray.  Arrow always does a remarkable job with their blu-ray transfers, and this one is no different.

  I knew I was going to like this film from the opening credits, and the opening scene cemented this for me.  In the opening scene we see young Virginia lure a delivery man up to her house and to the window.  Little does the man know he is the 'bug' to Virginia's 'spider' in her sick and twisted game.   Once the 'spider' catches the 'bug', it's all over for poor Mr. delivery man.  Virginia, Elizabeth, and Ralph  (played by Sid Haig of THE DEVIL'S REJECTS) make up the trio of kids who do some awful things.  They are all mentally unstable and no one is safe when they are around!

  This was such a fun, weird, creepy film.   This is one I will definitely be watching again in the near future.  I highly recommend this one.  If you have never seen SPIDER BABY, do yourself a favor and pick up this new Blu-ray release asap!

 SPIDER BABY is available now on blu-ray from Arrow Films.  It is being distributed here in the U.S. by MVD Entertainment.  Arrow films always contain tons of special features/extras, and this release is no different.  Special Features on SPIDER BABY include:

*  High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentation of the main feature, available in the UK for the first time
*  Original 2.0 Mono Audio (Uncompressed PCM on the Blu-ray)
