Blu-ray Review: TAG: THE ASSASSINATION GAME (1982)

TAG:  THE ASSASSINATION GAME

  If the name Nick Castle rings a bell for you, it's because you probably know him as the actor who played Michael Myers in John Carpenter's 1978 classic, HALLOWEEN.   I hate to admit it, but I had no idea he was a director as well.  In fact, he has 13 films he is listed as the director of on his IMDb page.   A lot of these are comedies, including one of my favorites, MAJOR PAYNE.   I guess I don't pay attention to the credits of films much, or maybe I just forgot, but I certainly didn't remember he directed that one!   

  Castle's directorial career began with the subject of today's review.   1982's "TAG:  THE ASSASSINATION GAME".  Here the basic plot synopsis from the Synapse Film's website:

  Before the majority of 1980s college movies were all about nudity, slapstick comedy, beer bongs and bad decisions, TAG: The Assassination Game gave this genre a killer twist. In this 1982 film noir-inspired gem, a group of students turns dorm life into a mock battle royale by playing a game that could never be done on campuses of today.  The rules of TAG are simple. Players try to “murder” each other using rubber-tipped toy dart guns. If you are shot, you are “killed” and taken out of the game permanently until only one player remains. Unfortunately for this year’s TAG players, one sore loser is determined to win at any cost, even if it means murdering his competition for real!

  Let me start off by saying this was an extremely fun film!   I know it doesn't seem like a movie about a psycho killing off college kids should be described as "fun", but it is done in way that it just is.  The film doesn't take itself seriously, and there is some dark humor throughout the film that lightens the mood.  

  What starts as a simple game of campus tag using rubber darts, descends into something more when the reigning champ, Loren Gersh" gets "killed" in a way he felt was unfair.  This infuriates Gersh to the point that he takes "The Assassination Game" moniker to heart, and he trades in his rubber darts for real bullets!  

  Gersh does a good job of hiding his killings.   My favorite was when he was under the bleachers that his next target was sitting on watching track and field practice.  He times his shot perfectly with the starting pistol the coach shoots to start the race, so no one notices his kill!  

 

  Something else that was so much fun about this film, was seeing actors I knew from other films, but really hadn't seen in many other films.   Robert Carradine plays the lead role in TAG.  I pretty much only know his as Lewis Skolnick from the REVENGE OF THE NERDS films.   Linda Hamilton plays the other lead, and we all know her from her many films, but I mainly know her from TERMINATOR 2, of course.  The part of Loren Gersh is played by Bruce Abbott, of RE-ANIMATOR fame. 

  This is a very unique films as it's hard to categorize into one genre.  It's not truly a horror movie, although it does involve killing and shows dead bodies.  It is more action I would say, and a bit of a psychological thriller.  Throw in a love story with Carradine and Hamilton's characters and you truly have a film that has something for everyone in it!

4K Ultra HD Review: TRICK OR TREAT (1986)

  1986's TRICK OR TREAT is another film to add to my list of films I have always heard and known about, and even owned on DVD for years, but had just never got around to checking out for some reason.  I was excited when Synapse Film's new 4K UHD release arrived for review, as it would finally make me sit down and watch it!    I'm very thankful I got the chance to review this one, because it was a lot of fun!  

 1980's horror films have such a unique feel to them.  That is probably my favorite decade of horror films.  I'm happy to report that TRICK OR TREAT fits right in and is now among one of my favorite 80's horror classics!

 Here is a brief synopsis of the film from the Synapse Films website:

Rock 'n' roll will never die, in this 1980s cult favorite that stars Marc Price (Family Ties) as Eddie Weinbauer, a teenage outcast who idolizes Sammi Curr (Tony Fields), a heavy metal superstar. After Sammi dies a violent death, his spirit returns to help Eddie get even with his high school tormentors. In doing so, Sammi begins to gain control over Eddie's life and brings him deeper into the world of the occult. When Eddie realizes that he has become the tool of Sammi's vengeance, he attempts to stop him, and the horrifying events that follow leave no one unscathed.

Featuring special appearances by Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne, Trick or Treat marked the directorial debut of veteran actor Charles Martin Smith (Never Cry Wolf, Starman) and features a legendary soundtrack by Fastway.  I always knew that Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne were in this film, but be advised they were both on screen for a matter of seconds.   Looking back at my old DVD makes me laugh as they both got top billing, purely using their names for DVD sales.   Synapse Films' choice in cover art for this  new release is much better and a much more fitting representation of the film. 

 As soon as the movie started and I saw the main character, Eddie, I immediately recognized him.   It was Skippy from Family Ties!    Marc Price did an excellent job in this film and it was fun to see him in something other than that aforementioned sitcom. The story is pretty cool, especially seeing what is basically a demon conjured by playing a heavy metal album backwards.  That is something all our parents warned us about as kids, at least if you are around my age and grew up in the 70's and 80's.   The special effects are fun and actually still hold up pretty well considering the age of the film. 

 The presentation of this film is outstanding.  The 4K restoration creates vivid colors and contrasts and is super clean.   Also of note is the soundtrack, most of which was done by English Heavy Metal Band, FASTWAY.   There is some great music in this film, and I will be putting the soundtrack on my Amazon Music playlist!

4K ULTRA HD Review: THE CONVENT (2000)

  I am not sure how this film avoided my radar, but not only have I never seen THE CONVENT, I have never even heard of it!   I find this very odd, as it was so much fun!   How did I miss this one all these years!!   Here is the basic plot synopsis from the Synapse Films website:

In 1960, a young woman named Christine enters St. Francis Boarding School for Girls and lays waste to the resident nuns. Four decades later, a group of college students head to the long-abandoned building late one night to tag it with their fraternity letters, little knowing that rumors of the place being haunted are terrifyingly true. Stir in a couple of disapproving cops and a band of unlikely Satanists, and the table is set for a feast of demonic infestation and bloodshed that only the grown-up Christine (Adrienne Barbeau, THE FOG, SWAMP THING) can possibly stop.

  

 This film had me hooked from the very beginning.  In fact, this might be one of the coolest movie openings of all time.  The movie shows us young  Christine going into a convent and wreaking havoc, shooting up the place, and burning the priest and nuns.  This is done in slow motion, to the tune of "You Don't Own Me" by Lesley Gore.  This is such an effective opening, and the music is perfect for this opening scene.   

  We don't really know why Christine is doing this, but later in the film we get the full story of why she did it from the adult Christine, played by horror legend Adrienne Barbeau.   Speaking of horror royalty, we also get to see the great Bill Moseley in this film, although I was not a fan of his part.  He plays a cop alongside an interesting casting choice in rapper Coolio.  They play a very comedic pair, which was very reminiscent of the horribly out of place cops in THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT.  The comic relief was not needed in that film, and it wasn't needed here either. 

  

  This film reminded me of movies like, DEMONS, and NIGHT OF THE DEMONS.  If you liked those films, you will love this one.   Although made in 2000, it had more of a feel of a 80's or 90's film, and that is a compliment for sure!    The film was full of some great practical effects, and the makeup effects on the main demon were amazing, utilizing some sort of glowing make up to make it look like her veins were glowing a cool blue color.  Very well done!  

 While I never saw an older version to compare it to, I have to say that his 4K UHD version looks amazing.   Very vibrant colors and super sharp picture!  If you have an older DVD of this film, you'll definitely want to do yourself a favor and make an upgrade to the 4K Ultra HD disc!

  If there has ever been a title that so perfectly described the film, VIOLENT SHIT is the one!    VIOLENT SHIT was made back in 1989 by filmmaker Andreas Schnaas, followed by VIOLENT SHIT 2 in 1992, VIOLENT SHIT 3: INFANTRY OF DOOM in 1999, and then VIOLENT SHIT 4:  KARL THE BUTCHER VS. AXE in 2010.   In this latest release from Synapse Films, all 4 films are collected in this one Special Edition.

 I had always heard of these films, but had never seen them.  The DVDs used to be hard to come by and quite expensive to get online.  Luckily Synapse has put out this amazing collection so the films are readily available to everyone now!    I have only watched the first 3 movies so far, but I can already tell how amazing this collection is.  

  The first film is very low budget and looks like it was shot on a VHS camcorder.  It is pretty roughly made, but that does not take away from the enjoyment of it at all.  In fact, it almost makes it feel more real!    The gore is pretty amazing, and of course, all practical effects since it was made back in 1989.  The only negative here is that the blood looks like bright red paint, in fact, it reminded me of the blood from the old Herschell Gordon Lewis films like BLOOD FEAST and COLOR ME BLOOD RED.  
 
  The second film is my favorite of the 3 I've watched so far.  It was amazing to see the difference in quality of film from the first film to part 2.  You could tell the budget was a little more  (although still very low) and looks like it was shot with a slightly better camera.   Again the gore here is amazing.  The special effects look great, and the blood looks much more realistic than in the first film.
 
  The third film gets really crazy, as Karl the Butcher is not the only killer, but he has an entire army of mask wielding maniacs joining him this time!   Again, you can see the progression with each film in terms of quality.   This gore effects were once again amazing, including some genital mutilation scenes that made me have to actually turn away from the screen!   That is quite an accomplishment considering I've watched some nasty stuff and not much bothers me!

  I am really looking forward to checking out part 4 and the bonus movie.  This is a great collection and the $29.95 price tag is a steal for this 5 movie collection!  I highly recommend this DVD set and would say it is a must have for any gore fan!

Blu-ray Review: TENEBRAE (1982)

  Dario Argento  has always been one of my favorite horror directors.  I have yet to see an Argento film I haven't liked.   I haven't seen all his films by any means, and TENEBRAE is one I had never seen before now.   I am glad to say my streak of never seeing an Argento film I didn't like it still in tact, as TENEBRAE is a great addition to the Argento library.   Here is the basic plot of the film from the Synapse Film's website:

American mystery author Peter Neal (Anthony Franciosa) comes to Italy to promote his newest novel, TENEBRAE. Unfortunately, a razor-wielding serial killer is on the loose, taunting Neal and murdering those around him in gruesome fashion just like the character in his novel. As the mystery surrounding the killings spirals out of control, Neal investigates the crimes on his own, leading to a mind-bending, genre-twisting conclusion that will leave you breathless! Featuring an amazing synth-music score from Claudio Simonetti, Fabio Pignatelli and Massimo Morante (formerly of Italian progressive-rock band, Goblin), this all-new 1080p high-definition TENEBRAE release was created from the original uncut camera negative. Also stars John Saxon (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET), Daria Nicolodi (Dario Argento’s PHENOMENA) and John Steiner (CALIGULA).

  Even though this film came out after SUSPIRIA and INFERNO, it actually feels more like one of his earlier films like CAT O NINE TALES or THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE.  This movie goes back to Argento's Giallo roots, but this time with more blood and gore than most Giallo films provide.   Because of this, you get the best of both worlds in my opinion.....you get the whodunit mystery of a Giallo, but the blood and gore of an 80's slasher film.    As with most all Argento movies, you will find some very impressive camera work on display here.  I also noticed the music of this film which I honestly don't pay much attention to in most movies.  The soundtrack for this film goes along with the film perfectly.  

  Synapse has done an amazing job with this release, and the new transfer looks amazingly clear.   You can buy the film on Blu-ray, DVD, or a special edition Blu-ray/DVD/CD Steelbook  while supplies last.

  Rarely does a film's special feature get it's own HD Blu-ray release, but that is just what has happened with JUST DESSERTS:  THE MAKING OF "CREEPSHOW".   After watching it, you can see why.  This is no ordinary "special feature".  Clocking in at 90 minutes, it's a legit feature film itself, that just happens to be about the making of another film.    Here is the basic synopsis of the film from the Synapse Films website:

  CREEPSHOW has always been one of my favorite horror films of all times.  I love anthology style horror films, and no one has done it better than CREEPSHOW.   George Romero and Stephen King are two masterminds of horror, so a collaboration of those two is bound to be good.   Watching this documentary about the making of the film made me remember just how good CREEPSHOW really is.    I haven't seen it in years,  but after watching JUST DESSERTS, I am really wanting to watch CREEPSHOW again very soon! 

  I am a big fan of "making of" documentaries of horror films, and this is probably one of the greatest I have ever seen.   Other than the strange absence of Stephen King, everyone involved with the movie is on hand here to give you first hand accounts about their experience on the film.  My favorite interviewee was Tom Savini, the mastermind behind the effects of the film.  He is my all time favorite effects person, so seeing him on screen talking about this film was truly awesome.

  Along with the interviews, we get to see tons of behind the scenes photos and footage, along with scenes from CREEPSHOW.   The movie is broken up into segments, talking about each entry in the film, along with a beginning section explaining how the film came to be and the influence the old EC comics had on Romero and King, and on the film itself.   I was a huge fan of EC comics growing up, so that's one reason I always loved this film....it is like watching an old VAULT OF HORROR or TALES FROM THE CRYPT come to life onscreen.

  I cannot recommend JUST DESSERTS enough...it is a must have for any fan of CREEPSHOW.   The special edition Blu-ray is available now from Synapse Films and contains the following special features:

Blu-ray Review: SORCERESS (1995)

  I love coming across a horror movie I have never seen or even heard about.   I like to think I'm "in the know" on most horror films, but I find out everyday there are films that have just missed me somehow.  This is one of those films.  Synapse Films has released the 1995 film SORCERESS to DVD and Blu-ray.   Here is the basic plot synopsis from the Synapse Films website:

  Larry Barnes (Larry Poindexter) is on the fast track to a partnership in a prestigious law firm, and his sexy witch wife Erica (Julie Strain, HEAVY METAL 2000) will do anything to keep her husband happy. But Erica makes a fatal mistake when she tries to kill Larry’s main competition for the partnership, Howard Reynolds (Edward Albert, GALAXY OF TERROR). With Howard now crippled for life from Erica’s dark magic, his wife Amelia (Linda Blair, THE EXORCIST) plots her revenge. Using witchcraft and a mystical medallion, Amelia tries to destroy everyone and everything in Larry’s life!
  All the pleasures of the flesh and malevolence of black magic collide in this newly remastered and uncensored version of Jim Wynorski’s SORCERESS (aka TEMPTRESS). Presented for the first time ever from a new 2K scan of the original uncut film element, this release features sex scene footage and additional nudity removed from the original release.

  I had no clue what to expect going into this film. What I got was a fun film full of witchcraft and tons of nudity.  What else would you expect from a film like this?!   This film feels like a typical 80's horror film.  I actually find it hard to believe it was made in 1995.  I would more easily believe this was made in 1985.  Everything about this film screamed 1980's to me, especially the hair and wardrobes of some of the main actors and actresses.
 
  Speaking of the actresses, this movie has some of the most beautiful actresses you will see in a film, and pretty much every single one of them has a nude scene (or multiple nude scenes) throughout the film.  I normally don't mention much about the nudity in films, but this film just had so much of it that a review would not be complete without mentioning it.  It basically feels like you're watching a movie on Cinemax or some other pay channel late at night. This is definitely not a film you want the kids around while watching!

  Other than the nudity, the film was actually pretty tame by today's standards in term of violence/gore. Most violence comes from people being shot, and there is no real gore to speak of in this film.

  While some may be disappointed in the gore/scare factor, or lack thereof,  I think everyone would have to admit they enjoyed watching this film.  If you haven't seen it yet, check it out for sure.

Blu-ray Review: MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE (1966)

  Every now and then, a film comes along and I have no clue what to say about it in a review.  I think we might have one of those times here.  The film is MANOS:  THE HANDS OF FATE.   Here is the plot synopsis from the films press release:

  Mike (Harold P. Warren) and Maggie (Diane Mahree), on a road trip with their daughter and family dog, take a wrong turn in Texas and become trapped at a weird lodge inhabited by a polygamous pagan cult. They soon find themselves in the middle of a power struggle between caretaker Torgo (John Reynolds), cult leader The Master (Tom Neyman), and two warring factions of the Master's wives. As the family tries to escape, the worshipers of Manos decide their fate...
   MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE, the sole directorial effort of Texas fertilizer salesman Harold P. Warren, perplexed even the most jaded Drive-In audiences and was deemed by many the worst movie ever made. Nearly lost, the original 16mm Ektachrome film elements have been finally unearthed and lovingly restored by Ben Solovey to create the definitive version of this accidental masterpiece. There's no other movie like MANOS... now in HD with picture and sound unseen since 1966.

  Any time a company puts a review quote on the cover art of the DVD/BD like this one, you know you are in for a treat:

  "The worst film ever made" - Entertainment Weekly

  The fact they would celebrate this quote makes you realize they know this is a bad movie, yet there must have been something likable about it to make a company put money into an all new 2K restoration and a new DVD / Blu-ray release.   If it was truly that bad of a movie, they wouldn't go to all this trouble to release it....right?  Well....yeah, I guess, but it really is bad!!   BUT....I don't know why, but I still kind of liked it.  It's weird I know, but it's like when all your friends think a girl is really ugly, yet for some reason you are kind of attracted to her.  You know she is ugly, yet you still kind of like her for some reason and you really can't figure out why.   That is the best way I can describe this film.  It's an ugly film but has a great personality! 

 Well, that's really all I have to say about this one.  It's one you need to check out for sure, if for no other reason, gather your buddies around and drink some beer, then have your own Mystery Science Theater 3000 live in your living room!  Believe me, there will be plenty of opportunities to crack jokes about this one!

Blu-ray Review: MOSQUITO (1995)

  Once again, I am reviewing a film I have always heard of, but have never had the chance to see.  MOSQUITO has long been out of print on DVD, and was going for big bucks on ebay.  I was about to think I would never see this film until now!  The great folks at Synapse Films have put together a remarkable release of this cult favorite!   For those not familiar, here is the basic plot of the film from the Synapse website:

  Science-fiction becomes horrifyingly real for a park full of innocent campers, as a hideous horde of mutated mosquitos viciously attack without warning! A band of survivors flees the bloodthirsty swarm in a death-defying attempt to warn the world of the mosquito menace. Led by a brave young couple and a resourceful government agent, the group realizes their only hope is to take on the bloodthirsty bugs in an explosive final showdown! A chilling blend of sci-fi, humor and old-school horror, MOSQUITO is a tour de force of terror. Starring genre icon Gunnar Hansen (the original “Leatherface” from THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE) and the late, great Ron Asheton (founding member of the punk rock band, The Stooges), MOSQUITO is a gore-drenched tale made with traditional stop-motion and practical effects!

  I love finding hidden gems like this film.  Most of today's new horror films just can't compare to most of these older films.  One thing you'll notice right off the bat with this film is that all of the gore is done by practical effects!  That is a huge plus in my book.  The computer generated effects look really fake most of the time, especially when dealing with blood/gore.   The mosquitos look awesome in this film and the damage they do is pretty crazy.   Most all of the kills come by the stabbing of people with the mosquito's proboscis, but one kill in particular stays on the guy as his blood is sucked from his body by the huge mosquito, resulting in a very gruesome, eye-popping effect! 

   The acting in this film is good all around, and it was really fun to see screen legend Gunnar Hansen (a.k.a. Leatherface) on screen, especially when he yields his trusty chainsaw to take care of the overgrown bugs! I also really enjoyed actor Steve Dixon as the scientist looking for the meteor that hit.   Ron Asheton plays the park ranger that adds some comic relief to the film, which made the film even more fun.  

  I really wished this movie would have been horrible, because then I could have made some funny mosquito themed jokes like, this movie really sucked, or, I don't know what all the buzz was about...I'm sure I could come up with more.   The bottom line is, this movie was an incredibly fun and will be one I will revisit many times, I'm sure.   If you are a fan of creature features, you will want to add this one to your collection for sure!

Blu-ray Review: MORITURIS (2011)

  Very seldom do I get a movie to review that I have never heard of, but that was the case with MORITURIS.   I am really surprised that I had never heard of this one, as it was a very fun, entertaining horror film!  Here is the basic plot of the film from the Synapse website:

  Two lovely Romanian girls take a trip with three Italian men to a rumored midnight rave in the middle of a dark forest. As the gang proceeds on foot to their final destination, a mysterious graveyard is discovered, a shockingly vile plot twist is revealed and bloodthirsty undead Roman gladiators rise from the dead to torture and mutilate their victims! For the two women, an already terrifying night is about to get much, much worse, as the zombified warriors hunt down the group to tear their heads off! Will anyone survive the night? An interesting mix of old school 1980s Italian horror, with a touch of the brutality of Wes Craven’s THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, MORITURIS is an unflinching, strong, cruel and extremely violent film featuring gruesome effects from Italian SPFX maestro, Sergio Stivaletti (DEMONS, DEMONS 2, DELLAMORTE DELLAMORE, Dario Argento’s OPERA).

  This film is very strange to say the least.....the first half is very uncomfortable rape/revenge type film while the 2nd half is just a completely crazy kill fest involving zombie Roman Gladiators.  I know it sounds weird and it is, but somehow it works and makes for a very fun film!  While there is not as much gore as I had hoped, what we do see if very well done.   The picture quality with this Blu-ray release is very good as is the acting.   Synapse always puts out some of the best films and this one is a very nice addition to their catalog. 

  This is a great film that all horror fans should check out.  Horror fans are always complaining that no good, original horror films come out these days.  Well, I for one have never seen resurrected Roman Gladiators rise from the dead and kill young adults in the middle of the forest.  This one definitely brings something new to the table!  Check this one out for sure!

Blu-ray Review: SAMURAI AVENGER: THE BLIND WOLF (2009)

  This quite possibly could be the best movie you have never heard of.   I had no idea what to expect going into my viewing of SAMURAI AVENGER:  THE BLIND WOLF.  I had never heard of the film and hadn't read any reviews.  I came away from the viewing blown away at just how good of a movie this is.  In fact, I honestly can't remember the last time I was this entertained by a film. 
  Here is the basic plot synopsis of SAMURAI AVENGER courtesy of the Synapse Films website:

 After losing his eyesight, his wife, and his daughter at the hands of a deranged psychopath, a man is transformed into an unstoppable killing machine hellbent on revenge! Eight years after the massacre of his family, the “Blind Wolf” has returned as a highly trained swordsman ready to seek justice. But he doesn’t know seven deadly (and even undead) assassins have been hired by his sworn enemy to make sure he doesn’t leave town alive!
 Set in nowhere and in no time, SAMURAI AVENGER: THE BLIND WOLF is a bloody sushi-western and a modern day action film with a classic samurai essence.

 Again, I can't remember the last time I had so much fun with a film.   The acting is great on all accounts, the story is simple yet intriguing, and the effects are spectacular!  There is a good mixture of both CG and practical effects on display, including some great gore and blood spray reminiscent of ICHI THE KILLER and other such films.   Everything about this movie is perfect in my eyes.  The music for each scene was spot on, and music is something I don't always notice in a film.  Director and star, Kurando Mitsutake, did an amazing job and I can not wait to see what else he does in the near future!   

  I honestly can't say enough good things about this film.  In fact, me trying to put into words a description of the greatness of this film is a waste of my time and yours.  My review can not do it justice.  This is one you just need to trust me on, and then go out and buy you a copy asap!  You will not be disappointed.

Blu-ray Review: LONG WEEKEND (1978)

  I recently watched a film that was sent to me for review that I had never heard of before.  It's rare that I come across a film I've never heard of.  There are plenty that I haven't seen, but I at least know about, but this one I had never even heard of the title before.  The film was LONG WEEKEND which is a great revenge flick from 1978.  Instead unlike most revenge flicks, in this film it's animals that are getting revenge on humans! 
  Here's the basic plot from the Synapse Website:

 Attempting to resurrect their failing marriage, Peter (John Hargreaves, THE ODD ANGRY SHOT) and Marcia (Briony Behets) set out on a camping trip to a deserted stretch of the Australian coastline hoping a long weekend in the sunshine will help them patch their differences. They are a careless couple, littering the countryside with garbage, shooting guns and even driving away after wounding a kangaroo with their automobile. Their callous disregard for the environment soon becomes apparent when the animals start to seek vengeance. Marcia and Peter have proven themselves to be destroyers of nature. Will the animals allow them to leave or will they too be destroyed?

  This was a very fun film that I highly recommend.  It's not gory or even really that scary, in fact, it's quite tame by today's standards.  I'm sure it was quite shocking at the time of it's release, though. That being said, it's still a wonderful entertaining film.  The movie will make you think about how you treat nature, as this couple found out the hard way by being attacked by birds, dogs, snakes, and even an opossum!
 
  The new HD 1080p transfer looks great on this new blu-ray release.  Sometimes you would forget this film was shot in the 1970's if it weren't for the clothing and hair!

Blu-ray Review: CURTAINS

  The only thing I love more than watching one of my favorite 80's slasher flicks, is watching an 80's slasher flick nowadays that I have never seen before!  Such was the case with the 1983 classic, CURTAINS.   I had never really heard much about this movie, but I remember always seeing the VHS box back when I worked at a video rental store.  For some reason I just never checked it out.  I hate I missed out on seeing such a great film so long ago, but I love that I get to see it now on Blu-ray thanks to Synapse films!    If you are unfamiliar with this film like I was, here is the synopsis courtesy of the Synapse films website:

  A group of women gather for a weekend casting call at the secluded mansion of director Jonathan Stryker (Vernon). He’s searching for the perfect woman to play the role of the crazed character “Audra”, and these women are just dying for the chance to play her! Stryker’s last star, Samantha Sherwood (Eggar), is so determined to get the part, she committed herself to an asylum to prepare for the role. Unfortunately for all, a crazed killer in a disgusting “hag” mask is viciously murdering everyone one by one. Who will survive the final curtain call?

  This is a great film, and while it is a slasher film, it feels more like an Italian Giallo film, which makes sense being an early 80's slasher.  The modern slasher film derived from the Giallo sub-genre, so I guess this is a bridge piece where you can see the two horror sub-genres crossing paths.   There is not much blood/gore which is more the Giallo characteristic, but it has all the makings of a Slasher film as well, with some very unique and crazy kills.   One in particular involves the killer wearing an ultra creepy "old lady" mask as she ice skates across a frozen pond to get to her victim.  The close up of her skates in slow motion really builds the tension, and I just can't get over how creepy of an image this is.

  Another creepy aspect of this film (as if the creepy old lady mask wasn't enough), is the presence of a creepy doll throughout the film (as seen on the Blu-ray cover).  Killer dolls in movies always scare me, so this was a nice added feature to go along with the already creepy vibe given off by this film.   The film is also a mystery, or a "who-done-it" type film, as we don't know who the killer is until the very end, although I have to say I have seen enough of these type films by now, I caught on to who the killer was very early in the film, as you will probably too.  Regardless, it is still a very enjoyable film that I am very glad to have finally got the chance to view.

  Thank you Synapse Films for another gorgeous release of another classic horror film.  The latest Hammer Horror film from Synapse is the great COUNTESS DRACULA starring the beautiful Ingrid Pitt.  Here is the plot synopsis from the Synapse Films website:

  The beautiful Ingrid Pitt (The Wicker Man, Where Eagles Dare) stars as Elisabeth Nádasdy, an aging Hungarian Countess who discovers she can reverse her aging by bathing in the blood of young women. While in her youthful state, the Countess falls for the handsome Lt. Imre Toth (Sandor Elès), and impersonates her own daughter to win his affections. Soon, girls in the village go missing… kidnapped and murdered by the Countess and her steward, Julie (Patience Collier) to satiate her horrifying bloodlust. Can Elisabeth live a life of deception with her grotesque lust for blood to stay eternally young, or will her ghoulish secret finally be revealed? Co-starring Nigel Green (Jason and the Argonauts, Zulu).

  Considered “one of the more underrated films from the latter days of the Hammer Films dynasty“ (Donald Guarisco, Allmovie.com), Countess Dracula is based on the real-life Hungarian Countess Elizabeth Bathory, a woman accused of torturing and murdering more than 600 girls.

 I am huge fan of Hammer Horror films.  They had such a unique vibe to them.  I can't really explain it, but there is a certain style you can see when watching a Hammer film and I love it.  COUNTESS DRACULA was another very enjoyable Hammer film.   The movie was shot well and acted well, and I loved the story.  I have always enjoyed stories and movies about the infamous Elizabeth Bathory, and this is another one I can add to my list of enjoyable films.  Ingrid Pitt did an amazing job as the title character in this film.   She is a joy to watch on screen, and really makes this movie.   Some people will say that this film is slow, and I can see that.  It is slow at some points but even then if you are a fan of Hammer horror films, you will probably enjoy the dialog like I did.   This film won't be for everyone, but if you are a fan of Hammer films, you will definitely want to add this one to your collection!
