Book Review: ZOMBIE MOVIES: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE (2nd Edition) by Glenn Kay

ZOMBIE MOVIES:  THE ULTIMATE GUIDE (2nd Edition)
by  Glenn Kay
Published by Chicago Review Press
Distributed by Independent Publishers Group

If you are a fan of zombie movies  (and if you are reading this blog, I assume you are), you will definitely want to check out the book titled ZOMBIE MOVIES:  THE ULTIMATE GUIDE  by Glenn Kay.   This is the ultimate resource for fans of zombie films.  Here is a description of the book from the Chicago Review Press website:

Zombie Movies is an essential purchase for all who love (or fear) horror cinema's most popular and terrifying creation. This thorough and authoritative yet uproarious guide reviews and rates nearly 400 zombie films--from Bela Lugosi's White Zombie to the AMC series The Walking Dead. It traces the evolution of the zombie over the decades, from voodoo slave to brain-eating undead to raging infected.
Including a detailed and chilling journal from the filming of Land of the Dead, Zombie Movies also lists the oddest and most gruesome things ever seen in undead cinema and covers not only mainstream American movies but also small independent productions, Spanish and Italian exploitation pictures, bizarre offerings from Japan and Hong Kong, and TV-show episodes with zombies in them. In addition, it provides a detailed rundown of the 25 greatest zombie films ever made and features in-depth interviews with actors, directors, makeup effects wizards, and other zombie experts.
Now revised and expanded to include over 100 new and rediscovered films, this second edition of Zombie Movies provides plenty of informative and entertaining brain food for serious fans and casual moviegoers alike.

This is by far one of my favorite books about zombie films.  The book takes you year by year and gives you info on each zombie film from that year.  The movie descriptions are usually just a page or two at length, sometimes even less, so it is very easy to pick up and read a few descriptions here and there when you have a few spare minutes to kill.  This book is also full of great picks from the films, including screen shots, publicity stills, and movie posters. The book is an over sized paperback containing 432 pages.

Get your hands on a copy of this book as soon as you can.  I promise you it will become one of your favorite zombie movie reference books!

Horror In Real Life: Man Murders Two Strangers With a Machete

In this instalment of ""Horror In Real Life", we take a look at the gruesome case of 20 year old Gregory Aaron Kinsey of Ft. Smith, Arkansas.  The murders occurred a little before 10pm this past Wednesday, June 26th.  I heard about this on my local news, as Ft. Smith is only about 50 miles from where I live, and it is actually the town I was born and raised in!  Good thing I got out of there I guess!

According to the news report, Kinsey was walking home from a store when he confronted a group of 3 men thinking he recognized one of the men as someone that used to date his mother.  Words were exchanged and Kinsey pulled out a machete and repeatedly struck two of the the men, then left leaving them for dead.  This happened while one of the victims kids  (age 15 and 2) watched their Dad be murdered on the lawn of their own home.

This just goes to show you that you never know what evil people have inside of them...don't pick fights with strangers, because apparently some people carry around a machete like it was a pocket knife!  Be nice to others kiddos!

Check out this great Chucky prank!!

I saw this on Facebook the other night and just had to share it.  I don't know anything about the background of this prank, like when or where this took place, but it is pretty funny.  The premise is while waiting at a bus stop, there is a big poster of Chucky from CHILD'S PLAY, I assume to promote one of the upcoming films.  While the people are sitting there, a real Chucky pops out from behind the poster!
  Check it out!

Check out this great zombie short film that I found that was mentioned in my Zombie Page-a-Day calendar.  It's called KEG OF THE DEAD, an 8 minute short film made back in 2006 and shot at the TKE house at UC Berkley.  The film is about a pizza delivery guy that is late for his delivery at the frat house, and doesn't get paid and gets humiliated by the frat guys.   At the same time, zombies start to attack the frat house and the pizza delivery guy turns out to be the hero and save the day!  Check out this great film which includes some great gore and effects!

H.G. Lewis is set to return to the director's chair for the upcoming film, ZOMBIFICADOR

If you are a fan of horror, you no doubt know the name Herschell Gordon Lewis.  He is nicknamed "The Godfather of Gore" as he first brought gore to the mainstream with the films now known as his "Blood Trilogy",  BLOOD FEAST  (1963), TWO THOUSAND MANIACS  (1964) and COLOR ME BLOOD RED  (1965).  His latest film was 2009's THE UH-OH SHOW.   I am glad to see Mr. Lewis coming back with a new project so soon!  His last feature before THE UH-OH SHOW was in 2002  (BLOOD FEAST 2), but before that film, his last feature was THE GORE GORE GIRLS back in 1972!!
Well Mr. Lewis is coming back with the just announced ZOMBIFICADOR!   I am not really sure what that title means, but here is the synopsis from the official press release:

ZOMBIFICADOR is an old-style anthology movie, with several stories that interconnect with each other in some point. From big fat monsters with the ability of transforming people into savage creatures, to human-sized mutant bugs, along with talking puppets and silent psycho killers, that’s what ZOMBIFICADOR is all about.  With five (5) different stories, ZOMBIFICADOR will be the goriest and grossest movie ever made by Herschell Gordon Lewis! In a comeback to his classic gore films, we are proud to present you with the wildest movie ever made by the “Godfather of Gore,” the most important horror filmmaker and the inventor of Gore and Splatter.

In order to get the movie funded, the production company, Mugworth Productions, has started an indigogo campaign in order to raise funds for the film.
Here is a little more info about the Indigogo campaign from the press release:

A crowdfunding campaign is currently underway through Indiegogo. This is an attempt to raise the $100,000 necessary to keep this production entirely free of studio interference, making it truly independent. It will run until July 7th 2013, with initial filming scheduled for the fourth quarter of the year. As a contributor, you are entitled to these great perks: exclusive signed and personalised memorabilia are being offered to funders, in addition to cameo roles and executive producer credits on the movie.

Please help support this awesome new film from a true living legend of horror!!

Chucky is back in the all new film, CURSE OF CHUCKY!!

I love the CHILD'S PLAY movies, and I love the character of the Good Guy doll named Chucky.  So, I am super excited to hear about a new CHUCKY movie coming out called CURSE OF CHUCKY, which if I count right will be the 6th film in the CHILD'S PLAY franchise.  I read about this on one of my favorite horror websites, Shocktillyoudrop.com (if you aren't familiar with that website, check it out for sure).  Here is some info about the film from the Shock Till You Drop article about CURSE OF CHUCKY:

Written and directed by Don Mancini, the film concerns Nica (Fiona Dourif), a young woman grieving over the gruesome suicide of her mother when her domineering older sister Barb (Danielle Bisutti) arrives with her young family in tow to help settle their mother's affairs. As the sisters butt heads over Nica's plans for the future, Barb's young daughter comforts herself with a grinning, red-haired talking doll named Chucky (voiced again by Brad Dourif) that recently arrived mysteriously in the mail.

But as a string of brutal murders begins to terrorize the household, Nica suspects the doll may hold the key to the bloodshed. What she doesn't know is that Chucky has a personal score to settle. He's determined to finish a job he started more than 20 years earlier, and this time he's going to see it through to the bloody and shocking end.

The good news is that original series writer is on board again as writer and director of this film, and Chucky will be voiced by the original voice of Chucky, .  The bad news is that it looks like we won't be able to enjoy this new film at the theater, as it is slated for a direct to DVD/Blu-ray/VOD release on September 24th of this year.  I will post a trailer as soon as one is released...until then, stay up to date with news and updates about the film via the film's great fan made Facebook page found on the link below!

The weekend of September 13th is going to be a busy weekend!  Yesterday I posted about MACHETE KILLS that comes out that day, and now I just realized that the upcoming INSIDIOUS 2 comes out that day as well!  I loved INSIDIOUS and thought it was one of the creepier movies I had seen in a long time.  INSIDIOUS 2 looks to be just as good, if not even better, by the looks of this trailer!

INSIDIOUS 2 is directed by original director , and continues the Lambert's family struggles against a mysterious force that is haunting their family.

Check out the trailer and let me know what you think in the comments below!  I am super excited about this film and will be checking this one out in the theater for sure!

Check out the trailer for the upcoming film....MACHETE KILLS!

The trailer for the sequel to MACHETE was released a couple of weeks ago..I'm not sure why I am just getting around to wathcing it now!  The sequel is called MACHETE KILLS and looks as fun and crazy as the the first film.  The film is directed by  and stars Danny Trejo as the title character along with  tons of other big name actors such as Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergra Jessica Alba, Charlie Sheen, Amber Heard, Lady Gaga  Cuba Gooding Jr., and Mel Gibson!

Here is the basic plot of the film from it's imdb.com page:

The U.S. government recruits Machete to battle his way through Mexico in order to take down an arms dealer who looks to launch a weapon into space.

I'm sure this is going to be a very fun time in the theater.  I am super excited about this one for sure!  MACHETE KILLS is scheduled for theatrical release on September 13th of this year!

Speaking of giveaways....here's another great one from the Shattered Ravings Blog!

My buddy Scott over at the Shattered Ravings Blog has been hosting his latest giveaway, and it is almost over.  But...it's not too late to enter!  Scott is giving away a free copy of the new book, HOODED MAN, to three lucky winners!  Here is the plot of the book, courtesy of Abaddon Books:

When civilization died and the world descended into a new Dark Age, Robert Stokes lost everything, retreating into the woods near Nottingham to turn his back on it all. But foreign mercenary and arms dealer De Falaise sees England as ripe for conquest – and when he and his army arrive at Nottingham, Stokes is reluctantly drawn into the resistance. From Sherwood he leads the fight and takes on the mantle of the world’s greatest folk hero. The Hooded Man and his allies will become a symbol of freedom, a shining light in the horror of a blighted world, but he can never rest: De Falaise is only the first of his kind. Filled with impressive action and desperate characters, this hard-edged dystopian omnibus collects the novels Arrowhead, Broken Arrow and Arrowland.

So, it sound like a modern take on the legend of Robin Hood. Pretty cool...not really horror related, but still sounds cool, and who doesn't love free stuff!! The contest ends in about 5 days, so enter soon!

Check out yesterday's post for another exciting giveaway opportunity and then stay tuned to the 4H Blog as we will be hosting another giveaway here very soon!!

THE PURGE is here! And so is this cool PURGE giveaway!!

I have been looking forward to THE PURGE for some time now, hopefully I will get a chance to see it soon.   For those that don't know,  THE PURGE is a film that opened in theaters tonight that focuses on a family trying to survive the night during a period called "the purge".  This is a 12-hour time period where all emergency services are shut down by the government, basically creating a 12 hour time of anarchy and rioting.  This apparently helps people get out there aggressions so the other hours of the year are more peaceful. It helps the crime rate and unemployment rate.  Pretty crazy stuff!

Well, not only is THE PURGE finally here,  you can also win a pretty cool t-shirt prize pack courtesy of Universal Pictures and the great folks at partnershub.com!   They have created a pretty cool quiz to test your survival skills to see how you would do during the purge.   Click the graphic below to take THE PURGE SURVIVAL QUIZ and see how you do!    Leave your quiz results (stating whether you would survive or not) in the comment section of this post, along with your name and email address for your chance to win!   A winner will be chosen at random from the comments on June 17th.  One comment per person please!  Thanks!!

DVD Review: DOLL BOY (2010)

DOLL BOY
Directed by

DOLL BOY is a short film clocking in at just over 26 minutes. It was written and directed by , and is mainly a marketing tool for the upcoming feature film, CIRCUS OF THE DEAD.  But we'll talk more about that later, for now, let's focus on the wonderful short film, DOLL BOY.  Here is the plot from the film's imdb.com page:

When a brutal daylight massacre leaves them bound and gagged in a remote, abandoned warehouse, eight young West Texans soon realize their minutes are numbered.

Simple plot, but executed to perfection.   This is a wonderful film that I actually remember seeing a couple of years ago at a Texas Frightmare Convention I attended in Dallas, TX.  Seeing it again on DVD brought back wonderful memories of the killer known only as "Doll Boy".  He wears a creepy doll mask that makes Doll Boy one of the cooler masked killers I have seen in a film in a long time.  His weapon of choice is a sledgehammer and he uses it well!  The film takes place in a very old and creepy abandoned warehouse of some sort, which I assume is where "Doll Boy" has taken up residence.  A creepy clown delivers a truckload of bound and gagged people to the warehouse and locks them in.  I guess this is a favor for "Doll Boy" and gives him a fun game to play....catch and kill!  The film is shot in a form of an old grindhouse film complete with a couple of "fake" trailers for the films "CIRCUS OF THE DEAD" and the grossly hilarious "MR. FISTER".

It doesn't look like DOLL BOY is being sold anywhere, but if you have a chance to get your hands on a copy, you will want to give this one a look for sure.   I can't wait to see a full length film from Bloody Bill....and it looks like we will get to with the previously mentioned CIRCUS OF THE DEAD, which Bloody Bill is turning into a full length film.  "Doll Boy" will be a character in the CIRCUS OF THE DEAD film along with a slue of other creepy demented characters, I'm sure.   I will pass on more info on CIRCUS OF THE DEAD once I have it!  Stay tuned!!  Until then, check out the links below to stay up to date on all that's going on with Bloody Bill and his projects!

Blu-ray Review: DEAD BALL (2011)

DEAD BALL
Directed by
Distributed by Well Go USA

Director Yudai Yamaguchi is back with another great action - horror - splatter film, DEAD BALL.  You might remember Yamaguchi from the last film of his I reviewed on my blog called YAKUZA WEAPON (you can read that review here).  He definitely knows how to make a fun splatter film!  Here is the basic plot of DEAD BALL from the Well Go USA website:

Baseball prodigy Jubeh Yakyu (Tak Sakaguchi) is the most feared and dangerous juvenile delinquent in all of Japan. After accidentally causing the death of his father with a super-powered fireball pitch, Jubeh swore off baseball, but his life of crime leaves him in the Pterodactyl Juvenile Reformatory, at the mercy of Headmistress Ishihara, the granddaughter of a World War II Nazi collaborator, and her sadistic assistant, Ilsa.
Despite having sworn never to play baseball again, Jubeh is presented with an ultimatum: join the reformatory team, The Gauntlets, in the national tournament, or witness the death of his innocent cellmate. Jubeh is now in a fight for his life against the sexy but deadly "psycho butcher girls" of the St. Black Dahlia High School. These teams are literally playing for blood!

Ok, I know it sounds kinda weird, and it is, but it is a crazy film and is definitely worth a watch.  I have to say I am a huge fan of the main actor, Tak Sakaguchi.  He was awesome in YAKUZA WEAPON and is just as cool in this film, even showing some lighter, comedic range to his acting.
This film is full of great gore as you would expect, although I have to admit some of it doesn't look that great being as it is mostly CG, but that doesn't take away from the fun aspect of the film.   This is apparently a follow up to director Yamaguchi's earlier zombie baseball film, BATTLEFIELD BASEBALL which I have not yet seen, but plan on doing so after seeing this film!

DEAD BALL is available now on DVD and Blu-ray and contains the following special features:

*  Spinoff Short
*  Making of DEAD BALL Featurette
*  Cast Interviews
*  Sushi Typhoon Trailers
