DVD Review: HOSTEL 3 (2011)

HOSTEL PART III
Directed by:  Scott Spiegel
Distributed by:  Sony Pictures

Whether you are a fan of the HOSTEL films or not, I encourage you to check out the newest installment in the franchise, HOSTEL PART III.   This 3rd installment is nothing like I expected and I was very happily surprised by how good this film was.  Before I go any further, here is the plot courtesy of imdb.com:

While attending a bachelor party in Las Vegas, four friends are enticed by two sexy escorts to join them at a private party way off the Strip. Once there, they are horrified to find themselves the subjects of a perverse game of torture, where members of the Elite Hunting Club are hosting the most sadistic show in town.

I enjoyed the first two HOSTEL films....I thought they were gritty and dark, just like I like my horror movies.  Some people got tired of the torture element  (dubbing the films, torture-porn), and I can understand that to some degree.  For those tired of the films just focusing on the torture and gore aspect, HOSTEL 3 will will be a welcome addition for you.

HOSTEL 3 is much more than just torture and gore, although that is definitely a part of the film, but to a much less degree than the first two films.   This new film actually has a good story to it, characters you can actually get into and care about, some good plot twists, and even some humor.   This film literally has something for everyone in it.

The film was directed by Scott Spiegel, who was the Executive Producer on the first two HOSTEL films  (not to mention the same guy who worked with Sam Rami and Bruce Campbell on the EVIL DEAD films!).   I think Mr. Spiegel heard the backlash and negative comments about the first two HOSTEL films and decided to take this a different direction and he definitely succeeded!

Being direct to DVD, and not having Eli Roth in the director's chair, I honestly wasn't expecting much out of HOSTEL3.   I can honestly say that this 3rd installment is as good, if not better than the first two films.    If you think they guys from THE HANGOVER had a rough time in Vegas, you haven't seen anything yet!

  1. I really enjoyed the first two Hostel films as well, but I hated this with a passion. It was lazy and uninspired failing to take advantage of the new setting and direction. The kills are rubbish! Not only is the execution bad but also being DTV they had the opportunity to go all the way with the gore but they wimped out and really watered it down. It's nowhere near as explicit as Eli Roth's movies and it totally lacks their intensity. The characters were bland and I couldn’t have cared less for them. All this among other failings. It's just a waste of time cheap cash in. Parts 1 & II were the story and that's that. Terrible film.

  2. I REALLY hated this film!!!!!!!!! I love the first two, and thought this one was just plain awful. My review is up at https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Forgotten-Ones-Podcast/193952757358978 .

Oddly enough though Dave, you and I are the only people I know of that had such an adverse reaction to this film.

    2. I've spoken to many fans on horror movie forums like Bloody Disgusting who hated it. But I've read so many positive reviews from writers including Brad Miska of BD. That doesn't surprise me though considering how much they advertised the movie.

  3. I'm with you two.

I found it to be boring with bad kills and characters that I didn't care about. Hopefully there won't be a fourth Hostel.

If I had to think of a positive...it wasn't the worst horror I've ever seen, but it was still bad.

  5. Wow...I purposly didn't read any other reviews before I wrote mine because I didn't want to be influenced....It's interesting how horror fans can have totally opposites views on the same film. I stated that the film isn't nearly as gory as Eli Roth's films, and that the film focused more on the story than the gore, but that it the reason I think I liked it so much. The torture and gore was still there, but it wasn't the total focus of the film. Thanks for the comments guys and gals! I love to read other people's viewpoints of the films I review!
