DVD Review: NIGHT OF THE TENTACLES (2013)

NIGHT OF THE TENTACLES
Written & Directed by:

I love the cover of this DVD.  What a great cover...from the pic, to the cool font of the title.  The case for this DVD is awesome!  Unfortunately, what is inside the case...well..not so much.  Here is the plot of NIGHT OF THE TENTACLES from the MVD website:

In this obscene Faustian tale a young artist sells his soul to Satan for the new heart he so desperately needs. The only catch is that the heart is a tentacled monstrosity with a hunger for human flesh! Will Dave get the girl of his dreams? Will he run out of neighbors to feed to his infernal heart? Will Delilah ever finish urinating? Find out in NIGHT OF THE TENTACLES!!!

This will be a short review, as there is really not much to say about this one.  The acting is horrible, especially from the lead male playing the part of Dave.  He might have potential to be a good actor, but in this film he overacts way too much, making some really dumb faces and facial expressions all throughout the film.  It's almost like he is trying to be like Bruce Campbell from the EVIL DEAD films except he is trying way too hard.  Watch it and you will probably see what I mean.

This film is very low budget and it shows.  Now don't get me wrong, I can enjoy and appreciate a good, low-budget film.  I have seen a lot of them.  As long as they entertain me and keep me interested, I couldn't care less what the budget for the film was.  NIGHT OF THE TENTACLES did not keep me interested.  In fact, it took me a couple of times to watch the film as I kept falling asleep.

I really can't recommend this film to anyone.  BUT...like I always say, check it out for yourself and see what you think.  I have seen quite a few positive review quotes about this film, so maybe it is just me.  I have to be honest in my reviews, though, so I am telling it like it is.

If you have seen this film, leave a comment and let me know what you thought of this movie.  Am I wrong in my negative review of this film?  Leave a comment and let me know!

  1. I've been reading reviews of this movie trying to figure out what specifically made the other reviewers like it so much. Admittedly, when I first watched it, I was caught off guard. It is surprisingly charming in a lot of ways. It has shortcomings, but what micro-budget doesn't, and this movie hides its own relatively well. My ultimate conclusion is that this movie is just better than it has a right to be, and no one knows exactly why. It is undoubtedly a combination of many things.
Then I came across your review. Maybe you are pressed for time in your movie watching schedule. Maybe you couldn't actually front the $15 to get the movie, though you likely had a copy given to you. If I'm being honest, however, your review is just lacking in substantial content. You don't address anything that I couldn't have seen by watching the trailer and googling the box art. Do yourself and us readers a favor and actually watch the movie. If you plan on being a critic worth reading at least put in the time to watch the movies. Even if the review is still negative, at least help me in my quest to analyze this movie and it's loving fans.

  2. Mr. or Mrs. Anonymous....I assure you I watch every movie I review for this blog. I watched NIGHT OF THE TENTACLES in full and it just didn't do anything for me whatsoever. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. I was given this DVD as a screener to review (as is the case with all the films reviewed on this website), but that is actually all the more reason to give it a positive review, is it not? In fact, that is why I think a lot of reviewers give bad movies a good review...they are scared of making the company that sent them the DVD mad, or fear they won't get any more screeners if they give a negative review. I don't believe that is the way to do things. I believe in being honest about a film and a review and not leading my readers astray. If that makes a distribution company mad at me, so be it. But, so far a company has yet to stop sending me DVDs for review because I posted a negative review of one of their titles. They realize that they can't all be good reviews.
You might have liked this movie, and that is great if you did. You are welcome to leave a comment saying you respectfully disagree and you enjoyed the movie and why, but there is no reason to leave a comment bashing a reviewer for stating his or her opinion about a particular film.

    Thank you.
