Blu-ray Review: HALLOWEEN 35TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

HALLOWEEN:  35TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
Directed by:
Distributed by:  Anchor Bay Home Entertainment

I'm sure everyone that reads this blog has seen John Carpenter's classic horror masterpiece, HALLOWEEN.  If you are a true fan of horror, you have seen this film numerous times and it is required viewing every October!  If you have never seen this film, do so asap.  This is as close to a perfect horror movie as you can get.   For those not familiar with the film, here is a description from the Anchor Bay website:

Halloween stars Jamie Lee Curtis (A Fish Called Wanda, True Lies) in her debut role. Anyone who’s ever watched a horror film in the last 35 years knows the story of Michael Myers, who as a child, butchered his sister with a kitchen knife. Committed to a mental institution and watched over by Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasance, Halloween II, IV & V, Fantastic Voyage), he engineers his escape 15 years later, returning to his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois on Halloween night to terrorize anyone who gets in his way, including babysitter Laurie Strode (Curtis). Co-starring P.J. Soles (Carrie, Stripes, Rock ‘n Roll High School), Kyle Richards (The Watcher in the Woods, Eaten Alive), Nancy Loomis (Carpenter’s Assault On Precinct 13, The Fog), Charles Cyphers (Escape From New York, The Fog) and Brian Andrews (The Great Santini, Three O’Clock High), Halloween also cemented the careers of many behind the camera including Carpenter, Cundey, producer Debra Hill and film editor/production designer Tommy Lee Wallace (Halloween III: Season of the Witch, “It”).

I don't feel the need to review the actual movie.  You have probably all seen it, and like I said before, it is about as close to the perfect horror film as you can get.  So, I'm gonna tell you all  about the other stuff you get with this new edition. Now I realize you probably already own this film, either on DVD or the earlier Blu-ray release, but you will definitely want to pick up this new Blu-ray edition.  In addition to the new HD transfer of the film, this set contains a very cool built in booklet full of info and behind the scenes pics from the film.  This new Blu-ray edition also contains some great special features including a new commentary with John Carpenter and Jamie Lee Curtis and two very cool documentaries.  One is new doc called, THE NIGHT SHE CAME HOME, about a rare horror convention appearance Jamie Lee Curtis did back in 2012 to raise money for charity.  Jamie Lee Curtis does not do many appearances at all when it comes to horror conventions, so this was a lot of fun to see.
The other great documentary is called, ON LOCATION:  25 YEARS LATER which was previously available on past DVD and Blu-ray releases. It is a cool look at the filming locations and how they look today compared to back I the late 70's when the film was shot.

If you have not seen this film, this is the version you will want to get for sure.  The picture looks amazing on this new HD transfer.  The HALLOWEEN: 35TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION Blu-ray is available now from Anchor Bay Home Entertainment!

Check out the trailer for ALL HALLOWS' EVE!

While browsing the web today, I ran across the trailer for a killer clown film called ALL HALLOWS' EVE.  The film was written and directed by . I had not heard anything about this film until now, and I am a big fan of creepy clowns, so I wanted to check this out.  Here is the basic plot from the film's imdb.com page:

While watching two children on Halloween night, a babysitter finds an old VHS tape in the kids' trick or treat bag. The tape features three tales of terror, all linked together by a murderous clown. As the night goes on strange things begin to occur in the house. It isn't long before the babysitter learns the horrifying truth... the maniacal clown is slowly working his way into her reality.

The trailer looks like this could be a pretty cool film! Watch the trailer and let me know what you think!

ALL HALLOWS' EVE will be released on VOD and DVD on October 29th.

Motorcyle madness!!

This weekend in my town of Fayetteville, Arkansas, we had the annual Bikes, Blues, & BBQ Motorcycle rally.  It has really grown in recent years and has recently become the 2nd biggest Motorcycle rally in the U.S., right behind Sturgis!  While cruising around the rally this weekend, I started wondering about horror movies (as I always do) and thinking that I don't recall ever seeing a horror movie about a killer motorcycle.  There has been a horror film about every other type of vehicle including cars (CHRISTINE), trucks (MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE), and even bulldozers (KILLDOZER).  I can't ever recall seeing a horror movie about a killer Motorcycle, though.
With a quick Google search, I found there is at least one killer Motorcycle film called, I BOUGHT A VAMPIRE MOTORCYCLE from 1990.   Seems like I remember that title, but I know I have never seen this film. Here is the plot of the film from imdb.com:

When a motorbike gang kills an occultist, the evil spirit he was summoning inhabits a damaged bike. The bike is then bought and restored, but reveals its true nature when it tries to exact vengeance on the gang, and anyone else who gets in its way.

Does anyone know of any other killer motorcycle movies?  Has anyone seen I BOUGHT A VAMPIRE MOTORCYCLE?  Leave a comment and let me know!

Play the AMERICAN HORROR STORY web game!

If you are not a fan of AMERICAN HORROR STORY, you should be.  The first season was amazing, it was honestly one of my favorite shows on TV.  I didn't get a chance to watch much of the 2nd season, called AMERICAN HORROR STORY:  ASYLUM, but I plan to change that when AMERICAN HORROR STORY:  ASYLUM - THE COMPLETE SECOND comes out on DVD on October 8th from 20th Century Fox home entertainment.
In anticipation of the DVD/Blu-ray release, a fun web based game has been created where the player tries to escape the Asylum by choosing a certain sequence of doors!  The game is pretty fun, so check it out and then check out AMERICAN HORROR STORY:  ASYLUM on DVD and Blu-ray next month!

Blu-ray Review: THE BLACK WATERS OF ECHO'S POND

THE BLACK WATERS OF ECHO'S POND
Directed by
Distributed by Anchor Bay Entertainment

It feels like it's been a while since my last film review!  With the packing, and moving, and then unpacking, and then the death of my old computer, I guess it has been a while since my last review post.  Well, I am happy to say I am starting back up with a good one!   The film is THE BLACK WATERS OF ECHO'S POND.  Here is the basic plot of the film from the Anchor Bay website:

During a Turkish archaeological dig early last century, an ancient board game said to have entertained demons was unearthed. Now nearly 90 years later, a group of vacationing friends – including a cynic (Danielle Harris of HALLOWEEN), a rich jerk (James Duval DONNIEof  DARKO), a slutty starlet (Mircea Monroe of Hart Of Dixie”), a jock (Nick Menell of FRIDAY THE 13TH) and prudish twin sisters (Electra & Elise Avellan of GRINDHOUSE) – discover the game hidden in an old house on a remote Maine island. And with a roll of the dice, their darkest secrets will unleash all the greed, jealously and lusts of Hell itself. Richard Tyson (BLACK HAWK DOWN) and Robert Patrick (TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY) co-star in this gory shocker that Horror.com calls “good olfashioned horror movie fun!”

This was a very fun film, but I do have to admit it is slow at times.  Stick with it though, because the ending is pretty brutal and contains a very cool plot twist.  The acting is mediocre, although Danielle Harris does a great job as always, and there is just something about the Avellan twins that I love, so they are always fun to watch.
The effects in this film are very good, and I am happy to report there is quite a bit of blood and gore in this movie, including an awesome chainsaw scene at the end!
Check this one out if you get the chance.  THE BLACK WATERS OF ECHO'S POND is available now on DVD and Blu-ray and includes an Alternate Opening  as the only special feature.

Check out the trailer for ZOMBIE HUNTER starring Danny Trejo

Have you heard about the latest film starring Danny Trejo called ZOMBIE HUNTER? I had heard about it a while back, but then sort of forgot about it until tonight.  I was browsing around on YouTube and came across the trailer.  Here is the basic plot of the film courtesy of the film's imdb page:

Zombie Hunter is set in a post-apocalyptic Zombie wasteland caused by the mysterious street drug "Natas". We follow one man who has nothing left other than a beat up Camaro and a trunk full of guns and booze. He runs down Flesh Eaters, hunting for sport and redemption, while also running from his past. After crashing into a small group of survivors, who are running low on resources, he decides to lend a hand. But a surprise attack by the Flesh Eaters forces them on the run and puts the Hunter's skills to the test.

Based on the trailer, this film looks like it could be lots of fun!  The film was written and directed by first time director K. King, and will be released on DVD on October 8th of this year.  I can't wait to check this one out!

Catching up: YOU'RE NEXT

I am trying to catch up on some stuff that I missed out on while I was on a break from blogging.  One of those things is a film called, YOU'RE NEXT.  I am sure most all of you have heard about it and have probably seen it already since it is in theaters now.  I have been so busy with the new house, I have not had time to see it yet.  In fact, I hadn't even seen the trailer for it until I watched it tonight!  It looks really good, so I will hopefully be checking it out soon.
For those of you unfamiliar with the film, here is a brief plot summary from the film's imdb.com page:

When the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one of victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.

I have heard some mixed reviews from a few of my friends that have seen this film.  If you have seen it, please leave a comment below and let me know what you thought of the film.

Check out the hilarious horror movie spoof trailer for GHOST TITS

Yes, you read that right.  GHOST TITS.  Sorry, I know it's a little crude, but this was just too funny not to share!   GHOST TITS is a hilarious spoof on the modern horror film.   The trailer tells the story of a man who thought he had everything, until the day the one thing (or two I guess) he cherished most vanished!   Ha!  This is good stuff!  Check out the trailer and leave a comment and let me know what you think!

I'm baaaack!!

Ok, I am back up and running!  I went out to my local Best Buy store tonight and got a new computer, so the 4H blog is back in business!  I apologize for my longer than expected delay!  I appreciate your patience and hope you haven't forgot about my little place on the web!

So, I just got the computer up and running and I am super tired, so I am headed to bed.  But tomorrow night I will be back with regular daily (or as close to it as possible) posts.

In fact, since you all have been so patient, and since I haven't done one in a while, why don't I host a FREE DVD giveaway!!  I think I will post that in the next few days.  I need to go through my prize stash and see what all I have.  I will come up with something good for you and announce the giveaway in the next few days!  So stay tuned!

Thanks!

Well, now that I am all moved in...my computer died. Also, German safety videos are like short horror films!

As I told you in  my last post, we bought a new house so I have been busy most every night with packing, moving, and now unpacking.  It is a slow process, but I was hoping I would get time to get back to my daily blog posts.  But, my computer had other plans for me and decided to die.   So, now I am without a computer, and being a blogger without a computer is not a good thing by any means.  I miss getting to talk a little bit about horror each night, but hopefully I will get a new computer in the next week or so and be back up and running.  Thanks to my wife for letting me borrow her laptop in order to do this post tonight.  I normally can't use laptops.  The built in mouse and weird keyboard makes me mad, but I hooked up my regular computer mouse and keyboard to the laptop and this works pretty good in a pinch!
So, until I am back up and running full time, enjoy this awesome German fork-lift safety video!  I know, that seems really random, but watch it and you will see why it belongs on a horror blog for sure!  It is basically a short horror film, complete with some great gore effects!  I saw this on Facebook a while back and had been really wanting to share this with you all!  So, enjoy!!

Sorry for the lack of posts lately.....

Hi everyone, if you've noticed the lack of posts lately, I promise I have a good excuse!  I pride myself and my blog on having daily posts, trying to bring new daily content to my readers.  BUT....there are times when that is not possible and this is one of those times.  It's just temporary, though, so don't worry!

So what is the reason you ask?  Well, it is because we have recently purchased a new home!   We are moving next week, so this past week has been taken up with fixing up a few things at the new house at night after work and packing up things here at the "old" house for the move.  We hope to be all moved in by next Wednesday (8/14), so hopefully I can get back to daily posts right after that  (assuming everything goes ok with getting the Internet hooked up at the new house).

So stick with me, and in a week or so I should be back up and running like normal with my regular daily posts!  Until then, check out some of these other great blogs.  These are ones I check on a daily basis:

Day Of The Woman
Dollar Bin Horror
Dr. Terror's Blog Of Horrors
Freddy In Space
Shattered Ravings

Thanks,

Zombie Hayes

Check out the trailer for the film, JUG FACE

I ran across the trailer for a film called JUG FACE while browsing some other horror trailers on youtube.  I hadn't heard anything about this film, but it looks pretty cool based on the trailer.  Here is the basic plot of the film from the film's official website:

Jug Face tells the story of a pregnant teen trying to escape a backwoods community when she discovers that she may be sacrificed to a creature in a pit. The entity in the pit requires a life for keeping the community safe. The face of the person to be sacrificed is crafted onto a ceramic jug. When ignored, the entity unleashes an evil onto the community. Now no one is safe as tragedy befalls each member one by one and they soon realize that the pit wants what it wants.

Pretty crazy plot synopsis, huh?  So I wonder who the person is that creates the jars, and what gives him the foresight on who's face to sculpt on the jug?  I guess we will just have to watch the movie to see!  The movie is available to watch now on Amazon Instant Video and will be released on DVD and Blu-ray October 15th of this year.

Watch the trailer for the upcoming horror-comedy, BAD MILO

Coming soon from Magnet Releasing is the horror/comedy film, BAD MILO.  This film looks like it could be a lot of fun!  Here is the basic plot for the film from the movie's official website:

Duncan's (Ken Marino) life is a real pain in the ass. Tormented by a manipulative, crooked boss (Patrick Warburton), a nagging mother (Mary Kay Place), a deadbeat new age dad (Stephen Root), and a sweet, yet pressuring, wife (Gillian Jacobs), his mounting stress starts to trigger an insufferable gastrointestinal reaction.
Out of ideas and at the end of his rope, Duncan seeks the help of a hypnotherapist (Peter Stormare), who helps him discover the root of his unusual stomach pain: a pintsized demon living in his intestine that, triggered by excessive anxiety, forces its way out and slaughters the people who have angered him. Out of fear that his intestinal gremlin may target its wrath on the wrong person, Duncan attempts to befriend it, naming it Milo and indulging it to keep its seemingly insatiable appetite at bay.

BAD MILO will be available On Demand August 29th, and in select theaters on October 4th.  Check out the trailers below and let me know what you think by leaving a comment below.  Will you be watching BAD MILO?  Also, I just realized the initials of the movie title are BM!  Ha!

DVD Review: EVIL DEAD (2013)

EVIL DEAD
Written & Directed by Fede Alvarez
Distributed by Sony Pictures

I remember a lot of skeptical people discussing the EVIL DEAD remake online when it was first announced.  The original film is such a classic, that people didn't understand why it needed to be remade and also immediately wrote it off just because they didn't agree with touching a film as good as the original EVIL DEAD.   I have to admit, I was a little skeptical too, but after watching the remake, I am happy to say that I was very impressed with this film.  Here is the basic plot of the film from the film's imdb.com page:

Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods. The evil presence possesses them until only one is left to fight for survival.

If you haven't seen the original EVIL DEAD, stop reading this and go watch it right now!!  The original stars Bruce Campbell as the iconic character of Ash.  The film is a very gory, but full of dark humor and Bruce's own special style of slapstick.  This is even more true of the original's sequel, EVIL DEAD 2:  DEAD BY DAWN.   Bruce Campbell played this character to perfection.  So, how could you have someone step up and play this iconic character of Ash in a remake and have it compare and live up to the level of Bruce's performance?  The answer is you couldn't, and luckily the filmmakers of this remake realized this and didn't go that route.  That is what makes this remake work.

The film uses the basic premise of the original film, but takes it in a much darker direction.  The film is more of a pure horror /terror film than the original.  They have replaced all the dark comedy with nothing but sheer terror and gore. There are some truly brutal scenes in this film, some of which are a nice nod to events that happened in the original.  The acting is very good in this film too.  Some of the actors look truly terrified during their scenes, and I'm sure they probably went through a lot in the filming of this movie.

If you are a fan of the original film, you definitely need to check out this new version of the film.  It is a very well done remake and a nice companion piece to the original EVIL DEAD.   The DVD and Blu-ray is available now and contains the following special features:

*  Making Life Difficult - The Intense and Physically Exhausting Creation of the Film
*  Directing the Dead - Director Fede Alvarez Re-Imagines a Cult Horror Classic
*  Being Mia - The Physical and Psychological Transformation into "Evil Mia"

DVD Review: GALLOWWALKERS (2012)

GALLOWWALKERS
Written & Directed by
Distributed by Lionsgate Entertainment

Last night I watched the film GALLOWWALKERS starring Wesley Snipes.
I am a big Wesley Snipes fan and hadn't seen him in anything in a long time, so I was super excited to see him back in a movie, and the fact it was a horror movie was even better!   Here is the basic plot of the film from the Lionsgate website:

A mysterious gunman, Aman (Snipes), is the son of a nun who breaks her covenant with God to ensure his survival. This act brings a curse upon Aman - all those that die by his gun will return. Soon, he is hunted by a gang of his undead former victims, led by the vicious Kansa. Aman enlists Fabulos, a new young warrior, to fight by his side.

I am usually not a big fan of westerns, but if a western contains zombies and tons of great gore, then count me in!   I thought GALLOWWALKERS was a lot of fun.   The plot was a little hard to follow at some points, and I didn't understand the inclusion of certain characters, but the film kept me entertained the entire time.

The movie is very well made with some beautiful scenery and some excellent cinematography.  The acting is very good overall, but I have to admit, Snipes character is pretty one dimensional and flat.   The other actors were all very good, but the real star of this film to me was the gore.  The film had much more gore than I expected, some of which was some of the most brutal I have seen in a film in a long time.  Watch the trailer and you will get to see a scene where Snipes' character rips the head off of a zombie, complete with spinal cord still attached!  It was basically like watching a movie version of the Mortal Kombat finishing move!  Very awesome on many levels!

I would definitely recommend this film.  The film will be available on DVD, Digital Download, and Video on Demand on August 6th.  The DVD contains the following Special Features:

*  Includes Digital UltraViolet copy of the film
*  Behind the Scenes "making of" featurette With Cast/Crew Interviews
*  Trailer Gallery

Check out the trailer for the horror convention documentary, FANTASM!

A few days ago I did a blog post about an upcoming documentary about horror fans and horror conventions called, FANTASM.  The film was written & directed by , and explores the bonds formed by horror movie fans at all the different horror conventions held all throughout the year.

Well, somehow, I failed to realize that a trailer was already made for this film, so I didn't want to just not post the trailer, so I am doing another post about FANTASM tonight and introducing you to the trailer!

This looks like it is going to be a very interesting film.  I am extremely interested in this project, because I have been to a horror convention every year for the past 6 or 7 years.   I love the conventions and have seen the instant camaraderie and friendships form. So, check out the trailer and then look for a full review of FANTASM coming soon to this website!

DVD Review: NAZIS AT THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (2012)

NAZIS AT THE CENTER OF THE EARTH
Directed by
Distributed by The Asylum Home Entertainment

Ok, let's be honest. The Asylum isn't exactly known as the company that creates blockbuster movies. In fact, they are known as the company that makes films based on blockbuster movies.  They are usually cheap knock-offs with crazy plot lines, and sub-par acting.  Well, NAZIS AT THE CENTER OF THE EARTH.....is no different.  It's exactly what you would expect from an Asylum film
Ok, maybe I am being a little hard on this film, with all it's faults, I guess I need to admit that it was fun, and that is what movies are for!  Before I go into any further detail, here is the plot of the film from the film's imdb page:

Researchers in Antarctica are abducted by a team of masked storm troopers. They are dragged deep underground to a hidden continent in the center of the earth. Here Nazi survivors, their bodies a horrifying patchwork of decaying and regenerated flesh, are planning for the revival of the Third Reich

So the film starts off with some bad CG gunfire and explosions, but when  the research team is taken to the center of the earth, there is actually some pretty cool scenery and cool futuristic landscapes.   The film actually has some pretty good gore effects, some of which are actually practical effects as opposed to CG.  At least they look like practical effects to me.  One in particular is a man who has his face skin peeled off while he is still alive.

The dialog is ok, but is pretty cheesy at some points.  The acting is actually better than most Asylum films I have to admit. Dominique Swain and Jake Busey do a pretty good job headlining the film.

As crazy as the film's plot is, nothing prepares you for the end of the film, when a giant Hitler/Robot makes an appearance.  Apparently the Nazis have kept Hitler's body (or at least his head, since that is all we see) and have fused it with a mechanical robot body, creating one crazy RoboNazi!!

So, overall, not a great movie by any means, but probably fun if you have a group of friends over and just want to have a good time and laugh a lot.   The movie is available now on DVD and contains the following special features:

*  Original Widescreen Presentation
*  5.1 Surround Sound
*  The Making of "Nazis at the Center of the Earth"
*  Gag Reel
*  Trailers
*  Director's Commentary

Check out the crazy trailer for the upcoming film, THANATOMORPHOSE

Have you heard of the film, THANATOMORPHOSE?   Can you pronounce the title?  I can't! But I watched the trailer and this film looks revolting and nasty, so obviously I am dying to see it!!  I hadn't heard a thing about this film, but I ran across an article about it while browsing one of my favorite horror sites, Dreadcentral.com.  Here is the description of the film from the dreadcentral.com article:

A Cronenbergian smorgasbord of rancid flesh and sexual gratification, Thanatomorphose, by Canadian director Eric Falardeau, picks up where Nekromantic left off. “Discovering several bruises on her body after a night of rough sex, a young woman is shocked as, rather than heal itself, her body begins rotting from the inside out. She faces a terrifying and gory descent into a living death, as her putrefying body begins to literally ‘fall off the bone’.”
A strange and claustrophobic tale of sexuality, horror and bodily fluids, Thanatomorphose will not only make you wince, but is strangely uplifting in its take on mortality. The title means the physical signs of a body’s decomposition, caused by death.

The website doesn't list a date for a U.S. release yet, but hopefully it will be sooner than later!  Hopefully I can get my hands on a DVD soon and do a full review of the film here on the 4H website.  Do yourself a favor and go watch this trailer now!  BUT...be advised, this trailer is NOT SAFE FOR WORK -- it includes crazy gore and nudity.  Enjoy!
