DVD Review: GALLOWWALKERS (2012)

GALLOWWALKERS
Written & Directed by
Distributed by Lionsgate Entertainment

  Last night I watched the film GALLOWWALKERS starring Wesley Snipes.
I am a big Wesley Snipes fan and hadn't seen him in anything in a long time, so I was super excited to see him back in a movie, and the fact it was a horror movie was even better!   Here is the basic plot of the film from the Lionsgate website:

  A mysterious gunman, Aman (Snipes), is the son of a nun who breaks her covenant with God to ensure his survival. This act brings a curse upon Aman - all those that die by his gun will return. Soon, he is hunted by a gang of his undead former victims, led by the vicious Kansa. Aman enlists Fabulos, a new young warrior, to fight by his side.

  I am usually not a big fan of westerns, but if a western contains zombies and tons of great gore, then count me in!   I thought GALLOWWALKERS was a lot of fun.   The plot was a little hard to follow at some points, and I didn't understand the inclusion of certain characters, but the film kept me entertained the entire time.

  The movie is very well made with some beautiful scenery and some excellent cinematography.  The acting is very good overall, but I have to admit, Snipes character is pretty one dimensional and flat.   The other actors were all very good, but the real star of this film to me was the gore.  The film had much more gore than I expected, some of which was some of the most brutal I have seen in a film in a long time.  Watch the trailer and you will get to see a scene where Snipes' character rips the head off of a zombie, complete with spinal cord still attached!  It was basically like watching a movie version of the Mortal Kombat finishing move!  Very awesome on many levels!

  I would definitely recommend this film.  The film will be available on DVD, Digital Download, and Video on Demand on August 6th.  The DVD contains the following Special Features:

*  Includes Digital UltraViolet copy of the film
*  Behind the Scenes "making of" featurette With Cast/Crew Interviews
*  Trailer Gallery

DVD Review: NAZIS AT THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (2012)

NAZIS AT THE CENTER OF THE EARTH
Directed by
Distributed by The Asylum Home Entertainment

  Ok, let's be honest. The Asylum isn't exactly known as the company that creates blockbuster movies. In fact, they are known as the company that makes films based on blockbuster movies.  They are usually cheap knock-offs with crazy plot lines, and sub-par acting.  Well, NAZIS AT THE CENTER OF THE EARTH.....is no different.  It's exactly what you would expect from an Asylum film
  Ok, maybe I am being a little hard on this film, with all it's faults, I guess I need to admit that it was fun, and that is what movies are for!  Before I go into any further detail, here is the plot of the film from the film's imdb page:

  Researchers in Antarctica are abducted by a team of masked storm troopers. They are dragged deep underground to a hidden continent in the center of the earth. Here Nazi survivors, their bodies a horrifying patchwork of decaying and regenerated flesh, are planning for the revival of the Third Reich

  So the film starts off with some bad CG gunfire and explosions, but when  the research team is taken to the center of the earth, there is actually some pretty cool scenery and cool futuristic landscapes.   The film actually has some pretty good gore effects, some of which are actually practical effects as opposed to CG.  At least they look like practical effects to me.  One in particular is a man who has his face skin peeled off while he is still alive.

  The dialog is ok, but is pretty cheesy at some points.  The acting is actually better than most Asylum films I have to admit. Dominique Swain and Jake Busey do a pretty good job headlining the film.

 As crazy as the film's plot is, nothing prepares you for the end of the film, when a giant Hitler/Robot makes an appearance.  Apparently the Nazis have kept Hitler's body (or at least his head, since that is all we see) and have fused it with a mechanical robot body, creating one crazy RoboNazi!!

 So, overall, not a great movie by any means, but probably fun if you have a group of friends over and just want to have a good time and laugh a lot.   The movie is available now on DVD and contains the following special features:

*  Original Widescreen Presentation
*  5.1 Surround Sound
*  The Making of "Nazis at the Center of the Earth"
*  Gag Reel
*  Trailers
*  Director's Commentary

Check out the crazy trailer for the upcoming film, THANATOMORPHOSE

  Have you heard of the film, THANATOMORPHOSE?   Can you pronounce the title?  I can't! But I watched the trailer and this film looks revolting and nasty, so obviously I am dying to see it!!  I hadn't heard a thing about this film, but I ran across an article about it while browsing one of my favorite horror sites, Dreadcentral.com.  Here is the description of the film from the dreadcentral.com article:

A Cronenbergian smorgasbord of rancid flesh and sexual gratification, Thanatomorphose, by Canadian director Eric Falardeau, picks up where Nekromantic left off. “Discovering several bruises on her body after a night of rough sex, a young woman is shocked as, rather than heal itself, her body begins rotting from the inside out. She faces a terrifying and gory descent into a living death, as her putrefying body begins to literally ‘fall off the bone’.”
A strange and claustrophobic tale of sexuality, horror and bodily fluids, Thanatomorphose will not only make you wince, but is strangely uplifting in its take on mortality. The title means the physical signs of a body’s decomposition, caused by death.

The website doesn't list a date for a U.S. release yet, but hopefully it will be sooner than later!  Hopefully I can get my hands on a DVD soon and do a full review of the film here on the 4H website.  Do yourself a favor and go watch this trailer now!  BUT...be advised, this trailer is NOT SAFE FOR WORK -- it includes crazy gore and nudity.  Enjoy!

Check out the upcoming horror fan documentary, FANTASM!

  I recently got an email containing a press release for the upcoming documentary, FANTASM.  The film was written & directed by .

Here is some info about the film from the press release:

FANTASM explores the bonds formed by the close-knit community of fans who attend horror conventions.

In addition to a variety of devoted genre fans, Fantasm features insight from several popular horror actors and filmmakers, including Tom Atkins (Escape from New York), Heather Langenkamp (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Amanda Wyss (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Lloyd Kaufman (The Toxic Avenger), Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2) and more.

After being shot at six different conventions throughout the country, Fantasm is currently in post-production. "The film is being submitted to festivals and conventions," Kuchta elaborates. "We're really excited to be releasing it in the fall when the convention season and the horror community are thriving full-force."

  This sounds like a very cool project.   I have been to numerous horror conventions and have met a lot of great folks at them, so I know about the close-knit community of horror fans.  I don't know any other genre of film that has fans as passionate as the horror genre.  I think this will be a cool look into the fans of the horror community!

Check out the trailer for the Irish horror/comedy creature film, GRABBERS!

  IFC Midnight films recently released this new horror/comedy film, GRABBERS.  It looks like a fun film and will do for creature films what SHAUN OF THE DEAD did for zombie films!  Here is the plot synopsis from the film's official website:

  Directed by Jon Wright, GRABBERS tells the story of Ciarán O’Shea, a charming but heavy-drinking local Garda who is tasked with greeting Lisa Nolan, a straight-laced young officer who has just arrived to a small fishing village off the West coast of Ireland. Not that there’s much for them to do, aside from dealing with the occasional drunk, and that’s usually O’Shea himself. But strange doings are afoot: the crew of a fishing boat disappears, whales start appearing dead on the shore, a local lobsterman catches a strange tentacled creature in his trap. Soon it becomes clear to Garda O’Shea and Nolan that there’s something big out there, and that it’s hungry. It’s time to rally the villagers, arm the troops…and head to the pub! Starring Richard Coyle (W.E, THE WHISTLEBLOWERS) and Ruth Bradley (LOVE/HATE, TITANIC) GRABBERS is a monster comedy from Irish screenwriter Kevin Lehane.

The film is not out on DVD yet for the U.S, but is available now on Amazon Instant Video and iTunes!

Pre-order the awesome "Friday The 13TH" documentary, CRYSTAL LAKE MEMORIES: THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF FRIDAY THE 13TH

  FRIDAY THE 13TH is one of my all time favorite movie franchises.  Scratch that, it is my #1 favorite horror movie franchise!  I love everything about it, and Jason Voorhees has always been my favorite horror film villain.  Needless to say, I was super excited to read the press release about this new documentary,  CRYSTAL LAKE MEMORIES:  THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF FRIDAY THE 13TH.  The film is based on the book by the same title which is one of the most comprehensive books about a film franchise you will ever read.   I am thrilled about the news of this Blu-ray/DVD release!
Here is the press release from the documentary's official website:

  LOS ANGELES, Ca., July 7, 2013—Panic Productions and Hutson Ranch Media have launched pre-orders for Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th on its official website. The documentary, inspired by Peter M. Bracke’s bestselling book of the same name, promises to be the definitive retrospective on the long-running Friday the 13th franchise.
  The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack showcases the extensive feature, which runs approximately 420 minutes. When purchased through the website, buyers will also receive a bonus DVD with nearly 4 hours of extended interview material. The film will be officially released on August 27, 2013 via 1428 Films with a list price of $29.95.
  Corey Feldman (star of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter) narrates Crystal Lake Memories, which features interviews with approximately 150 cast and crew members from all twelve Friday the 13th films and the syndicated television series, many of whom have never before appeared in on-camera interviews. Interview subjects include Kane Hodder, Robert Englund, Tom Savini, Danielle Panabaker, Sean S. Cunningham, Derek Mears, Betsy Palmer, Wes Craven, Robert Shaye, Alice Cooper and many more.
  Crystal Lake Memories is written and directed by Daniel Farrands and produced by Thommy Hutson, who previously teamed up for the award-winning Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy.
"As lifelong fans, we couldn't let 2013 pass us by without giving Jason his due," explains Farrands. "I hope that Crystal Lake Memories will serve as a fitting tribute to one of this generation's most iconic bogeymen."
  "We're thrilled that we are able to bring all the incredible stories from the cast and crew to life, showcasing why the Friday the 13th franchise is still going strong decades later," adds Hutson. "It's a testament to the blood, sweat and tears that went into making summer camp, and eventually a hockey mask, both terrifying and fun."
  In the 33 years since the original Friday the 13th premiered in May of 1980, the slasher franchise has grown to include twelve feature films, a television series, novels, comic books, merchandise and memorabilia. In addition to staggering box office success, the films turned Jason Voorhees and his signature hockey mask into a pop culture icon. Now fans can get an in-depth look that spans the entire history from those involved.

  This is going to be a spectacular release.  The film comes in a 3 disc set (1 Blu-ray, 2 DVDs) with a run time of 420 minutes!  You are gonna get your money's worth with this set, as the price is only $29.95!  And...if you pre-order your Blu-ray/DVD set from the official website, you will get a bonus DVD packed with over 4 additional hours of bonus interviews!   Don't pass this opportunity up, pre-order your copy today!

Blu-ray Review: HANDS OF THE RIPPER (1971)

HANDS OF THE RIPPER
Directed by
Distributed by Synapse Films / CAV

 If you are a fan of Hammer horror films, you will definitely want to take a look at HANDS OF THE RIPPER.  This is one Hammer film I had never seen before.  Synapse Films has recently released this film onto a great Blu-ray/DVD combo pack so now is the perfect time to check out this great film!   Here is the plot synopsis of the film courtesy of the Synapse Films website:

An infant girl watches in horror as her father, the infamous “Jack the Ripper”, brutally murders her mother. Years later, young Anna (Angharad Rees) is now under the care of a fake psychic and has been forced into prostitution. At the end of a séance one evening, a woman is mysteriously killed. Dr. John Pritchard (Eric Porter) suspects Anna is the murderer but cannot understand how she could do this unspeakable act. Using new Freudian psychoanalysis techniques, Pritchard experiments on Anna and discovers a shocking secret. The spirit of the “Ripper” is alive and well, and may be possessing his own daughter! Can this evil be stopped before it’s too late?

  The back cover states that this film is widely recognized as one of the most gruesome Hammer horror films ever made. It wasn't really gruesome by today's standards, but considering the film came out in 1971, I bet it was quite shocking for it's time. Don't get me wrong, the film still holds up very well, even by today's standards.

  If you have never seen a Hammer film, this would be a great one to start with.  The plot is easy to follow and stays suspenseful throughout the film.  The film reminds me of Italian giallo films, but mixed with a slasher film.  In fact, this could be a film that paved the way for all the slasher films of the 1980's.  The film has some very painful death scenes, including the final scene of the film that was shot very well.   The film is very stylish in the way the it was filmed, especially the opening credits scene.  The use of pauses during the opening flashback scene of Anna as a young girl was a very cool effect.

  HANDS OF THE RIPPER is available now from Synapse films on a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, and includes the following special features:

*  THE DEVIL'S BLOODY PLAYTHING:  POSSESSED BY THE HANDS OF THE RIPPER -- Featurette
*  SLAUGHTER OF INNOCENCE:  THE EVOLUTION OF HAMMER GORE -- Motion Still Gallery
*  U.S. Television Introduction

THE DEAD 2: INDIA to premiere as the opening film at Film 4 FrightFest in London!

 If you are a fan of zombie movies and have not yet seen 2010's THE DEAD, you are missing out on one of the greatest zombie films ever made.  I kid you not.  I loved that film and it was on par with the early zombie films of George Romero. The film was written & directed by the Ford Brothers,  &  and takes place during a zombie outbreak in Africa.  I did a review of this film last year, you can see that review by clicking here.

 Well, the Ford Brothers are back with their follow up film, THE DEAD 2:  INDIA.  Seems as though Africa isn't the only area effected by the zombie outbreak!  I did a post a few months ago about this new film and posted the trailer.  You can see that post by clicking here.

  I just got news that THE DEAD 2:  INDIA will be premiering as the opening film at Film 4 FrightFest in London on August 22!   To help promote the film, there is a national contest going on where you can win tickets to the premiere in London or lots of other prizes!  Here is a description of the contest I just received by email:

  As part of our promotional campaign in advance of the film’s release, we’ll be giving away two tickets to the FrightFest premiere.

  The winner will also get to attend the premiere's after-party; where they'll be introduced to The Dead 2's directors, Howard and John Ford, as well as the film's star Joseph Millson. To enter the contest, fans simply need to tell us what they would do in order to #StayAliveFacebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Vine, etc), using #StayAlive.

A  longside the grand prize, we're also offering ongoing smaller prizes, including signed copies of The Dead 2 director Howard Ford’s book Surviving the Dead. Howard’s book is a harrowing and at times hilarious blow-by-blow account of the trials and tribulations involved in the production of the Ford Brothers previous feature,The Dead, which was filmed in Africa.

  We will also be offering select, one-of-a-kind props from The Dead and The Dead 2 as prizes. These actual props were used on-set in Africa and India and can be seen in both films. Beyond being just mere memorabilia, these props are genuine artifacts of zombie film history and will be coveted by fans of the zombie film genre.

So there ya go!  Sounds simple enough and a cool way to win some awesome prizes!!   Check out the trailer for THE DEAD 2:  INDIA then get yourself entered to win some awesome prizes!

Check out the amazing trailer for the Hong Kong Vampire film, RIGOR MORTIS

  As most of you know, I love foreign horror films....especially Japanese and Asian horror films.  I'm not talking about the mainstream films like JU-ON/GRUDGE, RINGU type films.  I love the smaller, lesser known asian films that are just flat out crazy and full of spraying blood and gore.  I'm talking about films such as HELLDRIVER, TOKYO GORE POLICE, ICHI THE KILLER, etc.  Well, I might have a new one to add to that list with this new film called RIGOR MORTIS.  Here is the basic plot of the film from imdb.com:

  In this eerie and chilling, contemporary, action/special effects laden homage to the classic Chinese vampire movies of the 1980's, writer-director-producer, Juno Mak makes his feature directorial debut. Co-produced by J-Horror icon Takashi Shimizu, and reuniting some of the original cast members of the classic Mr. Vampire series, RIGOR MORTIS is set in a creepy and moody Hong Kong public housing tower whose occupants we soon discover, run the gamut from the living to the dead, to the undead, along with ghosts, vampires and zombies

  So, what could make a vampire movie better?  Throwing in some ghosts and zombies, of course!!  Sounds like a winner to me!   Check out the ultra cool trailer...the visuals in this film look amazing.  This is the directorial debut of , and it looks like he might be hitting a home run his first time up to bat!  The film is being distributed by Fortissimo Films, and the website says it is in post-production now.  As soon as I hear about a release date, I will let you know for sure.  Until then, watch the trailer and let me know what you think by leaving a comment below!

Check out the newest film from Kerosene Films, KILLING MR. RIGHT

  I just got a press release from Kerosene Films about their latest film titled, KILLING MR. RIGHT.  You might remember Kerosene Films as the production company behind the indy splatter classic, SPIRIT CAMP.   I did a review of that film a couple of years ago...you can see that review here.

  This latest film is a psychological thriller and stars Kerry Beyer, Brittney Karbowski, and introduces Elizabeth Jackson.  The film begins production in Houston, Texas on July 17th of this year.

  According to the press release, the film is a twisted thriller reminiscent of AMERICAN PSYCHO and FATAL ATTRACTION.  Here is what Mr. Beyer has to say about this new film:

 "This film is disturbing... it gets under your skin and you don't know who you can trust,". "It takes sadistic to a whole new level, and you'll question how well you know your significant other."

    Sounds like a pretty cool project...I am looking forward to this one for sure! The film is slated for a DVD release sometime in 2014

  I will pass on any news/info I hear about the film, but you can also keep up to date by checking out the Kerosene Films website, www.kerosenefilms.com
