Help out the indiegogo.com campaign for the awesome website 80sCards.com!!

http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-us-spread-the-love-of-the-80-s

I just found an awesome project on indiegogo.com that I just have to share with the readers of this blog.  A man by the name of Marc Ferman is putting together an awesome new website called 80sCards.com.    This site will feature all of the awesome trading cards the 1980's had to offer, which includes some awesome horror related cards!  I love the old Fright Flicks cards, and hopefully this site will have some available for us fans!  Marc has started an indiegogo campaign to help raise funds to get the website up and running.  Here is a description about this project from Mr. Ferman himself:

LETS GO BACK TO THE 80'S!!!!!

For the past two years, I have been sharing my love of the 80's by hosting retro movie events in Miami, Florida.  Fans have joined me for big screen engagements of the "original" ROBOCOP, GOONIES, GREMLINS, BEETLEJUICE, BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE, CHILD'S PLAY, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4, plus many more.  I have hosted these screenings through my music and movie site Keepitclassic.com and the recently launched PopcornNights.com
One of my favorite 80's memories was collecting trading cards.  Anything from STAR WARS to HOWARD THE DUCK.  I have been wanting to launch a site that focused on these hard-to-find collectables, so I came up with 80sCards.com
I need is to build enough inventory to launch with and I need your help to do it.
80's movie lovers like myself are totally going to dig this site and if you help make it happen, I will have some most excellent perks for you.

Donate $10 - You will receive 1 surprise original pack of 80's movie cards
Donate $25 - You will receive 3 surprise original packs of 80's movie cards
Donate $50 - You will receive 8 surprise original packs of 80's movie cards
Donate $100 - You will receive 20 surprise original packs of 80's movie cards

The money you donate will go towards us tracking down and stocking up on these collectable cards.  The first of our awesome new inventory will we awarded to those of you who helped us create 80sCards.com

Other Ways You Can Help

Just because some of you cannot contribute, doesn’t mean you can’t help spread the word.  Use the Indiegogo share tools to let your friends know about my awesome campaign.

Thank You
Marc Ferman

DVD Review: DAWNA THE DEAD (Warning - Adults Only! 18+)

http://www.dawnaofthedead.net/MAIN.htmDAWNA THE DEAD
Written & Directed by
Distributed by Film Trauma

I had heard about this film for years, but never had the chance to check it out until now.   This is not the typical movie reviewed on the 4H blog, but I never pass up a zombie movie!  DAWNA THE DEAD is not just any zombie movie though, it's a zombie adult film...yes, it's zombie porn.  Here is the "plot" of the film from the Film Trauma website:

Eveningside cemetery rests over one of the 6 gates to hell. Dawna, a girl who can't let go of her dead boyfriend visits his grave every chance she gets, and the night of the big party is no exception. but what she doesn't know is that tonight the gate will open.

The term "plot" is saying a lot, as there really is not much to the movie in terms of the plot.  Basically zombies rise from the grave and have sex with all the girls that came to the cemetery for a party.  Apparently zombies have physical needs too...who knew?  In terms of a zombie movie, it is actually very well done considering I'm sure it had a minuscule budget.  The zombie effects look really good, even though some of the zombies are just masks that the actors wear.  The film is done in a very cool style, made to look like an older film from the 70's or 80's, complete with film scratches and flaw marks and even old creepy 80's style music that fits the film perfectly.   I actually really enjoyed the zombie part of this film, unfortunately, the sex scenes make up the majority of the film.

While most adult films are meant to arouse and stimulate the viewer, this one was made more to just shock the audience.   At least, I think (and hope) it was.  I can't imagine there are people out there that are genuinely aroused by the sight of a rotting zombie having sex with a woman, complete with nasty slime and green zombie juices! Yuck!!!  This might be the first adult film where you'll fast forward through the sex scenes to the get to the dialog parts! Ha!  It's true, I had to fast forward through most of the sex scenes in this film...they were just too gross for me.  But that is the point of this film, to disgust and shock, so the filmmakers succeeded there for sure!

It's hard to recommend this one, but if you think you've "seen it all", then you might want to check this out and I think you will find that you have not seen it all yet!  It's good for a laugh and a shock, that is for sure.    Be sure to check out the Blooper Reel in the special feature section for a good laugh as well.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water....along comes PIRANHA SHARKS!!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3400060/ I guess I thought we were done with all the crazy shark/piranha/octopus/dinocroc films for a while, but the fad is not over yet.  Up next is PIRANHA SHARKS from writer/director .  Here is the basic plot from the film's imdb.com page:

Great white sharks bio-engineered to be the size of piranhas with the purpose of living in rich peoples exotic aquariums, terrorize New York City when they get into the water supply and do what great white sharks do best.

This looks like it will be pretty goofy, but it could be a lot of fun!  Check out the trailer and let me know what you think!

Check out the trailer for the campy horror/comedy, YOU CAN'T KILL STEPHEN KING

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1691452/  I saw a post about this film a while back on Facebook, and I just got around to watching the trailer tonight.    I don't know how the movie is going to be, but the trailer is pretty funny.   Definitely worth checking out.  The movie is called YOU CAN'T KILL STEPHEN KING and is about a group of kids that go on a road trip to meet their favorite horror author, Stephen King.  For some reason that I can't tell from the trailer, the kids start getting killed off one by one.   The movie is full of Stephen King references which will be fun to spot as you watch the film I'm sure.

I can't find any sort of release date on this film....looks like their is a UK Region 2 DVD for sale, but I see no record of a Region 1 DVD.  Hopefully we will see one soon.  Watch the trailer and let me know what you think!

DVD Review: CHASTITY BITES (2013)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2145637/CHASTITY BITES
Directed by
Distributed by  Grand Entertainment Group

I knew nothing about this movie going into it.  When it arrived for review, the first thing I assumed was that it was a cheesy horror/comedy vampire film, turns out it is a smart, funny take of the legend of Elizabeth Bathory. the 16th Century countess who has been labeled the most prolific female serial killer of all time. CHASTITY BITES brings the legend to modern times at a local high school.  Here is the plot from the film's official website:

Notorious serial killer Elizabeth Bathory believed that bathing in virgin blood would keep her young and beautiful forever. Still alive today she’s found a perfect hunting ground for her “botox” as an abstinence educator in conservative America…but will a brave young blogger and reporter for the high school paper finally put an end to the “Blood Countess’s” reign of terror, and save her best friend from becoming the next victim?

This was a very fun movie, and I found myself enjoying this one much more than I expected.  It's a perfect mixture of a high school comedy like MEAN GIRLS or CLUELESS mixed with a  horror film.  The acting in the movie is excellent from all involved, but especially from the main two girls, played by Allison Scagliotti and Francia Raisa.  The movie is paced well with no real slow parts, and the film is written well with some great dialog.  Horror fans will enjoy the gore in this one, as new abstinence instructor "Liz Batho" slits the throats of young virgins to drain them of their blood which she uses to keep her young.

This isn't a hard core horror film by any means, even those that aren't big into horror will enjoy this movie I think.

CHASTITY BITES is available now on DVD and contains the following special features:

*  Official Trailer
*  Behind the Scenes Featurette

Check out the crazy trailer for NUIGULUMAR Z, aka GOTHIC LOLITA BATTLE BEAR!!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2849348/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 I am a huge fan of crazy Japanese horror films. The crazier, the better in my opinion, so this one looks right up my alley!  The movie is called NUIGULUMAR Z, aka GOTHIC LOLITA BATTLE BEAR!  The film was directed by , one of my favorite directors. His previous work includes THE MACHINE GIRL, ROBOGEISHA and MUTANT GIRLS SQUAD just to name a few.

Here is the basic plot of the film:

Yumeko Ayukawa, better known as Dameko, is a lolita fashion-clad girl who possesses the ability to merge with her pink teddy bear Buusuke to become ""Nuigulumar"". In her new form she must do battle against a villain named Takeshi who's using zombies in his plot to take over the world.

So the film is probably more of an action/adventure/fantasy film than a true horror film, but it's got zombies in it, so close enough!   Check out the trailer and let me know what you think.   The film was released in Japan last month, and there is currently no U.S. release date that I have seen.

Check out the awesome trailer for the new film, ZOMBEAVERS!!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2784512/ If you only see one zombie film this year, make it ZOMBEAVERS!!  With a name like that, it has to be good, right?  HA!  Well, if the film lives up to the trailer, then this is going to be an instant cult classic!!  How has there not been a film about zombie beavers before now?!   Here is the basic plot of ZOMBEAVERS from the film's imdb page:

ZOMBEAVERS is an action-packed horror/comedy in which a group of college kids staying at a riverside cabin are menaced by a swarm of deadly zombie beavers. A weekend of sex and debauchery soon turns gruesome as the beavers close in on the kids. Riding the line between scary, sexy and funny, the kids are soon fighting for their lives in a desperate attempt to fend off the hoard of beavers that attack them in and around their cabin.

This film looks hilarious, and super gory!  A great combination if done right!  There is no word yet on a release date, but hopefully we will be seeing this movie sooner than later.  I need to see this asap!!  Check out the trailer and let me know what you think.

DVD Review: SCARECROW (2013)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2071571/SCARECROW
Directed by:
Distributed by:  Cinedigm

I have to admit, when I saw this was a SyFy movie, I kinda cringed a little bit.  I had not seen any trailer or anything for this movie, so I didn't know what to expect, but I honestly didn't expect much.  Most of the SyFy movies lately have been pretty bad.   Some of the crazy shark movies have been fun, but most of the SyFy films are nothing to get too excited about.  I am happy to say that is not the case with SCARECROW.  SyFy has really stepped it up with what I think is one of the most original creature features made in years.   Here is the plot of the film from the movie's imdb page:

For generations, it was an urban legend that lived in the nightmares of children. Now, the season to rejuvenate the tale will revive a town's darkest fears. With the Scarecrow Festival on the horizon, school teacher Aaron Harris is doling out punishment for six students serving detention, including the moody Tyler, Goth girl Nikki, wrestling team captain Daevon, and straight-A student Jun. Their task: help Aaron's ex-girlfriend Kristen fix her family farm before it's sold. But the cornfields circling the farm come with a legend-and Tyler takes macabre delight in recounting the tale: It never sleeps, it never dies, it can't be stopped, hear their cries. The Scarecrow lives to kill us all. Keep it buried in the fall... When the kids play a terrifying game of cat and mouse in the cornfield with what they believe is a wild animal, Kristen tries to convince them that the Scarecrow is a very real creature of fierce strength and power, rejuvenated by the blood of its prey

At first the film seems like any other horror film, and the premise is not really that original, but the actual scarecrow creature was the best part of the film and was a very original concept design. At least it was to me. I had never seen anything like it.  I was expecting a guy in a dumb scarecrow costume and was not expecting much out of it.  Instead, the scarecrow in this film is a much darker, creepier, supernatural creature.  This was something I was not expecting and upon first seeing this creature, immediately made me sit up and give this film my full attention. Even with the scarecrow being completely computer generated,  it still looked good and it worked for me.

The acting in the film was good, most everyone in the film did a great job.  The film also has some good gore, although being a made for TV movie, they had to hold back a little bit with the kill scenes.  I would have loved if this was  not a TV movie where the filmmakers could have gone all out, but even so, this film still served it's purpose as a very entertaining horror film.  This is one I will be watching again very soon.  I highly recommend SCARECROW to any fans of creature features.

SCARECROW will be released on DVD February 25th

Happy Super Bowl Sunday and the lack of sports related horror films...

Super Bowl Sunday is finally here!  This is one of the few nights a year I won't be watching a horror related TV show or movie on the big screen!  Being the biggest football game of the year, it made me start wondering if there were any sports related horror movies out there.  I honestly couldn't come up with any off the top of my head.
With as many horror movies as there are, it seems like there is bound to be a sports related one, right?  Actually, as I am writing this, one just popped into my head!  I reviewed a baseball themed movie a while back called DEADBALL.  You can see that review here.  This same director also did another baseball themed film called BATTLEFIELD BASEBALL.  So, there have been a couple of Japanese baseball related horror films, but there has go to be more, right?
I googled sports related horror movies and came up with this cool list from Sportsgrid.com.  It is a list of the Top 8 Sports Related Death scenes in film.  Some of these are from horror films, some are from other, non horror films.

CLICK HERE to see the sportsgrid.com's Top 8 Sports Related Death Scenes List

It seems as though there just aren't too many sports related horror films.   The only other one I can think of is Kerry Beyer's SPIRT CAMP, which has to do with a cheerleading squad, which is somewhat sports related.

On a final note, I did find this movie while searching on the Upcoming Horror Movies website.  It's a movie called PLAY DEAD about a zombie football team!   Here is the actual plot description from the UHM website:
Set in a small football-obsessed town, where after a winning high school football team is murdered by a rival team, the coach looks to a local witch to bring the dead players back to life in hopes of making it in time for the big game.

Ha!  That sounds like a lot of fun.  PLAY DEAD is listed as "In Development", so it might not be out for a while.

Can you think of any more sports related horror movies?  Especially any that focus on the main sports of Football, Basketball, or Baseball?   Leave a comment below and let us know!

Well, enjoy the Super Bowl tonight and GO BRONCOS!!  :-)

February is WOMEN IN HORROR RECOGNITION MONTH !

http://womeninhorrormonth.tumblr.com/
Happy "Women in Horror Recognition Month"!  February is the month when we say to thanks to all the great women involved in the horror industry.   While most blogs will celebrate all the actresses and the female writers and directors, I decided to do something a little different today.
I want to recognize and say "thank you" to a different type of female involved in horror, the female horror blogger!  Being a horror blogger myself, I am little biased towards these great ladies I guess!!
So here are a few of my favorite horror blogs, run by some great horror lovin' gals!!   Stop by their blogs and give them a look if you haven't already.

http://dayofwoman.blogspot.com/DAY OF THE WOMAN  - run by BJ Colangelo  -- touted as a blog "for the feminine side of fear", BJ's blog is like "Women in Horror Recognition Month" year round.   While a lot of her posts do focus on women, guys will still get lots of useful facts and good reads from this blog.  A lot of posts are very in-depth, you can tell BJ is very passionate about horror films and puts lots of time and effort into her posts.

http://dollarbinhorror.blogspot.com/DOLLAR BIN HORROR - run by Rhonny Reaper --  What started as a small blog run by Rhonny, this blog has morphed into a quite a website.  Rhonny now has a group of folks that help with reviews on her site.  This site features lots of great giveaways, and even has it's own radio call in show!

http://killerkalyn.com/KILLER KALYN  - run by Kalyn Corrigan  -  this is an awesome blog that covers all sorts of territory.   Kalyn has to be one of the hardest working female bloggers out there.  Not only does she post new stuff daily, but sometimes she posts multiple articles on the same day!  Kalyn also has tons of great youtube videos of her interviewing some great horror actors and other people associated with the horror community.  Check this one out for sure!

http://finalgirl.blogspot.com/FINAL GIRL - run by Stacie Ponder - this blog focuses on slasher flicks of the 70's and 80's, but also covers some newer films as well.  My favorite thing about this blog are all the great pictures Stacie puts with all her posts.  There are tons of pics of old movie posters and some fun photo-shopped original pics.   This blog hasn't been updated since Dec. 6th though, let's hope the Final Girl has not written her Final Post!

THE HORROR DIGEST -  run by Andre Dumas  -- this is a great blog that doesn't just review horror films, but Andre discusses them in depth and focuses on certain aspects of the films, all with a great sense of humor.  Covering both new and older films, this blog has something for everyone.  Did I mention how funny Andre is?  This is a very fun blog to read!

http://thegirlwholoveshorror.blogspot.com/THE GIRL WHO LOVES HORROR - run by Michele  - the name of this blog says it all.  Michele loves horror movies and it shows!  This site is updated regularly, and features reviews on both older and newer films.  Michele discusses both mainstream films and smaller B-films and everything in between, all with a great writing style and unique sense of humor.

GRAVEYARD SHIFT SISTERS - run by Ashlee Blackwell -- this is a wonderful blog that focuses on the African-American view of horror films.  Here is some info about the blog from the blog's mission page:  This is an open space for Black women and other women of color to share their personal experiences and love for horror. To create another challenge to popular perceptions of nerdom, fandom, and most importantly Black female identity in regards to horror. The journalists, novelists, filmmakers, cosplayers, convention goers, and movie fans can tell their stories and challenge horror fandom to be just as progressive and transformative as some of our favorite horror texts.

This is just a sampling of the great female horror bloggers out there.  I'm sure there are tons more that I don't know about.  If you know a great horror blog run by a woman, or if you are a woman who runs a horror blog, leave a comment with a link to the blog so we can all check it out!   Thanks!!

DVD Review: MARK OF THE DEVIL

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065491/MARK OF THE DEVIL
Written & Directed by
Distributed by Cheezy Flicks Entertainment

I love old horror films, especially ones from the 70's and 80's.  They just don't make
them like that anymore.    MARK OF THE DEVIL is from 1970 and is truly a horror classic.  I had often hear of this film, but had never had the opportunity to check it out until now.  Here is the basic plot of the film from the Cheezy Flicks website:

Banned in many countries!  - Udo Kier is a witch hunter apprentice to Herbert Lom. Udo believes strongly in his mentor and in the ways of the church but loses faith when he catches Lom strangle a man to death for calling him impotent. Kier begins to see for himself that the witch trials are nothing but a scam of the church to seduce women, rob people of their land, money, and other personal belongings. in the end, the towns people revolt, Herbert Llom escapes and poor Udo is tortured to death by the towns people with the his own devices from the dungeon.  - Rated 'V' for violence - this film contains very strong graphic torture!

I was actually surprised at how well the torture scenes held up.  I assumed they would all be super cheesy and look just awful, considering the age of this film, but that was not the case.   The gore looks good and some of the  torture scenes are downright cringe-worthy, especially a scene of two women being burned alive at the stake, due to being accused of being witches.

The acting in this movie is pretty good from all actors.  The film reminds me of the old Hammer films, and some of the beautiful, busty actresses could easily be Hammer actresses.

At 96 minutes, the movie moves along well and has very few dull parts.  Overall, I would highly recommend this film.   This is a welcome addition to my DVD library, and is a film I will be watching again in the near future.

Cheezy Flicks has this DVD at the ridiculous price of only $3.99 at the time of this writing.  The DVD comes with a vomit bag, a recreation of the vomit bags handed out in theaters back when the movie was originally released.

Check out the Cheezy Flicks website for crazy cheap deals on this DVD and other great classic films!

Check out the trailer for the Danish Zombie film, ESCAPING THE DEAD

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3334746/
I recently got a press release for a new Zombie film called, ESCAPING THE DEAD.  I checked out the trailer and I have to say, I am pretty impressed with what I see.   Now I can tell this is a very low budget film, but sometimes, those can have more heart to them than the big budget films.  I think this could be that type of film.   One thing that struck me with the film was the gore, and from the looks of it the filmmakers use 100% practical effects.  That is huge bonus points right off the bat!
Here is some more detailed info about the film, from the official press release:

"Escaping the Dead" is inspired by a series of articles about the deathdrug "Krokodil" that was published about the same period of time when Ronald Poppo had his face eaten by a naked man hooked on bathsalt in Miami. It is the perfect zombie plot: a deathdrug that turns people into zombies.
The film has its starting point in a typical day for the lead character, David. David is the local marihuana pusher, but he is the kind of dealer that smokes more than he sells. In the meantime the country has been hit by a new deathdrug and when David and his partner in crime Ahmir is offered some exceptionally cheap cocaine they see it as an opportunity to earn big money at the big techno concert the following Friday, but the cocaine turns out to have a terrible side effect that creates a giant zombie outbreak that spreads across the entire Copenhagen. In the film we follow David and his bloody fight out of the city.

Directed by Martin Sonntag and Bastian Brinch Pedersen, the film stars Bastian Brinch Pedersen (who is also the co-director and producer of the film) as David, Rama Øzel as Ahmir, along with Daniel Hutera, Ali Öezkan, Iben Ma Bønnelycke, Nicolai Huan Nguyen, Camilla Ludvigsen and Kim Sønderholm ("Blood Fare", "The Winedancers", "Sinister Visions") playing Lars the policeman.

It looks like the film just came out in Denmark, so it will probably be a while before we see it here in the states.  But I have a feeling this will get picked up from a U.S. distributor very soon!  Check out the trailer and let me know what you think!

I saw this post on Facebook the other day, originally posted by a website called
HorrorHomework.com.  The post was a link to an article they did called "Horror Homework's 14 Most Wanted Films of 2014".  I checked out the article and there are some great movies in store for us in 2014.  I have heard of most of these, but some I had never heard of.  Horror Homework does a great job of giving you some info about each film and then a trailer for that film (if available).

Some of the movies listed I am most looking forward to are CIRCUS OF THE DEAD, THE GREEN INFERNO  (which sounds like a super hero movie, but is actually a cannibal film by Eli Roth), NURSE 3D, and THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 3.  Check out the full article and let me know which films you are most looking forward to this year!

Check out the trailer for the 1993 Australian horror film, BODY MELT

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106450/?ref_=nv_sr_1 I love finding obscure horror films that I have never heard of before.  I figure I know about most all horror movies, or have at least heard of them, but that is just not possible. With as many horror movies that have been made over the years, it is impossible to keep up with them all.  Here is one that I have never heard of before.  It's a 1993 Australian film called BODY MELT.
I found this while browsing the Horror Junkies Facebook page today.  Check out there page if you haven't before....it's got ton of great horror stuff on it.  Anyway, they said this film was influenced by the movies Bad Taste and Brain Dead.  If that is the case, then this is a movie I need to see for sure!
I checked out the trailer and it looks awesome!   Pretty cheesy, but still awesome!   Check out the trailer and let me know what you think.  If you have actually seen this movie, I would love to hear what you thought of it.  Leave a comment and let us know!

DVD Review: SANGUIVOROUS

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3070514/?ref_=fn_tt_tt_1SANGUIVOROUS
Directed by
Distributed by MVD Entertainment Group

I am a huge fan of Japanese horror films, and I do enjoy a good vampire flick from time to time, so I was very intrigued when I heard about the film SANGUIVOROUS.  It looked very interesting from the trailer, but as a full movie, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed.
Here is the basic plot of the film from the MVD website:

It incorporates a physical acting style that draws heavily from butoh, a form of Japanese dance. A young woman suffering strange hallucinations and physical ailments discovers that she is the descendant of an ancient line of European vampires, and she and her boyfriend are soon captured by older vampires and drawn into the darkness.

This is one of the strangest films I have seen in a long time.  I really am having a hard time thinking of how to review this one, because it was just so weird.   I can't say I liked it, but I didn't hate it either.  There are good parts and bad parts to this film, but most of it is just....too strange to even classify.  The film is basically a silent film, done in a very art house style.  There is some dialog, but most the time the viewer is just hit with crazy visuals and sounds.   The film is mostly black and white, with some parts looking old, like Nosferatu old, and some parts looking much more modern. The mixture of looks and style throughout the film is very strange to say the least.

I think this would have made a great short film, I think trying to stretch it out to a full length feature run time was too much.  A lot of the scenes started to feel repetitive to me.

I'm not sure if I can really recommend this one or not.  You might need to watch this and see for yourself and see what you think.  Is this film so well made it is a brilliant, or is it so poorly made it is awful?  I really don't know!  Maybe I just didn't get it.   If you have seen this film, please leave me a comment and let me know what you thought of the movie.  I am very interested to hear some other opinions on this one.

SANGUIVOROUS is available now on DVD from MVD Entertainment.

It's another Sunday without THE WALKING DEAD....

http://www.amctv.com/the-walking-dead/videos/dont-look-back-the-walking-dead

I always look forward to Sunday nights when THE WALKING DEAD is on...it seems like forever since the mid season finale when we saw some major changes for the group.  Mainly Herschel is gone and the prison has been destroyed.

Well, to tide you over until THE WALKING DEAD returns on February 9th, watch this short teaser trailer that AMC posted to show you some highlights of things to come.  It looks like this show is just going to get better and better.

DVD Review: TOAD ROAD

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2076372/?ref_=fn_tt_tt_1TOAD ROAD
Written & Directed by
Distributed by Artsploitation Films

This might be the hardest review I have ever had to write.  A review is easy to write if I love the movie, I can spend as much time as I want gushing over how good it was.  A review is easy to write if I hate a movie, I can say why I hate it, keep it short and move on.  The hardest kinds of reviews to write are about movies like this one.  I don't know if I liked it or hated it.  Ok, I definitely didn't hate it, but then I think about some parts an I loved it.  Very strange to say the least, and very strange is a great way to describe TOAD ROAD.  Here is a little bit about the film from the film's official press release from Artsploitation Films:

A different kind of American independent horror film, the hypnotic Toad Road, presented by Elijah Wood and his SpectreVision production company, unfolds like a hallucinatory cross between the sexual candor of Larry Clark and Harmony Korine, and the backwoods creep-out of The Blair Witch Project.
Young James kills time with his small town druggie friends, engaging in excessive chemical intake, until he meets sweet new arrival Sara. But just as James wants to abandon the narcotics life, Sara wants him to take her further into mind-altering experimentation...and she also wants him to introduce her to the sinister local legend of Toad Road, a spot deep in the forest that is apparently home to the Seven Gates of Hell.
Writer-director Jason Banker's film is a unique fusion of documentary-like realism, and otherworldly, haunting rural terror. Unlike any other film you'll see this year, Toad Road is a mesmerizing trip.

It's interesting that the press release mentioned Larry Clark, because the first thing that I thought of after watching this film was that it felt like an updated, newer version of Clark's 1995 film, KIDS.  The plot was lacking and it basically just showed the life of young kids on a daily basis.

The film is not really a horror movie at all. While it is marketed as such, it is much more of just a weird drama, although it does have some horror elements to it.    Mainly the film is a group of kids getting drunk and high and doing all sorts of foolish things.   A lot of the film resembles the JACKSASS TV show, with people punching each other for fun, and doing all sorts of pranks and such.

The last part of the film does get a little more into the horror aspect,  and I remember loving the ending.  It has a nice twist  and centers around the characters of James and Sarah go off to find the legendary "Toad Road", a section of the woods near them that people say can alter time.  Kinda confusing and pretty deep for a movie like this, this plot line felt a little out of place compared to the rest of the film, but this last part of the film also provided them most enjoyable part of the film in my opinion.

One thing this movie had going for it was the acting.  In fact, I don't even think these kids were acting, and I would not be surprised if I heard they were actually doing the drugs as shown in the film.  If these kids were acting, then they all deserve praise for such a fine job.  This film looked very realistic in all aspects.

If you liked KIDS, you should love this modern version.  It is different and weird, so anyone looking for a true horror film could be disappointed.  I recommend you check this one out though and make up your own mind.  I have a feeling everyone will get something different out of this film.   If you have seen TOAD ROAD, leave a comment below and let me know what you thought of the film.

Did you know FROM DUSK TILL DAWN is becoming a TV series?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3337194/?ref_=fn_tt_tt_4  I'm sure most horror fans are aware of this already, but a TV series is coming out called  FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, based on the 1996 film of the same name.  FROM DUSK TILL DAWN is one of my favorite horror flicks of all time, so I am super excited about the new TV spin off!

The show focuses on a Texas Ranger who is in pursuit of the infamous Gecko Brothers.   The new series if being directed by Robert Rodriguez , who directed the original film.  I might be skeptical about a TV series based on this film if someone else was doing it, but knowing Robert Rodriguez is directly involved insures me that this is going to be a great show!!  Hopefully this show will be popular and catch on, and then hopefully we might start seeing some great cameos from the original film's stars!  That would be really cool!

FROM DUSK TILL DAWN the series premieres March 11 on the El Ray Network.  Check the network website to see if you get that channel in your area.

Blu-ray Review: YOU'RE NEXT

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1853739/YOU'RE NEXT
Directed by:
Distributed by Lionsgate

I remember seeing the trailers for YOU'RE NEXT when this film came out in the theaters, but I never got a chance to see this one.  I heard good things about this film when it came out, but I'm really surprised I didn't hear more.  This is one of the most enjoyable horror films I have seen in years!  Here is the basic plot from the Lionsgate website:

Aubrey and Paul Davison decide to celebrate their wedding anniversary by inviting their four children and their significant others to a family reunion at their remote and slightly rundown weekend estate. But the family reunion goes awry when their home comes under siege by a mask-wearing team of crossbow-bearing assailants. The family has no idea who’s attacking them, why they’re under attack, or if the attackers are inside or outside the cavernous, creaking house. All they know for certain is that nobody is safe.

As I mentioned, this is one of the better horror movies I have seen in years.  This film is chock full of good scares, great gore, and even some dark humor.  The film is very well done, with great acting by most all actors involved.  The style of the movie is very cool, with a great use of music to intensify some scenes, and then eerily contrast with some others.  The 1977 song, "Looking For The Magic" by the Dwight Twilley Band is a very light, upbeat song, but is used in scenes that are very disturbing.  The horror onscreen contrasting with the bubbly pop song really makes an impression.  I liken this to the way the old Stealers Wheel song, "Stuck In The Middle With You", was used in the torture scene in the film RESERVOIR DOGS.   This is probably the best use of music in a movie I can remember in some time.

Home invasion flicks are some of the scariest to me, as these are things that could, and do, happen all over the world, every day.   It's a very scary thought and this movie does a great job of roping you in and making you feel as uneasy as the poor victims in this film.   The movie reminded me a lot of THE STRANGERS, except I thought this was far better.  If you enjoyed that movie, I think you will most definitely enjoy YOU'RE NEXT!

YOU'RE NEXT was just released on home video this past Tuesday, the 14th.  It is available on DVD or a DVD/Blu-ray/UltraViolet combo pack, and included the following special features:

*  "No Ordinary Home Invasion:  The Making Of YOU'RE NEXT" Featurette
*  Audio Commentary With Director Adam Wingard And Writer Simon Barrett
*  Audio Commentary With Director Adam Wingard,Writer Simon Barrett, and Actors Sharni Vinson And Barbara Crampton
