New Horror DVD releases coming out Tomorrow, 9/1

Here are the new horror related DVD's coming out Tuesday, 9/1
(Some of the titles you can click on to see a trailer for that film)

* DRIFTER: HENRY LEE LUCAS - Lionsgate
* EARTH DAY - R Squared Films (this looks like the worst movie ever!)
* HUMANITY'S END - Maverick (more sci-fi than horror)
* METHODIC - Blinky Productions

Well, there you go....maybe the worst week for Horror DVD's since I started this blog a few months ago. Maybe the companies are saving up their DVD releases for closer to October since Horror DVD's sell so well around the Halloween season. I hope that is the case anyway. Well, look on the bright side, you can save your money this week, and hopefully next week will be a little better!

Rob Zombie to remake THE BLOB!

I'm not sure what to think of this news, but it is being reported that Rob Zombie (HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, THE DEVIL'S REJECTS) is going to remake the 1958 classic Steve McQueen film THE BLOB. I guess this will actually be a threemake (did I just invent a new word?), since the film was remade already once back in 1998 and starred Kevin Dillon. The story is simple...an alien life form comes to earth and devours everything in its path, growing bigger and bigger.
What do you think about this news? I kinda wish Rob Zombie would go back to some more original projects, but I love all his movies, so I'm sure this will be good to. It will be interesting to see how he puts his spin on the story. And since it will be R rated, I'm sure he is going to up the gore factor quite a bit.

Check out the full article on FirstShowing.net HERE

And, just for fun, check out these BLOB trailers:

Support horror films in the theater! 2 new horror films opened this weekend....go see 'em!!

I'm sure most of you know, but if you don't, both THE FINAL DESTINATION 3D and Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN 2 opened yesterday in theaters. Please support these films and check them out while still in the theaters. We have to support R-Rated horror films so that they will continue to be successful and therefore keep getting made. As opposed to studios just making the PG-13 horror movies to guarantee the extra $$$. So, watch the trailers, go see whichever one you think looks best, or both, and then come back and comment and let me know what you thought of these films. I will be catching HALLOWEEN 2 Sunday night and then THE FINAL DESTINATION 3D a little later in the week next week. Let me know what you think!!

Entertainment Weekly lists its 20 Best/Worse Horror Villains!

This is worth checking out....EW.com has made a list of its Best/Worse Horror movie villains of all time! I agree with this list for the most part....I would not include Pumkinhead on the list of worst, though..I liked him. They have all the mainstream villains you would think about (Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, etc), but I like that they put some villains that most people wouldn't think about, or have forgotten...like Count Orlok from NOSFERATU or Annie Wilkes from MISERY. They also have included a newer entry, Sylvia Ganush from Sam Raimi's DRAG ME TO HELL. Take a look at the list and let me know what you think. Who would you add as a best or worst villain?

DVD reveiw: KNOCK KNOCK

Knock, Knock....

Who's there?

I Feel Sorry For...

I Feel Sorry For WHO?

I Fell Sorry For anyone who actually sat through all 92 minutes of this piece of crap!!

I guess I feel sorry for myself, because I did sit through all of the film, although not all in one sitting. Seems as though I kept falling asleep for some reason....oh wait, I know, because it was BORING!!!

Here is the plot from IMDB.com:

Knock Knock is a horror film that combines fear with revenge, hate with justice and responsibility with sacrifice. The bible says an "Eye for an Eye." Rico was just a big fun loving son of a hard working neighborhood business man. The problem is his dad is an undertaker. Some popular high school Students thought he was weird because of it. Rico kept to himself and helped his dad around their funeral home after school. One night after a high school pep rally, some of those students wanted to have a little fun. The town would never be the same. Local cops have never seen anything like it. The beautiful detective thought she knew it all. Is the drunken old detective right? Why was it happening? Who will be next? Answering the door will never be the same again!

The plot sounds good enough, and I actually thought the trailer looked pretty good. That just goes to show you how good editing in your trailer can help market movies. It worked on me. I bought it and was very disappointed. Don't let it happen to you! Just watch the trailer below and that will be all you need to see of this film. The acting is horrible, some of the characters are just plain annoying, and you hardly ever actually see the killer. Which, now that I think about it, might be a good thing seeing as how the killer wears what at first looks like a creepy mask, but on closer look it seems as though the killer just stuck duct tape all over his face, and quite sloppily at that! LAME! I must admit, though, when you do see the killer in action, there is some good gore effects for those that like the red stuff!

Watch the trailer for THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL

I just stumbled upon this trailer for THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL while browsing one of my favorite movie sites, Firstshowing.net. The trailer looks pretty good, with eerie music, sound effects, and some creepy imagery. The film is made to look like a classic 1980's style horror film and will be coming to theaters in limited release this October, with a DVD following shortly there after. This movie is written and directed by Ti West, of the horror films The Roost and Trigger Man previously.

The plot is simple:
Set in the 1980s, college student Samantha Hughes (Jocelin Donahue) takes a strange babysitting job that coincides with a full lunar eclipse. She slowly realizes her clients plan on using her in a satanic ritual.

INGLORIOUS BASTERDS--Tarantinto's Masterpiece

While not true horror, with the violence and blood that this film contains, I don't know where else it would be classified, so I am gonna talk about it here! Plus, it does resemble some old exploitation films from the past, and has a major horror link in that it co-stars Eli Roth (director of CABIN FEVER and the HOSTEL films). Eli actually had a bigger part than I thought he would. (if you read that sentence out of context, it would sound dirty). He played a character nicknamed "The Bear Jew" and was known for clubbing Nazis with his trusty 'ol Louisville Slugger baseball bat. I had been waiting on this film for years, and director Quinten Tarantino did not disappoint. While I have loved ALL his films (ok...I didn't love JACKIE BROWN, but the rest of his films are superb), this has to be considered his 'masterpiece'. I can't say to much to ruin it for those that haven't seen it, but I can say that this is by far my favorite of his films (that distinction belonging to KILL BILL pt 1 before). Brad Pitt's character of Lt. Aldo Raine was excellent, I really like the characters Brad Pitt chooses to play, you can tell he doesn't take himself so seriously that he can't do just cool, kick-ass parts like this. While slow in a just a few parts, even these slow parts are enjoyable thanks to Quentin Tarantino's wonderful dialog. The action scenes are great, and the final climax had some of the most awesome imagery I have seen in a film in a long time. Also, I can't do a review of a Tarantino movie without mentioning the music. Tarantino always picks the perfect songs to go with his films, borrowing heavy from old exploitation films, kung-fu films, and spaghetti westerns from the past. This movie is no different. I always enjoy the soundtracks to Tarantino's films.

This film is a must see, and I rate it 5 out of 5 Nazi scalps!!!

THE WOLFMAN remake trailer!

Let me start by saying that I have never been a big Werewolf fan. Of all the Universal Classic Monster movies (Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, and The Wolfman), THE WOLFMAN was always my least favorite. So I didn't have great expectations for this film. But then I do like Benecio Del Toro, and I love Anthony Hopkins, so I thought it might be ok. But then I saw the trailer, and now I am super excited about this new film. THE WOLFMAN has some incredible effects and looks great! The film is scheduled to hit theaters on February 12, 2010.

Check out the trailer and let me know what you think!

THE HAUNTED WORLD OF EL SUPERBEASTO

I am super excited about this new animated film from Rob Zombie. I am a HUGE fan of his films, so anything with his name on it, I am all about. For those of you that don't know about this film, it is based on the character of El Superbeasto, a masked wrestler/crime fighting super agent. El Superbeasto was a character in Rob Zombie's original comic books called ROB ZOMBIE'S SPOOKSHOW INTERNATIONAL. Here is the synopsis from the official website:

Rob Zombie presents a hilarious animated adventure of a crime fighting secret-agent, El Superbeasto. A massive, over-the-hill masked wrestler, El Superbeasto has more interest in exotic dancers than adventure. Despite his disinterest, however, he still manages to get involved with murderous, super-intelligent gorillas, Liverpudlian zombies, and Dr. Satan - a manic-depressive mad scientist obsessed with finding the perfect woman. Throughout his unusual escapades, he is joined by his sister, Suzi X, a sexy super-spy adventurer, and her sidekick: a 10-foot tall robot named Marvin, who digs Barry Manilow and Michael Bolton. Rosario Dawson and Paul Giammati are among the stars that lend their voices to this uniquely animated, colorful, and bizarre comedy Zombie dubs "Austin Powers meets The Munsters by way of Hard Days Night."

Wow...I don't know about you, but it sounds awesome to me! Check out the trailer and let me know what you think!!!

Movie Review: BATTLE ROYALE

I have heard of this film for years, but finally got a chance to watch it this past week. For those of you that have thought about seeing this film, go do so right now. This is instantly one of my new favorite films of all time.

Here is the basic plot according to IMDB.com:

A random class of Japanese ninth-grade students are--in this fictional universe--randomly selected by a fascist government lottery. They are kidnapped and forced onto an isolated island, where they are equipped with food, water, a map, and a random weapon. On the island, they have to compete in a violent death-match game till only one victor remains. Failure to follow the rules or participate in the death match results in death by an exploding collar that everyone has to wear.

This film is shot on a beautiful tropical island location. The beautiful scenery is a tremendous contrast to the violence and bloodshed that is going on. Also of notable contrast, is the beautiful music from classical composers such as Bach, Schubert, Strauss, and Verdi that plays in the background as some of the more sinister scenes transpire.

This is a gorgeously shot movie with great direction and great acting. I highly recommend this film! Check it out as soon as you can!

Japanese horror film GROTESQUE banned in the U.K.

I read about this film called "GROTESQUE" a few days ago in the latest issue of GOREZONE MAGAZINE. They said it was over the top with gore and if the writers of a magzine called GOREZONE say its overly gory, then this is film I want to see! Well, good thing I don't live in the U.K.! Apparently the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has deemed this film too depraved to warrant a rating saying that giving the film a rating would involve a ''risk of harm'' to those viewing it.

This weeks Horror DVD releases: Tuesday, Aug 18th

Here are the Horror related DVD's coming out tomorrow, Tuesday, 8/18:

* DEATH NOTE 3: L, CHANGE THE WORLD
* DEXTER: THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON (DVD& BD)
* THE FINAL DESTINATION COLLECTION: Triple Feature (2-disc rerelease): Warner

For those of you that didn't catch THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, I highly recommend it. While not as good as the original (what remake is?), it is still better than most horror films being released today. Also, if you have never seen VERSUS, get it for sure. The low quality trailer doesn't do it justice. VERSUS is an awesome film.

DVD Review: THE SINFUL DWARF

With a name like that, it has to be good! Good in a really bad way..make sense? THE SINFUL DWARF was made in 1973 and is a perfect example of a exploitation film you would see in the Grindhouse theaters of 42nd Street in New York back in the 70's. Here is the plot summary from IMDB.com:

Olaf (aka. the "sinful dwarf") and his mother run a boarding house and a white slavery ring. They also smuggle heroin to keep the addict girls happy so they do not try and escape. A young couple move into the house and the evil landlords take a liking to the female.

That is the plot...simple and to the point. While I can't say this is a good movie in any way....it is unique and interesting. You don't see movies like this everyday. If you are into weird, disturbing movies, then by all means, check this one out!

Movie Review: 3 ON A MEATHOOK

After years of hearing about this film, I was finally able to track down a DVD copy. Made in 1972, 3 ON A MEATHOOK was writer/director William Girdler's answer/homage to Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO. While never garnering the attention of Hitchcock's film, it managed to turn itself into a nice, underground, cult-classic type film. The story is simple, 4 girls on a trip have car trouble and are stranded on the road when Billy shows up and offers to take them back home to spend the night at his farm, where he lives with his "pa" (His mom died years ago). Little do they know that Billy has a problem with girls, and unlike most regular guys that might just get sweaty palms or stutter their words when they are around pretty girls, Billy's reaction is far worse and usually ends up with someone dead. Or is Billy the killer afterall? Hmmm...now that I think about it, Billy's dad is known around the county for his wonderful smoked sausage..yet I never saw any actual animals on the farm..interesting.
The movie starts off strong, sets a good mood with its grainy picture and sound..it does go flat in the middle section...too long of a romantic set up between Billy and one of the girls...we get it, you are getting attached to her so it will be that much worse when she winds up dead in the end...geez! Anyway, once you make it through the long, drawn out middle part, the end comes along and makes all the boring middle part worth it. SPOILER ALERT-- apparently Billy is not the killer...turns out Billy's pa is killing off the girls and just telling Billy he is doing it and makes Billy believe him. And hey, is that Billy's mom that escapes out of hiding! Dang, Pa...you've been keeping quite some secrets out in your barn!!

Behind the scenes preview of George Romero's new film SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD

Hey boys and ghouls! I just got word that George Romero has released a behind the scenes video of his newest film, SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD! I love zombie films, and nobody does them better than the master himself, George Romero!
Here is the official synopsis from IMDB.com:
On an island off the coast of North America, local residents simultaneously fight a zombie epidemic while hoping for a cure to return their un-dead relatives back to their human state.

Watch the trailer for Dario Argento's new film GIALLO

As some of you know, one of my all time favorite filmmakers is legendary horror director, Dario Argento. So needless to say, I am super excited about the fact that he has a new film coming out titled GIALLO. Here is the official synopsis from IMDB.com:

In Italy, a woman fears her sister may have been kidnapped. Inspector Enzo Avolfi fears it's worse. They team up to rescue her from a sadistic killer known only as Yellow.

Sounds simple enough. I don't really care what its about to be honest. If it has Argento's name attached to it, I'm there!!

Top 100 horror movies of all time?? I'm not so sure about this list...

I have really been enjoying finding other horror blogs lately, there are some really great ones out there. One of the better ones I have found was the BASEMENT OF GHOULISH DECADENCE. Pretty cool name and a really cool site. The latest post is the blog authors list of this TOP 100 HORROR FILMS OF ALL TIME. Take a look at the list and let me know what you think. I personally would have put THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE at #1, but he puts it at #2, so close enough. I have to wonder about his placing of THE EVIL DEAD (#46) and THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (#85). Both of those films would be in my top 10 for sure!

Check out the BASEMENT OF GHOULISH DECADENCE's list of THE TOP 100 HORROR MOVIES OF ALL TIME HERE.

TEXAS FRIGHTMARE WEEKEND 2010 announces it's first 5 guests!!

With as much fun as I had at this years event, I knew I would be going back next year. And now there are 5 excellent reasons to make a return trip. TEXAS FRIGHTMARE WEEKEND has announced it's first 5 guests, and they are good ones!!

1. Betsy Palmer - Betsy is a screen legend who is best known for playing Jason Voorhees's

2. Sid Haig - a true horror legend, Sid has starred in such classic horror/exploitation films such
as SPIDER BABY, THE BIG DOLL HOUSE, THE BIG BIRD CAGE, and
BLACK MAMA-WHITE MAMA among countless other performances, but is best
known to us fans as Capt. Spaulding from HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES and
THE DEVILS REJECTS

3. Bill Moseley -- Bill has been in numerous horror films, but is best known to fans for his

Local horror movie being filmed right here in Northwest Arkansas!!!

I heard about this a couple of weeks ago, but failed to blog about it until now! Some local High School teens are filming a movie right here in Northwest Arkansas! The film is titled FATALITY, and is being described as a psychological thriller. Here is the official synopsis from the film's official website:

Carrie Hume (TANNER SEVERSON) is a young woman trying to be the opposite of what everyone else strives for: being different. Tormented by various stresses, Carrie periodically loses her memory- becoming helpless and vulnerable. With the help of a mysterious young hitchhiker, Jez Belle (JORDAN MARTIN) and her stubborn ex-boyfriend, Derek Collins (HUNTER STINE), Carrie is trusted into a world beyond her worst nightmares, remembering her past and quickly finding out that the people she learned to trust the most become the ones to eventually betray her.

An article in the newspaper mentioned that on one day of shooting, downtown Rogers was full of extras in Zombie makeup. Not sure how the zombies fit into this plot, guess we will just have to wait and see. I'm sure being a locally shot film, we will have plenty of chances to view the film at local showings. I will keep you updated if I get any more info!!

CD Review: CREATURE FEATURE: THE GREATEST SHOW UNEARTHED

I was thinking about what to review next for my blog, and realized I had never reviewed a CD. I have done horror movies, and books, of course, but never any music. I guess this is obviously because there just isn't as much "Horror" bands as there are movies. But, I do know of one band that definitely fits into the Horror genre. The bands name is CREATURE FEATURE and their debut album came out a few years ago and is titled: THE GREATEST SHOW UNEARTHED. Excellent title..great play on words. I found this group on Myspace and loved their songs and immediately bought their CD. Listening to the CD reminds me of old sideshows at the carnival, really creepy and unnerving. Most people would think that a Horror themed band would be heavy metal rock music. This is not that at all...these are fun, upbeat song, that just happen to be about topics such as zombies and being buried alive!! This is an excellent CD and I can't wait for their next one. Here is the list of songs on the CD, there are some great titles:

1. The Greatest Show Unearthed

2. Aim For The Head

3. Buried Alive

4. Bound And Gagged

5. A Gorey Demise

6. Look To The Skies

7. Six Foot Deep

8. The Meek Shall Inherit The Earth

9. A Corpse In My Bed

10. Such Horrible Things

Check out the official CREATURE FEATURE MySpace page HERE to learn more about the group and hear some of their songs

Also, click HERE to buy the album from BestBuy.com or you can buy the album on Itunes!
